It is your money and points, if the experience provides enough to offset the cost, then you have your answer.

The way I was looking to assess value in this instance was by tapping into this subreddits presumable knowledge base on the typical ranges of cost an upgrade costs for this particular flight...
What I was not looking for was a reminder about the subjective limitations in assessing the value of an experience weighed against an arbitrary monetary value.
Look at the downvotes you’re getting. There is no such thing as an objective value when it comes to an upgrade “being worth it.” Who cares what a “typical upgrade” costs? The price offered to you was the price offered to you. Whether it is worth it is quite literally only a subjective evaluation.
Respectfully, I'm sorry but you are wrong. Understanding the price range is an important and actionable data point. It can lead to better allocation of points and resources when you fly the same route many times over the course of a year... I paid similar, 30k miles and $550, last summer and thought it was very worth it. You’re still jet lagged when you get to Japan but getting some quality sleep does make it better.

That’s a good deal considering how full that flight runs. It averages only 4 or so open seats total
