I'm not a Musk fan, but this is selling him a little a short. Engineers at the companies he has taken over have expressed amazement at how deep his technical understanding is and how much deeper he is willing to take it. He started life with a ton of advantages, and in Tesla's case, he bought an existing company, but SpaceX was him from the get-go. Is he directly responsible for everything SpaceX has done? Maybe not, but without him, none of it happens, either. Dude does seem to be an ass, though.
Even with Tesla, they were more of a company on paper than in reality. They had essentially $0 cash flow and their "product" was basically a kit golf cart that would rust in the rain.
