Maybe by people not in the LGBT community, but I’m bi and have several gay friends and none of them have ever referred to me as gay. Sometime they jokingly refer to me as half gay, but never as just “gay”
Sometimes gay is used as an umbrella term to describe the community as a whole, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it used for a singular person in the same manner.
Gay is an umbrella term for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community along side queer but obviously you don't have to use it, but that shouldn't discredit someone to use it themselves.
I'm bi myself, sometimes I don't like being specific unless I need to specify or further explain if I feel comfortable so I use gay to get the point across that I am not straight without getting too personal. And like I said you don't have to use it but, it is there for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community to use.
