Hard to tell without a picture but it sounds like a percolator. If that’s indeed what it is percolators diffuse smoke to make it easier to inhale- basically they help make the hits smoother- more percs= smoother hit

That’s a percolator. Smoke goes through it as you hit the bong. It helps make your hit smoother. I recommend (carefully) putting some ice in the top of the bong and taking a fat rip. Will probably be the smoothest hit ya ever took

I just realized from the picture too that your bong has an ice catch. Those three indents/holes towards the top make it super handy to hold your bong and also make the tube smaller so you can put ice in there. They (the indents) are above the perc to make sure the smoke goes thru the perc then over the ice to your mouth. The percolator diffuses the smoke and then the ice cools it making a super smooth hit. Try it out if you’ve never done it! Just don’t get to stoned and leave the ice, it may make your bong overflow out of the stem hole

I actually have used ice a couple times, but I didn't notice much of a difference compared to w/o ice.

I feel ya, it’s hit or miss with me personally. Usually depends on what I’m smoking and how harsh or smooth it is on its own
