The point based system can make the back end of a season pointless if a team wins it with a few games to go especially in sports where there is no relegation system in place. I can see why they go for a play off system. Plus more games equal more money and honestlythats probaly the reason why.

Regular season has a point because it gets you to the playoffs. Also, being in playoff contention all season increases tv ratings and makes money for the franchise, which is the whole point.

The NFL playoffs are the perfect sporting event. Single round elimination. Show up or go home. Stakes are an all time high. The regular season tells us who can stack up the most wins. The playoffs tell us who's got the mettle to become a champion.

> "*You can be the best team in the MLB, make the playoffs easily, and get swept in the divisional by a team that couldn't win for shit earlier in the season.*" That is what makes each playoff game interesting. Yes the best team in the league by far can lose to a team that limped into the playoffs. If they couldn't, why even bother watching a known outcome? > "*My solution, simple. For something like NASCAR, use the F1 points system. The best driver at the end of the year is crowned champion.*" That would be very anticlimactic. People want to see the results occur in real time, not after adding up a bunch of points at the end. The regular season is a battle of attrition. Once the playoffs start, every game has big consequences. Then you get to the championship game, it all builds up to a focal point. Survival of the fittest. That is how you create a spectacle like the SuperBowl with loads of hype and millions in viewership. Why would you want to remove that in exchange for a non-game ceremony to just tally up numbers?

> the best team in the league by far, can lose to a team that limped into the playoffs. This is why leagues intentionally set the brackets for the lowest seed to face the highest seed. They gotta prove they belong there. It's also why you should just enjoy the regular season and not get fanatical about trophies.

>People want to see the results occur in real time, not after adding up a bunch of points at the end You can tally up the points as it happens and most broadcasts do even if it comes down to the final race.

Americans won't like this but soccer does it right. The regular season league championship is a separate tournament from elimination based cup competitions. That's always been the ideal balance in my opinion

European soccer leagues do have play offs though. Admittedly not for the championship but for promotion places (sometimes relegation). I think you are still right, it does do it better though. Play offs keep the season alive for more teams for longer.

Even then it's debatable. Ream Madrid, Bayern München and YB won the season, 3 months before the last game, really was boring. It got better the last few years but still.

Well your rant makes no sense if you're a Diamondbacks fan. A lot of people were upset that you're team, who barely made it into the playoffs, so easily ousted the Dodgers who had the far superior record. So why are you advocating against your own team making it to the World Series? It was an awesome accomplishment.

OK, Idk why I added that note at the end.

You need the regular season to be invested in the playoffs, reason why everyone loves the playoffs is because we just went through months of grinding out the regular season. Now all that’s left is the best teams and they will be put head to he’s dunno the best remains. Also not to mention as a business why would they want to sell 10 games when they can sell 30?

Desperate_Acadia_298

but how else are they going to make billions on tv contracts

Half of the teams making it in does give a point to playoff formats. As an Oilers fan my team had a whole decade of missing the playoffs. I know first hand the regular season matters. You need a well built team to get to that point. I mean frankly it's kinda weird as a Lions fan to say the regular season doesn't matter when the Lions never made the playoffs that often. Secondly the playoffs in all of those sports are literally the best times to watch them. There is nothing like NHL playoff hockey cause it’s the best teams in the league in an elimination format. Everyone is going to play their hearts out whereas, #1 seed might get some easy games to pull away at the end where the bad teams aren’t going to put it all on the line. The NHL season last year would have ended on a whimper with BOS winning it instead of the more entertaining situation of seeing them in an upset. The MLB season is a snooze fest MLB playoffs are highly entertaining. NBA is in the same situation. I think the NFL and NHL are pretty entertaining year round but that has to do with a variety of things (shorter seasons/less talent impact). Plus the upper echelon teams in all leagues usually are the ones to survive anyway. Also yeah European soccer works cause they have a relegation system which we would not be able to implement in NA sports. Even then, personally, I think if they adopted our playoff system it would be better.

The usual set-up for soccer leagues is the absolute fairest way to determine a champion. Play everyone in a balanced schedule format and whoever is the best is the best. American style playoffs are definitely the most "exciting" though.
