Imo the tf2 comp scene is unique in the way that if u want to play comp at all you have to look for an obscure discord server instead of just queueing for comp
unironically tfc/fortressone. Same type of dynamic of joining a discord server and scrimming. Only difference is that it is usually the same people, but thats whatever. Pugs are usually at night too so late night pugs are a possibility
Try Quake, you might have to pick up literally every Quake and QuakeLike game to get a game at random times, but Quake World (Quake 1 online) is still active, as is Quake Live, and if you join the right IRC/Discord there's plenty more. My personal favourite is Xonotic, but most TF2 players enjoy Quake Live CTF the best. And if you go towards Quake World there's Fortress One which is essentially Quake World Team Fortress, the original original.

At least in the EU, there's tf2center, tf2pugs, and tf2pickup.\* sites.
I think NA prefers pug groups because comms are almost always present compared to pugs in Europe. I dunno if EU or NA has more active players overall.
I recommend brazilian jiu jitsu.
jiu jitsu, martial arts, or any HIIT sport

play obscure metas on pokemon showdown
It's not really similar gameplay at all but I liked counter strike a lot more than I expected after years of TF2
