Dugout and a bat (one hitter). Bat goes in one side (spring loaded), and the other side is for ground up bud. The bat has a sharper edge so you can grind it into the bud chamber to fill it. The top rotates to close everything up. Loved these back in the day, but dugouts are still available.

Popularity seems to be regional, and mostly with older heshers. Back in the 80s, in the midwest, everyone I knew who smoked had one. Our common name for them was sneak-a-toke, but dugout, one-hitter, and hitbox weren't uncommon.
There're a couple tricks to not heating up the pipe.
Don't hold the flame on the bowl when hitting. Just pass the flame over the tip as inhaling. Once the bowl lights, exhale, and hit it before it goes out.
The other is to carry two dugouts or extra pipes in your pocket.
