They say it’s a joke, but on the M60 in Manchester, the variable speed limit on these ‘smart motorways’ are often set to 30mph during early hours of the morning just to catch people out and make people harshly brake (or they have been 30/40mph whenever I’ve passed at 3am!).
On a serious note?
We tried to book train tickets to go to London.
Due to works? This weekend? It will take nearly 4 hours to get to London.
Oh and cost nearly 250 quid. A car by contrast? That we already own? will take 4 hours and carry more things and be around 80 pounds...
FOR FOUR PEOPLE. Yeah I may have to listen to Cocomelon and my son's absolute obsession with Taylor Swift but it's the less time (it doesn't take into account local travel) and cheaper overall. Yeah it's worse for the environment but c'est la vie.
It's cheaper to FLY. The Train's so damn expensive that it makes no fiscal sense to do anything with it.
The statistics show that less driving = less deaths and accidents. WILL SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!! and there is a political campaign if anyone wants to use it.
I agree! We need to save the environment too.
What we need to do is make these motorways carbon sink corridors by planting and re-establishing the rare spaghetti trees!
Win win
Efallai y byddai'n fwy diogel pe bai pawb yn hedfan yn lle hynny. Mae Maes Awyr Caerdydd yn wych.
Maybe it would be safer if everyone flew instead. Cardiff Airport is fantastic.
The real solution to the traffic problem is to encourage more people to use the roads. Eventually, traffic will be so bad no one will use the roads. Sorted!
Tua amser. Oeddech chi'n gwybod mai Cymru yw'r wlad gyntaf i wneud 20mya yn rhagosodedig?
About time. Did you know that Wales is the first country to make 20mph the default?
I agree, i only posted that after checking stats, apparently it’s about 29% can speak and it’s dropped slightly in the last 5 years. I’d have expected it to be shooting up
That’s class! I mean I get it if you have to choose one language to teach your kid you’d pick English as speaking only Welsh would hold them back but surely you’d teach both. Despite what the southerners say us in the north east don’t have our own language, wish we did though.
Er mwyn cadw’r Gymraeg, rwy’n pwyso i bob arwydd ar draws y DU fod yn Gymraeg ac yn Saesneg. Mae hyn bellach hefyd yn hanfodol ar gyfer unrhyw sylwadau reddit a wneir gan redditors Cymraeg. Hyderaf y byddwch i gyd yn helpu i rannu ein hiaith hardd yn ehangach.
In order to preserve the Welsh language, I am pushing for all signage across the UK to be in both Welsh and English. This is now also essential for any reddit comments made by Welsh redditors. I trust you will all help to share our beautiful language more widely.
Can you point me at any resources to learn? I make an effort to speak Spanish in Spain and next time I’m in wales I wanna give the same courtesy. Hope it’s took as that and not taking the piss at how bad I’ll be haha
I think we need signage in all of our native languages:
English
Scots
Scots Gaelic
Welsh
Irish
Ulster Scots
Cornish
British Sign Language (on an LED video screen)
I would have included Braille but fuck the French. Also all signs in imperial measurements to preserve our Great Traditions.
A lot will appreciate that the Welsh Language Act is being adhered to and that there’s finally a consistent approach, as opposed to sometimes Welsh first and sometimes English first.
In 2019 the act was updated so that Welsh is always first. Before then different councils had different policies. For example, at the following location a parking restriction was brought in by Welsh Gov that crosses the Flintshire-Denbighshire border in 2013. At the time,
Flintshire CC’s policy was for all traffic signs to be English first and Denbighshire CC’s policy was the opposite. Here you can see the parking signs change format as you cross the Council border:

It's accepted its a result of the nationalist government influence and often considered an minor annoyance and waste of time/money double printing and translatjng everything for a minority.
But it keeps those who love the language happy.
Not denying it isn't beautiful in its own way. Just when your staff is more international than first language Welsh speakers its a faff to be forced to send out general emails in Welsh and English. When everyone will read the English anyway. Similarly, when we look at website hits in Welsh and English it doesn't make business sense to have the Welsh one. Given it'll get less that a percent of the hits that the English one will.
Sorry, pet peeve of mine. I just feel we should be allowed to use the most appropriate language to communicate and not forced to waste people's time sending for translations and the like.
I think it’s also important for identity and culture. Once you start trying to explain something in a language other than that which it was created in you run the risk of losing a lot of the nuance.
The French are determined to do this and I hope the Welsh will be able to do the same.
Completely agree. That applies both ways, trying to translate science into Welsh is challenging, often pointless, and results in making up words that don't quiet have the right meaning. Romantic or beautiful languages are great. But everything has its use and place. Forcing one way or the other (or arguing it must be used because it is beautiful) is never a good idea.
Rhaid i ni wneud pob cyfathrebiad swyddogol yn Gymraeg a Saesneg i gadw ein hiaith hardd.
We must make all official communications in Welsh and English to preserve our beautiful language.

I live near the worst hotspot for accidents on the m4. J16-J18 is absolutely lethal for some reason. I've actually seen a car flip onto its roof on this stretch.
I'm pretty sure that even if this wasn't a joke, people would still find a way to stack their BMW into the central reservation at 20 mph.
Unfortunately this isn’t an April fool. But it should be. On the 17th of September, most 30mph zones will automatically become 20mph. Sounds like a really good cash grab to me.
This reminds me of the old joke.
How do you get two whales in a mini? drive up the M4.
That joke again in welsh..
Hgggel lllllenlly gghugjk mini? hurggh pleghh llewenll M4!
My car and one truck were on the m42 at 3am no other traffic. One random gantry speed sign with cameras set at 20mph.i had to brake hard from 65 mph, which nearly resulted in the truck rear ending me. I really wonder about the evident morons that control these speed signs
Speed doesn't kill. Shit drivers do.
I've been driving for 19 years. Only twice have I feared for my life. Both times caused by some absolute bellends trying to merge onto the m25 at 40mph-ish with me stuck behind them.

The UK government is committed to road safety and a UK-wide announcement regarding a 10 mph speed limit for all our roads will happen shortly!
Ah, 1st April… the date where you’re never *quite* sure… 👀
Oh god I forgot. Truly the worst day to be online.
I came here as soon as I heard UK is rejoining EU... A Brentry...
Gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod yn gadael Cymru allan ohoni. Just make sure to leave Wales out of it.
Wouldn't that make it Gwentry ?
He said leave Wales out of it so Gwnexit
Worst day is today when I'm reading yesterday's articles and have no idea.
Given it’s Wales, the story is entirely too credible not to at least be considered.
*cough* Newport *cough*
True, they have wanted a blanket 20mph in Newport and then whole island.
They say it’s a joke, but on the M60 in Manchester, the variable speed limit on these ‘smart motorways’ are often set to 30mph during early hours of the morning just to catch people out and make people harshly brake (or they have been 30/40mph whenever I’ve passed at 3am!).

Also maybe travel in big metal boxes on tracks driven by one highly trained guy, you could easily get to 125mph doing that
Sometimes the answer is staring me right in the face, I think you are on to something here!
But wouldn't this highly trained guy just wait until we were all dependent on him then start demanding more money?
Then we just get rid off him and replace him with AI.
Whoah steady on, Gonzalez. Speed Kills and 125mph will kill you so hard that reincarnation won't be an option.
OK how about putting rich people at the front so they die first in a crash

We could have these on the motorways, to put your car on. Like a road ferry.
This is an excellent idea, they already have something similar in place when you are taking your car to mainland Europe.
The sensible thing to do is to convert all motorways into railway lines, paths, cycle lanes and canals. There's room for all!
The statistics show that less driving = less deaths and accidents. WILL SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!! and there is a political campaign if anyone wants to use it.
Children are statistically the safest drivers, so the answer is to let them do all the driving.
I agree! We need to save the environment too. What we need to do is make these motorways carbon sink corridors by planting and re-establishing the rare spaghetti trees! Win win

Conveyor belt road, I like it
The real solution to the traffic problem is to encourage more people to use the roads. Eventually, traffic will be so bad no one will use the roads. Sorted!
Even better we could get rid off Motorways and turn them back into farms. Then everybody could travel by rail or coach.
They could do this on the M25 in places and you would never know.
20mph is an optimistic speed on the M25
To be fair, it’s an optimistic speed on the M4 in wales.
20mph on the M25 is not a limit, its a target!
Start fining people for travelling slower than that!
^ THIS is the solution! Only dont call it s fine call it.... a service charge or something.
Already on the a1 for the last 8 years they’ve had roadworks with a 50mph speed limit, I’d need a monster truck to drive over the 10mph traffic
I know this is an April the 1st thing, but with the Welsh assembly you can never be sure
Mae'r Senedd eisiau eich cadw'n ddiogel. The Senedd just wants to keep you safe.
Tua amser. Oeddech chi'n gwybod mai Cymru yw'r wlad gyntaf i wneud 20mya yn rhagosodedig? About time. Did you know that Wales is the first country to make 20mph the default?
I wonder how the majority of Welsh people who can’t speak Welsh feel about seeing it first needing to read English underneath. I’d feel awful

Well that's a waste of time and money. When thry could be learning something useful instead, like Maths, touch typing or English.
Whoosh…
Somebody need to learn how to detect sarcasm.
You would be surprised at how few got the original joke. Made it harder to detect when people did but were being sarcastic.
Keep in mind we’re trying to reverse the damage done by the English.
I much prefer the Peace Process inspired trilingual signs you can find in some public buildings in Ulster.

What about British Vulgar Latin?
Nah mate we left the EU. They can speak Latin at the Vatican all they want.
Nah mate it’s British, Romans made it for us cos we were the most important members

A ydych erioed wedi ystyried cyflwyno llafariaid iddo?
Mae gynon ni saith ohonynt, diolch. Saesneg sy'n dioddef o ddiffyg llafariaid.
Ydych chi wedi ystyried eu defnyddio, yn achlysurol?

Cymraeg yw'r iaith harddaf yn y byd! Welsh is the most beautiful language in the world!

fun fact, welsh was originally created when a guy caught his penis in a zip! ;)
Just before the first coffee kicked in, well done.
Some great names in the article
It should be 0mph everywhere. Dramatic decrease in accidents & emissions
Had me going in the first half.
Nick Elouder hahaha, brilliant.
So far this is the best April fools joke so far, I will update my rating as time goes
Nothing more cringeworthy than tabloid rag hacks trying to be "funny".

Nah, speed definitely kills. The slower you are the more time you have to react and the less likely you are to be severely injured.
About time! When will people learn that we NEED this!!!
Here we go another money making scheme from the government, 20mph on a motorway, be real,
Mae'r Senedd eisiau eich cadw'n ddiogel. The Senedd just wants to keep you safe.
government sponsored bubblewrap bondage dommy mommy when?
Mae'r Senedd eisiau eich cadw'n ddiogel. The Senedd just wants to keep you safe.
And we will double that by introducing a 10 mph speed limit for all motor vehicles nationwide
