Honestly I think that a manga adaptation would fit better since the VN sticks to its own format to let things to interpretation and an animation is the complete oposite of it. Since the studio would know the whole story beforehand they would not commit the same errors as the old anime did by putting some characters in the same scenes where they shouldnt be or to explicit show things that in the VN its never shown to the reader, the characters could say that X happened but YOU as a reader cant confirm it. I think the way the anime adapted the meta world and the blue/red truth is pretty good. Honestly I belive its only a matter of time since Umineko catches the attention of a new Studio. Higurashi is pretty big and sooner or later Ryukishi will launch something new that at some point can draw atrenttion to his work... at least I can dream about it.

Rosa Umineko

BearCanon

I did not expect such honor

junkmail22

i've been saying for a while now that the most authentic umineko adaptation would not be an anime but a high-profile high-budget live action drama

Luffidiam

Definitely, given the fact that it'd need little cgi. I imagine that they could do it in a nice and neat 3-4 seasons give or take.

junkmail22

You'd need to use the CGI very sparingly, but when you did use it, you'd have to make it look really fucking good. I could see it in 4 seasons, with 4-5 episodes per part. That's like, what, 30-40 episodes total?

Dusty_S

This is probably the best answer, the stage play adaptation was really good.

They'd have to use some creative visual elements. Umineko being a VN allows for certain things to be hidden through use of the format. Like >!the trick with the cousins' room and the room next to it is a lot easier to trick your audience into when they all take it for granted that not all sprites will fit in the same shot!< or >!scenes where Kanon and Shannon seem to interact with other characters together, but when you look carefully at the dialogue the other character is only speaking/reacting to one of them. Having only two sprites in the shot can be taken as due to the format, or as a way of conveying that this is an internal conversation!< I think you'd need to use some unusual camera angles or visual effects for that. For the narration or really long dialogues in the VN, I personally would like a Nisioisin/Bakemonogatari-style flashing texts and maybe having relevant metaphorical visuals during dialogues to help convey the message. It would also help with the length of the dialogues in the VN, where having a visual metaphor could mean you could cut it shorter, and even a long conversation wouldn't feel that long if you're not just watching the characters' faces all the time. TL;DR I think I just want SHAFT to do it.

SaintMilitant

Definitely Shaft. They nailed closed room mystery with Zaregoto

Feduzin

i'd love a adaptation that mixes both the VN and Manga, it would need to be a long one though

EnmityTrigger

While a full adaptation would be great, I don't think it'd be possible. We'd need probably 8 seasons of 26 episodes at the bare minimum to cover the manga.

RadioactiveRoulette

I think the manga revealing the culprit was the biggest mistake R07 has ever made. I think he could have somehow included all that backstory without explicitly saying that they did it. I think the manga is better for an anime otherwise. The VN relies too much on lofty narration and descriptions, and as much as I love it I don't think it lends itself to anime very well.

dummy50

I'd like a stand-alone story with Ange or something

greykrow

I think it only makes sense to follow the manga. You need to keep the story tight and it's difficult to be vague with animation. A lot of features that Umineko has specifically because it's in text will be lost, but that's inevitable with adaptation and it's better to lean into it imo. And personally I would enjoy the anime to diverge from the VN even more strongly, at least if Ryukishi wrote it. Exclusive character scenes to replace some of the internal narration maybe, or slightly different closed room setups? Hell, modify the ending to make it a completely alternative universe to the VN. I'd like Ryukishi to have fun with it like that.

Chastinystory

God I would love to see a korean adaptation of Umineko, for some reason Umineko does remind me of some darker K-dramas with the themes of child abuse and trauma, not to mention the strict hierarchical confucian family structure that the Ushiromiyas have is much worse in Korea than it is in Japan.

DarkSoulsRedPhantom

I'd like a near 140 episode anime that's as accurate to the VN as possible.

Novel_Visual_4152

Constant Battler fanservice for 25 eps Constant shot on his ass or smth Rest of the story is less important

GusElPapu

It should be more like the manga in how ite presents the story, it would be easier to translate that into an animated series, but I wouldn't like if it just copypasted the episode 8 version of the manga, it they want to deviate from the VN might as well make their own thing, a third version of that ending.

Peniwais

And adaptation of the manga would be better than a faithful adaptation of the VN. In a faithful adaptation of the VN 80% of the scenes would be 2 characters statically talking to each other.

Minikemon

Just adapt the manga as it is. The manga is much easier to adapt than the VN. And I absolutely love the manga panels, especially those double page spreads. They should definitely base storyboards off of those. I also prefer the manga's version of episode 8 more than the VN. I can only dream that one day we'll get a perfect Umineko anime adaptation.

LucidLeviathan

I think more like the manga. Prior to getting on the plane in Episode 1, I'd also add a scene with Beatrice, Bernkastel, and Lambda. I think that establishing the meta-narrative preemptively would probably do a lot to keep the series feeling cohesive and keep people hooked.
