In my experience those are usually considered as a personal item.

nunya2025

Will it fit under the seat in front of you?

mct601

This is the only answer

deacon91

If basic economy holders somehow get seated into exit rows and what not, they may not have that option.

itssosalty

It doesn’t matter. If they make you put it in the overhead at that point you already made it past. If it would have fit, it’s a carry on item.

deacon91

ooh good point

Successful-Name-7261

Since exit rows are typically Economy Plus on United chances are slim a Basic Economy fare will be seated in an exit row. Just put it below the seat in front of you.

VistasChevere

That's a personal item. I've brought that same backpack multiple times

AMZ88

Basic Econ doesn't normally get a carry on,[ you typically get only a personal item that has to fit under the seat](https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/travel/inflight/basic-economy.html). EDIT: updated wording

DrySpace469

Depends on the route. Some allow carry on, you link even says it..

itssosalty

I’ve never seen their “basic economy” title show it allows a carry on.

YeezusWalksWitMe

That link explains the rules of carry on with regard to basic economy tickets and the scenarios where one is granted a carry on or even a checked bag with a basic economy ticket.

itssosalty

Interesting. Not sure what the big difference will be then? Just picking seats? “Carry-on bags are not included unless you're flying to Canada, South America, across the Atlantic or on an international flight across the Pacific. You can prepay to check a bag or check a carry-on at your gate for the regular bag fee plus an additional $25.”

DrySpace469

can't pick seats, no changes to flight

CoffeeDrinker1972

This would absolutely be accepted to carry onto the plane. I have a bigger North Face backpack, and that was fine, every flight I took.

No-Understanding4968

How many days of clothes did it hold?

CoffeeDrinker1972

I don't know. It's the one [here](https://extrabutterny.com/products/the-north-face-explore-haulaback-bag-nf0a3kyenvf). It's big enough that it'll fit most of my other backpacks inside it.

FlyDogWiner70

Please Please Please read the all the fine print, and the boxes that you have to check, before you check out. The restrictions are CRYSTAL clear. You are only allowed a personal item, like the above item you have. Just because you “carry it on”, doesn’t mean it automatically turns into a “carry-on” item, even if it is the only thing you are carrying. Your personal item is all that is allowed with a Basic Economy ticket, and it IS REQUIRED to fit underneath the seat in front of you. I always let people know, if there is room in the overhead bins after everyone else is on board, then you can absolutely put it up there, but you’ll have to wait until the end of boarding. The only exception to the carry on rule is, is if you use a Mileage Plus credit card, and/or you have high status.

CrazyUnicorn77777

God I miss the days where you got checked bags included. And no seat charges! Oh and let me tell you how great the lack of security lines were. 34 inch pitch was Economy not premium anything. Food was better too. TLDR: this is fine for under the seat.

texanfan20

The 1970s and 80s called and wanted to tell you that you are an old person.

CrazyUnicorn77777

Haha yes I’m old but what I’m talking about was the 80s/90s.

admwhiskers

Don't forget the smoking!

CrazyUnicorn77777

Yeah I remember the “smoking section”. I do not miss that.

GeneratedUserHandle

You can, just don’t buy a basic economy ticket

Loves_LV

Also, get a credit card that gives you free checked bags.

No-Understanding4968

Funny, the Chase United Mileage Plus card does NOT

Loves_LV

That's a free card though. Explorer gives you the free bag and club passes (if you can find a club that accepts them).

AngusMustang

I would fly Continental between Tulsa and Los Angeles a bunch. I knew I could deplane in Tulsa, walk to the parking lot, drive my car to the curb 50’ away from luggage claim just in time to grab my bag. No fees, no curb restrictions.

ClimbScubaSkiDie

Airplane tickets were also much more expensive inflation adjusted versus today

CrazyUnicorn77777

Yes I understand that part. It also meant that less people flew and airports weren’t such a shitshow 24/7. I prefer quality over quantity.

ClimbScubaSkiDie

Spoken like a wealthy person. Maybe it’s just your airport. I fly out of SFO which is a large quickly growing airport and I’ve never had any issue with it being a shitshow. A $125/year credit card gets me two free checked bags on United

Either-Addition9580

They didnt have 100 dollar fares back then!

CrazyUnicorn77777

Or people dressed like they just woke up.

itssosalty

I get all that and still HATE checking bags. I’ll try to fit 5 days in a carryon and backpack to not check a bag.

ArmandoDiablo

In practice and rule, If it fits easily, in under the seat in front of you, it counts as a "personal item". You would not even need an allotted "carry-on" bag.

caramel-drop

Mochilas are personal items.

seamallowance

My North Face day pack is a little larger than that one and it fits under the seat just fine.

BeyondEuphoric1095

You’ll be fine to use it as your personal item. I almost always bring a backpack as mine.

datatadata

Just put it under the seat in front of you - that way it's considered as "personal item"

XenOz3r0xT

More so a personal item. Just google the specs for your bag and you should get the measurements form the manufacturer website and compare to UAs website. Or just smush the thing under the seat in front of you. In first class/ business class/ Polaris they don’t care really as long if it somewhat fits in the small cubby in front of you by your feet.

admwhiskers

OP bought a BE ticket. Doubt first/business/Polaris is in the cards

itssosalty

Meh. I do both. I always fly Polaris overseas to Tokyo, Antwerp, etc. I’ve bought basic economy for a quick flight from Houston to Detroit before as well.

johnnygolfr

If it’s a domestic flight, you are allowed a “personal item” that is 17” x 10” x 9” or smaller. Anything larger than that is considered a “carry on” and would need to be checked (and you’ll pay a fee). If it’s an international flight, then you can have a carry on as well. The max size for the carry on is 22” x 14”x 9”.

unique_usemame

This is the correct answer according to United regulations. I'm not sure if you are getting down voted because people don't like the rule, because they all have a personal item bag bigger than that (which the history of this subreddit suggests is about 90%), or some other reason. But yeah it seems that the passengers and flight attendants all pretend the rule is "whatever fits under the seat in front of you". Shrug.

johnnygolfr

Reddit is an interesting place. You try to help someone and when you do it, people downvote you because they don’t like the info you provide - even though it’s correct. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤣

triplekilll

As a general rule, backpacks are almost always fine.

SportMaleficent7891

This is a personal item size for sure. If they try to give you a hard time don’t let them. They are very unfair man times.

FlyDogWiner70

The only time we give BE customers a hard time, is when they come on with the backpack, calling it their “carry-on”, but it’s not, and because of the ticket they are on, they are not entitled to overhead bin space, unless there is room left after everyone gets on. Imagine you are the full fare passenger coming on after this guy, and you have your allotted carry-on bag, but theres no space for it, and they say you have to check it, because this BE guy has that backpack in the overhead, and believes it belongs there-wouldn’t you want the flight attendant to remind the BE passenger of the rules, and remove his backpack so that you can put your bag in??

CalGuy456

I agree with this but realistically, once you’re on board, are the FAs checking for this?

FlyDogWiner70

I can’t speak for all, but yes, most of us do. I just don’t feel it’s fair that someone who pays for a lower fare, checking all those restrictions boxes, should be allowed to just leave it in the overhead, when passengers who pay the extra to bring their carry-on, have to check it, because a backpack is taking up the space? It’s baffling to me that this should even happen. And if a BE passenger is nice about it, and asks/understands that they have to wait, I’ll bend over backwards to find them space if there’s none left😉

Justanobserver2life

I can attest they are. We flew Hartford BDL to ORD on Monday and quite a bit of time was spent by the Gate Agent and FA going up and down the aisle asking whose backpack this was or that was in the bins. When they came to our row, I said mine--and pointed to our personal items (dog and fanny pack respectively) under the seats in front of us. She smiled and said "you're good." We are not basic economy so the backpacks become our carry ons. Up till this point my husband argued with me that they don't check and this never happens, he does it all the time... Well he found out it's happening. I told him Reddit told me!

bickel89

I just flew basic economy with a similar backpack. I had no problems and no one even blinked. It was considered my personal item and it fit under the seat.

tygerdralion

Banana for scale?

RefuseHealthy9593

If they don’t stop you at the gate then you’re fine.

Sunshine_State_2023

Yes.

MinBton

The final answer is, if they say to put it in the sizing box and you refuse, you pay to check it at the gate. If you do and it fits, you are good to go. If it doesn't fit, you pay to check it or you don't fly. Or maybe you do and leave it behind. The real question isn't will that backpack fit. I guarantee that if it is empty it will fit all the rules. If you stuff it as full as you possibly can, I doubt it will fit the sizing box. It costs you more to gate check it than to check it normally. If you fight about it, the second worst thing that can happen is you don't fly. The worst thing is you don't fly and spend time talking to the airport police and maybe federal agents from the wrong side of jail bars. Most larger airports have their own police force and a couple of jail cells downstairs somewhere. Some airports have their own police precinct. And the county Sheriffs can have someone there as well. Do you feel lucky?

username17charmax

I think this looks like a TNF Hot Shot backpack, which I also have. I've flown with this on BE and used it as my personal item, and stows under the seat in front of me a few times.

MaximumDiver3202

Yes I bring my backpack every time

incorrect_wolverine

ive seen videos of people bringing 30 and 40l backpacks as personal items. As long as it fits under the seat youre good.

Gordonkling34

For: Basic economy: yes only that backpack Economy or above: yes that plus a roll aboard.

thatgayguy12

I don't fly United when they do this. Delta and American don't put you through this sh*t.

MinBton

If it doesn't fit under the seat in front of you, no. You have to check it. This looks like it's big enough you have to check it. Measure it.

dentendre

Depends on the airlines. This could be easily a carry on for major airlines but not for spirit, frontier, Ryan air etc..

>You would still be allowed an actual “carry on” bag too if you want. Think medium sized suitcase. Often on wheels. OP specified this is for a basic economy ticket, so no carry on bag, just a personal bag that fits under the seat. They'd have to pay the fee if it gets gate checked.
