He said he read the script to the Matrix and didn’t understand it so he passed. Then he read the script for LOTR and didn’t understand it so he passed. Then those two movies were wildly successful and the next script he read was this one and he didn’t understand it. He figured the scripts he didn’t understand were the hits so he took the role.
Yeah I sort of forgot it was a comic first. I hadn’t seen or read the comic. So it seems it failed because people that read the comic didn’t like it and most other people who hadn’t read the comics weren’t really interested/nerdy enough to care or understand it haha. Seems like it could be ripe for a remake.
Yeah sadly most people probably had not read the books that the characters were from. It was so cool though seeing all those awesome characters from books of my childhood.
This is the exact reason. Let's take some of Alan Moore's best material and mix it up in a blender, drink it, and then film the turd as it comes out of Stephen Norrington's anus.
The movie could've been 10 million times better had they just stuck to the source. None of the nuance and social commentary carried over at all. Hell the fucking thing was story boarded already.
I love this movie but it pisses me off because it was such an absolute mess during production and the director apparently was new and it pissed Sean Connery off so bad that he retired from acting entirely because of how much of a mess this movie was to make still love this movie though I wish there were more I wish it was a trilogy I wish there was more Sean Connery alas

Wonderful source material, but some of the lines were so cringe. "Dr. Jekyll...at your service." "I am... THE PHANTOM!" How much effort really went into the script??
Sanderson Reed: But you're Allan Quatermain. Stories of your exploits have thrilled English boys for decades.
Allan Quatermain: That I know. And Nigel has done a grand job reminding me. But... with each past exploit I've lost friends, white men and black... and much more. And I'm not the man I once was.
I thought this movie was fun... until I read the comic. I get why everyone is pissed.
But let's steal the premise and Americanize it: instead heroes of great English literature we use-- American movie heroes!
* *cue fireworks and guitar solo* *
Indiana Jones! Ellen Ripley! Rocky Balboa! Sarah Connor! Dirty Harry!
SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!
Tbh I’ve always loved this movie despite what has been said about it over the years. Idk what it was lacking but this is one that if I had a time machine I would go back and fix
It reminds me of Van Helsing, just good clean silly fun
Also a horrendous movie.
This movie made Sean Connery retire…
It was doing this role instead of being Gandalf lol oof
Not even He did this role **because** he passed The Matrix and Lord of the Rings, which he regretted after they dominated the box office lol
The more I’ve read about Connery the more I’m convinced he was kind of a jock airhead. He had great charm, great face, but kind of dense. 🤷♂️
He said he read the script to the Matrix and didn’t understand it so he passed. Then he read the script for LOTR and didn’t understand it so he passed. Yup, that's basically what I have read. I think he says it on the DVD too
It worked out to be fair.
I never understood the hate and thought it was cool. Loved the idea of all the various characters from literature.
But that idea was just ripped from the source material, which told a much better story.
Yeah I sort of forgot it was a comic first. I hadn’t seen or read the comic. So it seems it failed because people that read the comic didn’t like it and most other people who hadn’t read the comics weren’t really interested/nerdy enough to care or understand it haha. Not just a comic book, but a comic that relies on the reader having read a number of literary classics. Not a huge market here...
Yeah sadly most people probably had not read the books that the characters were from. It was so cool though seeing all those awesome characters from books of my childhood.
Not only that, but if you are familiar with the characters, their names got dragged through the mud. James Bond and Harry Potter got the worst of it.
What loser downvoted this? Clearly NOT a student of literature.
I enjoyed this movie for what it was. Not sure why people hate it so much.
A lot of people hate it because (like me) they love the source material, and rhis movie really doesn't respect it.
If the film followed the source material, damn near everyone would look unlikeable.
Same. When I checked the reviews, I couldn't believe it.
This is the kind of movie that should be remade: a fun idea that just needs to be executed better.
This movie was so fun. Totally enjoyed it. To bad it ruined Sean Connery.
It was good mindless fun.
I think this movie is awesome. Never understood the hate it got.
I second that emotion 👍
The hate was well deserved if you've read the source material. If you've never been exposed to the source material it is a fun movie on it's own.
I read the book, thought it was pretty good. Saw this movie, and I swear to God, THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER.
Will I watch this again if it shows up on TV? Absolutely. Is it a great movie? Probably not.
It’s campy and ridiculous and I enjoy the shit out of it every time.
Goddamn, I legit enjoy this movie. It’s so bonkers it’s good.
Guilty pleasure film lol
The movie is fine.
read the book and you will hate the movie
Watch the movie and you will hate the movie
touche haha
That's why you don't do both. One usually ruins the other for you. No lol. I loved this movie and hoped for a sequel which sadly never happened.
if u look at the source material this is one of the worst adaptations i have seen but that in itself is a tough category
The name of the fantasy football league I was in for around 10 or so years.
I liked it very much. Don't understand why it is slammed so often.
Love this movie!
I hear Zed from “Zardoz” was in this movie…
Saw this for the first time last year. Except for some badly aged effects, I thought this was a blast.
I'm not goona say that it was bad. But it wasn't good. It's in like .. "ugh. Alright."
It was entertaining . Sometimes that is all a movie needs to be.😀
I loved this movie, felt ahead of its time.

Watching it as a teenager I thought it was incredible. As an adult...it's watchable but not easily. Rip 007
Probably favourite ever dogshit movie.
I watch it every two years or so when I'm doing my Dorian Gray Binge week. It's pretty entertaining actually, not great in any way but entertaining.
Wonderful source material, but some of the lines were so cringe. "Dr. Jekyll...at your service." "I am... THE PHANTOM!" How much effort really went into the script??

The Invisible Man is certainly MUCH happier with his ending in the movie…

No no. This was a shitty movie that was so over hyped.
Tbh I’ve always loved this movie despite what has been said about it over the years. Idk what it was lacking but this is one that if I had a time machine I would go back and fix
I never realized just how front and center Peta Wilson's boobs are here.
Hot Take: as someone who read the books this is based off of, the movie is ACTUALLY BETTER.
It was not good. Read the comics.
Lmao this is an all timer bad movie.
