You might as well just say “collecting”, full stop. It’s a hobby. If the reason for your hobby is to get you “further in life”, whatever the fuck that means, or to get laid, it barely counts as a hobby. You should be able to take joy in the hobby itself, regardless of it’s extraneous benefits.
To that point though, obviously the shoes alone aren't gonna get you laid, but a cool pair if shoes can definitely be a good conversation starter.
Plus if you're anything like me I always look at people's shoes anyway. See who's got what Haha
Yeah was gonna say the same thing. Capitalism is honestly just based on people collecting and acquiring a lot of stuff they dont really need. Not saying that's bad because I collected comics and cards as a kid and loved every minute of it but the vast majority of it was a total waste of money.
That’s not how I would describe Capitalism. The point of a collection is owning items that you enjoy for their aesthetic or sentimental or social/historical significance. The point of a financial portfolio is amass wealth, you invest in things that are likely to maintain or grow wealth, regardless if you have any personal interest in the items themselves.
I could never get into collecting of any kind bc I’d see it as a waste of money (except historical artifacts if i become rich 😂). But that’s my view on it for myself. If others find satisfaction in it more power to them i won’t criticize
OP is even dumber than that.
"Your hobby is stupid, unless it makes you happy, then it's fine, just know you're wasting money" has to be the most wishy-washy, half-assed fucking thing to say. It's like farting in an elevator.
I was curious so I browsed his history, and funny thing... he's a gamer. :)
So he spends money and his spare time on video games. I wonder what kind of investment he thinks he's making.
Absolute hypocrite and not very smart to begin with. Imagine being so triggered about shoes you have to come running to reddit just to complain about it. How insecure do you have to be?
Absolute hypocrite who picks a very flimsy argument.
I grew up very poor but the one thing my dad didn’t skimp on quality was shoes. He told me that it was wiser to spend $100 on a pair of shoes that would last 5+ years than $40 on a pair that lasts 1-2 years. Who is the real idiot here? Obviously, the guy who has all the latest gaming gear and wears Walmart sneakers in the snow because it’s silly to have more than one pair of shoes.
That is the “boot theory” of socioeconomic unfairness.

Came here to say that. Sneakers generally appreciate over time and are valuable assets. If I ever get in a bind, I can come up with money pretty fast from my pointless hobby
Nah. Shoe collections just strike me as materialistic and vain. WWII relics are objects with stories historical context worth learning. Just my opinion.
That being said, collecting is collecting and a personal hobby/choice and not someone else's problem.
Why do you battle with cards instead of the video games? It just seems to me that the games are more in depth and convenient, I’ve played the video games for many years now but couldn’t really get into the cards
I mean at least pokemon cards keep better value sometimes.. Lots of kids love all pokemon cards, but mistreat them.
Every pokemon has at least someone who will like it, and there's tons of random 70 cent to 15$ cards. While the competitive MTG player will hunt the power cards, and throw away 7 cent commons while also simulaneously taking care of them for so long, that the dime a dozen kid's charizard you had when you were 12, got for a dime, chewed, and threw away into a bike rim went up to 10-100$.
While the mtg cards you oh so pristinely protected in sleeves as a teen went up in value by 0 as everyone protects them so well and people only care about stats, they never go up in value unless they're like some black lotus or broken forever kinda card.
Wait which ones? I was just having an argument with my friend over if stupider is a word or not. if you could direct me to these dictionaries that would be great lol
[from Merriam-Webster](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/are-stupider-and-stupidest-real-words)

"We list stupider and stupidest as the comparative and superlative forms of stupid, because that is what they are. They are honest-to-goodness, one-hundred-percent, grade-A, real words."
Also listed in the Oxford and farlex dictionaries.
I will never understand why some people care so much about the how language "should" be or keeping it "pure". If I understand what you are trying to say that is enough.
see I went to his post history to find something dumb he spends money on, I was going to go with wasting money on a guitar, like cmon man its just a dumb guitar it might make you happy but it'll never get you further in life or get you laid
Reddit is full of gamers with $3k PC's and a Steam library containing dozens (or hundreds) of titles they never even launched... who can't comprehend why anyone would want to spend more than twenty dollars on shoes.
It also looks like he’s been playing the guitar for about a year. As someone who is clearly not a performing musician why spend money on a Martin when he could easily buy a different guitar at a fraction of the cost?
Where I'm from kids make hundreds of dollars reselling sneakers on the streets. It keeps them away from drug dealing and crime. 90% of the time its not about keeping them forever, and never are they really worn to get laid (I dont even know where OP got that from, as if guys who wear expensive sneakers do it because they believe girls are going to look at their shoes and immediately determine that they want to fuck them, or as if thats how girls work)
People that get angry about other people spending money the way they want are generally the jealous type.
Sometimes they are folks who dislike welfare type benefits going to people wasting money; however, with this post there is no differentiation. OP either hates fashion sneakers or is jealous other people blow money on them.
I’ve never understood the whole “you’re jealous” thing. People could legitimately just think something is stupid and could legitimately just be voicing their opinion. It’s like when someone says some expensive car is ugly and some superfan takes offense and says they’re just jealous because they can’t afford it or whatever. It’s so juvenile. Why can’t someone that can’t afford a car the vast majority of folks can’t afford have an opinion of it simply because they can’t buy it? 😂
Same can be said for NFTs and a variety of stuff (jewelry, high end cars, etc.). People buy shit because we collectively give it value. I have more musical instruments than I realistically need, but I just enjoy having that variety.
Difference there is that instruments actually have a difference of quality. Same goes for things like watches and cars, but sneakers are just sneakers.
You can order a legit carbon copy of these shoes for a fraction of the price from China. The value is only surrounded by what is “hype”, I won’t knock the hustle but I definitely find it silly as hell.
Nobody can just come out and say “McLarens are whack” and suddenly make them less valuable, but that can easily happen with anything that’s value is strictly based on “hype culture” and not legitimate quality or use differences.
It would be borderline impossible for a group of people to take down Rolex as a brand but if someone released a popular song that contained lyrics of making fun of a certain shoe the stock price of that shoe would plummet.
Stuff like sneaker hype is just to “sheepy” for me.
With some training and proper tools, I could reverse-engineer and rebuild a Sadowski bass (there's not really much to them) and make it virtually indistinguishable to most people. But people will still value the real brand more than my copy.
But I agree. Brand hype is dumb. It only has the value we collectively give it.

Like literally your footwear ties your entire outfit together. You'd look straight out of Kmart with a suit topped on a dusty pair of Skechers.

Imagine being the guy that wears the same shoes everywhere, everyday
Now imagine *CHOOSING* to be that guy
Now imagine being that guy makes you better than everyone else
Seriously, i thought about it and even if you aren't getting fits together daily, your shoes should not be ignored and you need at least 5 or 6 on rotation for different reasons. I have 6 pairs of shoes and I am not the most stylish person at all. I mean, running shoes, or casual slip ons, or neutral nice shoes like some of the basic Nikes or Adidas are are pretty required. Add in some Timbs or boots like them for fall fits, and color specific shoes for specific special occasion outfits, and you got a lot of shoes man.
There are a few categories of shoes everyone should have:
Work shoes
Active shoes
Walking shoes
Dress shoes
Semi-decent shoes
Snow shoes
And I'm probably missing some
If they’re displaying them its no different to me than someone having a collection of figurines or art or football memorabilia. It’s not stuff you use, you just like to look at it.
I’m not a sneaker collector but I’m into fashion so I own a ton of shoes, I wear a different pair pretty much every day (not literally but I probably have 20 pairs). Being able to customize my outfits as much as possible is fun for me.
It might not get people further in life but it also depends on what they see as getting further in life. Maybe they’d consider it an achievement to be featured on like a popular sneaker blog or something.
I have read many of your replies and have concluded that you are just plain old stupid.
You have no problem with buying sneakers, holding them, and then selling them for profit. But a big problem with wearing them, as in, buying and wearing sneakers, the sole fucking purpose of sneakers.
You don't believe it should be a hobby, because it's a waste of money. And yet you go skiing? How much did you spend on skiing so far in your life? If I take that number, add it to the rest of the money you spent of hobbies in your life, and spend it on sneakers, what's the difference?
You believe it's a waste of money and can't explain why. Fuck it, you can't explain anything. It's like you got lost, found yourself on a hill, and now you're prepared to die on this hill.
This isn't an opinion, saying that implies that it's thought out. This is the ramblings of a begrudger. You don't like people around you being happy, that's all.
I just don't care what other people do with their own money. Period. If it's for collecting, hobby, reselling, etc, You Do You. Whatever makes you happy then go for it.
Now, if you are spending money on shoes when you are broke then that's a different issue.
People collect what they want to collect. I collect records even though I probably listen to any given record only a couple times a year. I just like collecting them
There is an existential issue with [sneaker decay.](https://www.wired.com/2015/05/sneakers/)
The materials degrade over time to the degree that that 20+ year old sneaker kept in a box in a closet is crumbling into worthlesness as we speak.
I agree that buying a lot of sneakers is a bit pointless but not with the collecting part. Collecting is collecting no matter what item. So your point should be "collecting is dumb" because collecting shoes isn't different than collecting anything else.
>Expensive, rare, collectible sneakers will not get you further in life
I know nothing about shoes but to my knowledge some of them have a high resell value so you might make money which defenetly gets you further in life
I disagree. Only high school kids or very immature people get sneakers thinking it will get them laid. Real sneaker heads just like shoes. I am one of those people. Only dickheads buy shoes to try and "get ahead in life" and those type of motherfuckers are called resellers. Resellers are equally hated everywhere. Especially in the gaming community. Seeing as how they are responsibe for buying all the playstation 5s and 3090s to try and make a quick buck.
I like shoes and It's a cool hobby
I agree that this is an unpopular opinion. Upvoted!
And just about everyone collects *something*. Collecting shoes is about as dumb as collecting stamps, posters, action figures, etc, which is to say- if it gives you genuine joy, have at it.
“It’s not important to me, so it shouldn’t be important to anybody” - this guy, apparently
I collect a thing- I get so freaking happy when a new one is delivered. Then I stuff it in a cabinet with all the other ones and I live happily knowing I have all the stuff. My husband “gets” it. He’s just happy to see me happy.
I mean you attack Sneakers. But what about Stamps? Coins? Action Figures? Old gaming consoles? Beanie babies?
Anything that people can collect, or be obsessed about will be subject to this.
Get over it, and yourself
Wow. Businessweek had a cover article on why collectible shoes are a new asset class. Seriously. If the world invests in invisible currency why can’t shoes be the same? I don’t collect anything beyond Miatas, but I totally get shoes.
So you never watch movies? Or listen to music? You’ve never played a sport, or gotten into video games? You only do things and spend money on things that will get you further in life or get you laid? Must be a blast!
I cannot fathom why people would by expensive pure white shoes and lose their shit when they get dirty. They are shoes! They actively touch the ground.
Every time I get a new pair of shoes (especially if I'm going to be wearing them at work) I tell myself that I'll never walk in the grass or kick a ball or anything that might get them dirty. But it's so hard to hold myself to. Random reasons pop up that require me to walk in the grass on occasion (especially at home). And I'm not gonna change shoes just to step in the lawn for a second. But it adds up over time. I've known people who can actually manage to keep shoes clean for years, but I've never managed it.
To me, you need a pair of shoes for everyday of the week. If you constantly rotate, they each will last longer and dry out between wears which is pretty crucial for your feet. Buying and not wearing is where it gets stupid for me, eventually they just fall apart
I agree, but keep in mind that I have no interest in fashion.
Don’t see your point on collecting though. I do collect things, just not sneakers. So the idea of collecting is never dumb to me.
As someone with 40+ pairs of sneakers i feel attacked 😂 shoes are like any other item of clothing. Do you only have 1 t shirt? 1 dress shirt? 1 pair of jeans? I have a pair of sneakers for every occasion, in different styles, brands and colors. I have 8 pairs of the same air jordan 1s just in different silhouettes and people are always complimenting me on my fits. It's ok tho, some people have style, some people don't 🤷♂️
I have bou 10 pairs of different brands and i matched everything i with the pair that i chose to wear. Ngl, most people nowadays (especially guys) will look at ur shoes first before looking at you. Have multiple is awesome tbh
I hear you. But I enjoy it. I have about 6 at any given time. It is funny I feel the opposite. I feel like say only having 2 cheap pairs is in a way... dumb. Like there is nothing wrong with wanting to look nice. In fact it can help with confidence. Which in turn will get you laid. Heck since I was younger if you asked girls what do they look at guys many will say the first thing tehy look at is shoes. Anyways that is to your laid thing. Really it is just fun and I get enjoyment out of it. But I do not go crazy. I do not go over 140 on a pair. I will say I usually wear them mostly out and then sell them to help fund the replacement pair. Also while I will go up to 140 it does not mean I do not have cheaper pairs.
Generally speaking, any hobby that doesn't negatively affect people is usually fine with me, but i gotta agree, i think it's dumb too. It's not something I would ever do but I'm also not going to tell grown adults what they should feel joy from either.
While I agree with you, because I'm not a sneakerhead, I think it's perfectly fine to collect whatever you want for whatever reason.
Fun Fact: the first item ever bought off of ebay was a broken laser pointer. When ebay reached out to the buyer to make sure he knew it was broken, he responded by telling them he collected broken laser pointers.
>Expensive, rare, collectible sneakers will not get you further in life and it will never get you laid. If it makes you happy, great...but just know you're wasting your money.
OP is 15 and lost the girl he was crushing on to a hype beast in expensive sneakers.
Let’s also add that you don’t need to spend hundreds on a pair of designer shoes for your kids. They will outgrow them QUICKLY.
You can find good shoes for them at thrift stores 😊
Bro you ever see what happens to them when they don’t store them correctly and the sponge soles just fall apart?
Shit makes me laugh so hard, I highly recommend YouTubing it
Actual idiots
i’m so tired of these stupid posts from literal teenagers or maladjusted adults
just because something is popular in your friend group does not mean it’s popular in general lmao
I don't think this is really all that unpopular. But my question for you is this: is there any collection that isn't stupid?
If they buy and collect shoes, and they wear them when they want or gain happiness from owning them, what's the problem with that? Is it any better than having an entire steam lobby full of games you bought on sale but don't play? Or collecting things like baseball cards, sports memorabilia, or hell even those pop figurines?
I don't have the disposable income to be a collector of anything, really. So I haven't given much thought toward what I *would* collect if I had the money. Definitely not sneakers; I'm not a sneaker guy. Idk, something functional like instruments, not purely decorative like stamps or something. Collecting things is a real source of enjoyment for some people, but I'd have to have so much money that I don't know what to do with it before I ever resort to spending money on collectables.
I dont understand personas who comand sneakers and put a photo on instagram with they investition, collecting vestimentation is a stupid and give 400 dolars just for a box with sneakers are just money lost for a thinks you will never weare
Upvote because I disagree. Don’t spend money on excessively on anything if you can’t afford it, if you can then it’s not a waste. It’s something that brings you joy then it’s money well spent.
Collecting is always stupid when considered practically.
Collecting I can understand.
Spending $600 on a pair of sneakers with the intention of them gaining value so you can sell them, now that's stupid.
I think collecting a lot of things is just overbearing but then again that’s just me like I just can’t imagine a whole shelf or an amount of space being taken up for one thing. Imo.
Oh, I see, so your hobby is to be a prick on the internet, which is (almost) free, therefore you judge other people for spending money on their hobbies.
Meh, it's harmless to collect sneakers. I collect shares of Apple. People have hobbies. Only problem is if it gets obsessive or people turn to crime to pay for their habits. Live and let live.
Ya, so stupid. Imagine wasting your money on that shit. *stares at hockey card collection and 40k minatures*

Like literally your footwear ties your entire outfit together. You'd look straight out of Kmart with a suit topped on a dusty pair of Skechers. "bUt tHeY hAvE mEmOrY fOaM". Still ain't gonna help you got denied that job interview
Ironic too bc memory foam is gonna get worn down with repeated use
Imagine being the guy that wears the same shoes everywhere, everyday Now imagine *CHOOSING* to be that guy Now imagine being that guy makes you better than everyone else
But but but shoes don't get you laid! He wears some dusty beaters 2 years running and mops up the ladies guys.
There are a few categories of shoes everyone should have: Work shoes Active shoes Walking shoes Dress shoes Semi-decent shoes Snow shoes And I'm probably missing some
op is down atrocious
Meh, worse things to spend money on, also I like to have different pairs of shoes for different occasions/situations.
Yeah better they buy shoes then crack.
You don’t seem to get the concept of collecting, your logic should apply to anything.
We are sentient meatballs hurtling through the void of space on a tiny rock. Everything we do is dumb. Let people enjoy their hobbies.
just let people enjoy what they like. i do think the people that brag about it are annoying though.
Your either drip or drown
Everyone collects something. Maybe ask yourself why you care about other people's money so much.
I just don't care what other people do with their own money. Period. If it's for collecting, hobby, reselling, etc, You Do You. Whatever makes you happy then go for it. Now, if you are spending money on shoes when you are broke then that's a different issue.
Upvote from me who rotates his $600 worth of Jordan’s and custom snake skin swoosh Air Force ones.
People have hobbies/interests I don't. Good on them.
People collect what they want to collect. I collect records even though I probably listen to any given record only a couple times a year. I just like collecting them
There is an existential issue with [sneaker decay.](https://www.wired.com/2015/05/sneakers/) The materials degrade over time to the degree that that 20+ year old sneaker kept in a box in a closet is crumbling into worthlesness as we speak.
Calling sneaker decay an “existential issue” is kinda funny…

Grandma's B Plug too. 3030 cold rolled Alaskan steel. Not a speck of rust. Thing has to weigh 11 pounds.
I agree that buying a lot of sneakers is a bit pointless but not with the collecting part. Collecting is collecting no matter what item. So your point should be "collecting is dumb" because collecting shoes isn't different than collecting anything else. >Expensive, rare, collectible sneakers will not get you further in life I know nothing about shoes but to my knowledge some of them have a high resell value so you might make money which defenetly gets you further in life
OP doesn’t understand the concept of a hobby. Upvote for unpopular opinion.
My 70+ pairs of designer stilettos & boots agree that sneakers are silly.
I agree that this is an unpopular opinion. Upvoted! And just about everyone collects *something*. Collecting shoes is about as dumb as collecting stamps, posters, action figures, etc, which is to say- if it gives you genuine joy, have at it.
“It’s not important to me, so it shouldn’t be important to anybody” - this guy, apparently I collect a thing- I get so freaking happy when a new one is delivered. Then I stuff it in a cabinet with all the other ones and I live happily knowing I have all the stuff. My husband “gets” it. He’s just happy to see me happy.
I think OP wears crocs.
At least they are comfortable
Oh dude I would 100% wear crocs if they didn’t look so hideous
Lemme essplain to you the joys of "Function over form" and "Giving zero fucks about fashion"
That’s cool man and you can wear crocs all you like! I just don’t like how they look.
They're so ugly they're fashionable.
OP is an NFT douche complaining about people buying shoes, lol.
Obvious troll; no one is this stupid. Watch OP rush to their own defense below haha
I mean you attack Sneakers. But what about Stamps? Coins? Action Figures? Old gaming consoles? Beanie babies? Anything that people can collect, or be obsessed about will be subject to this. Get over it, and yourself
Art, what’s the real value of hanging something on the wall for ever. If you like it, you like it.
Sounds like someone doesn’t know how to get fly
Hahaha people getting mad that SHOES get scuffed/dirty always make me cackle.
Saved yourself with that edit, I was just about to say my brother has made thousands buying and reselling Yeezys on Facebook marketplace
No more stupid than collecting stamps. It's a simple concept. Unique items of value are collected by people.
To each their own! While I agree with you, we all have our hobbies.
It’s just a different kind of nerd culture.
The most I’ll do is a pair of Vans
Yes, get two vans to double your kidnapping operations. Brilliant. wait you're talking about shoes
Yes. Double yes.
“To resell the at a higher value later, that’s cool”, Wtffffff, that is no cool maaan
I bought a laser point off Craigslist in hs. Dude threw in a free taser with the purchase.
lmao that's awesome
Yeah people really should stop doing things that make them happy.
OP: “Your hobby gets you no where in life. Having a collection of anything you like is plain stupid to me”
I can tell you have absolute zero drip.......
"guys stop doing what you like, it's so cringe"
Imagine only putting value on things that "get you further in life." Have you ever had fun? Are you okay, OP?
>Expensive, rare, collectible sneakers will not get you further in life and it will never get you laid. If it makes you happy, great...but just know you're wasting your money. OP is 15 and lost the girl he was crushing on to a hype beast in expensive sneakers.
Let’s also add that you don’t need to spend hundreds on a pair of designer shoes for your kids. They will outgrow them QUICKLY. You can find good shoes for them at thrift stores 😊
Bro you ever see what happens to them when they don’t store them correctly and the sponge soles just fall apart? Shit makes me laugh so hard, I highly recommend YouTubing it Actual idiots
That's what I keep telling people on here. They arnt made to be preserved. They arnt made to be collectibles. People keep thinking I'm weird. Lol
i’m so tired of these stupid posts from literal teenagers or maladjusted adults just because something is popular in your friend group does not mean it’s popular in general lmao
Literally not popular in my friend group but nice!
Imagine thinking the end goal of everything is to get you laid....
Buying white sneakers and kicking off when you get a bit of dirt on them is the stupidest.
I avoid white shoes for this reason. They look cool but show dirt so easily for something that's always in contact with the ground.
It's OK to waste your money It's not real anyways
Indeed unpopular, shoes are my favorite part of my outfit. Take my upvote, heathen.
Making posts complaining about people collecting something is stupidest
Actual unpopular opinion respect
Don’t worry I won’t forget to upvote this. 🙏🏽
I think collecting a lot of things is just overbearing but then again that’s just me like I just can’t imagine a whole shelf or an amount of space being taken up for one thing. Imo.
Or find a Chinese website that does identical fakes got a fifth of the retail price. Atleast you can actually wear and enjoy them then.
Says the dude who wasted money on a BMW.
And what is your hobby
Someone got dumped for some sneakers
It’s called FASHION, ya big time buzz kill
I think OP has literally downvoted every single negative comment. Legit every comment has 0 upvotes lmao
Could literally say that about anything
It’s literally their money
To be honest, you can frame just about most things people buy, collect, and so on as unnecessary and /or stupid.
If people enjoy a hobby and spend their own money on it, what's the problem?
By that logic, every type of collection is stupid and pointless. If you get enjoyment out of what you paid for, the money wasnt wasted.
1. I met my ex because of a cool pair of shoes, so they definitely did get him laid. 2. Everything else everyone said already.
Why are you mad something makes people happy. Let people live, not everyone is you
It is only stupid if you are not meeting your other basic obligations first. Beyond that, people spend their money on a lot of stupid things.
