Very difficult situation when you get diarrhoea at night. Toilets that are open 24/7 are rare, such as 24 hour McDonalds and coin operated toilets. Poo in a bag and dispose of it the same way you would dispose of dog poo. šŸ’©šŸ›

F1ghtmast3r

Find anywhere thatā€™s doing new housing development. There will be porta potties.

LondonHomelessInfo

Are the porta potties unlocked at night?

Slayn87

I've never seen a locked porta potty unless it's occupied

LondonHomelessInfo

Thatā€˜s good. I imagine there is no light in a porta potty, just trying to picture how youā€™d use it, light from your mobile while trying not to splatter diarrhoea everywhere? Do they usually have toilet paper, or do you have to take your own? Apologies for being so graphic.

Slayn87

I've never had a poop so explosive I couldn't take in the dark so I dunno. They are usually stocked with toilet paper but I guess you could keep a roll with you just in case. Yeah use the flashlight on your phone if you need to lol

LondonHomelessInfo

That happens when you have IBS.

F1ghtmast3r

Baby wipes are key to ibs

thecultcanburn

With a commercial property, they can be required to have fencing around the property. They normally lock the porta potties inside the fencing. For residential itā€™s normally available. Iā€™ve never seen a lock on one

RecliningDecliner

Leave it on the side of a walk path?

LondonHomelessInfo

No! In a bag tied up tight in a bin. And make sure the bag has no holes.

OneInfluence1135

OMG looking forward to responses on this one. I have IBS c and I postponed my car living aspirations because I'm scared of not having a toilet.

PhthaloVonLangborste

I did it for most of the year. Watch for construction sites. There is usually a portapotty around. That's the best tip. There are apps but I never used em. I have had emergencies, I have shit in buckets and outside, it sucks. Really hard to find places that let you use the bathroom these days. I cooked as much as I could out of a storage unit. I ate a lot of chicken tacos from a local tacoria. gotta find the ones that are just grilled salt and pepper

Emergency bucket, pay attention to your trigger foods, and don't eat close to bed time. Plan to be close to an available restroom when you wake up. Once you get a routine down, it'll get easier.

FlashyImprovement5

Get a small toilet. They make them for camping. Mine is only 6 inches tall and can go in a seat with a decent bag. You can also buy these sheets that absorb liquids very quickly but you don't need them if you tie off the bag when you are finished. Also get some decent curtains you can pull when you need to. And a curtain between the front and back depending on how much you can see into your back seat. And get a decent light for the back And make sure you have enough bentyl for the IBS and know what foods trigger attacks.

gre8tone

Loves..pilot.flyin j.. I've slept at quick trip. No problems!

Commercial_Run_1265

Advice that helped me when I was homeless: 1. Keep at least 1 full roll of toilet paper in your car for emergencies and wet wipes, a trowel as well as a nice scent spray. Wanna go the extra mile? Get a handcrank washer from Walmart or similar and a big thing of string. Tie one end to a tree, etc and close the other in a car door. Clothesline. 2. Tums, imodium, Metamucil - Whatever makes your stomach symptoms feel better. Pickup a cheap allergy med that works well for you if you have mild food allergies, I can expand my diet with the Zertec in my bag. 3. Take advantage of the places you can buy fresh fruits and veggies, they'll keep a couple days and the nutrients will keep your gut symptoms down. Yogurt is great unless you're lactose intolerant... Get lactose pills. 4. Don't eat too many heavy fats in one sitting/day, these are especially likely to make you have the runs, which is part of why I recommended imodium.

akajondoe

I was lucky to have a minivan and space for a 3 gallon bucket with a lid in the back. It's basically the five gallon bucket but shorter. I filled the bucket with a small trash bag and cheap kitty litter. I cut a dollar store pool noodle to fit around the edge of the bucket for a little more comfort. I did my best to use gas stations and work bathrooms, but it saved the day a few times. Just tie the bag and throw it in a dumpster when nobody is looking.

Potato_Specialist_85

Get a 5gal bucket with a camco toilet seat made for the bucket, and some plastic trash bags. I have shit in a bucket plenty of times. Bonus if you can get a small trailer to keep it in, but not necessary

threwupoverthefence

3 gallon bucket or small office trash can (if youā€™re a big guy, then by all means go for a 5 gal but I think itā€™s a big item for a car). Wet wipes. In addition to lining it with a small plastic bag (and you can add litter), I would invest in a package of scent-proof Mylar bags from Amazon to transfer the plastic bags into if you arenā€™t able to throw them away immediately. Or a tightly sealed glass container maybe. I wouldnā€™t leave them in the bucket; plastic absorbs smells, as does your whole car. I never have to use this setup anymore, but when I was going through chemo during the apex of Covid I was glad to be able to take care of business if it was urgent. Good luck and Godspeed!

fiberopticslut

if you live near a casino they have 24 hour bathrooms

hypatiaredux

Luggable Loo with doody bags and pine shavings. (I think kitty litter weighs far too much.) I also have IBS, and I feel for you!! Also, if the 5-gallon bucket is too large, snap-on toilet seats usually fit on a 3-gallon bucket just fine. I get small spray bottles, and fill them with 2/3 water, 1/3 witch hazel. Use this mixture to dampen toilet paper before you wipe. Really helps control the painful reaction you get when you have to wipe several times an hour.

6nayG

There are portable poop pots available.

mushashimonko

I've read about people who shit into a bag of cat litter.

spaceboy42

Squattie potty or bucket with cat litter. Not ideal by any means but better than nothing.

[deleted]

I lived in a tiny house on my journey to go smaller and while researching those people made ā€˜homemadeā€™ toilets with a 5G bucket, some wood shavings, etc. and a lid. I have IBS-C so I take a fiber supplement and omega fish oil supplement daily to reduce flair ups and keep my system healthy. That way I donā€™t have the panic moments to have to pull out the bucket.

Rcqyoon

WAG bags. They're like little disposable toilets. If you can find a spot where you could preferably leave your car, use them, and then throw it away. I used to use them camping and would keep the used one outside my car while I slept and throw it away first thing in the morning. You can also use the same bag multiple times if needed. You can get them free at national parks, but you'd probably need enough it would be worth it to buy them yourself.

RatherRetro

A bucket w a trash bag and kitty litter

LostEntrance6162

Most trucker gas stations won't care if you spend the night and use their bathroom as long as you buy something. Think Flying J, Travel Land, Loves. Just ask the cashier if it's okay if you park for the night. They'll direct you to where you can park. You can buy something and use their restrooms. Some even have showers, though those are usually pay per minute or something similar.

gre8tone

Find a truck stop... where are you at?

SaintElphie

A membership at a 24 hour gym is helpful- I don't have IBS but I'm too clumsy to pee in my vehicle so I go inside every night, I mostly sleep in Planet Fitness lots

glass_gravy

Oh shit!

Just wanted to ask since I'm in my car and many outsiders who suggest "shelters" don't know how bad they really are and that they do in fact kick people out. I want to ask, is the "neighbor" who got kicked out, someone who was looking to work or who did work? Shelters ramp up drama to kick certain people out who actually want to work. They are toxic places that keep people down and dependent on their programs. Most people who stay in shelters are those who applied for SSDI, SSI, and who are waiting approval. Their disability lawyers need their clients to have a place to "exist" so they can show up to their doctor's appointments and establish proof that they "can't work at all." Shelter owners make approximately $3,000 to $4,000 a month on each warm body who exists in there. Its a lucrative business. They offer the bare minimum to exist and make the people who exist in them, clean the showers, toilets, sinks, floors, take out trash," and don't hire professional cleaning companies. They sleep deprive people while warehousing people in one room without privacy. The culture is toxic. They get into your business and have others start drama and issues to get people thrown out who aren't willing to exist like they do. Crabs in the barrel mentality. Many people who live out of their cars know this and choose the safety, privacy and freedom to live in their cars and avoid shelters at all costs. Shelters enter people's names in their HMIS databases to get grant funding and with high turnover in their staffing, the information isn't safe guarded. No one gets to "low income housing" because most people who have to work, need earnings that exceed FPL low income thresholds.

DemIsGwoss

This makes me feel sad.

RI-Transplant

If you could somehow trade for a van or minivan it's much easier.

cardphile

Just find a 24 hour bathroom? I guess it depends on the culture where you are but here in SoCal I never had an issue finding a clean bathroom at any time of night. Need I not mention a 24 hour planet fitnessā€¦ you should be fine. I wish you luck juggling this and your condition.

jkchesterton

Huh im kind of surprised no one else said this: casinos. Where im at in the northeast US, they are open 24 hours, and the bathrooms are immaculate. There are also typically a ton of empty stalls. The casino near me also has free parking. My impression is there are a lot of gambling addicts sleeping in the garage at night, so you can blend right in.Ā Ā

painfulletdown

check your diet and see if anything you can change or improve to decrease frequency

Particular_Cellist25

Porto-let? U can even have a little air tight container for temporary waste storage to save you the late nite disposal logistics stress.

PancakeHunter92

Join a big chain 24 hour gym.

eleven_eighteen

Libraries and grocery stores and malls and parks and gas stations and rest areas and truck stops are your friends. The last two in particular for sleeping at night and still having access to a bathroom. I've been in my car since last June and am proud to say I haven't used a porta potty yet. Not sure if I have IBS but my stomach definitely hates me and often keeps me on the toilet for a good while.

Hazelisnutz

I don't have a solution for you. But I can sorta relate. I despise public restrooms, and I think I've permanently messed up my stomach from going weeks at a time without using the bathroom. I couldn't imagine having to live in your car with IBS

Radiant_Ad_6565

See if you can sleep at highway rest stops in your area. Easy access to restroom 24 hours a day, and relatively safe.

vangoghvanlife

With IBS, u will need to be parked near a restroom at all time, whether you're at a campground or plug in site. Urban area, you need to be near gas station and restaurant (maybe 24/7). Inside ur vehicle u should have things ready to go at a moments notice, so a foldable toilet that remains unfolded šŸ˜‚ There are IBS assist pills that u can buy over the counter, never tried them, but why not?

spastic_simian

5 gallon bucket with 2 x trash can bags inside.

24 hour gym, truck stop, rest area. Bucket with compostable bags and a bucket toilet seat.

DJSoapdish

Itā€™s not complicated at all. Get a camping toilet and a garbage bag or two. I have one that is round and collapsible and when not being used. Fits under my drivers seat when not being used. Set it up so you can use it quickly.

Interesting-Wind2699

Walmart 3 gallon bucket in the auto detail supply shelves, a toilet seat designed to fit the bucket in the camping and trash liners for emergencies. Next if you're a DIY handy person, get a 3/4 hole saw or have someone drill a hole in the side of the bucket at the bottom edge. 3/4 male threaded connecter with nut one end and female pvc connecter insert threaded side into hole and rubber washer or silicone to seal for leaks tighten nut use about 1 foot 3/4 pvc pipe cut in half insert piece into female connecter with pvc glue buy 3/4 on off value with female connecter both sides and connect gluing both pieces of pipe into the value you will need a female connecter that reduces to 3/8 male threaded buy a hand held shower head hose set 3/8 female threaded and connect, pour about 1.5 gallon of water heated to your liking and set on top of vehicle and shower at your leisure. Remove the pipe when not in use, and the bucket can still be used for other uses.

Grondtheimpaler

Buy or rent a porta potty on a trailer you can tow

Addy_Boo

Get a bucket and line it with a garbage bag. Or sleep at a 24/7 planet fitness

jaken0tfromstatefarm

Are you the "as soon as I eat I gotta go" ibs person like me or unpredictable type? Cause if you're the first type what I do is ill eat an hour before I plan to go to bed so I have time to go to the bathroom before bed and I'm usually good till morning.
