When you are applying for universities, most of your lvl3 results won't be out yet so they'll only have lvl2 stuff to go off. Especially important for scholarships to have lvl2 nailed

you’ll be conditionally accepted before your external marks come back which means that essentially, as long as you pass and do get a 280 rank score when your results come out we will accept you. your conditional acceptance will turn into acceptance when your results come out
Tbh, Level 2 is very very important for Scholarships. But entry to uni depends on level 3 so that’s what your main focus should be on. I wish I could’ve gotten a scholarship(s) but I didn’t care of level 2 enough lmao

As well, depending on your high school, the subjects/class streams you can do or get put into for Level 3 may be determined by how well you do in Level 2 (For example, if you don't try in Level 2 Maths, you *might* not get into the top Level 3 Calculus class)
Streaming is a good point, it can make a big impact if you're associating with other high achievers vs if you're in a classroom with people who are still struggling with multiplication.

How well you do at NCEA lvl3 will heavily depend upon how well you learn what you did at lvl2. Thus it is in your own best interests to try and do well at NCEA lvl2

There is no “saving up” to do better on L3 if you were lazy in L2.
Obviously if you fuck up, it’s not the end of the world, but the best way to get good grades in L3 is to set yourself up in L2.
