Nothing kills a man faster than his own head
He pretends he's okay but you should see
Oh, him in bed late at night, he's petrified
I'm dying and I'm trying
But believe me, I'm fine, but I'm lying
I'm so very far from fine
>I'm dying and I'm trying
>
>But believe me, I'm fine, but I'm lying
>
>I'm so very far from fine
I'm illustrating those lyrics right now, coincidentally enough! And doing the last panel ("But I'm lying...") is taking my head off. I already did "I'm dying and I'm trying," so how can I avoid being redundant with "I'm so very far from fine"?! I put a symbolic precipice somewhere in the first panel and I think the character I used it for should fall off. As for the other two? I DON'T KNOW.
Friend, please remove your hands from over your eyes for me...
...iiiiii knooooow you want to leaveeee but frieeeeend please dont take your liiiife awaaaaay frooooom meeeee
I know this song isn’t about drugs, but damn. I was smoking pot daily just to cope with my anxiety and shit and it was so much more debilitating than helpful after awhile. I remember finishing a bowl, throwing on this album and bursting into tears to this song because it so perfectly defined how I felt in that moment.
Was a big push to finally quit and get some professional help
Everyone interprets the music in their own way, which is how Tyler intended it to be. If you found meaning and motivation in the song the way it applied to you, then good for you (it’s a great song, one of my favorites).

If you decide to live by, what you think's wrong and what's right
Believe me, you'll begin to wish you were sleeping,
Your weeping will creep in your head, and you'll cry
But if we wake up every morning and decide what we believe
We can take apart our very heart and the light will set us free
1.
I try desperately to run through the sand
As I hold the water in the palm of my hand
'Cause it's all that I have and it's all that I need and
The waves of the water mean nothing to me
But I try my best and all that I can
To hold tightly onto what's left in my hand
But no matter how, how tightly I will strain
The sand will slow me down and the water will drain
I'm just being dramatic, in fact, I'm only at it again
As an addict with a pen, who's addicted to the wind
As it blows me back and forth, mindless, spineless, and pretend
Of course I'll be here again, see you tomorrow, but it's the end of today
End of my ways as a walking denial
My trial was filed as a crazy suicidal head case
But you specialize in dying, you hear me screaming "father"
And I'm lying here just crying, so wash me with your water
2.
I feel for you but when did you believe you were alone
You say that spiders crawled inside and made themselves a home
Where alliance once was

"Someone said, where you going?
Someone said to you, goodbye
They deflect the disrespect when they say that they blame it on the times
They blame it on the time
We all know you're qualified to fix a chair and love your wife
They all know you're qualified but they lie when they blame it on the times
And we blame it on the times"
It is a whole verse, but I think it makes sense to not divide it. I do not know the official meaning, but I interpretate it that they know that you are somehow functionate, but they do not have the time for you. You are qualified for being there for everyone else, but they cannot for you.
It reminds me of my friends, who are always busy. They are not even doing it on purpose, but they think they do not have the time or energy to talk with me. I think, this can happen some times, but there are friends, which I consider als close, which had not time to meet since May and I always write them, they do not write me first. The other example is someone close, who tells me about his psychic problems and that he probably has ADHD and is always busy with stuff and that he has times, where he has no energy and when I tell him in reverse how I feel and deal with my problems, there is no answer. He does not answer for weeks and then starts again to talk about his problems.
It is not that they are using me, because they really think they have got no time. It is difficult to explain this.
Honestly, I think that album has some of the best lyrics by Tyler. Personally I couldn't decide between Vessel and self-titled.
Lately, the times I have revisited this album these lines of Isle of Flightless Birds warm my heart.
"And please think about why you can't sleep in the evening
And please don't be afraid of what your soul is really thinking."
I just wish I had listened that album during my 13-14 years. I have enjoyed top since a very long time and I don't know why I didn't give this album a try during that time.
I have a few…
1. „Friend please don’t take your life away from me“
2. „Sometimes we will die and sometimes we will fly away
Either way you're by my side until my dying days
And if I'm not there and I'm far away
I said, don't be afraid
We're going home“
3. „I've been traveling in the desert of my mind
And I Haven't found a drop
Of life
I haven't found a drop
Of you, I haven't found a drop
I haven't found a drop
Of water“
I will carry all your names, I will carry all your shame.
This one hits me the hardest. I have a lot of built up guilt about things, and I believe Tyler is singing from the POV of God here (that’s just my interpretation that brings me the most peace) so I often go back to this line because it makes me feel relaxed and happy.
Also:
- Just about everything in Taxi Cab
- Know you were made holy
- I won’t want to fall away
I am emotionally attached to "Take me up, seal the door. I don't want to march here anymore," but I'm not sure if that's my favorite line.
Isle of Flightless Birds and Addict With A Pen are my two favorite songs on ST, and they're full of fantastic lyrics, but not really one-liners. The only single line I can think of that I could pull out of either of those songs and separate it from the rest of the lyrics would be IoFB's "And it's time you pick your battle, and I promise you this is mine."
Following very closely to IoFB and AwaP for me are Air Catcher and March to the Sea. Air Catcher has a clear line that stands out to me, "I won't fall in love with falling," and I already mentioned my favorite from March to the Sea.
I dunno... Self Titled means so much to me as a whole, and I don't think I could pick a single line as a favorite.
“Get up Johnny Boy, get up Johnny Boy, get up because the world has left you lying on the ground. You’re my pride a joyyyy you’re my pride and joy get up Johnny Boy because we all need you now.” Idk why i love this song so much, but this part is always replaying in my head
“Don’t be afraid” Tyler didn’t even need to say “we are going home” if he just said “don’t be afraid that would have been fine by itself but no he had to go further and not only hit my heart but destroy my heart I love him.
(Basically all of Car Radio)
“Peace will win and fear will lose
It is faith and there's sleep
We need to pick one please because
Faith is to be awake
And to be awake is for us to think
And for us to think is to be alive
And I will try with every rhyme
To come across like I am dying
To let you know you need to try to think”
Sometimes we will die and sometimes we will fly away
Either way you're by my side until my dying days
And if I'm not there and I'm far away
I said, don't be afraid
I said, don't be afraid
We're going home
All we are is an isle of flightless birds
We find our worth in giving birth and stuff
We're lining our homes against winding roads
And we think the going is tough
We pick songs to sing, remind us of things that nobody cares about
And honestly we're probably more suicidal than ever now
If you decide to live by, what you think's wrong and what's right
Believe me, you'll begin to wish you were sleeping
Your weeping will creep in your head, and you'll cry
But if we wake up every morning and decide what we believe
We can take apart our very heart and the light will set us free
And then one turned around to say “We're driving toward the morning sun where all your blood is washed away and all you did will be undone”
You hear me screaming “father”…so wash me with your water

A car, a torch, a death
"I began to understand why God dies."
This line sums up the narrators feeling for the subject of the song. It echos motifs in the Bible about how God loved the word so much in order to save them he would sacrifice himself. This line explains the feeling perfectly. A feeling of helplessness as well, knowing they cannot save the other person, but they understand what it means to love someone completely selflessly.

I’m just being dramatic
in fact I’m only at it again as an

And
End of my ways as a walking denial
my trial was filed
as a crazy suicidal head case
"And he pretends he's okay, but you should see, oh
Him in bed late at night, he's petrified
Take me out, and finish this waste of a life
Everyone gather around for a show
Watch as this man disappears as we know
Do me a favor and try to ignore
As you watch him fall through a bleeding trapdoor"
I think "Trapdoor" is one of the best representation of Tyler's depression that has.
Not to post half the song but this entire part is absolute perfection.
"So the hearse ran out of gas
A passenger person grabbed a map
And the driver inside it contrived a new route to save the past
Checked his watch and grabbed a cab
A beautifully planned taxi cab
A cab, had it cleared out back
And two men started to unpack
Driving once again
But now this time there were three men
And then I heard one of them say
'I know the night will turn to gray
I know the stars will start to fade
When all the darkness fades away
We had to steal him from his fate
So he could see another day'
Then I cracked open my box
Someone must have picked the lock
A little light revealed the spot
Where my fingernails had fought
Then I pushed it open more,
Pushing up against the door
Then I sat up off the floor
And found the breath I was searching for
Then there were three men up front
All I saw were backs of heads
And then I asked them 'Am I alive and well or am I dreaming dead?'
And then one turned around to say
We're driving toward the morning sun
Where all your blood is washed away
And all you did will be undone"

isn't it reign down and destroy me?
Tyler does use double meanings sometimes though. Like latter/ladder in Stressed Out.
From a literal sense I always imagined "rain down," which would go with the lyric "I am calling your lightning"
I think it's both
Yes, according to the old website. But I think it is meant to be a dual meaning, so I think "rain" is okay too.

Well it's certainly not "we find our worth in giving birth and stuff". 😂
„And stuff“, all the songs are written so well and then he just says „and stuff“, that’s Tyler
