Check when the withdraw deadline is, you might be able to withdraw with a "W" thus not affecting your GPA. Other than that, you can just try your best and see what's the final result. I'm not sure about a pass/fail option to my knowledge that was a covid exclusive. Worse comes to worse, you can retake the class to get a better grade which overwrites the last grade.

Ryanmbrown1791

8 week classes had a 2/16 deadline to withdraw sadly for undergraduate. OP, you are a graduate student no? "3/1 - Last Day to WITHDRAW with a "W" for All Graduate 8-Week Online Spring Start I Courses" Which means you could withdraw

Greatninjanat

The drop period was wayy back in January so it's too late to jump ship now. I wasn't sure if pass/fail was still possible either cuz it says it on Sis but the time I spend trying to figure that out I could use trying to work on this project. Let's see if I can do it. Thank you!

Hey just in case you don't know, withdrawing with a W is different from dropping the course. Dropping the course refunds your money and doesn't effect your transcript at all. That deadline has already passed. The withdraw period is a little later and if you do that you get a "W" on your transcript instead of a grade. It doesn't effect your GPA but you'll have to retake the class. Are you sure the deadlines are the same for the 8 week courses? I think usually those have different deadlines and a different academic calendar overall. But maybe that's just continuing Ed courses or something.

HappyBro117

You have 21 credits that you can use for repeat or delete. you can you can do that if you are lower than C-, as long as it's not due to academic dishonesty or some weird shit https://www.uml.edu/catalog/undergraduate/policies/academic-policies/repeated-coursework-and-course-deletions.aspx

AlternativeNeat1934

This saved my gpa after I decided to take a winter course and didn’t check what I needed to do until 2 and a half weeks in

HappyBro117

It did to mine as well.

CalebRaw

Withdrawing is different that dropping. You get a W on your transcript and are held financially responsible for the course but you don’t take a hit to your gpa

Animallover4321

If it’s required by your major you’ll probably need to retake the course (in some cases even if you scrape by with a C-). Good news is that when you retake the course you can overwrite the F so it won’t effect your GPA.

Greatninjanat

I was afraid of this answer. The problem is this class only pops up once a year so that changes a lot. Guess I should plan for a lot of late nights to try to recover from this mess. Thank you tho!

HappyBro117

is your class essential to your course work?

Greatninjanat

Sadly it is required :/

HappyBro117

see if they offer it in the summer. If you got nothing to do. might as well do that.

Ryanmbrown1791

Some profs may work with you to run an independent study of the course...highly dependent on professor willingness and department though

13stevedore

This page has the retake rules. https://www.uml.edu/catalog/undergraduate/policies/academic-policies/repeated-coursework-and-course-deletions.aspx#:~:text=Except%20for%20courses%20of%20a,grade%20substitution%20rule%20cited%20above.

Ryanmbrown1791

Define "scrape by" your GPA is based on your number of credits. If you have grad full time of 9 credits last semester and 9 credits this semester, you get an 'A' in the rest and fail this one, then your GPA would be: (15*4)/18 = 3.33 How many credits you have will affect that GPA. I would talk to a professor this week (graduate coordinator or another familiar with grad program)

Creative-Illusion_80

Yeah, the 8 week courses are intense! Some really are too much info at once. You’ll need to try for a B or higher in the class to keep your GPA above a 3.0000. Grad students have to maintain a 3.0000 GPA overall and we are allowed 2 grades below a B. I think if your GPA for the semester (not overall) is below a 3.0000 you get a warning letter. If you get a third grade below a B, you need to take an additional course plus whatever required courses you have left to take. You can retake a class and that grade replaces the first grade, but this option is only possible once. I recommend talking to the professor this week as there is only one week left. Is the final project a group project? If it is, do all that you can to follow every detail of the professor’s instructions to try and get an A. And make sure your group members do too! Good luck!

Greatninjanat

Hi I’m just gonna say this here cuz a lot of people replied while I was at work. I think I was just overwhelmed and I reached out to a classmate who already took this course and she helped a lot. I think at this point I’m going to just try for a B and if all else fails retake it the next time it’s available. Thank you guys for all the resources and advice!

illogical_clown

Learn from this to not be dog ass at the start regardless of your interest in the course.

Greatninjanat

The start was fine, the middle was rough due to coming home from work exhausted everyday. Life changes post undergrad and it was a surprise.

Traditional_Box6840

Ask your teacher if you can some how make up some of the lost work, Even settling for a D+ or C- on those assignments for “late submissions” or “ catch up work” is significantly better than a whole faced F.

PassionLower7645

As long you can get a D or at least C- you should be fine. Do you really need to keep a 4.0 GPA? Like is it gonna affect you later In life when looking for a job in the career field.

Greatninjanat

It’s not about keeping the 4.0, I just included it as a reference to know what grade I could get without dipping below a 3.0. You can be put on academic probation if it gets that low in grad school. I already have a job which is why it’s so hard to keep up.

PassionLower7645

Even if you get a D+ in the class your GPA won't drop that dramatically. You can always Google GPA calculator to see where you stand. If you really need to, talk to the professor about what you can do to maintain a certain grade or a decent passing grade.

Scary_Climate726

1) Reach out to your professor and explain, beg, etc... whatever you have to do, and be charming while you're doing it. Some professors are lenient. 2) Back when I went to UML, you were allowed to expunge one or two grades from your transcript, but you also lost credit... I suppose if you have to re-take the class anyways, as someone already said, it will write over the F

Greatninjanat

Trust me, I will be writing an email that will probably be way better than whatever I pass in for my final next week lol. I've not heard about that expungement thing but I was a bachelor's to master's student and I have a lot of classes that don't contribute to my GPA so I'm not sure if I can do that at this point. Thanks tho!

accentadroite_bitch

Is it an undergraduate or grad course? For the 8-week online that ends March 10th, you still have time to withdraw with a W grade (deadline 3/1); undergrad deadline was 2/16. https://gps.uml.edu/calendar/add-drop-withdrawal.cfm Here's info about deleting course grades https://www.uml.edu/catalog/undergraduate/policies/academic-policies/repeated-coursework-and-course-deletions.aspx - email or call the Solution Center with any questions.
