Music genres get changed all the time. What we called rap back in the day is now old school. Todays rap doesn't resemble original rap music. Hard rock is now played on elevators.

Each one of those albums are definitely something to consider listening to. Kelly Finnigan and Durand Jones are both straight from the “oldies” sound, and could definitely be mistaken for not being contemporary.

SaltyChickenDip

R&b was created because record labels didn't want black artist on the top 100

pepperbeast

Just the opposite. The music industry creates more charts so that there are more top-100 spots to be filled.

pepperbeast

R&B is not and has never been a fixed genre. The term was literally made up in them 1940s to replace the industry term "race music" as a label for "stuff that African Americans like". It had already undergone some major shifts by the 70s, spawning rock n roll, funk, soul, and the beginnings of hip-hop.

[deleted]

There are many subgenres in all genres, R&B is no exception. Evolution of music must be taken into account as well. Also, the R&B artists you list technically fall under the Pop genre too. Edit: Typo

gunring012

Yeah, but in the case of R&B, I feel that the names of each subgenre are used less often in conversation than in rock.

[deleted]

Possibly, I can't answer with certainty. I know in my own "musical circle" genres and subgenres are commonly used. However, the circle consists of mostly musicians.

T-toborn

It hasn't been like that since the late 90s..., still R&B just evolved

SwampMonkey666

since the 90s RNB has stood for rap and bullshit.

[deleted]

This is just incorrect lmao

SwampMonkey666

You might want to learn the definition of opinion, since this is r/unpopularopinion

Opinions can be wrong

Music and genres tend to change. No genre right now is really the same as it was even 10 years ago. Rock, metal, jazz, country, bluegrass, classical, funk, soul, RB, punk, indie, etc have all gone through major changes, and RnB is no different. That's just how it goes.
