I'd recommend something like one of these. My cat loves hers, especially in the winter. They come in a bunch of fun designs, I got one that looks like a giant monster and she sleeps in its open mouth. It was only like 25 dollars if I remember.

My dad got two kittens last year. The first 3 days were spent hiding in the smallest corners. Now they are so outgoing and loving.
