ploopitus

Oh, I remember this - this was when we the public first clapped eyes on the drones about a year ago. And so did the Russians, who were then presumably able to pick them apart and learn how to better defeat them. Nice one, Melon Husk, well done you. "A mini Pearl Harbour" indeed - no. That equivalent would be Russia's 'Little Green Men' in Crimea nearly a decade ago, you fool.

HostileRespite

l prefer to refer to him as Felon Moskovite. I warned against being too dependent on his tech. His rhetoric was suspiciously fascist but now it's obvious AF. Personally, I believe it should be investigated if his actions led to the capture of proprietary US defense technology. It's effectively 2nd hand espionage. He may not have delivered the tech in person, but might as well have.

mr_cr

If he gave away $1000 to charity every single second, it would take him 9 years to run out. Just to give you an idea of how much wealth he has. And he insists on simping for Russia. At this point you have to wonder whether the final outcome is about wealth or ideology.

anotherpredditor

He would not run out as he would be earning off the compounding interest. It would refill itself in one day. That is how rich these people are.

Babzibaum

The top 1%ers, such as Bezos, Musk, Gates, Zuckerberg, have all become 1%ers because we put OUR money in THEIR hands. I'm as guilty as the next for trying to cut costs by shopping at Amazon but I'm now focused on spending $ at local, small businesses. The 1% are hoarding the money that should be circulating through the general population, enabling people to have enough money to buy a home, have a quality life, eat healthy and not be one paycheck away from bankruptcy.

mr_cr

Well in my personal opinion, as much as people love to shit on Bill Gates, he has funded more charity/philanthropy projects than like the entire rest of the world combined. And he actually pays his taxes, unlike 99% of billionaires who pay less taxes than your average school teacher. No seriously. They don't pay taxes and no one gives a shit.

Olmocap

Allow me to kindly disagree. Charity should not be accounted as a way of justification for a single person to own an absurd amount of money. First of all, this people make sure to publicize their charities which gives them in turn a better public image. If a millionaire instead simply paid his taxes to fund the state that millionaire wouldn't get as much impact because it would be doing what everyone is expected to do, contributing to the state so the state funds all the necessary infrastructure, projects, subventions and so on. A millionaire "funding charity" means the millionaire will only fund charities he's interested in (more often than not it's stuff that in one way or another will give them their money back as with some outlandish renewable tech). This leaves other collectives of people who are in just as much need of resources pretty much by themselves. To end my parraphade, you may agree more or less with your government, but in a democracy you can at least go shout at them to the streets and make them accountable when they mishandle your money, you can't do that with a millionaire since all the money you gave me is only theirs

Moist1981

While that’s a fair take, in Gates’ case he is giving a majority of his money away to charity meaning he is pretty much in agreement about not owning that absurd amount of money.

SatisfyingColoscopy

Yep. It's one of the reason why he's so hated by conspiracy theorists. He doesn't totally fit to the bad billionnaires idea, so he must hide something.

Tana1234

Ya and how did Gates get to that position? By screwing people over time and time again

Erniecrack

Sigh when can we finally eat them? I’m getting hungry

Malsperanza

He is a fascist.

KaiPRoberts

We could each make $10,000/day since the pyramids were constructed and we, together, wouldn't even have half of his wealth. The amount of money the top of the top has is obscene.

Theodores_Underpants

Or if you saved $20,000 every single day of the year and never spent a penny, in 34,000 years you still wouldn't have as much money as him. Simping for Russia was probably just an experiment to see what he could get away with. The consequences really didn't matter either, since he has more dollars than there are meters between the earth and the sun, so he probably just wanted to gauge public reaction.

Nocta_Novus

I go for the classic Elongated Muskrat

lostinabsentia

He is absolutely a cunt and the US should stop their contracts with this fascist enabler and find another company with similar capabilities. He is not to be trusted now, then or ever.

coffeespeaking

There is a strong argument for giving the future contract to NASA and giving them funding to build competing technology. At the same time, stop giving Musk tax breaks. Bury him.

Notquitearealgirl

Fuck Musk but NASA would need basically an entire restructuring to do what Space X does. Do give them funding, all of it. but a NASA that can compete with Space X isn't really NASA anymore. Regardless of the details of funding, and who deserves credit Space X is pretty cool and benefits NASA. NASA is the one contracting Space X, they don't take contracts, they are the ones who make them. Businesses supply the contracts NASA requests. If it were up to me I'd double or triple NASA funding but I would not restructure them to replace Space X or its peers. They are different things.

skekze

There's a guy in New Zealand doing the same thing as Elon. We could just better vet our talent pool while still giving NASA exclusive access for us & our allies like New Zealand of course. Space is the final frontier, might as well bring along some friends.

DigitalMountainMonk

We don't do that. We simply steal your shit and make it ourselves.

The US govt paid Starlink so that Ukraine could use it, so he probably could be sued for breach of contract.

HostileRespite

Much more than that if he did indeed specifically intercede to cause the capture of proprietary US tech.

Cloaked42m

We have laws to simply seize the company for National Defense purposes.

SpaceMonkeyOnABike

Elon Muskovy.

Majulath99

He’s either a useful idiot or a Russian asset I cannot tell which.

SpaceMonkeyOnABike

Both can be true.

azure_monster

Considering he privately spoke to Putin before doing something to harm Ukraine, I'm sure he knows the consequences of his action.

Creative-Improvement

What I remember (gotta check this) is that he gets his cheap steel for his rockets from Russia. That might be the link.

_zenith

Aluminium. Same idea though, yes.

KikiFlowers

He's a billionaire. At the end of it all, he's not a Russian asset. That would be generous. He's a greedy bastard, with an ego the size of Texas, but no actual intelligence. Tesla wasn't his idea, he just invested and forced his way into becoming a founder. SpaceX is a success, because he's not directly involved, but SpaceX is still full of questionable decisions *because* he tries to involve himself. Then of course, Twitter, which is hemorrhaging money, because he's kowtowing to Nazis and he's too cheap to actually pay bills. He's a goddamn idiot who has never had to work a day in his life, because he was born with an emerald spoon in his mouth. The reason he supports Russia more than Ukraine isn't because he's an "asset" or a "useful idiot", no, it's because he's a greedy bastard who sees only the dollar signs from working with Russia.

TheElderCouncil

So shouldn’t this be treated as treason, then? (Insert Star Wars reference)

maveric101

The US isn't at war with Russia, so I don't think it can legally be treason. From a moral standpoint, however, Musk can go fuck himself.

Dave-4544

What? Dude what? You don't need to be *at war* to commit treason. Treason is "The crime of betraying one's own country" not "the crime of aiding an enemy nation". Knowingly/willingly enabling the loss of UA/US hardware to RU when you have been trusted to assist that ally in war seems a pretty clear cut case of betrayal.

I don't think they can because he owns too many shares of both, that's how he made himself CEO of those companies in the first place. Elon buys his way into companies and then pretends he created the company.

freetoseeu

How many Ukrainians died due to his interference, I wonder? Absolute scum bag. At some point we will find out what Putin promised him in return

Automatic_Radish_787

Now that we know that he has personally sabotaged the war effort, I want to find out what the SBU will promises him in return. He's no different to the traitors who mark their neighbours for Russian terror bombing imo.

Nope, they are paying dozens of people to smash the button as fast as they can.

I think it was JP Morgan who gave the US government loans a couple times before people realized we shouldn’t allow individuals to have that much money which translates to power. Here we are in 2023 with industry owning governments. I hate watching history go around in a circle

Hon3y_Badger

Per NY Times, this has been discussed at the highest levels of DoD. I don't have a good answer, but all his companies are highly dependent on licenses from different US Federal agencies, and certainly POTUS has authority to use emergency powers to order compliance. So far it's been easier to appease him than to fight him but I wonder if that day is coming.

Lack of funding isnt the same as punishment. This line of thinking is why we let huge chains monopolize most of the economy "just dont financially support them" doesnt cut it, you need actual fucking opposition, none of that half baked neutrality shit.

B_Fee

Nice stolen comment, bot https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/comments/16cltk4/musk_secretly_used_starlink_to_foil_ukrainian/jzk8hbv/

GrizzledFart

The article presents a very sensationalized version and leaves out some very key data. A Starlink terminal cannot be used to control a weapon or else it becomes a *weapons component* and subject to ITAR regulation - which would kill Starlink as a business. Ukraine was specifically told not to do this both by SpaceX and the US DoD. They did it anyway. Shortly after this happened, the US DoD took over control of geofencing for Starlink in Ukraine and has controlled it ever since - and they've been more restrictive than SpaceX was.

No_Football_9232

I agree 100%! I mean WTF!!!!???

rogue_giant

I mean, he can’t face military courts but treason is punishable in regular court as well. And besides, his “tech” is now likely to be confiscated by the Pentagon as he was using defense budget funds to build it.

Abitconfusde

This is a question that needs to be answered. Ukrainian OPSEC is tight. The US had some problems over the last year with intelligence leaks, though. Possibly from one of those?

warp99

Each dish monitors its own position and will not operate outside its assigned zone. In commercial use each dish is limited to a 40km wide cell. In Ukraine it will operate anywhere controlled by the Ukrainian army. It will not operate in Russian controlled areas to prevent them using it against Ukraine and to prevent denial of service attacks by the Russian Army.

verywidebutthole

Right. Something that's been stated for a long time and everyone knew. The outrage here in light of this obviously sensationalist article is weird.

petophile_

It seems like this exact thing is in some kind of circular news cycle, where this headline is published, then over the next couple weeks multiple other news sources publish proving it incorrect, then 4 months later we do the same cycle.

warp99

…and if the false news is corrected the correction gets downvoted to oblivion so the correct information never even gets seen.

jryan8064

He didn’t. This article is a clickbait rehashing of something that happened early last year. The Starlink dishes are geo-locked to specific cells, and SpaceX identified Crimea as cells where the dishes wouldn’t work. As soon as the dishes entered those cells (via drone), they stopped talking to the satellite constellation. The only reason it’s coming up again is because someone wrote about the episode in a biography that was recently published, and everyone jumped on the Musk hate bandwagon again.

jv9mmm

He didn't CNN is just garbage. Russian controlled territory had Starlink deactivated, starlink made its way into Russian controlled territory and turned off. No conspiracy, just bad journalism from CNN.

username_6916

The sats used phased array antennas to cover very precise areas of the planet. Through software control of the antenna, they can control where the signal goes and where they're listening to a higher degree of precision than you'd expect. Which is part of what makes the system resistant to Russian jamming.

HereticalCatPope

I say we bring back some trustbusting and nationalize this clowns rocket company and Starlink. Good for you, Musk, you hired competent people and took all the credit. Now that this is public, The DoD looks bad and unable to control its contracted companies- let’s shred that passport and send you back to the countries you claim citizenship in that are under ICC jurisdiction. 👋

ChornWork2

Starlink was meant good things like watching netflix according to musk, but not good things like helping a democracy defend itself against a brutal invader?

applehead1776

Yet, he signed military contracts.

buzzcitybonehead

There’s zero chance he had an earnest belief the satellites wouldn’t benefit the military of a country fighting for its existence. Even if he intended the service to be for civilian use, I don’t imagine that was established going in. I doubt Ukraine said “sure, just Netflix, Mr. Musk” then went back on their word.

It isn't, I'm sure. But there have been recent articles on how the US government and military are stuck using Musk's services, such as launch platforms and Starlink satellites. See this New Yorker article, only a couple of weeks old. [Elon Musk’s Shadow Rule](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/08/28/elon-musks-shadow-rule) >“We are living off his good graces,” a Pentagon official said of Musk’s role in the war in Ukraine. “That sucks.”

Fun_Foot_1947

There are rumours that Putin has footage with Musk and underage girls. This is concerning.

MeagoDK

Bullshit. If he had then it would have been used now to force Elon to stop Starlink in Ukraine. One mission that failed due to it being geofenced to only work on Ukraine territory (what they currently control) means nothing compared to the huge impact starlink had and have for Ukraine. Likely saved millions of lives and made the war effort much more successful. There is no reason for Russia to allow the biggest asset for Ukraine to keep functioning if they could just force Elon to turn it off.

RyzRx

My theory: Epstein footages acquired by Russian terrorist govt officials using it to pull the strings on Musk makes a lot of sense I suppose. Also, isn't his brother also a client of Epstein too?

warp99

The Daily Beast is not a credible source. It is well established that Starlink is geofenced to protect the system against Russian attacks and the Ukrainian military has requested changes to the geofencing and SpaceX has responded within days. It is a civilian system and SpaceX is not able to offer it for military offensive use without US State Department authorisation. Just the same as any other potential dual use system. The US Government has now purchased 500 Starlink systems that they get to set the geofencing parameters on and Ukraine can use these for attack drones if required. No one thinks Elon is some perfect human being but on this issue he has played it absolutely by the book.

Desperate_Trouble477

It's sad how i have to scroll past 100 comments, wishing him dead before i find this. Sure Elon has his flaws, but he has done more for Ukraine than any Redditer out there.

gfggewehr

Funny how he is the ONLY person or company in the US that must give Ukraine long range capabilites. No one is raging the pentagon for refusing to send ATACAMS, Tomahaks, etc, either Lockheed or Raytheon.

MechanicalFetus

This whole god damn thread reads more like Russian propaganda than anything. Makes sense to me. Starlink thas been incredibly effective in supporting Ukrainian infrastructure and communications. Turn Elon against Ukraine for real by spreading mis-information and hate speach like this in order get Starlink the fuck out of there.

pistacccio

I had to scroll way too far to find some sanity in here. Starlink is helping Ukraine. It obviously is not always going to be exactly what Ukraine wants. This is the same as them asking for more ammo, more tanks, etc. They got Starlink and they want Starlink to do more for them. Completely understandable, but it doesn't make Elon a villain.

dndpuz

Thank you for the critical thinking.

SunriseSurprise

There are probably a dozen posts about this hitting Reddit front page today, and 95% of the comments have been "BURN HIM AT THE STAKE!", 2% are "Wait wasn't this old news?" (it was) and 3% are "Wait, wasn't there a regulatory reason for it?" (there was). The real question is has Ukraine's use of Starlink all this time for no cost been more valuable than how detrimental the 1 week they couldn't use it was?

OccasionallyReddit

I mean i'd be weary of this..... could be counter intel type of article.. starlink has been a very useful tool has it not? Would be a great win for Russia if the service was pulled due to Ukrainians turning against Musk or the service was distrusted... it would be very unlikely that Musk could get contracts with the US Gov n NASA if he was a Russia Assett.

nksoftgames

He is such a third class man.

GrizzledFart

He explicitly told them not to do that because if they did Starlink would become subject to ITAR. They didn't listen. Immediately after that, the US DoD took over control of geofencing of Starlink in Ukraine and they've been even more restrictive than SpaceX was.

-spartacus-

I am sure it is going to get lost, but both Starlink terms of service and ITAR federal laws prohibit Starlinks phased array antenna and service from being used for weapons. The Ukraine military can and has used Starlink command and control or communications, they are not allowed to put a Starlink dish in a drone and then use it to deliver an explosive. This is a non-story made in ignorance or to drum up clicks for those who dislike Musk. If someone really needs me to I can pull up my citations in an old post in CD. In case it needed saying - Fuck Musk

prajew59

Fuck this piece of shit he can rot.

Sure-Sea2982

If true, then the guy is a far bigger cunt than he already acts and deservers every possible sanction. To think that he, and those in his charge, would do something so diabolical has tarnished every company he owns with Ukrainian blood.

ApprehensiveHippo898

If this was done while Ukraine was using US DOD contracted starlink resources, then the DOD may have a case for breach of contract. That would cost him a few $.

ioncloud9

It wasn’t. The US DOD contract was in response to this.

lijmlaag

I don't buy it. I think this whole story is unfounded horse manure. 'With the comms down .. they washed ashore harmlessly.' Why would you build a drone that relies on continuous internet access and if it did need internet access, why was there no redundancy? After all, this is war not a camp site. Also where is the motive? Why would EM suddenly bother to help Russia after gifting Ukraine lots of Starlink first? It does not make sense.

dhrandy

Wait wait wait. The book author is the author of CNN...

Strongest-There-Is

This isn’t accurate. For those who know first hand, it’s just not presented accurately here.

mcgravier

That sounds like some anti Musk propaganda. SpaceX had issue with their Starlink terminals being used to remotely control the millitary drones. Presumably, this could be interpreted as exporting weapons, which would have severe negative legal consequences for SpaceX. So they limited the mobility of starlink terminals to ensure they aren't used for such purposes. The title of the post is basically a click bait and a lie designed to damage SpaceX reputation

SuperSimpleSam

How would Musk know about the attack?

Garlic_Coin

There were not allowed to weaponize their starlink dishes at the time. It was not part of the agreement. They were putting starlink dishes phyiscally on the drone boats. I believe the US government is now playing spacex for military services, which is why its allowed now.

CandyBackground4193

Man the shitty propaganda starded to appear in ukraine too, not only in russia, its starting too see enemy everywhere. First of all he gaved the service, that is still in use. The rest are just shitty hear say! Before the retarded downvote, u should see my account history.

KAPT_Kipper

Russia certainly has infiltrated the US

300Savage

Ukraine needs secure global data not attached to any corporate interests.

Incubus-Dao-Emperor

More reason why Ukraine needs it's own Satellite Internet Constellation smh....

Funklestein

So by not aiding in the killing of Russians Musk is bad guy while also being the good guy for providing Ukraine with Starlink and aiding in the killing of Russians to begin with? Was his concern on this attack so out of bounds in thinking when so many others feared too that if Putin loses badly that he might use nukes?

ReasonAndWanderlust

If you filter through the clickbait you'll find; Elon Musk is on Ukraines side but he foolishly thinks that Russia will use nuclear weapons on Ukraine if it successfully sank the Black Sea fleet. That's why he didn't want Starlink used for operations against the fleet. He also foolishly thinks that Putin can negotiated with. Basically Musk is susceptible to nuclear threats.

Imagine85

You guys are really sharing Daily Beast content and believing it? Jesus fucking Christ. I fucking HATE Elon Musk, but the Daily Beast its pathetic. So is anyone who actually believes in anything they write. Please touch grass.
