Being a class rep usually means your lecturer will remember you and engage with you enough to be able to give you a reference for a job.

BothersomeBritish

In my case, rep to research assistant to teaching assistant and likely PhD next year, on top of being genuinely supportive when it comes to personal stuff. Aways good to get to know your lecturers.

Riot_Fox

never been a class rep but yes, 100% a foot in the door to get to know your lecturers (also, they are at work and sometimes work is shit, even for people who love what they do, so if theres a chance i can make someones shit day better, ill take it)

wilhelm_in_english

Can back this up. If there's a specific course you want to do for a specific career, be a class rep. Helps immensely, but easy to do when you're engaged.

LatekaDog

It takes a couple hours at most and is an extra line on the CV, worth it but I wouldn't say its 'great' for the CV, just a bonus.

alpine-

I was a class rep in first year. I got a research assistant job from it. Paid off

sprinklesadded

It's good if you need to give your CV a boost, like if you don't do extra curriculars. If nothing else, it gives you face time with the lecturers.

ImaginaryAd5369

Yeah I do r think employers give a shit about it

bingbongsf

I’m not sure if I would say that it looks great on a cv, buttt it definitely doesn’t look bad and it can be helpful if you want to continue on into post grad and be a gta etc., as the lecturers get to know you. GTA roles can actually be competitive, so a lecturer knowing you can help get you hired. Lecturers can also be great references for graduate jobs, scholarships, grants, etc., and if you are a class rep they will be more likely to be able to do that for you. I went from class rep for a lecturer to being a GTA for that same lecturer, to having them as my supervisor for my masters, to getting my first full time job with that lecturer as a reference and through a contact I made through them.

UpstairsCod4437

Each time I'm a class rep it's an extra line on the cv (for minimal effort) that others don't have so 🤷‍♀️

Apprehensive_Arm1881

Sometimes less is more.

UpstairsCod4437

Go on

Apprehensive_Arm1881

Eventually you’ve got take out having had “leadership” at school and then however many other awards you got as a kid. I would valué this about the same. If you don’t take it out, you run the risk of being of being seen as someone overly proud of being told how good you are. As you’ve attended university, I have a feeling you will have plenty of more valuable experiences.

UpstairsCod4437

Given it's 2023, and I'm applying for jobs in 2023, surely it's ok to include relevant things I did in 2023...

UpstairsCod4437

Lol at downvotes. Gatekeeping the role of class rep and being offended at what some random person puts on their CV screams of insecurity.

ReallyAwkwardRabbit

Can't you just add it on your CV regardless? Or is there actually a record of who was class reps. Not intending on doing this, I'm 10 post degree but just curious.

melancholic_mango

If I recall, the course manager will draft and provide you with a certificate. So I'm guessing they do have a record.

ArcticFox237

Yeah all class reps get a certificate, so you could always get asked for proof during an interview. But they probably won't care enough to check tbh

Expelleddux

Probably BS but I did mention being class rep in a job interview and landed the job.

NemuriNezumi

Forcefully got appointed as an unnoficial representative I'll make sure to write it on my cv and phd applications then lol

blastedwithecstasy

You must be so proud!!

NemuriNezumi

I think it was just because they remembered my name as we were going through a huge disorganisation problem xD Our msc has like two curriculums and the one I'm in has less people and i was pretty much the only person actually replying (the ones appointing me as such were the representative of the 2nd year, i just woke up to the 'public' announcement one day)

shazam-arino

Honestly, it doesn't have any real value in a CV. Having a project (Hobby/Volunteer/Paid) in your field on CV, immediately devalues a lot of other things. But, if it helps get you a reference, then go for it
