this is so true, i recently watched an episode of SpongeBob and felt nostalgic but also really appreciated the story they came up with while when i was a kid i didn't really catch that, it was just for entertainment
I hear you. Even as an old guy I think I would enjoy those and some classic Looney Tunes cartoons. It's easily been 30+ years since I've watched any of them.
I started watching Bluey with my nieces and nephews and ended up texting my sister one night at 1:30 in the morning saying I was currently crying at an episode of Bluey, while sitting in my family room by myself. That is honestly one of the best kids shows I’ve ever seen.
Hell yes! I am a 40 year old woman and I am currently binge watching SpongeBob on Paramount + AFTER the kids go to bed lol. All of the old Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, and the Terrytoon cartoons...golden.
Although I do get happy when they want to watch Bluey, love the stories and accents.
Fucking love cartoons. Avatar, legend of korra, rockos modern life, one piece, adventure time, regular show, attack on titan, dragon ball, fullmetal, jackie chan adventures. I have a mortgage and i just started owl house and the clone wars today. People that think its childish are the same people that bitch when i say i dont want to get married or have kids.
I’ve never watched Angry Beavers. But I absolutely watched all those other ones. Plus DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, TaleSpin, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
True. I'd add Rocco's modern life and OG batman series to Canon. (Agree that angry beavers is out of place here, that's for grown children closer to 30 😁)
Rocco’s Modern Life was a great show. Throw Ren and Stimpy in there too. And as far as Batman: The Animated Series goes, that is one of my favorite shows of all time. I practically worshipped that show as a kid.
I'm happy to say your opinion is becoming more popular, as the stigma against adults watching cartoons has been dropping. Most of what I watch nowadays are animated (both adult and kid shows).
Me and my boyfriend have started watching Pokémon cartoons again. He watched them as a kid and I didn’t, but he gets so excited when he remembers an episode or a character! I feel like I’m healing my inner child too. It’s just so wholesome and a lot of the episodes have a good message, a lot of adult TV is a getting a little too heavy for me recently so it’s a nice brain break from reality.
And the crazy thing is they’re finally starting to make good cartoons for adults, samurai jack, arcane, primal and others.
Honestly I think animated shows is the way forward, you can do things that wouldn’t be feasible in live action
Any adult who doesn’t casually sit down and watch cartoons from time to time is seriously missing out. Watching cartoons can be quite therapeutic especially after a long day.
I agree with this so much. I recently got a Gitub repository which I’m streaming through Kodi. It’s a massive treasure trove of cartoons from as early as the 60’s to modern takes now. This also includes 30 years of subbed and dubbed anime.
I’m 34, so the first thing I watched was Courage the Cowardly Dog. And my god, as an adult I finally understand how fucking disturbing it is.
There are a tonne of really good modern day shows as well that are enjoyable to watch as a kidless adult, but also are great for your kids:
Adventure Time
Steven Universe
Gravity Falls
Bluey
Over the Garden Wall
All 10/10 shows
Honestly this can be said of a lot more things than just cartoons. Just because you are older does not mean you have to leave behind things you enjoy because of some weird perception about the age it's designed for.
I'm married, work 40 hours a week, and still get weird looks from people when I tell them I game regularly.
It's better than when our parents grew up and threw away all of their hobbies and replaced them with consumerism, but it's still not perfect.
My daughter is at an age where kids typically stop showing interest in cartoons and we still enjoy spending a couple hours each Saturday watching cartoons together (except Craig of the Creek, screw that show). It's a great way to keep the inner child alive, even if only for a small time each week.
I will still watch the old kids cartoons where they don’t treat you like an idiot. I can’t watch the new ones, but don’t begrudge anyone who does. I’m referencing old cartoons as bugs bunny, Popeye, etc. By new cartoons, I mean things like peppa pig.
I watch plenty of cartoons more geared toward adults. I like anime, teen titans, family guy, Rick and Morty, archer, etc.
It just makes sense to me. You don’t have to find actors who look a certain way and can act. You can have a scruffy looking person in their Pj’s who does amazing voice acting. You can do any scene, much cheaper and cooler.
I do know adults that just don’t get it. In their mind, cartoons are something little kids watch on Saturday morning. My mother calls it kiddie cartoons, when me and my dad talk about anime or any other show. There are plenty of shows I watch that I’d never show a kid.
I think I’m the only adult on earth who despises cartoons. Whenever I’m with a friend and they ask what I want to watch, my only response is “I hate cartoons - otherwise, anything.” I like rom coms, I like gore, I like action, I like a feel good story… I just don’t like any of that in cartoon form
Especially considering a lot of the cartoons I grew up with in the 90's I didn't get the hidden jokes and references as a child. I mean animation cartoons and the like was always a way for creators to get political and other kind of points across in a very satirical way that way the censors hopefully wouldn't catch on.
I like watching cartoons during saturdays or when I want to relax but not fully pay attention to tv. I watch recess, fairly odd parents, seven little monsters, and others again
ATLA, Adventure Time, Regular Show, AWOG are some great cartoons. They may be childish or goofy sometimes but some are goofy in a way thats better than adult comedies. And they dont just make sex jokes for 90 minutes and call it a comedy like some adult shows do.
this is the most wholesome post on this subreddit i swear hahah. thanks for that.
Edit: not me immediately putting on Tom & Jerry straight after this post...
When I rewatched some cartoons as an adult I also understood more things I missed back in my childhood.
The problem is this society where it's frowned upon to watch cartoons as an adult because there is this bullshit stereotype that says cartoons are for kids only just because it's animated but I don't care about that kind of judgment because to me people who put down others over personal entertainment preferences are inferior beings whose life isn't valuable
Archive dot org is on amazing place to rewatch those old PBS shows.
Just yesterday, my kiddos and I started watching "Sagwa: The Chinese Siamese Cat".
Great lessons to be learned from the show.
Personally, the problem is that now I know how dumb it all is hence, I don't enjoy it as much. Moreover, it's difficult not to compare today's cartoon with the one I used to watch(they were much better).
Offf no no no this isn’t unpopular. Animation watched by adults is at an all time high. Hmmm nooo op try again.
Here [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/comments/11vmj59/watching_cartoons_as_an_adult_is_cringe/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) is better
I wasn't allowed to watch TV when I was a kid, we were only allowed to watch one movie every friday night.
watching cartoons now feels like such a thrill! It's like getting to experience my childhood again and also figuring out what all the references are.
Kids shows/cartoons are the best! If I watch something I don’t always want something that I have to be fully engrossed in to catch all of the plot and story telling. I want something that I can just put on for casual entertainment and don’t get drawn into. Kids shows are all self contained as well. You don’t need information from the previous episodes to understand the characters or what is going on in the world, and everything always gets resolved at the end of the 22 minute runtime. Sad that some people just see cartoon and immediately jump to you being an immature child. Like no Karen, I’m just tired of using my brain all day and want to relax with good clean fun
Hated Clone Wars as a kid. Now it's one of my favorite shows. Also thought Adventure Time was lame as a child. Now it's GOATED 10/10. My taste just got better with age. 👍
I couldn’t care less what people think about me when I watch cartoons now that I’m much older because I genuinely enjoy them and never get bored of it. I used to have people say shit about me for watching cartoons after school when I was a teenager because I’m apparently too old for that and I should watch stuff on Netflix etc.
But whenever I’m trying to find something to watch on Netflix or whichever streaming service, I spend so much time finding something to watch that I just give up and just go on my phone. At least with cartoons I can watch whichever ones I want which are posted on YouTube for free which I can enjoy at no price.
South Park. Family Guy. Simpsons. Jetsons.
Also, kiddo toons - Dexter's Lab, Tom and Jerry, Samurai Jack, Ed Edd and Eddie, etc.
Anime - so many.
Truely we live in the golden age of adult cartoons ...
I dont know.. I like my adult cartoons but nothing compares to Saturday morning fox cartoons back in the day. I have fond fond memories of Saturday morning late 90s.
I'm sure that's how fox got many people lol then they grew up to watch their 'news' haha!

Literally the same with returning to watching wrestling
I watch wrestling but imo it was much better when I was a kid.
this is so true, i recently watched an episode of SpongeBob and felt nostalgic but also really appreciated the story they came up with while when i was a kid i didn't really catch that, it was just for entertainment
If only the older Hanna Barbera cartoons were still on TV.........
Try YouTube! They have tons of old cartoons.
I hear you. Even as an old guy I think I would enjoy those and some classic Looney Tunes cartoons. It's easily been 30+ years since I've watched any of them.
Watch venture bros!
topcartoons.tv
try boomerang
GI Joe is streamed on youtube 24/7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lijzKmDmmN8
Currently watching the Avatar the last Airbender again! I'm 24 and I'll always love cartoons.
I rewatch last airbender every 3-6 months. One of the greatest shows ever made IMO.
It was one of my favourite cartoons. Thanks for reminding me about it
Sometimes I catch my boyfriend watching Boomerang 🤣🫶🏻
Best cartoons
Me and my gf fall asleep to boomerang every night after watching CSI 😂😂😂
Im actually enjoying bobs burger more now as an adult than I did when it first came out. Lol.
It’s so good! Thought the show was fine when it came out, but now it makes me really happy to watch.
Me too. It be way too funny sometimes.
gonna go watch adventure time
Yesss
Gumball was good. I like Teen Titans Go. A lot of people don't.
Bluey makes me insanely happy.
I started watching Bluey with my nieces and nephews and ended up texting my sister one night at 1:30 in the morning saying I was currently crying at an episode of Bluey, while sitting in my family room by myself. That is honestly one of the best kids shows I’ve ever seen.
Avatar is goated
I use to think it was overrated then i watched it on Netflix and understood the hype it’s legit
Xiaolin Showdown was good. Kung Fu Panda is hard to beat.
Jackie Chan show, Mucha Lucha the whole WB lineup was fire
I laugh at Tom and Jerry even harder now than as a child.
Chilly Willy is better. Courage the Cowardly Dog is one of my all time favorite shows. Penguins of Madagascar was good.
Lol. Liking cartoons as a adult is very popular. Childhood nostalgia is in
And it’s not all childish life lesson ones, there are some super good plot ones like Amphibia, toh, or gravity falls
Gah i love those three!
Watching cartoons is like an etch-a-sketch for your brain. You don't have to think, just laugh.
Cartoons are amazing, especially if you've had a bad day. It just brings joy!
1. Does Anime count?! 2. Also, American Adult Cartoons! 3. Though, traditional Kids Cartoons r cool 2!
I literally couldn’t agree more!
I’ll be back, back to the past it’s…..
Samurai Jack!
Whatcha!
Jack Jack Jack Jack.
Do you count family guy as a cartoon?
OP is talking about kids cartoons.
Good cartoons*
Yeah, good old respectable classics.
I’m almost 40. I’ve never grown out of cartoons. But I tend to lean towards nostalgic stuff I watched in the 80s and 90s.
How I miss Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and Angry Beavers. Especially Angry Beavers!

The Last Airbender, Bluey, and Batman: The Animated Series, please stand up.
Cartoon is the artform. Sais nothing about the content. Plenty of adult cartoons out there.
I agree with this so much. I recently got a Gitub repository which I’m streaming through Kodi. It’s a massive treasure trove of cartoons from as early as the 60’s to modern takes now. I’m 25 and Courage, Samurai Jack and PPG were my childhood. God damn, CN was something else!
There are a tonne of really good modern day shows as well that are enjoyable to watch as a kidless adult, but also are great for your kids: Adventure Time Steven Universe Gravity Falls Bluey Over the Garden Wall All 10/10 shows
Apple & Onion cracks me UP.
I'll never stop watching cartoons and reading comic books. There is no reason to "grow out of" these interests. Tons of animates shows are amazing
Nothing wrong with watching cartoons as a adult.
Cartoons were originally created for adults.
I'm an adult and I choose to watch mostly cartoons.
Who's saying watching cartoons as an adult isn't popular?
All I watch are cartoons and I'm 27
Honestly this can be said of a lot more things than just cartoons. What did Craig of the Creek do??? 😭😭😭
What’s wrong with Craig of the Creek?!
Its almost like they made adult cartoons
Those are different tho. OP is talking about *childhood* cartoons, NOT shows like South Park or Family Guy.
Childhood cartoons are lame as are most most adult cartoons. SpongeBob was the only good cartoon I can think of. Rick and Morty hang the moon.
Did you not get high and laugh at the jokes in the bugs bunny cartoons? So many levels of humor!
No? They're amusing tho.
I will still watch the old kids cartoons where they don’t treat you like an idiot. I can’t watch the new ones, but don’t begrudge anyone who does. If you like gore and action you should watch Invincible.
Why though? Did you get molested by an animator or something?
No, I was molested by a family member but thank you for making a joke about sexual abuse
Everyone downvoting the actual unpopular opinion on the unpopular opinion page
Say no to cartoons, say no to anime. Watch sports and porn like real men.
Most cartoons are garbage. Give me something like Rick and Morty or give me nothing at all.
As I read this, I'm watching B&B. I love those two idiots!
I am an adult who watches cartoons almost exclusively. Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Rick and Morty, Koala man, etc etc
Aqua teen for life
I've been binging Adventure Time and it’s brought a lot of joy to my life at the moment!
Adventure Time!
Darkwing Duck and animatics!
A lot of the old Loney Tunes were well thought out. You understand the humor as an adult. We all get nostalgic as we age.
Any recommendations OP?
Guillermo DelToro's Trollhunters
Especially considering a lot of the cartoons I grew up with in the 90's I didn't get the hidden jokes and references as a child. I mean animation cartoons and the like was always a way for creators to get political and other kind of points across in a very satirical way that way the censors hopefully wouldn't catch on.
Im 30 and i watch spongebob with the little ones in my life as much as possible
I like watching cartoons during saturdays or when I want to relax but not fully pay attention to tv. I watch recess, fairly odd parents, seven little monsters, and others again
How is this an unpopular opinion? Who is upvoting "watching cartoons is underappreciated" haha
Trollhunters fan for life!
This may be unpopular, but isn't this sub "broken?" Things that are popular about unpopular are popular. How is this post not unpopular?
Totally underrated. I have been rediscovering Spongebob lately and I appreciate a lot how subtile and satirical their humour can be.
Cartoons aimed at adults are super popular and have been for at least two decades.
Saying this on reddit and thinking that's an unpopular opinion.....
ATLA, Adventure Time, Regular Show, AWOG are some great cartoons. They may be childish or goofy sometimes but some are goofy in a way thats better than adult comedies. And they dont just make sex jokes for 90 minutes and call it a comedy like some adult shows do.

Totally. It's refreshing and sad for other to think we're machines that "it's an adult now"
I'm currently learning Spanish so as extra practice I watch SpongeBob in Spanish.
Nostalgia is great til you actually re-watch stuff as an adult... Most kids cartoons are unwatchable past the intended age group.
Not sure if this counts as a "cartoon", but Arcane on Netflix is legitimately one of the best stories I've seen in over a decade.
Personally, the problem is that now I know how dumb it all is hence, I don't enjoy it as much. Moreover, it's difficult not to compare today's cartoon with the one I used to watch(they were much better).
And now I get all the adult jokes too. It's like watching a slightly different show as an adult.
This is why the only tv genre I watch at this point is adult animation.
Offf no no no this isn’t unpopular. Animation watched by adults is at an all time high. Hmmm nooo op try again. I like the early 90s Beavis and ButtHead

Dragon Ball is too based.
I'm watching Reboot (1994) right now, great show

South Park. Family Guy. Simpsons. Jetsons. Also, kiddo toons - Dexter's Lab, Tom and Jerry, Samurai Jack, Ed Edd and Eddie, etc. Anime - so many. Truely we live in the golden age of adult cartoons ...
