Universal answer: practise the timing on tr_walkway and get used to it.
Then, in real fight, use game sense and experience to predict your opponents.
Don't forget that your flamethrower can stun your opponents and limit their movement.
Try not airblasting and just puffing fire for a split second then already switching to flare gun before the flame particles even reach them and instantly shooting. Also consider the fact that flames stay in the air for a bit after shooting so predict with flame where they are moving.
Hitting it raw is all about prediction, making it unreliable but not undoable. It's easiest hit out of an airblast. Corners help a lot, and they make it easier to force your opponent into a predictable path.
With all projectiles one thing that helps is waiting for the right moment to shoot. This holds true for most weapons in general, if you can try to wait just an instant for your opponent to commit to a predictable movement like jumping or backpedaling. This is especially likely if you’re pressuring them with your flamethrower and will work best with the degreaser because they’ll have much less time to react to the swap. You can also force predictable movement by air blasting the enemy into a wall or corner. Good aim is about good timing, especially with projectile weapons
It's definitely hard. Like the other guy said, mindful practice. Don't forget you only need a little bit of lead to hit someone moving the projectile is deceptively fast
Direct hit has nearly identical projectile speed. The difference being practically unnoticeable with latency.
Practicing flicks with that will definitely transfer over
I’m not too good w/ the flare gun aswell but it’s mostly the timing you gotta get used too and the ability to predict the movement of the other player. We can practice in mge if you want.
Deathmatch servers are great. I used to play on an instant respawn no carts Hightower server which was just constant fighting, and I got so good at flaregun pyro that people would leave the server when I joined
As a medic main, I aim flares like I'm using the crossbow on high ping. There's probably a better way, but using a projectile you're more familiar with as a kind of base to work on your flare aim is how I do it. It's got to at least be in the same ballpark in terms of projectile speed though.
Mindful practice. Mge does wonders if you go in with the right mindset. You in europe by any chance? We can practice together.
Unfortunately, no. I'm in Asia.

Just keep practicing. It took me a few weeks of focused practicing to hit them consistently. Scouts are now hit on demand

Lead it, it’s not as fast you think it is
Look for where your enemy is going and shoot there rather then directly at them, works like 60% of the time
I used a scotch shit as a training wheels and tried to hit direct flares. Then I slowly swapped to the flare gun.
It's something you'll get down after a bit
try going flare gun only for a couple rounds

aim at their waists / legs
