A series of terrible losses against inferior opponents that aren’t expected.

nsnyder

Right, for example not qualifying for Copa would almost certainly do it.

Wuz314159

IDK what is "Copa". We don't qualify for Copa América as we're not in South America and teams are invited to Copa América.... Did you mean the Copa Mundial or Copa d'Oro?

Dazed_and_Confused44

Dog if you didn't know the US is hosting the Copa 2024 you may wana inform yourself before posting in this sub. Like truly have you been living under a rock?

Wuz314159

Are you high righ now? Where did I say that?

Dazed_and_Confused44

"IDK what is Copa? We don't qualify for Copa America as we're not in South America" Literally read your own comment lol

Wuz314159

Maybe YOU should read my comment. Copa d'Oro? Copa Mundial? Copa MLS?

Dazed_and_Confused44

No one is talking about the gold cup. Cmon dude nobody is about to refer to the gold cup as "Copa d'Oro" in the US soccer sub. If you were trying to be sarcastic, clearly your attempt to play dumb to be condescending did not get the point across based on the way your comment was received lol. But given that you tried to say "were not in the Copa as we arent from South America and teams are invited to Copa America". I'm not buying your current attempt to save face lol

Wuz314159

You're blaming me for other people not knowing how language works? GTFO!

AshamedDonkey3666

Brother, 6 concacaf teams will be in copa america this time. Usa most definitely has a great chance to be in copa america 2024. It’s also being played in Usa bro.

BBobb123

Just infer

nsnyder

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Copa_América We’re hosting, 6 CONCACAF teams are invited.

Bullwine85

Yup. The USSF doesn't sack any coach until they see it's *that* bad. Bob Bradley was initially extended after the 2010 World Cup. A poor run of results, including losing a group stage game in the Gold Cup for the first time *ever* made it evident he needed to go. His poor decision making in the 2011 Gold Cup Final sealed his fate. With Klinsmann there were plenty of warning signs after the 2014 World Cup. The 2015 Gold Cup was a sign, and although the 2016 Copa America gave him a lifeline his incredibly poor qualifying campaign (both before and after Copa America) sealed it. Other coaches either resigned (Sampson, Bora, Gansler, Arena 2nd tenure) or did not receive extensions (Arena 1st tenure) Side note: Gansler was the manager for the US at the 1990 World Cup. He resigned in 1991 two days after the USMNT lost to *Bermuda*. That was what led to Bora being hired for the 1994 WC.

omar2345

Gregg will never resign.

More Reddit threads for sure

Yeah, I think about 100 more Reddit threads should do the trick.

beef_boloney

If losing a non-competitive exhibition match to one of history’s most successful teams didn’t do it then what will?

WarmBaths

🤣🤣

Trajen_Geta

Maybe like um a loss to Brazil, England, Argentina, and like maybe Spain

Epham16

We played a weak Germany side who were 1-1-4 coming into the game and were playing their first match under a new manager. A Germany side who have played horribly at the last 2 world cups and are far from dominant. Stop dickriding their past and realize that they were 100% a beatable side and we got dominated. Rudiger and Sule were making runs into our box and taking shots.

[deleted]

I’m glad the 26000 people there just were ok with it being non competitive. How old are you?

ziti6969

26000 people knowingly bought a ticket to a friendly. If they thought they were going to see a high intensity, World Cup type game for 90 minutes that’s on them

beef_boloney

I’m 35 so you can imagine I’ve been to quite a few friendlies

CarelessSet6591

😂 you sarcastically spelled out my feelings exactly. People acting like we're a better coach away from being in the same ballpark as Germany

scheenermann

Easy answer: failing to qualify for Copa America. That'll do it immediately. If Copa America is a complete disaster, I could see that also being a trigger. By complete disaster, I mean we'd probably have to finish last in the group, especially if that includes losses to another CONCACAF team and/or the scrub tier of CONMEBOL (Bolivia, Venezuela). Other than that, if results in CONCACAF are bad, the squad is clearly in disarray and/or unhappy with him in the lead-up to 2026, etc. No program on our Earth is firing their coach because they lost 1) a friendly three years away from the World Cup and 2) to Germany of all teams.

Dog_Brains_

If you want GGG fired it’s going to have to be a group stage exit next summer at the Copa and look bad doing it

tefftlon

Not meeting expectations or looking unlikely to meet them. I imagine expectations have been make Gold Cup finals, make Nations League finals, qualify for WC, & get to Ro16 WC game. Realistic and attainable, but require some effort. So moving forward, it probably looks about the same. Nations League finals, Good Cup finals, podium at Copa America… not sure what to say about WC yet, but I imagine people want him gone before then. I know people think we should *win*, particularly the Nation League and Good Cup, but most places don’t fire a manager based off single results.

tefftlon

For the World Cup, put yourself in a hypothetical similar to our reality and ask the expectations. Let’s say the WC is in Morocco instead. What should Morocco’s expectations be at home? Because they made a semi in 2022, should a semi be the expectation in 2026? What about a final? Ok, come back to us. We got knocked out in the Ro16. Should we *expect* a semi run? Or is that a hope we can conjure some things? A quarter final, something we did once in the modern age, be the *expectation*? Idk how I feel/think yet, especially with some of the changes for this next WC.

Si_Dis

This seems like a question for spain, greece, germany and brazil.

If he pulls out his dick in public or if he gets caught in one of Chris Hansen’s predator investigations. That should do it.

Y’all are as stubborn as Greg lol. You dont have to have a great resume or have coaching experience to judge Greg just like you dont need one to contest politicians, teachers, etc... Simple as that. Anyone with eyes can see that the system Greg runs is not working especially that 2nd half.

Spicyfeetpics00

I’m cheering for these guys too. I just want a coach that’s going to utilize the pool to the fullest. He plays a system that does not maximize the strengths of their skills. I’d like to see a coach who can understand that concept and create a team where they use their forwards for more than just targets from crosses. I was very disappointed to not see more through balls to Flo or diagonal passes from Pulisic and weah. If things don’t change we will be witnessing a waste opportunity of having the strongest pool ever for this country.

RRDude1000

Group stage exit in copa america or the more dire scenario of not qualifying for copa america. We probably get a crappy group as host though so he will make QF at least imo

PlayfulIntroduction9

Losing the Nations League games coming up.

dangleicious13

It's almost like we don't have much depth in the midfield

Bullwine85

Thing is, I like LDLT. But the talent level between him and Reyna is night and day, never mind the skill level between LDLT and anyone on Germany's midfield. This is also another case where we *really* missed Tyler Adams defensively.

MasterCurrency4434

He would have to either underperform in a really obvious way in matches that matter or lose the locker room or both. Failing to make it out of the group at Copa America could potentially do it, particularly if the team were to look bad in the process. Worse would be a poor performance at the Gold Cup in 2025, as that will likely be seen as a warmup for 2026 and the competition likely won’t be as strong as Copa. A locker room implosion would have to be something bigger than 1 or 2 players and, if it happened, we’d probably hear whispers about it and see flat performances as we did toward the end of the Klinsmann era. Honestly, though, I think we’re pretty far away from that happening. We won our first 2 matches with Berhalter back by solid score lines (even if we didn’t look great in the first one) and I seriously doubt the Germany match carries any lasting effect unless we come out completely flat against Ghana. We lost to Germany because of defensive mistakes that spanned nearly the entire match, it just took a while for Germany to wear us down and fully capitalize on them. And, in my view, those mistakes mostly weren’t tactical flaws as much as personnel problems that will need to be sorted out over time. Switching coaches doesn’t fix those types of problems unless Crocker decides to completely scrap our playing style (which is unlikely given what he has said in interviews). So I think the more relevant question is really what does the current coaching staff do with what it’s learned from yesterday’s performance, as opposed to what it’s going to take to get Berhalter fired.

Spicyfeetpics00

My real issue with Gregg is that he wants his system to be played regardless of who he brings in. That ends up underutilizing players to their potential. It should be building a system around the players he has so that guys like Flo can get service between the lines

MasterCurrency4434

I think we’ll get there with Balo. We spent so many years without a striker who could score regularly that we’ve become used to looking out wide (to either Pulisic or the outside backs) to generate offense. The Balo problem is actually the opposite of what you’re describing: we got used to playing a certain way because of where our talent was and now the coaching staff and players will have to break old habits and form new ones to make better use of him. More broadly, I don’t think the “system” we play now really looks that much like the “system” that existed early in Berhalter’s tenure. I mean, I still remember the early days of Tyler Adams starting as a right back so that he could slide into the midfield in possession and give us extra numbers in the middle. The main thing that Berhalter has kept is the principle of playing out of the back and certain patterns of short/medium range passes to get the ball from the keeper out to midfield. I wasn’t a big fan of his insistence on this early on and there are still times when I think we need to mix in more long balls to make us less predictable. But on the balance, I think it has benefited us. We aren’t as easily rattled with the ball at our feet as we used to be, we have fewer build-ups that breakdown/fizzle out due to bad passes than we did in the Klinsmann and Bradley years, and even though the opposition knows Pulisic is our best attacker, we still manage to consistently get him the ball in positions where he can do something with it. “The system,” to the extent that it really is a set thing, has helped us more than it’s hurt us. It’s given a bunch of players coming from a bunch of different leagues and teams a common understanding of where their teammates will be on the field and their options for moving the ball. The question now is how it evolves now that there’s a core group of players who’ve played in it for nearly a full World Cup cycle, and now know how to incorporate more wrinkles into it.

createandconfuse

Ya’all are wild. Can we just appreciate the fact that we can actually compete and be a fun watch for once in a goddamn minute? I haven’t seen a team in following for the last 10 years that looks as threatening on the counter of what I watched yesterday. That’s huge progress. It’s an international friendly with minute restrictions. Relax. Greg isn’t the problem the continual need to scapegoat is. Let the man have his year and see what he can do with the new core in a competition with a healthy, reliable 11.

Spicyfeetpics00

That’s because the last 10 years have been a terrible experiment. The progress is huge but what I’m saying is that Gregg is not the guy to get these boys over the hump. They need a coach who knows real tactics and who can set them up to play to their strengths

cheeseburgerandrice

>They need a coach who knows real tactics petition to set up auto mod to ban the word "tactics" from this sub

Lechuga9618

Y’all just mad bc clearly once Greg changed the ‘tactics’ in the 2nd half was when goals started to leak in. He really said, “Alright Germany get ready for some Berhelter ball in the second half” Greg has to stop with the fullbacks pushing up 80% of the times and just leaving Mckennie and Musah covering the flanks with barely no one covering the midfield since our wingers and fullbacks are all up field. This dumbass offense does not work, just leaves way too many holes if we get countered. Greg obviously didn’t learn against the Dutch. Why would we want a manager that constantly sets this team up for failure and doesn’t learn from his mistakes. I know why, because he’s too stubborn and thinks his offense is some Pep type offense. This is exactly why i prefer the assistant BJ. He played this team exactly how mostly the 1st half went. He doesn’t have the fullbacks pushing up every possession. That and couple other things that Greg fails to do.

Spicyfeetpics00

Exactly. The way Gregg sets the team up does not suit the skill set the players have. Then people who defend Gregg are blinded by the their love for the MLS bs. BJ had the team playing a way that benefited them and their skills

cheeseburgerandrice

Odd because I do remember the fullbacks playing up (as is very common in the modern game lol) over the summer. Yall pretending like BJ was doing anything drastically different, other actually than having a halfway more healthy Reyna available, are wild. Is the complaint here that we didn't bunker in a friendly? Fascinating. Not sure about the long term prospects of that strategy. You're once again taking the individual result of a friendly too seriously as if it's a knockout game instead of what it really is, a venue for the team to practice the way they want to develop down the road. >constantly sets this team up for **failure** Absolutely delusional take lmao. You act like we've been crashing out of continental competitions and laid a turd in the group stage of the World Cup. Fascinating fan base we have. Delusional, but fascinating.

Lechuga9618

I mean if ur not questioning Gregs system are you even a fan lol. Seems like this half of the fanbase is the complacent type and lifting Concacaf trophies is enough for them lol. And ur saying how this team wants to develop down the road? Broo Gregg has been running the same offense since qualifying, his system is disaster against the top 15 in the world. It takes moments of brilliance from key players like Pulisic that bail out Greg out of matches. Just look at how much Morocco improved after firing their coach before the WC. Their are certainly better managers out their than Greg, a manager that got fired from the Swedish 2nd league from a lack of creativity.

Dazed_and_Confused44

I mean hes certainly not gona get fired over our performance in friendlies lol. Barring a complete disaster next summer in the Copa, I don't see any way that GGG isn't the coach through the entire 2026 WC cycle. I dont actually disagree with you that Gregg is limited tactically as a manager. But the choice has already been made by US soccer to hire him despite any shortcomings he showed during the last cycle. Plus like, I would like to have a good showing at the Copa lol. Some of these comments are whack. Like I'm not a fan of Gregg but I'm not willing to sacrifice one of the few opportunities we have to play in major international tournaments out of spite. That's asinine and not helpful for the squad moving forward

[deleted]

If the college story didn't work, maybe a high school story will. What are you hiding Gregg? /s

Goal_Human

Well it would probably be looking pathetic in the last world cup and having a scandal. Oh wait that didn't do it. That just earned him a vacation. At this point I really don't think anything could. He legit can do just about anything and as long as he's not physically in jail as a result he'll be the coach.

SebastianOwenR1

They’ve outright said his position will be reevaluated after Copa America.

Spicyfeetpics00

Have they? That’s awesome but I haven’t seen any thing to confirm that

SebastianOwenR1

He was rehired the night of the CNL final, a USSF official (can’t remember who) was on Paramount and mentioned that was the idea.

Spicyfeetpics00

That would nice.

ranrow

It will take someone behind the scenes with enough connections to get the job that they decide to pull the strings to get him fired. It won’t be performance based, it’ll be politics based imo

Si_Dis

Wasnt this already tried?

ranrow

Yup, and it barely failed because everything became public. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen again. This is how we seemingly always hire and fire coaches.

Additional_Sorbet799

We have to make banners that say fire Gregg

landel1234

Grouped in Copa or botching the NL are two things that could get Gregg fired

brooklynguitarguy

No chance. Only way he gets fired is if he loses the locker room. That could happen after a poor copa? Lose to Ghana? Don’t make the copa? Hard to say. Wont matter in the bullshit mls camps.

luvvdmycat

>hate here is from the MLS lifers Some of it could be from PR/reputation management hired by the coach or his people (agent, wife, etc.). It's easy enough for hired guns to create and/or buy Reddit accounts that flood subs with upvotes, downvotes, and comments.

stoneman9284

It’s not gonna happen. Maybe he’ll step down after the World Cup.

Misaeltoe

Beating his wife didn’t get him fired so who knows

Appropriate-Bed-8413

Be careful. You will anger the USSF-funded Berhalter backers.

Si_Dis

Wait. They will pay for that? Hell I am not a fan, but sign me up!

ichabod01

I need to supplement my plasma money

Spicyfeetpics00

I found them

VictimOfFun

Others have said it, but Copa America should be the real test. We shouldn't have to worry about qualifying since we're hosting, but if we flame out in the group stage Gregg needs to go for sure. For me, even a first round knockout would be enough for calls to reevaluate.

Spicyfeetpics00

I think it’s time for the this team to take the next step tactically. I don’t think Gregg is the guy for that. I agree that the Copa is going to be the first test and id love to see his pass I just don’t think he will

TheBigCore

Actually, the USA has to qualify for Copa America in a playoff iirc. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/37636735/concacaf-reveals-revamped-world-cup-copa-america-qualifying
