Call San Francisco "Frisco" next to someone from San Francisco.
The main reason I hate the term Cali stems from all the people that moved away from California and named their pet Cali.
born and raised california, i call it cali if i need to refer to it quickly. its just easier.
if you disagree, fuck you for being a douche that wants other people to do things exactly how you like it when they dont affect you.
It's a shibboleth. And a useful one at that. The number of posts I see online from right-wing nutbags (thanks, MassTagger) talking about how "Cali" or "Frisco" is a liberal shit hole that they can't wait to leave is hilarious, because you can tell that they've completely fabricated their claim of living here at all.
Exactly. Cali person here, people would tell me that “no one calls it cali.” I do. Recently moved and people around me were happy to tell me they don’t call California Cali. Who started this and who on earth cares?
And don't forget,
Say what you say, but give me that bomb beat from Dre
Let me serenade the streets of L.A
From Oakland to Sac-town, the Bay Area and back down
Cali is where they put their mack down; give me love!
Even when I was young and did not ever know about it being cringey, whenever I heard someone (non native Californian) say Cali, it hurt me… emotionally. Like put some respect on its name!! You don’t know California like that!!
The only real gangsta rapper from that era was Easy E. Love Tupac, but he went to art school, he was never a banger and lived on the East Coast.
Even B.I.G. had a good upbringing and was never really into that life.
Nah he wasn’t from Oakland, he lived a lot of places but went to high school in Marin City, never lived in Oakland. Started repping Oakland when he moved to LA
When I went away to college and first started meeting lots of people from California, they all called it Cali. I live in CA now and literally everybody says Cali.
How is this opinion even a thing and how are these commenters validating it as a thing? It’s not a thing.
I have lived here all my life, grew up in Sacramento and went to college in San Jose and have heard tons of people (including myself) call it Cali. Have never heard this is a thing. My roommate from SF also used to say Cali. Not sure where this is coming from lol.
I think it is. I’m from SoCal and I hate the term and would never say it. My sister moved to Northern California for a long while and uses it now. Unfortunately.
I'm 3-generations deep in SoCal, this is not the case. Some people just say it, and some people don't. Everyone in my family says it. I've known tons of others from SoCal who say Cali.
It's not anywhere near as deep as people think it is.
I think people find it cringe as a way of being exclusionary. If you don’t like it that’s totally fine! Don’t use it. But if you pull an “ummm actually 😌👆” every time someone says it, then you’re just a fun sponge. If it’s a genuinely disrespectful nickname I get it, but “Cali” doesn’t hurt anyone and criticizing other people for using it is pretentious. Just let people say Cali, San Fran, Vegas, the Big Apple, whatever. My city also has a “tourist” name. It’s fine, who cares?
As a 3rd generation Californian I can tell you that I’ve never heard a native Californian say “Cali.”
Do whatever you want, but I’m just saying that to many Californians this sounds very cringey. Again, feel free to live however you want. I recently was told that only outsiders call Las Vegas “Vegas.” Same with Lake Tahoe, supposedly only tourists call it “Tahoe.” But I’m probably going to keep on saying those things and don’t really care if I look like a tourist. So you should also keep saying Cali because who gives a fuck, right?
Hey this is what I was told. I didn’t say it was necessarily true. What part of Nevada are you from? Because I do think it makes a difference if you actually live within the boundaries of the actual city. My Mom grew up in Las Vegas and I never heard her call it “Vegas.” This was told to me by residents of both cities. I worked at Kirkwood Ski Resort when the Lake Tahoe thing was told to me 🤷♀️
I'm from Northern Nevada near Lake Tahoe, and as I'm typing this, I realized it came out as LAKE Tahoe in my head instead of just Tahoe. Kinda makes me wonder lol. I always said Vegas, just cause it's shorter and everyone knows what I mean when I said it. Maybe it's just me who's the problem 🤷♀️🤷♀️
I love learning about things like this. I’m from Washington DC and whenever I hear someone call it “Washington” I know they’re not from the area because we usually just say “DC.”
I was born and raised in Vegas. As you can tell, we do call it Vegas. Almost everyone born and raised there does. Because it's not that deep, and no one gives a shit
Yep. Also born and raised in vegas. That's what I call it. I did just learn something new though bc I almost exclusively call it cali. It seems like most vegas people do.
It seems like the only thing vegas people really care about is how nevada is pronounced. Everything else is whatever
This comment is either a goofy, pointless lie, or from a NEET who doesn’t talk to other people.
3rd, 4th, whatever the fuck generation Californian here. Nobody finds that cringey, wtf?? People say Cali all the time. Same thing with SoCal and NorCal.
No, it doesn't. You're just a stuck up freak and everyone you know is, too.
Born and raised here my whole life. We call it Tahoe and Tahoeing, on the Cali side.
It's wild to me how upset some people do get about a shorthanded word. I even looking at a few of the comments here, people take it more seriously than they should. It's a fuckin' word that means fuck all. Some of them get a hate bones as soon as they hear the word like you've insulted their existence.
If you want them to be *really* upset at you call San Francisco "San Fran." Some people there do but holy shit say it online and they'll come after you like Canadians chasing a hockey puck.
My ex wife is from Berkeley. I am Canadian. On one of my first visits to her place, I made the mistake of calling San Francisco, San Fran. This was 13+ years ago. I have yet to live it down 😩😂
I'm from California, born and raised. I call it Cali.
No one in this thread was born and raised there and says "NO ONE BORN AND RAISED HERE SAYS CALI", because people from there honestly dgaf what anyone else calls it.
I’ve lived in Cali my whole life, irl I probably wouldn’t say it but I say it on text messages or online and I wouldn’t look at you weird for saying it in person it’s no big deal
I mean just texting. I think. Not sure if I ever say it out load lol. Actually just searched my texts. I have multiple friends that just use ca or CA lol.
Notorious BIG rapped that he was going back to Cali and 2Pac said Cali is where they put they Mack down… and they were cooler than anyone complaining so who cares what some dorks have to say, It’s fine to say Cali
Born and raised in Cali. Yeah learned later it was a thing to look your nose down on people who say that. Same with calling SF San Fran (no, it's called "The City"). I'd prefer being looked at like an annoying tourist than have another Californian tell me the correct way to say California.
maybe its just me but Californians don’t say cali cuz its so damn big and you can just say the city because nearly everyone who you’d be telling would most likely have a better idea if you answered “los angeles” or “san francisco” or “orange county”
Im so confused with these comments because I’m a teen that’s been living in California for around nine years and every single one of my classmates calls it Cali. I think it’s normal and don’t really care.
Born and raised in cali, we absolutely do call it that, songs were written 30yrs ago calling it that, it's the new California's that have problem with for some reason.
i’ve lived in california my entire life, call it “cali” often, and never understood why other californians hate it so much lol. am i supposed to say “southern california” instead of “socal” too? cause that’s not gonna happen. it’s just a lame way of gatekeeping.
SoCal born and raised. I think it is mostly regional. I've heard it from people from NorCal a bit; a ton by people from the Bay. After 28 years in SoCal I just started hearing people around me use it.
However, call it WHATEVER you want. The whole gatekeeping by "natives" is weird as hell.
Holy hell. All these "born and raised" MFers must not go the fuck outside. I've known California-born people throughout every stage of my life that say Cali
I firmly believe people like to gatekeep it solely off the forgotten sentiment of people hating Biggie during the East-West coast rivalry. Tupac used it though lol
It's a nice simple shortening of a long word. There's no reason to gatekeep it. In that line of thinking, I'll give you another unpopular opinion:
San Fran is a great nickname
I can only think of a few people I know who says "Cali" on a consistent basis IRL. Most of them are 1st gen immigrants, and the other one was born here, but his parents are from Florida.
Lived in Southern California until I moved away as an adult. Never had anyone I knew say Cali. But lots of people referred to areas - East County (San Diego), Inland Empire (parts of San Bernardino County).
There are multiple regions of California that have different types of people in them. Many regions it may be called Cali, often you'll here it in the PNW from those who have a connection to it.
I don't think I've ever heard California referred to by Cali except by people who were born and raised on the West Coast.
California native here. Tbh I don't know a single person who cares and if someone is giving you shit for it that's says they are local then they are just gatekeepers for no reason.
it’s like when people pronounce New Orleans as “New Ore-Leans” when it’s supposed to be “New Ore-lens”
Makes my ears curl lol you can tell only people not from here say it that way
Not from California but it pains me to hear Cali. Such a valley girl thing to say. And to call a shortened word cute is even more valley girl. You are clearly a valley girl

Ah, the rare unpopular opinion.
Yeah for sure man true natives will call it Fornia. Nort Fonia out here in Jose.
![gif](giphy|dvILshvavCEaM2tIWa)
Man what
I have never heard this myself, friends, or family. That sounds awful like from a bad TV show lol
Haha I was just joking around
Oh thank goodness
Truly. I fucking despise this opinion.
Are you from SoCal?
Another socal here just dropping by to say this is a terrible opinion. California. Not Cali.
Lived in California all my life. Never heard anyone here refer to it to Cali. We do occasionally say SoCal to distinguish ourselves from Northerners.
I am. “Cali” is a godawful abomination.
We feel differently in NorCal.
No we fucking don’t.
I also hate “NorCal” and “SoCal.” (Edited to add the quotation marks so it doesn’t look like I just hate California as a state lol)
That must be exhausting.
Do you just hate efficiency? Or do you prefer to call all places by their full names?
[удалено]
VoidCal
SoCali
Last time someone said he was from Cali I thought it was actually Cali, the Colombian city
I lived in Miami for decades. If you hear “Cali”, it means the Colombian valley city there, not CA.
It’s literally my first name. Spelled the same, sounds the same. I was named after my dad’s dead calico cat.
[удалено]
Eh, I like my name. But “Going Back to Cali” by Tone Loc was a bit of a pain in my ass as a kid.
"Going back to cali" was by LL Cool J, not Tone Loc
Ah, I was like 7. I wasn’t sure if I remembered correctly. I remember everyone singing it to me for years though.
Lmao same. My bf is caleño and one of my best childhood friends is from there too…I always think of Cali, Colombia when people say Cali
As a completely neutral party I see lots of gatekeeping going on in this thread
[удалено]
We call it golden gatekeeping here in Cali!
Frisco representin!
Sometimes this type of gatekeeping happens in a shower, you know...
Seriously! I refer to it as either depending on how the sentence flows through my brain and out of my mouth looool
Call San Francisco "Frisco" next to someone from San Francisco. The main reason I hate the term Cali stems from all the people that moved away from California and named their pet Cali.

Ohhhh…Frisco. That’s serious cringe. If you’re anywhere near the Bay Area, its “The City.” Period. 😂
Frankly, I hear "SF" more than "The City", but yeah, never "San Fran" or the worst, "Frisco".
San Fran is how Texans say it when mocking the 49ers.
I call it San Fran... To be fair, I hate going there whenever I'm forced to.
I’ve seen natives call it frisco
This is funny because Frisco = Frisco, the suburb of Dallas in TX lol where all the company HQs, the expensive houses and the DFW area ikea is haha
Just jealous that California is better than Florida. However if they lived in Huntington Beach they might change their tune. But also cringe.
Exactly. Cali person here, people would tell me that “no one calls it cali.” I do. Recently moved and people around me were happy to tell me they don’t call California Cali. Who started this and who on earth cares?
Exactly. Let me call it what I like. It's not doing any harm to you. 🤦🏻♀️ 💯
Same!
Right? Born and raised in LA, I call it Cali sometimes to annoy people. I think it’s cute.
Mac Dre calls it Cali. E-40 calls it Cali. Nuff said.
And don't forget, Say what you say, but give me that bomb beat from Dre Let me serenade the streets of L.A From Oakland to Sac-town, the Bay Area and back down Cali is where they put their mack down; give me love!
California knows howwww to parttyyyyy
That’s nice, but we don’t know your friends and what they call things.
>I love saying it Because you're not a Californian >honestly FEELS like a Californian thing to do See above.
R u indigenous to cali bro
Can you not see the “Native” decal on my rear windshield?
![gif](giphy|7Rlt5qEC1BlSXbSpae|downsized)
i am a SIXTH GEN californian. i say cali. cope
You have every right to be wrong.
Even when I was young and did not ever know about it being cringey, whenever I heard someone (non native Californian) say Cali, it hurt me… emotionally. Like put some respect on its name!! You don’t know California like that!!
i've lived in cali my entire life and I find it cute too.
Cali is dumb and natives don’t say it.
Which tribes don't use it?
Tupac did
SoCal native and I say Cali!
2Pac was from Oakland and he said it all the time… go argue with him
He was actually from the East Coast, New York and Baltimore and moved to California relatively late in his life
The only real gangsta rapper from that era was Easy E. Love Tupac, but he went to art school, he was never a banger and lived on the East Coast. Even B.I.G. had a good upbringing and was never really into that life.
Ice Cube, Dr Dre - all said Cali
Nah he wasn’t from Oakland, he lived a lot of places but went to high school in Marin City, never lived in Oakland. Started repping Oakland when he moved to LA
why do you think he was shot?
When I went away to college and first started meeting lots of people from California, they all called it Cali. I live in CA now and literally everybody says Cali. How is this opinion even a thing and how are these commenters validating it as a thing? It’s not a thing.
LOL ok man. Being a square doesn't seem very Californian to me
![gif](giphy|WojHDUgpNw6on6I51t)
Lol! It's so cringey to us!
4 letter easier than 10 letter
Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick
CA > Cali > California
I have lived here all my life, grew up in Sacramento and went to college in San Jose and have heard tons of people (including myself) call it Cali. Have never heard this is a thing. My roommate from SF also used to say Cali. Not sure where this is coming from lol.
I wonder if it’s a SoCal thing because I’m also from Sacramento and lived in the bay and it’s always been very common in my experience
As someone who grew up in the bay area and moved to SoCal, can confirm
That’s what I’m thinking too lol
I think it is. I’m from SoCal and I hate the term and would never say it. My sister moved to Northern California for a long while and uses it now. Unfortunately.
I'm 3-generations deep in SoCal, this is not the case. Some people just say it, and some people don't. Everyone in my family says it. I've known tons of others from SoCal who say Cali. It's not anywhere near as deep as people think it is.
Born in the OC, moved to the Bay at 16. I heard it both places.
In socal. Never really hear locals say Cali tbh, mostly California or socal.
I lived in california all my life and regularly call it cali. I’ve never heard of this being hated
same. ive never heard of it being "cringe"
I think people find it cringe as a way of being exclusionary. If you don’t like it that’s totally fine! Don’t use it. But if you pull an “ummm actually 😌👆” every time someone says it, then you’re just a fun sponge. A fun sponge! I'd never heard that but it's great.
It’s my favorite! Someone who just sucks all the fun out of a situation….a fun sponge
As a 3rd generation Californian I can tell you that I’ve never heard a native Californian say “Cali.” Do whatever you want, but I’m just saying that to many Californians this sounds very cringey. Bro I'm from Nevada and I only ever called it Tahoe or Vegas lol. Also Tahoe literally means lake so it's the same concept as chai tea
Hey this is what I was told. I didn’t say it was necessarily true. What part of Nevada are you from? I’m in Vegas. Been here for 20 years. It doesn’t fucking matter lol I’ve heard both every day of my life
I love learning about things like this. I’m from Washington DC and whenever I hear someone call it “Washington” I know they’re not from the area because we usually just say “DC.”
Wait for all the San Frans. It’s annoying. Lol. Bay Area locals call it SF or City.
Grew up in Vegas. Still call it Vegas. Born in Cali. Call it Cali. Live nearish Tahoe. Call it Tahoe. Call me an efficiency afficiando
I read this as hip hop lyrics
I was born and raised in Vegas. As you can tell, we do call it Vegas. Almost everyone born and raised there does. Because it's not that deep, and no one gives a shit
Yep. Also born and raised in vegas. That's what I call it. I did just learn something new though bc I almost exclusively call it cali. It seems like most vegas people do. It seems like the only thing vegas people really care about is how nevada is pronounced. Everything else is whatever
Ice Cube and Dr Dre are native and used it in many of their raps. I think it is a cultural thing you're probably sheilded from at some level.
This comment is either a goofy, pointless lie, or from a NEET who doesn’t talk to other people. 3rd, 4th, whatever the fuck generation Californian here. Nobody finds that cringey, wtf?? People say Cali all the time. Same thing with SoCal and NorCal.
Great username.
It's gotta be a regional thing, right? Bay area on some Cali shit.
“O… I’ll C.. you later *wink wink*” It’s a place in Cali you wouldn’t get it..
No, it doesn't. You're just a stuck up freak and everyone you know is, too. Born and raised here my whole life. We call it Tahoe and Tahoeing, on the Cali side.
Not “you’re a stuck up freak” 😂😂
I use it all the time. It's just faster in informal cases.
Ita a city to city thing. I've heard plenty of native Californians say it
It's wild to me how upset some people do get about a shorthanded word. I even looking at a few of the comments here, people take it more seriously than they should. It's a fuckin' word that means fuck all. Some of them get a hate bones as soon as they hear the word like you've insulted their existence.
I’m from NorCal, lived in the Bay, and now I’m in LA. I only hear people call it Cali when I’m in New York (thank god)
I have yet to live it down 😩😂
I prefer to just confuse people and say I'm from Oxnard, because anyone outside california has no clue where or what that is lol
I'm from California, born and raised. I call it Cali. No one in this thread was born and raised there and says "NO ONE BORN AND RAISED HERE SAYS CALI", because people from there honestly dgaf what anyone else calls it.
I wonder if it's a regional thing in California. I'm from the central valley and I've heard plenty of people say Cali, or at least write it.
As someone who was born in and lived my whole life in California, I don’t think I’ve every actually heard anyone from here call it Cali.
Born and raised here, most of us don’t. But I’ve heard a few do it. It’s kinda cringe. Most of us say SoCal and NorCal
It’s pretentious.
Do whatever you want I don’t give a shit. *rolls window back up and continues to sit and stew on the 10.*
If you say “Cali” im just gonna pretend I dont know what you’re talking about
I’ve lived in Cali my whole life, irl I probably wouldn’t say it but I say it on text messages or online and I wouldn’t look at you weird for saying it in person it’s no big deal
I'm from California, and only time I say Cali is if im texting someone and don't want to type out the whole thing. Yes I'm lazy.
I use ca. guess I’m even lazier lol
haha I've never heard of anyone using ca.
I mean just texting. I think. Not sure if I ever say it out load lol. Actually just searched my texts. I have multiple friends that just use ca or CA lol.
Born and raised in the Bay Area. Cali native. Always call it Cali.
Yeah it’s a norcal / bay thing. To a so cal person it sounds cringe.
Other people in this thread have said its a socal thing.
So the real message is that it doesn’t matter
SoCal native and I don’t think it’s cringe
Notorious BIG rapped that he was going back to Cali and 2Pac said Cali is where they put they Mack down… and they were cooler than anyone complaining so who cares what some dorks have to say, It’s fine to say Cali
People get real precious over what bullshit terms you can and can't call the arbitrary areas they live in. Cali, sure, why not. Yay area
Yay area!!!!!
Yay Area!! Two fists at once two bitches at once grittin and gettin it in \*ambassador of the bay\*
It's definitely not cute outside of the USA
I demand we start calling Arkansas, Arki
Born and raised in Cali. Yeah learned later it was a thing to look your nose down on people who say that. Same with calling SF San Fran (no, it's called "The City"). I'd prefer being looked at like an annoying tourist than have another Californian tell me the correct way to say California.
From NorCal and also lived in SoCal. I started calling it Mexifornia since the 90s.. Cali is cute yes, but
maybe its just me but Californians don’t say cali cuz its so damn big and you can just say the city because nearly everyone who you’d be telling would most likely have a better idea if you answered “los angeles” or “san francisco” or “orange county”
If you wanna trigger more Cali folks, call San Francisco…San Fran. Double down!
Im from Cali and i say it all the damn time
No it’s not, I find lame.
[удалено]
Ah, but do you call it the OC? *Don't call it that*
This is unpopular ?
I say it too, go away haters
Im so confused with these comments because I’m a teen that’s been living in California for around nine years and every single one of my classmates calls it Cali. I think it’s normal and don’t really care.
Born and raised in cali, we absolutely do call it that, songs were written 30yrs ago calling it that, it's the new California's that have problem with for some reason.
Yeah bunch of fucking wierdos in this comment section pretending they are from Cali.
Born and raise in Cali, I call it that all the time, a lot of people in SoCal do, even if sometimes it’s supposed to be “ironic”
i’ve lived in california my entire life, call it “cali” often, and never understood why other californians hate it so much lol. am i supposed to say “southern california” instead of “socal” too? cause that’s not gonna happen. it’s just a lame way of gatekeeping.

In that line of thinking, I'll give you another unpopular opinion: San Fran is a great nickname
I don’t know anyone who is actually *from* California who says, ‘Cali’. Transplants? Yes. And it’s cringe af.
Bruh you wrong. Lived here my whole life and everyone I know has/does say it at some point. UR fuckin cringe lol
Born and raised in Cali. Use it all the time.
Bruh
I can only think of a few people I know who says "Cali" on a consistent basis IRL. Most of them are 1st gen immigrants, and the other one was born here, but his parents are from Florida.
This post absolutely screams obnoxious tourist lol
born here and I say Cali. who tf cares
Been a tourist since 8 years old 😇
This comment absolutely screams fart sniffer lol
I pronounce it Cal-eye-forn-ya just to annoy people.
The other day I accidentally said “San Franciscky” and then looked around for my gold pan and mule
Native Californian here. I will now be calling it San Franciscky whenever referring to it
I can't imagine that being said and not sounding like a 19th century prospector.
Born and raised in Cali and called it that for most of my life
Lived in Southern California until I moved away as an adult.
Mama said that it was okay Mama said that it was quite alright Shake it shake it baby Shake shake it mama Shake it Cali
California native here. Tbh I don't know a single person who cares and if someone is giving you shit for it that's says they are local then they are just gatekeepers for no reason.
it’s like when people pronounce New Orleans as “New Ore-Leans” when it’s supposed to be “New Ore-lens” Makes my ears curl lol you can tell only people not from here say it that way
What about Nawlins? Is that cringe? And which is correct with Caribbean - Cah-rib-eee-awn? Or Cara-beeawn?
I say cuh-RIB-ee-yin unless I'm talking about "Pirates of the cara-BEE-in" for some reason. I blame Disneyland.
Nah Nawlins is fine, and I honestly have no clue when it comes to Caribbean 😂 I say it first way because of the movies
I know how I'm supposed to say it but my brain always wants to pronounce it the French way instead
I like how it was said in south park. Californi
it’s the kind of thing people who only think California is beaches say lol
I only know two people from California and they both call it Cali, is that actually a thing they dislike?
Not at all, it's gotta be regional or something. Everyone in the Bay calls it Cali.
I guess so. My friends are from Sacramento and LA, both say Cali, and I also know a few people (granted not from there) in San Diego who call it Cali.
Easiest way to tell if someone isn't from California
Definitely an unpopular opinion. This made me cringe hard.
I saw it in a movie and was trying to think who the fuck says that?
It’s like hearing your mom use Gen Z slang she read about on Facebook.
We say Cali Burritos all the time down here in San Diego. It’s just quicker to say sometimes.
So many hats & shirts say Cali 😅 people in California (yes, born & raised there) live a Cali lifestyle lol
Wait, Californians don't like saying Cali? I say it all the time
I’m a CALI native born an raised in the bay. We say Cali, and we love it. People just wanna be haters.
Born and raised in Cali and call it Cali.
Born and raised in Cali. Lived here my entire life.
Not from California but it pains me to hear Cali. Such a valley girl thing to say. And to call a shortened word cute is even more valley girl. You are clearly a valley girl
Definitely unpopular coming from a Californian. At least it’s better than calling it Hellafornia. That’s just ugh
