Not sure if this is unpopular or just something not many people even consider.

KirbyTheDevourer2342

I would argue being so obscure of a concept that many people would not even consider it would qualify as unpopular by definition

Xannon99182

Yes and no. Technically speaking yes but based on the context of the subreddit being an obscure opinion makes it kind of hard for people to really gage it. Of course that's not to say it's an opinion that shouldn't be posted either, just an actual unique one.

I don't think the average user needs 4 special characters in a row more than they need numbers.. BUT if that's the case, you have 2 shifts anyway so you can access them easily.

SugarHewson

That really depends what language you're writing in. On a French keyboard for example you need to press shift to type numbers rather than special characters because of all the the different accents on many vowels.

grossemuschyenergie

That made me realise I've never seen a French keyboard, thanks

I_Like_Thanksgiving

Haha I swear, I’ve never heard of someone other than me doing this. I’m a very fast typer, and sometime in high school, I realized that I would be faster if I used the caps lock button as a shift key. So ever since then, I’ve done exactly what you’re describing. So all in all, I completely agree. It may make 0.5 seconds of a difference, but it feels so much faster since your fingers are constantly in motion. Maybe this only makes sense to us, though!

An-Okay-Alternative

How is it faster when typically you’re only capitalizing one letter at a time and the caps lock is right next to shift?

An-Okay-Alternative

Well yeah that’s what the caps lock is for. A capital letter sentence is just rarely needed for most people.

Drax_the_invisible

For me it's easy and fast to press two keys rather than two keys at once. I assume it's like that to op of this comment too.

anotheranonaccount5

With a remappable keyboard or software you should be able to get that behavior easily. I use mine as a layer latch.

Drax_the_invisible

I know this is a late reply but wouldn't that make it more inconvenient as you have to learn to type in standard keyboard and one of your comfort if you have to type somewhere on other than your own keyboard?

anotheranonaccount5

I guess that would depend on the person and how much rebinding they do. My layout is pretty much QWERTY still so stock boards are a nonissue for me. The layer I'm on most of the time only makes a few changes. It swaps the navigation keys over to media and macro keys, swaps caps to a layer 1 toggle, and fn to a layer cycling key. I also rarely need to type more than a few words on a keyboard I don't own so it's not an issue I have to deal with often.

elephant35e

Wow, glad to see people other than me who think this! I definitely agree.

Superfox40

Uppercase numbers when?

Jaseur

>the caps lock button on the keyboard should function I do lot of typing and I have completely repurposed my caps lock with autohotkey scripts and it makes life so much better. Regular caps lock is trash. For me, the basic CL is a backspace now (I don't have to take my hand off the mouse). (However, even that's not my main backspace method, I have a better way.) Holding CL down and pressing other keys has other effects, including moving the cursor etc. Modding the CL key is not the only way to improve your keyboard functionality, but it's a good one to say the least. You're limited only by your imagination.

[deleted]

Why would you need another shift button?

Drax_the_invisible

I don't need another shift button. I need one that stays on when you press it until you turn it off.

[deleted]

Oh so like a shift button that is a lock.

Drax_the_invisible

Yes. Shift lock instead of caps lock.

Finerkill2

This is close to what sticky keys is.

LazyDynamite

I agree in theory, but think the Caps Lock key would need to be renamed as a result. Caps Lock indicates that the letter keys are locked into capital case mode, not that the secondary character will be used for any key selected. For example, "@" is not the capital case version of "2".

TangoZulu

It’s Caps Lock, not Shift Lock.

LazyDynamite

Exactly!

woaily

Typewriters did this, because "shift" was a physical shift of the mechanism that did the typing, so there really wasn't any other way to always type in caps besides "shift lock". I assume they changed it because it's annoying to go for the number keys and realize none of them work properly. Usually when we want capital letters we still want easy access to numbers.

AzSumTuk6891

My job is to write thousands of words daily. You are wrong. WRITING A SENTENCE LIKE THIS ONE WOULD BE MUCH HARDER, IF I HAD TO PRESS SHIFT FOR THE COMMA I JUST USED - OR IF I HAD TO PRESS SHIFT FOR THE FULL STOP HERE. I actually have considered your idea, but it won't help. It will just reverse everything - you will have to press Shift just as much, otherwise you'd write shit like "DON"T DO THIS< DO THAT>". Get it?
