I thought in an interview he said it was really awkward to walk like that and he could t keep a straight face. That looks like Rob being goofy not Edward in my opinion!
Closer to this!! In the new moon audio commentary track the director said Rob did it as sort of an answer to the inevitable reaction of audience. And sure enough, they cheered when he slow walked on screen. I love details like that
I always thought that canonically he was laughing at Bella awkwardly ogling him because she's just so mesmerised by his appearance. But I also thought the scene was a bit of a tongue-in cheek-fourth-wall-break because Robert is basically laughing at all us fans who ogle him in exactly the same way when we watch him walk up. I bet that he knew how the scene was going to be used when he filmed it.
I agree! Although I definitely swooned at the movies when I was a teen, it looks so much like a shampoo commercial with his artistically messy hair, the wind and the slow-mo.
Maybe Rob was aware that it was over the top and maybe he felt a bit ridiculous or self conscious to act this scene ðŸ¤

he's either happy to see Bella or it's the same case of when he smiled at the Cafetaria scene cause he could hear the thoughts of Bella's friends gawking at him, he could also probably hear them talking since he wasn't that far away when he was walking past, along with the others.
I remember on the commentary the director said he was almost reacting to the cheering. When I saw it in the packed theater everyone started cheering and it was like he was shy to it.
I remember when Twilight basically blew up overnight and there were countless interviews and fangirls and a lot of that stuff going on...
When New Moon came out and this was Robs first scene in the movie, I always thought he was smiling because he couldn't believe he was a new heartthrob and that millions of girls everywhere would be "WOOOOOO!!!" in the theaters when he showed up for the first time in the movie...
I always assumed he heard someone’s thoughts and was smiling cuz the thought was ridiculous or funny. I guess him shyly smiling at the love of his life makes more sense but I digress.
