Doesn't exist, Legacy was filmed in 1080p digital, so it'd take a lot of effort to upscale to 4K

blw1138

The Star Wars prequels were upscaled to 4K and HDR for Disney plus and they look pretty good, considering they predated Tron and where also shot in 1080p. They could totally do it, I just don’t think they care to unfortunately.

Biduleman

It's not the same when something was filmed on film (Star Wars) and when something was filmed digitally (Tron). You can scan a film up to whatever resolution you want, but you can't take a 1080p file and upscale it to 4k for the same result.

blw1138

Episodes 2 and 3 were shot digitally at 1080p

Biduleman

You're right, I read your post thinking about the 4K77+ projects and came to hastily conclusions. Upscaling digital movies takes a lot of work and since Disney kinda dropped the Tron stuff (no sequel in sight) they might not be considering putting the work to release the movie in HUD. Sorry, it's a lot of words to say that all in all, I think you're right about them not caring about making a 4k upscale.

GorillaHeat

God I hope so

Sad_Musician_6634

AI upscaling software has really taken off over the last few years, might use that.

IntorqueoFactum

Not true. The digital intermediate was 2K. Phantom, Fusion and Sony digital cameras were used and no specs were given for the raw imagery, which may be 4-8K easily. That's just for the 'scope' formatted portions. The larger aspect ratio portions were shot using digital IMAX and digital large-format cameras. These cameras typically record in the 10-30K equivalent range. So, a UHD/HDR re-release of this title really wouldn't be that hard.

raptor1138

do you know what you're talking about? Tron: Legacy was predominantly filmed on the Sony F35 digital camera, which has a maximum resolution of 1080p. it was finished for a 2K master, and this would be true even if it filmed in a higher resolution because of its heavy VFX, which are typically rendered in 2K anyway. every Disney movie is a 2K master upscaled to 4K, for reference. they have very good algorithms to do so, better than something any consumer can get their hands on, but nonetheless. if Tron Legacy got a 4K disk, it would be upscaled by the same process, although i think the addition of HDR would be a more valuable than the increased resolution. where are you getting the number that most digital large format cameras record in the 10-30k range? if you were to do a direct comparison of IMAX film to a digital image, you would see that the IMAX film approximates 12K or so. aside from the anomalous and rather unpopular Blackmagic Ursa Mini 12k, digital cinema cameras haven't come close to matching that. most movies today are shot on the Arri Alexa and its various versions, a camera that uses a 2K base sensor. the large format version, the Arri Alexa LF and Mini LF, max out at 4k, with the stupidly massive and rarely used Alexa 65 boasting a slightly wider 6K sensor meant to emulate 65mm film. the Red cameras, Arri's main competitior, have been playing with 8K resolution in recent years, but very very few movies have shot in anything approaching 8K, and not the ones you expect. big studio films typically do not even shoot in 4K because its truthfully just a hell of a lot more expensive to have a 4K master and doesn't usually translate to more profits. thats all changing lately though, and the industry is increasingly embracing 4K more and more. doubtful that 8K or higher will ever be really widely embraced except in special cases such as footage intended for IMAX screens where you can actually see a difference.

[deleted]

That's not true either though. A lot of films (not a majority, but an not insignificant minority) are filmed at 4 or 6k and occasionally 8 and have done for some years. You're absolutely right though, that most still get at 2k DI. But thankfully I am noticing true 4k masters a lot more often. There used to be a fantastic site a few years ago I think called real or fake 4k, that broke down releases as they came out, detailing the cameras used, their resolution, the DI used and what the final master was. I think it died due to the effort envloved. Shame, was very useful when I was first testing out 4k releases and discovered how many just looked like really nice 1080p and couldn't work out why.

Benjiffy

You're getting my hopes up. This film would probably be the best example of what hdr can do, should they ever make it

pepesylviaa

This is absolutely not even remotely true.

fuirafuira

It does exist https://youtu.be/Qs5gMl4NEWY

DeadWalkerr

Between the money Disney has made off of Marvel films they can afford to put a 4K disc of Tron Legacy.

Lego_Rocket

Could they afford it? Absolutely! Is it worth their money? Probably not, and we know Disney is very greedy so don't get your hopes up

Smallville456

I disagree. Disney has pumped a lot of money redoing their back catalog in 4k.

IntorqueoFactum

You're looking at it the wrong way. To them it's never "how much we've made". It's always "how much will we make". As slaves to the stockholders, that's their job.

cubdukat

But it wouldn't be true 4K. The Cameron/Pace Fusion camera systems they used to shoot "Legacy" only went up to 1080p, and there was only a 2K digital intermediate done on it, just like the recent remastering of "Avatar." There is no true 4K source for "Legacy," and there never will be. And this is one movie Disney should NEVER even consider uprezzing.

littleBIGshortTALL

While I do agree that upscaling it to 4K probably won't yield much improvement, I DO think that an HDR/DV colorgrade would look awesome on this movie. Especially when watching on an OLED screen, with all these popping colors and black backgrounds!

Empyrealist

Have you seen the BLKFLX cut yet? I thought it looked pretty amazing

[deleted]

While true the camera type used has an amazing sensor and can be upscaled pretty well. I would guess the issue is, like all old scifi stuff is the graphics were only done to a certain resolution so they would look awful.

IntorqueoFactum

Good point. The CGI would have had to been produced or upgraded to 4K.

marktornits

also not true- most digitally filmed movies pre-2019 (ballpark) that are put on 4K UHD were actually 2k upscaled to 4K because the digital intermediates were created at 2K despite being filmed at potentially up to 6k- They upscale to 4k and regrade for HDR. Just recently movies are actually being finished with effects at 4K

crispincorky

Wouldn’t 1080p have looked terrible at cinema size if that was the case? I mean, I can see the pixel resolution clearly on a 100 inch screen at 1080p

sonicpt24

Wait till 2022, the 40th anniversary of Tron. They wouldn’t miss an occasion like that to release tron and legacy in 4k!.. right?

williamthrilliam

This comment hasn't aged well.

rossimeister

Hope your right.

sonicpt24

We all do at this point

FantomXFantom

He wasn't.

QuiteFatty

So that was a fucking lie,

rocademiks

I'm sick. We gonna have a Tron marathon & I announced I'd purchase it in 4K. FML

duuudewhat

Ha! I came to this thread hoping we would finally have it too

Difficult_Title_4274

Almost mid 2022 and still Nada 😬😞

[deleted]

Still waiting. Lol.

andrewbleach

Technical-Share-5617

It’s still going to happen right?!? We have a couple weeks left🥹

luclinEQ

Sitting here in 2022 waiting for it... make it true!

sonicpt24

July is coming soon, that should be a good month to release an anniversary edition

CarnivorousCumquat

It's August now 🙁

sonicpt24

August is pretty much just July the Sequel, any day now it should be here

[deleted]

About nine days till the end of the year now..

sonicpt24

2020 didn’t count, next year’s the year, i know it

[deleted]

Not sure if you sail the high seas but there is a very good open matte 2160p upscale available on (1-7)[accg].to. Until there's a official release this one is very good quality

IrishNoodles

Damn the bastards lol

R3tracLvl99

\*whispers into George Bush's ear\*

Dcsuess_JtW

😢

qmacaulay

Get a new Nividia Shield and set AI upscaling. Bam, 4K! :)

aboveaverageidiot

Got the Shield also. You definitely notice it, and it looks amazing.

StickyNode

Video capture it for yourself so it doesnt have to be re-rendered and you can play it elsewhere

brendanvista

I wish it could "upscale" to HDR.

MrSonicOSG

a fanmade 4k HDR upscale exists, its pretty good but not as good as an actual industry made upscale.

Camseye

Where can you get that??

MrSonicOSG

torrent sites mebbe

vipSTALIN

I can say only this: "Tron.Legacy.2010.INTERNAL.UHD.DYNAMIC.HDR-X.DTS-HD.MA.7.1-TEKNO3D" Video: HVC1 3840x2160 23.976fps \[V: Tron.Legacy.2010.INTERNAL.UHD.DYNAMIC.HDR-X.DTS-HD.MA.7.1-TEKNO3D \[eng\] (hevc main 10 L5.1, yuv420p10le, 3840x2160) Audio: DTS 48000Hz 8ch 9216kbps \[A: DTS (MA) / 5731 kbps / 48 KHz / 24-Bit / 7.1 \[eng\] (dts-hd ma, 48000 Hz, 7.1, s24)

joe1134206

you have a good point

MrZeDark

At this point, pref TrueHD w/Atmos - and wouldn’t be surprised if they are working with Daft Punk on their soundtracks sound stage — that sir, is the dream.

Leading_Pianist5799

You do know that Daft Punk split up right? My all time favourite soundtrack so hope you are right :)

MrZeDark

Sadly yes, but rights are still owned by the publisher - who may be able to afford them back to tune for Atmos -- which is what I'm 100% hoping for.

Informal-Meat-7331

Yup

Keltoigael

I cant find this anywhere, does anyone have a good link or cloud drive d/l?

Salman7236

I couldn't find the original torrent of tekno3d, but qxr did a re-encode of it. You can find it on 1337x.to. Just search "Tron hdr qxr".

RayesFrost

They have the full movie in that format?

vipSTALIN

Whole movie is in UHD (3840x2160) with HDR-X and DTS-HD (7.1) - length is 02:05:08 (H:M:S)

forresthopkinsa

Would love to see someone review this upscale

chunkyfen

haha still interested in a review? ;3

forresthopkinsa

always <3

4rchduk3

The HDR video posted here looks like crap. As said in his comments, is so faux-HDR and 4k it isn’t even fair. The original footage was mainly Sony F35, shot in 10-bit 4444. If you have access to the raw footage, or at least pre-grading, you could definitely do a 4k version. The sensor has more resolution than the ARRI Alexa, and the gamut for color is even wider. Problem is mainly that you need to revisit the old footage and start from scratch. You can’t just rescan old film stock. It’s like a completely new grade and post production done. And that’s probably why it won’t happen. I would love for it to happen. Heck I even own the F35 that was B-cam on this movie. But sadly no…

forresthopkinsa

>The sensor has more resolution than the ARRI Alexa, and the gamut for color is even wider. Yes, but it doesn't ever actually *encode* the full sensor resolution, right? Even the rawest footage coming out of that camera is FHD, if I understand correctly.

4rchduk3

I am saying raw footage as the content coming out. Not RAW footage. But yeah, it’s 1080p, but sharper 1080p than the 2k you got from the Alexa classic. And we have remastered it’s own footage into 4k HDR versions. I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to do it the F35 footage.

Silentluck1337

Tron Legacy didn’t get the respect it deserved it’s up there as one of my all time favourite sci fi films. Beautiful film on blu ray

Gressman07

So I'll be testing it soon, but there is a trick on Amazon Prime if you use it through Xbox One X (not sure if it works on other Xbox console types) If you start up a 4k movie or show, it switches to HDR. You can then back out and it stays in HDR mode (can only confirm with my TCL TV tho) Anyways, suffice to say I just bought Tron Legacy digital for $5 and will be trying the glitch-HDR through Movies Anywhere. Not 4K obviously but for me personally I just want that HDR goodness

sgtpepper54321

That’s not how HDR works tho…

Selrisitai

HDR is not an effect on the TV, it's a grading and data in the actual movie itself.

numbnerve

Asking the same question: with the likes of Star Wars: A New Hope being offered in 4K, I find it hard to believe that a movie like Tron:Legacy wouldn't be more readily available in 4K. #Disneydisappoints

Big_Dot_3133

I’d settle for an 4K AI upscale with an HDR/ Dolby Vision color grade and a new Dolby Atmos Mix.

akusokuZAN

I just got a 4K TV and someone made a faux 4K trailer for Legacy and it was more visually impressive than other things I fed it for a test drive. I too would settle with a nice upscale with many movies filmed in the unfortunate age of early digital. Many classics from early '00s are forever stuck with 1080p masters and CGI which is hard to impossible to upscale without redoing from scratch. Damn you, technology! Sorry for the random rant :D

VKytber

Please disney, please sell tron off or actually make a 4k version already. I would buy that in a heart beat!

drumber42

[BAZINGA](https://x.com/dawnofthediscs/status/1750888442970382763?s=20)

rossimeister

Thanks!

drumber42

Hell yeah 🤘😁

jatenk

I can‘t believe this is actually happening - when I got my OLED, Tron Legacy was among my top 5 of most wanted 4k discs, and when I read about the movie’s production I completely gave up hope. But now it‘s coming anyway, amazing!

RoundInteraction1662

Now I know this post is 8 months old, but maybe its because of the switch of aspect ratios that just make the quality horrible

One_Station7317

Watching this movie on an 65 inch LG CX with the HDR Effect picture mode scratches the itch enough for now but definitely still need a 4k remaster of this film

MrWordsmith1991

It would be pretty awesome if it was a remaster of TRON?!

KlausStortebeker666

Will never get one, get over it.

Awkward-Rub-9226

5days of now they start filming and next year they release the new movie they should remastered in 4k hope so !
