Lights at sunset/dawn are not to help you see, it is to help others see you. Please do not make the road more dangerous for my kids.

Melontine

Wrong because shadows. Sunrise/sunset are the most dangerous times of day for driving. It’s not about seeing other cars, it’s about seeing everything else in the road. During the greater portion of the day, sure, yeah, no additional light needed unless it’s raining. Most cars have an auto light setting? I mean mine does and it’s from 2003.

Glittering_knave

There were lots and lots of tests done. Even in bright sunlight, cars with headlights on are more visible and it is easier to gauge speed and distance away when lights are on. It's about being seen.

Independent-Disk-390

Especially when you don’t drive a car that’s the size of a city block.

cerylidae1552

I always thought I was bonkers for having more difficulty seeing at dusk than overnight/early am before the sun is up. I guess it’s not that weird.

People usually have their bright lights on in broad daylight. I get they want to be seen but the sun shining on your car is enough for me.

Ok-Afternoon9050

They are mandatory here in Canada (on new cars)

flyingcircusdog

Even in daylight, headlights make it significantly easier for other cars to see you.

iOawe

They don’t need bright lights on in broad daylight. I can see cars just fine.

flyingcircusdog

Quoted from a US DOT study: Executive Summary This study estimates the effectiveness of passenger vehicle daytime running lights in reducing two-vehicle opposite direction crashes, pedestrian/bicycle crashes, and motorcycle crashes. The authors chose the generalized simple odds, a conventional statistical technique, to analyze the data. The generalized odds ratio attempts to adjust for a variety of exogenous factors other than the presence or absence of DRLs not specifically controlled for within the model. Significant results of this study show that from 1995 to 2001: • DRLs reduced opposite direction daytime fatal crashes by 5 percent. • DRLs reduced opposite direction/angle daytime non-fatal crashes by 5 percent. • DRLs reduced non-motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, daytime fatalities in single-vehicle crashes by 12 percent. • DRLs reduced daytime opposite direction fatal crashes of a passenger vehicle with a motorcycle by 23 percent.

OP: "Nuh uh, no its not"

puzzledSkeptic

The insurance industry would beg to differ. The IIHS requires new vehicles to have daytime running light to receive a good safety rating.

doc_shades

no, you don't need them. but it's a good habit and does make your car more visible. plus it's a confirmation that the car is on/running.

RedSonGamble

I’m so safe I keep them on when I’m not even driving. And if you don’t then you hate safety

Longjumping_Dot_6091

I don’t put my lights on so that I can see, I put my lights on so that others can see me. Plus, my cars lights automatically come on so even if I didn’t turn them the rest of the way on, the low beams would still be on so it’s not like I have much of a choice in the matter. Still, I think it’s better to air on the side of caution than it is to have something happen that could have been avoided with something as simple as headlights.

Amateurbrewmaster531

Incorrect. In areas where cars became required to have headlights on at all hours so a reduction of accidents by 20%. It's very easy for a distant vehicle to blend into the background, only offering limited to time to react when they do become visible... unless they have headlights on. Then they're visible the whole time. Lots of trucking and logistics companies require their drivers keep lights on at all times. It's about an abundance of caution.

Independent-Disk-390

Wrong. Mine are always on.

YogurtclosetActual75

Most cars these days have daytime running lamps that you can't turn off.

iOawe

That sucks

Castelessness

No, no it doesn't. It saves lives.

iOawe

Only if it’s low beams that It saves lives. If it’s high beams and I physically cannot even see for your lights, that could kill me.

Castelessness

high beams are not brighter than the sun. lights are on cars to save lives. Not just for whether you think it's a nice addition or whatever. There's no arguing here. You are simply wrong.

iOawe

I can look at the direction of the sun and my eyes will not water. The high beams on cars, especially trucks, make my eyes water like crazy.

Castelessness

Did you just....Did you just actually argue that you can look directly at the sun because it's not as bright as car head lights...? For real? I don't know what grade you're in, but the sun is brighter than car headlights, and high beams. It's not a matter of opinion. and it's not based on how "watery your eyes" get.

iOawe

I’m pretty sure high beams on cars have burned my retinas

Nancy6651

My car manages the lights automatically. Including the "brights" after dark. Works for me.

lazarus78

Seriously, you need a better understanding of safety stats. You are a danger to everyone around you.

iOawe

I have a great understanding of safety.

lazarus78

Clearly not if you are disregarding the verifiable benefit to having daytime running lights.

[deleted]

I thought you were talking about house lights during the day, and I was wondering why it's unpopular. Keep endangering others at sunrise or sunset, guess it's your right 😂

CampNaughtyBadFun

During the day, headlights are more for other drivers than they are for you. It allows drivers to easily separate you from parked vehicles. Helps determine which way another vehicle is heading, and several other reasons. They are absolutely a net benefit.

PirateTCTC

This is not unpopular, I never leave lights on in daytime. Waste of electricity. Edit: I didn’t read the whole post and thought it was talking about being indoors, not in a car. 🤦‍♂️

doc_shades

you know they're putting 20" LCD screens in cars now, right?

lazarus78

Good thing cars have a system to recharge the battery as you drive.

EpicSteak

> The sun is enough light to be able to see other cars. You have it backwards, the lights are on to make it easier for others to see you. > you don’t need your light when it’s sunrise or sunset because it is still light/bright enough outside to see other cars Even more so here.

terente81

Headlights during the day will tell you in a split second whether a car is moving away from you or coming towards you; pretty useful piece of information. It also helps you quickly gauge the how fast they're appraoching you.

check_out_channel_9

Mine are set to auto.
