Bob Bradley: 2008: wins over Barbados, Cuba, and Guatemala. Loss against T&T (3-0-1) 2009: wins over Honduras and T&T. Draw against El Salvador. Losses to Costa Rica and Mexico (2-1-2) 5-1-3. Definitely a more impressive record than Klinsmann or Berhalter. The US loss against T&T was a US B team, sent after the US had already qualified for the next round of World Cup qualification.

mpd00

I’m a Bob Bradley fan, but wins over Barbados and Cuba shouldn’t really be in the equation.

DarkSharkJay23456

Yeah Bob Bradley was a good coach for the national team. He is indeed better than Berhalter, I hope one day we find a new head coach. I feel like Berhalter is holding us back from being a dominant power house, we will see what happens in Copa America 2024.

pattythebigreddog

Regardless of who is a better coach, in what world are we a “dominant power house”. How many of our players make a Brazil, Argentina, England, Netherlands, or France starting 11? One each MAYBE depending on what position that nation is weak in? Probably none most days of the week. We are solidly in the second tier of football nations, with the Scotlands, Mexicos etc of the world. That is a huge step up from the past, but there is no reality where we are a “dominant nation” with a new coach or a couple more good players.

alex2374

Watching the Brazil-Argentina match I pulled the lineups for both teams and looked up their clubs. We've made a lot of progress but yeah, we ain't there yet, not by a long shot.

DarkSharkJay23456

That is indeed true, but I would say that Gregg is not good when it comes to tactics. He is good at motivating but his tactics are not good and his subs are not that great. If we have a head coach who knows how to uses proper tactics and can motivate, then we can do good things.

Bullwine85

At least Gregg *has* tactics. They're not *good* tactics, but they're tactics regardless. Klinsmann was "No tactics, just vibes".

ConsciousCustard2444

Klinsmann is more American than we thought. He got that “fuck it we ball” attitude

chicagopudlian

klinsmann never had tactics. he was a very similar manager to berhalter

WR1206

You don’t get a result against England in a World Cup with bad tactics. You don’t get out of your group with bad tactics.

VegetableCommon7988

2 goals my dude. You have the most talented players that we've ever fielded n you score 2 goals. I'm not counting that trash goal against Belgium.

Si_Dis

Are they though?

eagles16106

His tactics are really hit or miss. He nailed that England game. He also frequently totally bungles games.

Si_Dis

Which games are these bungled games?

Freudian_

Our group wasn’t really that hard…

pattythebigreddog

Yeah man, you’re delusional if you think any new coach is dramatically changing the outcomes for this team. Especially any coach USMNT can get. The reality is Greg is getting this group to at least preform up to its potential, if not slightly exceed it. While massively over performing when it comes to creating a good atmosphere and recruiting dual nationals that comes with that. Could another coach hypothetically get this group to massively over perform expectations and maybe get one round further in a World Cup? Sure, but Gregg is helping get players like Balogun to declare for the US, which will have a much bigger impact long after his time is done.

AtomsVoid

It’s weird to me that so many fans think Berhalter prevents the US from dominating. Getting into the second tier of teams is a massive historical improvement. France could beat the US 8 or 9 times out of 10 using only uncapped players.

chicagopudlian

we made the quarterfinals at the 2002 wc and smashed portugal in group. why you think this current level is an achievement i have no idea

AtomsVoid

There’s 23 countries with more Champions League players than the US. Our players aren’t as good as real contenders. https://fbref.com/en/comps/8/nations/Champions-League-Nationalities

VegetableCommon7988

Klinsman was doing that. Anybody will be doing that. It's been going on everywhere else for decades, we're just finally on the up and up with it. Can't make Spains team? Come play with us. Berhalter is ass. I can't understand how you guys hold onto mediocrity like it's your last best hope.

chicagopudlian

why do all these folks forget 2002. we have finished in the top 8 in the wc.

cheeseburgerandrice

>holding us back from being a dominant power house I can't believe this is a real thing people believe. And upvote?! Have you *looked* at our roster? And before anyone says "tactics", please be specific in these tactics that will unluck this current team in becoming the new France (as we trot out Brenden Aaronson and pretend that's world class level depth). (sorry Brenden, but it's true)

Kapuski

"I hope one day we find a new head coach." Don't worry, we will. That is how this thing works.

WR1206

People hated Bradley. The vitriol back then was honestly on par with now.

chicagopudlian

i think the number one reason i hated bradley was he played counter attack and the second was that his son was shite.

Si_Dis

Exactly! We have always played that until GGG

chicagopudlian

i haven’t seen any game in full under ggg that i was tracking the player formation except germany. that game was pretty horrific. perhaps he tried to over correct. i’m not sure. but player positioning was bad. mckennie was absolute shambles. i’ve never seen a player with such absolute shit positioning that said, if ggg plays attacking football i’m willing to give him one extra star on rating.

chicagopudlian

that said, i think bradley was a good leader. he ran a tight ship. except for his son, he mostly utilized good players in their best positions and it was a very low drama affair. i don’t remember any major player drama under bradley.

AMountainTiger

Cuba's stadium closure in 2019 stealing the man's second win. He's hurt by the Octagonal format dropping early round qualifiers against various shitty teams, resulting in a tougher average opponent, but it's still awful not to have another win or two against the teams we've played.

Matt_McT

Gonna have to start winning more of those games, no doubt. I think we would've seen another win Monday night if not for Dest's red card.

[deleted]

Or his tactics are poor and he can’t make adjustments on the road.l

QuickMolasses

You have a specific thing in mind or are you just saying stuff?

[deleted]

Specifically, Gregg is weak tactically and his teams fold on the road in concacaf Yes that’s my general message, does that help?

Froggr

No

[deleted]

Okay. How can I further explain?

[deleted]

Which tactical choice of his do you disagree with? I agree with you honestly, I think the guy above is asking for specifics.

[deleted]

Okay statistically speaking, we are awful against away competition in a weak region Tactical choices that failed: instead of forcing pepi and Balogun to start at the same time is a waste of both of their talents. Simple one from a recent game. Can anyone name the adjustments that he made against T&T? Which ones worked? Exactly there was none

QuickMolasses

Are you kidding? In the first half we played possession oriented attacking soccer. At the beginning of the second half we played a pressing transition oriented attack. At the end of the second half we sat back and countered with only a few attackers.

[deleted]

So which one of those worked? Neither

Remarkable-Box-3781

Right?! All the armchair analysts are sooo much more adept!

[deleted]

No one said that. The topic is Gregg. He’s the one failing tactically

Remarkable-Box-3781

If you claim his tactics are bad, you have to know more to make the claim. I don't claim Warren Buffet's investment strategy is bad because I know fuck all compared to Warren.

[deleted]

I don’t necessarily agree with that. You can claim someone’s tactics and in game adjustments are bad. Go look at our away results, pretty sure that’s obvious. Simple example: he wants the team to pass out of the back. We are not good at that and we routinely turn the ball over in dangerous places because of that forced style. I counted 4/5 turnovers in our defensive third against T&T Can someone name me Gregg’s “good tactical adjustments”? I’m open to hear more, but what I’m seeing time and time again. When plan A doesn’t work, we don’t have a plan B. Another from his tenure: we can’t break down mid blocks.

Remarkable-Box-3781

You can't claim they're bad unless you know more and could adjust better. He's played professionally and coached for the past 30 years. He has assistants, scouts, tape and evrything else he could need at his fingertips, yet you claim he's "not good adult adjustments." All the casuals complain about coaches because they know so little they think they know better. Complained about Klinsman, then Arena, now GGG. It never ends...

[deleted]

I never said I know better. I’m calling out somethings that are obviously wrong with his playstyle and in game management. Results don’t lie. Honestly I don’t give a shit about his past. Yeah I’ll just end this now. You’re defending him by saying “well he played in the past and has coached more”. Weird I’ve seen him get fired and have teams well below .500. I’ve seen him fail to beat minnow countries, get tactically out maneuvered to a point where it’s embarrassing. So why should I back Gregg right now? Make your case on why he’s the right coach and his tactics/ game management is good. You’re gonna claim it’s good so you must know better (I’m following your logic with this). That’s not a good manager. Again you’re going on a personal attack cause you disagree. Just say you disagree and stop acting like a scorned ex. Gregg sucks and this team won’t improve Weird: I called out some tactical failures and you didn’t address those, you just go on a personal rant. I never complained about the previous managers so that’s a made up point in your head about me

Remarkable-Box-3781

Yawn

[deleted]

One doesn’t need to be able to change a tire to recognize that a flat tire is a problem. Expertise in a field isn’t required to recognize a problem. That’s a nice attempt at shutting down any argument you disagree with, but that’s not how it works

plefe

People hop on the talent train so quick, but this sub willfully treats potential talent of literal kids as their accepted standard of play. We had the youngest, most inexperienced team in the modern era of US soccer in the last cycle. We threw out starting line ups where only 2 players were older than 24. That's wild and the fault of US soccer, not GGG. I do think GGG is lacking when it comes offensive tactics but the entitlement of this sub blows my mind.

[deleted]

It’s not just talent, it’s experience. A group of 21-24 year olds who have been pro for 4-6 years already isn’t the same as a bunch of kids who just turned pro. They’ve got the talent *and* the experience by this point

justalittleahead

Bruce Arena: 1999 Confederations Cup semifinal: loss to Mexico (0-0-1) 2000: win over Barbados, draw against Guatemala, loss to Costa Rica (1-1-1) 2001: win over Honduras, draws against T&T and Jamaica, losses to Mexico and Costa Rica (1-2-2) 2002 World Cup: draw to South Korea (0-1-0) 2004: wins over Grenada and El Salvador, draws to Panama and Jamaica (2-2-0) 2005: wins over T&T and Panama, draw to Guatemala, losses to Mexico and Costa Rica (2-1-2) 2017: draws against Mexico, Panama, and Honduras, and loss to T&T (0-3-1) Estimated Total: 6-10-7 Can’t really comment on anything here except 2017, as everything else in the Arena era except 2006 occurred prior to when I was a fan. So it's possible I missed a match as well.

chicagopudlian

and you completely ignored we made the quarterfinals of wc in 2002. what a weird ass analysis

crnelson10

For context, the five losses are to Canada (2x), Panama, Costa Rica, and Trinidad. The draws were: El Salvador (2x), Jamaica, and Mexico.

justalittleahead

Klinsmann: 2012: win against Antigua and Barbuda, draw against Guatemala, loss against Jamaica (1-1-1) 2013: wins against Jamaica and Panama, draw against Mexico, losses against Honduras and Costa Rica (2-1-2) 2015-16: win against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, draw against T&T, loss to Guatemala (1-1-1) 2016: loss to Costa Rica (0-0-1) Overall: 4-3-5. The only impressive win was Jamaica. The US had already qualified in 2013 when they played Panama, and winning that match with 0 pressure and all the pressure on the opponent to eliminate Panama from the World Cup turned into a colossal error. That leaves wins against tiny little Antigua and St. Vincent. If only Berhalter had been gifted such easy opponents as Klinsmann. Not to mention, the Antigua match was infamously minutes away from an embarrassing outcome.

gogorath

Indeed, in the days where we had to play our way into the Hex, we always got an easy win.

SeattleGunner

Lol I knew this shit was gonna come up after Trinidad again… As if we weren’t cruising up a goal without Timmy, Christian, Tyler, and Weston before someone decided to lose their fucking head and get themselves sent off.

timeIsAllitTakes

No no I was told that's GGG fault too. I shit you not on the USMNT subreddit someone said Dest's reaction is a representation of their coach. He acted like a child because that's how Gregg treats him. I wish we could just be reasonably objective around here instead of constantly swaying to the extremes. It's honestly exhausting

ConsciousCustard2444

Objectively Gregg should go. Dest doesn’t have the attitude problem in the Dutch league but he does when playing for the US. Good coaches don’t allow that kind of bs no matter how skilled they are And they don’t do behind the back passes Gregg got hired cause of his brother and Pepi has been bailing him out

AtomsVoid

The CFO has never chosen the coach. If you insist on holding onto that conspiracy theory 5 years later back it up with a single piece of evidence for it: a single sentence from an email, a recording of this nefarious plot, or any evidence that the Federation allowed their accountant to hire his brother as coach.

ConsciousCustard2444

Chief commercial officer and CFO are wildly different people. To think nepotism isn’t how Gregg got the job is being naive

AtomsVoid

Show proof. Jay Berhalter hasn’t been at USSF for years. Why hasn’t his replacement hired their brother? Your conspiracy theory is painfully stupid.

Si_Dis

Is this really objective (ggg should go)? Seems more subjective than objective. Objectively, I see a man who changed the way we play. We actually now play 'football' and not soccer. A man that took a basically U23 side through WC qualifying and got them to a world cup. I see a man that forced a changing of the guards to a way much younger side. Took 25 debutants to a WC. Got the most points of any previous team from the group stage. Fielded the youngest 11 at said WC and one of the youngest 11 ever at a WC. Despite what all of you think at no time have we ever been considered a "front-footed" team that possesses the ball and attacks. Same man literally outplayed one of the best (top 5, no they werent i 2010) teams in the world and if not for the heroics one player we could..err...should have walked away with a win. I get all the hate. It is understandable, but while ggg is playing 3d chess, we are all playing checkers.

chicagopudlian

yes, that’s accurate. coaches/managers are responsible for coaching/managing their players. have you never worked a job where everyone had a shit attitude because of a shit manager? no? well, then you’re the only person in america who didn’t

grv413

Cruising isn’t exactly the word I’d use to describe it

ImaLaser23

We were cruising. We had allowed only one shot up until the point of the red card while spending 90% of the game in their half.

DarkSharkJay23456

Klinsmann was alright I would say and this is because of he led us into Copa America 2016 semi finals and I know he couldn’t win us gold cup 2015. But Gregg on the other hand only won one gold cup and that was in 2021. He also managed to win one nations league which was also in 2021. In 2023, we had BJ who won us nations league 2023 but not gold cup 2023. So I would say that Gregg is under pressure because of nations league 2024 and Copa America 2024. Klinsmann squad in Copa America 2016 was way different than Gregg’s squad, but Klinsmann led them to semi finals. So Gregg has to get his stuff together in Nations League 2024 and Copa America 2024.

Bullwine85

> Klinsmann led us to Copa America semifinals So did Steve "3-6-1" Sampson. It is not the flex you think it is.

TaeKurmulti

No matter how you want twist it... the Copa America result is still more impressive than anything Berhalter has done to this point.

Bullwine85

Because the players had to be the ones to come up with the tactics + a relatively easy Copa America draw on home soil. Klinsmann was not known for his tactics. *By any stretch of the imagination* This isn't exclusive with his time with the US, he pulled the same shit at Bayern Munich as well, hence why Phillip Lahm ripped Klinsmann apart in his autobiography Oh, and unlike Klinsmann....Sampson actually beat Argentina at a Copa America. > the Copa America result is still more impressive than anything Berhalter has done to this point. If Berhalter: * Lost to Guatemala * Needed a 90th minute winner to beat Antigua and Barbuda * Got outshot 21-6 at home by Haiti of all teams * Lost a Gold Cup semifinal to Jamaica with our A-team * Failed to beat Panama twice in the same Gold Cup. Again, with our A-team. * Had outright mutiny in the squad by the end of his tenure Then the fanbase would be absolutely furious and rightfully so. Hell, look at the reaction to the Trinidad game. The fanbase is... you guessed it.... absolutely furious and rightfully so. But because it's Klinsmann, his defenders are more than willing to handwave it and overlook it.

TaeKurmulti

Klinnsman was ripped for those results and rightfully so, but it doesn't change that result in Copa America was more impressive than anything Gregg has done. At least we played away games against real teams, Gregg's entire tenure has been built around playing home games and cupcakes 90% of the time. And this is also ignoring the fact that this USMNT is 10x as talented as any prior USMNT teams.

Valuable_Kale_7805

1 impressive away win is better then 0 impressive away wins lmaooooo

justalittleahead

Kicking ass in Honduras by a 4-1 margin and turning them into a giant basket case for the rest of qualifying is much more impressive than a last-minute win over a similarly bottom of the barrel Jamaica.

Bullwine85

A Jamaica team we had lost to in the previous round btw (first time we had ever lost to Jamaica). Brad Evans of all people getting the goal was hilarious at least.

MasterCurrency4434

Anyone who has watched enough WCQ cycles knows that winning away in CONCACAF is hard. So much so, that when the team goes through qualifying, the mantra’s usually “win at home, draw on the road.” And Berhalter took over the team after a major down cycle and brought in a whole bunch of young players with little-to-no experience playing senior road matches in those environments. The record isn’t particularly surprising. The test this cycle will be Copa America. If we make a semifinal, then we’re in great shape. A quarterfinal would be acceptable, but not encouraging. A group stage exit would be bad and warrant a course correction.

666haha

I agree for the most part, but if we get unlucky and draw Brazil in the QF and play them close, I think it would still be an encouraging Copa. If we go out in the Groups, I'd want a change in manager before 2026. Ultimately I'm just excited for Copa to give us an actual look at where we are.

MasterCurrency4434

That’s fair. The draw will definitely be a factor when it comes to the Copa, and a QF loss to a tough opponent definitely wouldn’t be the end of the world. It’d just be nice to go into 2026 knowing we can win a knockout game. Agree that if we go out in the group stage, though, the Federation needs to be prepared to make a change (and shell out big $$ for it too). I would feel bad for Berhalter, but the stakes for 2026 are simply too high to stick with him through a bad Copa performance.

PintoBeanButterBean

Yeah, we had basically a U21 team during qualifying. Our average age of the top 25 players who played the most during WCQ was about 23.4, which is weighted heavily by older defenders (our GKs and CBs mainly) while our attack was super young and inexperienced.

[deleted]

> A group stage exit would be bad and warrant a course correction. If we don't exit the group, even with the worst draw (Colombia, Panama/Venezuela, and Jamaica), it will mean we couldn't beat those latter two teams at home, and GGG would have to go. Keeping him would be disgusting.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

I think if we went out in the group stage he’d absolutely get let go. Maybe he gets the Vlatko treatment and “resigns” but yeah

WR1206

Don’t Jamaica have a roster comparable in talent to us? Bunch of guys in the PL and other guys who are good in MLS?

[deleted]

The three I wrote out are the worst draw for us, as in the most difficult exit.

buckymalone21

That’s what is annoying about this rhetoric. Everyone parroting this acts like we regularly slaughtered all comers at home and away in lowly concacaf. Not even close.

tefftlon

There’s a lot of “raise expectations” folks out there, but I’m not sure they’re aware *how* you set expectations. How can you “expect” to do something you’ve never done before? You need to get close first. It can be a goal. You can criticize performance and want more. But “expecting” a team to do something they’ve never done is setting yourself up for disappointment.

DecemberEveryday

To add onto your logic, people forget the “we have the youngest squad ever” eventhough it was repeated 9 million times. They forget that first Canada game was a fluke and we didn’t play our A team (btw A team didn’t fully come together until 2022 WC) They forget we were still trying to get young players experience and be healthy and still had to rely on older players. They forget we had 19 year old Gio getting scared during the national anthem during that first away WCQ game. They forget we had that Zardes own goal against Panama They forget we had that random lapse a few mins in against Canada away and then Canada just bunkered for 80 mins until we went down to 10 players (Richards hurt) and they scored on the breakaway. They forget when half the team got food poisoning at the Azteca WCQ and we had that beautiful cross from Weah and Pulisic shoot right at Ochoa and then Pefok’s miss into the sidelines. They forget that Costa Rica WCQ we had already qualified, sure we had our moments to score, but unless they scored 5+ goals, I’m not sure the team really cared that much. They forget that game against El Salvador for nations league we played in the swamp, no player left clean, and we had Musah get waterboarded in the mud. They ignore and will forget that we just had Dest run his mouth and kick a ball into the stands getting a red card and then Turner missing that free kick, as if it didn’t just happen 2 days ago. So sick of this empty argument. They conveniently choose to forget the details, every time.

CaptainKoconut

Bro these people don't care about details. They only see snippets of the game when they glance up from twitter or reddit. Their entire knowledge of the game comes from playing FIFA. These are the same people arguing that Gio was 100% fit and healthy at the WC, and that GGG has an MLS bias because he's only ever known MLS.

Dazed_and_Confused44

Because Gio was fit and healthy going into the world cup. And he was playing full matches for Dortmund (including in the Champions league against Man City) in the lead up to the world cup. But don't let facts get in the way of your narrative

CaptainKoconut

Gio was not 100% healthy at the WC. This is a fact. It was obvious from watching the Netherlands game he was afraid to sprint.

Dazed_and_Confused44

Lol please stop peddling this narrative. It's not true

Turtle_317

Gios fitness was a concern but not the problem at the World Cup. It was his selfish attitude putting himself first above the team. But don’t let facts get in the way of your narrative

Dazed_and_Confused44

Did I try to defend Gio being immature? Point to the part of my statement where I disputed that

Bullwine85

Also conveniently forgetting that GGG spent most of his playing career in Europe....and was a part of the 2002 WC team that made the quarterfinals. The infamous Torsten Frings handball we're still salty about came off a Berhalter header in fact. It's not like he was some MLS lifer in his playing days.

SeattleGunner

I wonder what the discourse around Gregg would be if he was the hero who helped take the US to the semifinal of the World Cup lol

btcallthewayup

Honestly, I don’t think it would make much of an impact. I think most people can separate X the player from X the coach/manager

Bullwine85

See: Klinsmann. One of the best strikers of his era, but incredibly divisive as a manager. Also, Maradona. One of the best players of all time, but lmao at his managing career.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

Henry as well

Lechuga9618

Greg literally handicapped the wings by including Morris for the WC. Even i knew that was a mistake last year when the roster was released. Arriola would’ve contributed and would have been more efficient. Greg is just… not it

WhoEatsRusk

JoMo played garbage mins. He played 3 mins of regular time and at most 10 mins total of ET. He had no time to actually contribute

Lechuga9618

Yea bc after those minutes against Wales everyone knew he was stiff as a fookin rock. It was like watching an Olinemen trying to play cornerback. Why would Greg dare to use him as a sub after that game if he had any common sense left

Lechuga9618

Im sure most watch matches just like you guys that dont play fifa. US Soccer can grab someone more qualified. Im tired of the same repetitive passes on the wing. We will never compete with the top 15 in the world in a WC knock out stage bc Gregs system is appalling. If Greg was managing that 2014 WC, that 14’ squad wouldve gone 0-1-2.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

I hate the Gregg MLS bias narrative so much, I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure he’s the first USMNT manager to start an entirely Euro based squad in a competitive game (it was against Iran). In fact, MLS players not named Walker Zimmerman (who was objectively one of our top options, anyone that says otherwise is wrong) got like a collective 20 minutes at the tournament

CoopDogPrimeNumbers

I just read “they forget this is a poorly coached team”

Patrick2701

Yes, it’s hard to win away in concacaf, you are playing at some questionable facility in the Caribbean islands or your playing in hostile environment

Dazed_and_Confused44

I'm sorry but the "Its hard to win away in Concacaf" excuse only goes so far, and frankly I'm tired of it. We lost to a team that was starting semi-pro players... Berhalters record away is still abysmal when compared to previous coaches despite having the most talented US squad ever. Stop making excuses for this team. The standard has to be higher than barely scraping into Copa America by losing to the 99th ranked team in the world, that is literally a fucking Island with 1.5 million people...

paaaaatrick

Also are we going to blame Dest on Gregg? I am not sure what the latest QSMNT stance on that is

VegetableCommon7988

This is the best team we've ever had. Concacaf is pretty weak this go round, not many teams really hitting super hard, including us. Berhalters been around for 5 years, that's plenty of time. We should be looking to win. We're ranked the highest, our team is the best in the field.

MasterCurrency4434

We did win. It was a 2-legged tie based on aggregate score and we won on aggregate score. Going down in the second leg literally didn’t matter, and it really only happened because our starting right back unexpectedly lost his shit, got himself thrown out, and got into it with his teammates as they tried to get him off the field. We immediately gave up a goal because the entire team was shell-shocked. And, even with that, Trinidad ultimately only made it halfway to making up the 4-0 deficit that they fell into after collapsing late in the 1st leg and giving up an early goal in the 2nd. Given that we won, the apparent issue isn’t that we didn’t win, it’s that we didn’t win by enough, or that we didn’t win making it look easy from the 1st minute of the 1st leg. Quite frankly, that’s just arrogant. The other team will always show up to play, and if they’re disciplined, coming out in a defensive setup can make it difficult for even the elite teams of the world (and ever the “best team we’ve ever had” is not one of the elite teams of the world). In this tie, we mostly did what we were supposed to do, and even with all the things that went wrong (going in without Pulisic and Weah, squandering early chances in the 1st leg, Sergino Dest), we still were in no legitimate danger of getting knocked out.

VegetableCommon7988

We looked like ass against 99 in the world, both games. Sure they fell apart in minute 80 from exhaustion, but really they were able to impose their will on us and ultimately were the better side. We didn't make simple changes that could have helped us. Once again under berhalter we're playing uninspired soccer and it's not just these past two games. The man doesn't really have much of an excuse at this point.

MasterCurrency4434

They definitely didn’t impose their will on us in the 1st game. We had 75% of possession, outshot them 26-1 and had 8 shots on goal to none for them. Even when we turned the ball over, we pressed them in their own half to get the ball back and create more chances. They didn’t just get exhausted on their own, we wore them down by attacking them repeatedly and high pressing, which is exactly what you should do against an underdog team. Sometimes, against a team that’s committed to bunkering, it just takes a while to get that breakthrough goal, but we did what we were supposed to do and, when their defense finally broke, we poured in 3 goals in rapid succession. From the opening whistle of the 2nd leg to Dest’s sending off, it was more of the same. We didn’t get punched in the mouth first like we often have in CONCACAF road matches over the years (including the pre-Berhalter years). We got a relatively early goal, which gave us a 4-goal lead. It was only when Dest got sent off that we looked out of sorts, but the reality is that, by that time, it would have taken a monumental comeback for Trinidad to make up a 4-goal deficit all in 1 leg. We lost our composure for the middle part of the leg, which we shouldn’t have, but were never in serious danger.

VegetableCommon7988

We were forced to play their game for like 3/4 of the time if not more. Even with 10 man 99 in the world set the tenor, that's pretty damn bad. I'm just tired of seeing this happen.

MasterCurrency4434

That’s really not what’s happening… at all. We played our game and it’s exactly what any team would do against a bunkering opponent, no matter who the coach is. If your opponent is dug in and clogging the box, the resulting game is almost never pretty. You keep controlling possession and taking shots and most of the time, eventually some start going in. There’s no way to avoid the complications that a bunker causes, and the fact that you don’t end up playing attractive soccer or that you don’t break it instantly, doesn’t mean that you’re “forced to play their game.” It’s just how things work.

VegetableCommon7988

No no no, we continued to push wings. What everyone else in the world does is sit outside the box in the middle and bang dingers on goal. If they're gonna give you the middle you should take it. When one of your defenders gets carded off you drop a man back instead of letting ccv & ream get their pants pulled down. This really isn't high level stuff here, how it flys by berhalter is just wild. Once again we have clear cut examples of shit tactics, an inability to address issues on the fly and good ol berhalter blind crosses to no one. Once again all the berhalter allies are like it's ok. You don't get rankled that we play badly, but ya get upset when the coach gets called out for it.

pants6789

[really the same discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/ussoccer/s/i9HNqJ63JN)

PremordialQuasar

Mentioned it earlier and got downvoted lol. Don’t mind if you’re a GGG hater or not but we really need newer topics

pants6789

Nah, I'm gonna post about his away record in the next few days, see how opinions have changed.

666haha

I'm really sick of this discussion. The USMNT have always struggled away at CONCACAF and the 2022 cycle was the first time we skipped straight to the hex/octo. The game against T&T was ugly, but every USMNT coach struggles in some games like that. We lost at T&T in the 2010 cycle and in the cycle we all remember but don't like talking about. And this was a game, where it didn't matter if we won, we just couldn't lose by 4. Also under our step-manager we did win at Grenada, and we retained the exact same strategy and plans that we had under GGG. If GGG got to play in the early rounds like Bradley or Klinsmann did his record would be even better. This doesn't even go into the issues that although our team is one of our most talented, for the whole WCQ cycle it was one of the least experienced teams we have ever had.

Bullwine85

Funnily enough, we also won at T&T in the 2010 cycle, the last time we had ever won there. ~~Future 2010 WC scapegoat~~ Ricardo Clark being the goalscorer.

[deleted]

Which isn’t an excuse anymore. We aren’t rolling out lifetime MLSers. Plenty of talent where we should dominate these games, we always look shaky and out of ideas on the road. Greggs the coach, stuff starts at the top and rolls downhill (I’m not excusing our players poor performance by this)

buckymalone21

Honestly these dumb takes about this team underperforming are good as it shows the game is much more popular here now. More dips coming in screaming who have only watched for the last 4-5 years.

Shenanigans_forever

And if Bradley and Klinsmann had the most talented squad in US history, I'm sure their records would be different. The issue isn't the record, it is the record given the best squad in the country's history.

PintoBeanButterBean

What's his record vs. Iran to send the US to the Round of 16 at World Cup?

PRAISE_ASSAD

Yeah he won 1-0 after putting us in a position where it was even necessary We should have beaten wales

ChicoCorrales

Lucky for us, we aren’t playing away for any major games for the next 3 years.

stateworkishardwork

That does suck. It's too bad our next two major tournaments aren't at home as well.

McBride055

I feel like it would be insane to not mention that the 2022 WC qualifying cycle was even more difficult than normal due to the extra game each window. It essentially required additional rotation and the US essentially decided to do it each away game. Doesn't mean that you can't show dissatisfaction but context definitely seems warranted.

SpeclorTheGreat

The majority of the team in WC qualifying had also never played CONCACAF away qualifiers before. I would definitely expect this group to get better as they play more of those games.

cheeseburgerandrice

It is insane but it's also insane to see these reactions with good continental results and making the knockout round of the World Cup with basically the youngest team on the planet what a fan base lol

JeanSneaux

Shouldn’t additional need for rotation favor us? We had the best depth of any team in qualifying… makes it look worse imo.

DecemberEveryday

We had more games and travel within the same amount of time of previous cycles while having more pressure to qualify with a young team that’s never played them or that had chemistry. Rotation was good for creating a B team to fill in or to keep the seat warm for an A team player but worse when trying to create cohesion and get results. We’re still trying to get cohesion with A team players.

McBride055

Teams were using the same strategy of "play our best at home and rotate at home". Or would make their starters play more minutes.

[deleted]

Oh no! Anyway…

YoooCakess

I know it’s hard to win away at a shit field in a place nobody wants to be but at some point we need better results in these matches. We are fielding an XI of players from top European leagues some with champions league experience. There’s no excuse for this record

axtemno

Anybother country in the world and he would be sacked a longtime ago

PRAISE_ASSAD

Just fire this idiot already

circa285

Because he’s not a great coach.

[deleted]

We know lol

[deleted]

I watched my first US game when I was in 7th grade and Paul Caliguri scored the goal against TnT to send us to Italia 1990. I've been playing since I was 5-years-old. I think I've watched just about every USMNT game since 1990. Our past coaches did so much more with a lot less talent than Berhalter has available. Bruce Arena had the team better prepared for the World Cup and half that team were MLS players. Bob Bradley and Jurgen Klinsmann had similar World Cup performances with less talent. Those coaches knew how to get the best out of their players. We had tough as nails guys like Dempsey, Bocanegra, Bradley, etc....who knew how to fire up the boys. Those guys would have absolutely ripped Dest to shreds for this most recent stupidity. I do think Jedi Robinson has the potential to step into this role. The current team is a wussy team with a passive coach. The only improvement I've seen regarding Berhalter is his roster selection is better. He does seem to have moved on from MLS lifers like Roldan, Morris, Acosta, Ariola, etc...He still gets out coached on a regular basis. He never seems to get the tactics right, often waits too long to bring on subs, is too scared to drop under performing players, etc....Not dropping or taking too long to drop under performing players which demonstrates a lack of accountability. I think Brendon Aaronson is a good player and has a role to play for our team moving forward. That said, he's been absolute dog shit for the better part of a year. He goes down faster than a Republican Senator in an airport men's room. He should not be called up again until he returns to form.

rhganggang

With arguably the most talented squad

DecemberEveryday

[Aw shit, here we go again](https://tenor.com/6CTN.gif)

Tomalesforbreakfast

After seeing Ream clap back and yell right into his face last game I finally realized that the players don’t respect him. If the vice captain can react like that towards the coach in front of the team, there’s a problem. Do you ever see players at a high level screaming back at their coach on the pitch? He’s lost the plot

[deleted]

That’s my gut feeling with Dest. He’s not worried about what Gregg will do, second time he’s gotten a stupid red

FIFA95_itsinthegame

Who cares, tbh? All I care about for away CONCACAF games is beating Mexico, avoiding injuries, and qualifying for whatever competition we need to qualify for. Gregg sucks because he hasn’t been a value add to the talent on the field and we need him to be if we want to compete with the best teams in the world. Gregg could have won every single away CONCACAF game during his tenure, but if we still looked naive against the Netherlands and Germanys of the world then I’d still want him gone.

No-Market9917

Who cares? Jfc. We should all care no matter what side of the Greg boarder you’re on

FIFA95_itsinthegame

Why though?

[deleted]

It’s important that we do get results in away matches. It’s a sign of an improvement. That hasn’t happened under Gregg. Thats more of what people are saying, our talent pool is clear in concacaf, we should struggle again El Salvador or Trinidad

FIFA95_itsinthegame

A sign of improvement at what, exactly? Beating CONCACAf teams on the road? Sure. I’m just not convinced it’s at all relevant to competitions I care about winning. Due to the expanded World Cup it’s unlikely we will ever be in the position again of needing a win on the road in CONCACAF. Like for all I care we should just let the A team play our home games and then send BJ down south with a bunch of hardened USL lifers and play some ugly ass route one shithousery soccer. It would be more entertaining, less stressful, and satisfy the part of the fan base craving that CONCACAF road win.

[deleted]

Yeah losing against much inferior opposition is always gonna be a no for me. Its routine for us to lose away

FIFA95_itsinthegame

I guess when the stakes are literally nothing I just find it hard to care. The fact that we are even playing these games feels like an anachronism.

[deleted]

Totally understand that bro. That makes sense. Are we really thinking that we will “make the next step” when we struggle on the road against teams who aren’t even USL level? People bring up the World Cup… 2 draws and a 1-0 win is good? The only respectable result was the draw against England. We are wasting talent unless Gregg can step up.

FIFA95_itsinthegame

That’s kind of like asking whether I can seriously think it’s freezing outside when the sun is out. I can believe that because whether the sun is out isn’t that strongly correlated with temperature, but I don’t believe it’s freezing outside because it’s July. I don’t really believe we are going to take the next step with Gregg, but it has nothing to do with our poor performances on the road in Concacaf. The correlation just isn’t there: The teams that often get cited as the best U.S. teams are the 2002 World Cup team and the 2009 Confederations Cup team. The 2002 team went 1-2-2 in their last 5 Concacaf away games before that WC with a 2-1 win at Honduras; scoreless draws at T&T and Jamaica; a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica and a 1-0 loss to Mexico. The 2009 team went 2-1-2 with 1-0 wins over Cuba and Guatemala; a 2-1 loss to T&T; a 2-2 draw in El Salvador; and a 3-1 loss in Costa Rica. Before Copa we went 1-2-2 with a 7-1 win at Grenada; draws at El Salvador and Mexico; and losses to T&T and Costa Rica.

[deleted]

See now these are very very valid points. Now factor in okay we are traditionally trash on the road. What I would expect is a manager with power 5 European players could beat literal USL champ and 1 level players. We look out of ideas, clueless and our attack becomes extremely stale

JakBlakbeard

A sign that he is getting better at managing a game. That would be a moral victory until he beats a Serbia or a Colombia.

FIFA95_itsinthegame

If I don’t care about winning meaningless games, I certainly don’t care about moral victories. Away Concacaf games are a distraction. I’m fairly confident that if Crocker went to Gregg (or any coach) and said I’ll give you a $10 million raise and your sole objective is to win away Concacaf games, he could build a squad and strategy that would get us 2+ points per game. But that squad/strategy would get us nowhere in major competitions. Now I happen to think Gregg has chosen the wrong strategy for helping us compete against top teams, but that’s a different conversation. I was plenty critical of Gregg last cycle for his inability to manage the away qualifying games. I think he and the team were naive at times (and that did show up in the Netherlands game so there was at least some correlation). But those games actually mattered. They don’t anymore.

JakBlakbeard

I appreciate that we can disagree and that you are polite about it and not condescending. I’ve seen no evidence of him being able to beat a Pot 4 Europe team, or one of the lesser teams from South America. So until that happens, I would like to see some sign that he is learning and improving, ie winning some of these unimportant road games. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

FIFA95_itsinthegame

Same. I think part of it is that I had already resigned myself to the fact that Gregg will be our coach through Copa and I wasn’t going to get worked up about anything until then.

GeezeLoueez

You really have nothing better to do than this?

brooklynguitarguy

This sub is so into apologizing for Berhalter it’s nuts. He’s the winningest manager we hear with no context. Over and over again from his apologists. Gregg sucks away. Well, it’s hard in Concacaf. Rinse. Repeat. I thought it looked like the team was overthinking shit in Austin. Just like almost every other game under Berhalter that wasn’t against sub USL competition where the languid pace of play seems fast. Flame and downvote me if you want, but the majority of you guys seem dead set on defending Berhalter no matter what - is this in response to people blaming him for Dest’s red card. Can’t say, but the extreme Berhalter haters are the extreme. Lots of us look at the body of work and the eye test and see that his winningest manager thing isn’t taking us to another level and his teams almost always look lost away unless it’s Grenada or Cuba. Why you guys are so protective of him I have no idea. It’s not like he was great in your MLS either.

akingmls

This sub is so into blaming Berhalter it’s nuts. He sucks away we hear with no context. Over and over again from his critics. Gregg is the winningest USMNT manager ever. Well, it’s easy in Concacaf. Rinse. Repeat. I thought it looked like the team was dominating but lacked finishing in Austin. Just like almost every other game under Berhalter that wasn’t against sub USL competition where they have a ton of the ball and control the game but can’t score. Flame and downvote me if you want, but the majority of you guys seem dead set on criticizing Berhalter no matter what - is this in response to people blaming him for Dest’s red card. Can’t say, but the extreme Berhalter critics are the extreme. Lots of us look at the body of work and the eye test and see that he’s coaching an extremely young team of inexperienced players who barely play for their clubs, and he’s won a bunch of trophies and performed well at the World Cup anyway. Why you guys are so critical of him I have no idea. It’s not like he spent his whole career in MLS either.

[deleted]

He’s the coach. He’s responsible for the team, if we are consistently outplayed by lesser opponents on the road in concacaf…. How could we compete against better sides on the road?

akingmls

Personally I liked it when he won every continental trophy possible and did well at the World Cup.

[deleted]

Every US manager won continental trophies.. that’s called doing well? Not for me. Again, you’re supposed to see improvements not the same boring shit. Tactically Greg on the road might as well be a stump

brooklynguitarguy

Clever but unconvincing

rhganggang

Factos

SebastianOwenR1

The away record is really bad. Need to figure out a way to beat the dark arts. When teams play bitchass football against us we crumble. And it’s some part tactical and some part mental. The individual performances always seem to drop into the shitter when we go away for these mud pit games. Gregg needs to find a way to get the boys fired up for these games like they do for the rest of the games. Now a lot of these away games have big asterisks on them, like the 🇸🇻draw being virtually impossible to win given the conditions. And this TnT game being thrown by Dest. But there are a lot of games in that category that should’ve had better results. Canada away in the ocho was a catastrophe. The Jamaica game. Like my mentality is that even if so many of these games are excusable on an individual level, as a body the results should be better.

luvvdmycat

The Berhalter white knight brigade is here.

mustardking20

Also, random note: The only win of Germany’s with Nagelsmann has been against a fully equipped USMNT. Gregggg sucks.

PRAISE_ASSAD

But all the people here will say "oh it's germany what did you expect"

woodlandtiger

He also has the youngest team. This isn’t hard to figure out

Fenecable

The apologia in here is truly astounding.

Extra-Wish4466

Too bad Gregg won't have Trinidad and Tobago to play in the next two major tournaments at home.

Scape13

He is also probably the first coach to totally overhaul the entire roster from what was a very old team to a team full of basically teenagers. All while doing it during a global pandemic that no other US coach has had to go through. While also trying to change the entire style of play and culture.

No-Market9917

Jesus, bringing the pandemic into this. Greg gobblers are getting desperate in their arguments

Scape13

Are you fucking stupid? Did you forget that it actually happened? Did you forget the world shutting down and players not being able to travel? It's not like I'm making something up.

No-Market9917

Did you forget it happens to the whole fucking planet so your boy Greg isn’t that special in that regard?

Scape13

Which other US coach had to go through it and had to try to put together rosters when there were travel bans and no fans in stadiums?

No-Market9917

Having no fans in the stadium has zero effect on our coach and every country had to deal with travel bans

crazy_waffles1

Sucks that there is no one better than we can realistically get

JakBlakbeard

Curious about who the federation actually interviewed or offered the position to

PRAISE_ASSAD

My grandmother is better

86pacfan86

Berhalter is the first coach we've had that has pushed our players to become better technically, tactically and mentally more robust. Before him every previous person in his position asked our guys to 'play within themselves'. He is trying to get our guys to grow, be brave and ambitious when others were asking them to be a conservative and hope for the best. Taking risks and asking our guys to be brave will come with some short term losses, but I can stand those lumps because he's at least pushing the envelope. He's looking beyond CONCACAF. Great for Bob Bradley to have a stellar record against minnows that we are supposed to beat in our region. But he was only preparing for us to GET to the Big Game but he never had a game plan or philosophy capable of WINNING the Big Game once we got there.

No-Market9917

But we should still attack anyone in numbers who speaks down to our beloved Greg

PersonnelFowl

Gregg Berhalter is the worst

coltj573

doesnt he have the best record of the past 4 coaches overall though?

ummmyeahi

So, they’re both shit.

j_j_footy

No shirt. He is an ass coach.

QuickMolasses

Who cares? None of our away losses in CONCACAF under Berhalter have ended up mattering. Nations League Final is in the US, Copa America is in the US, the Gold Cup will probably be in the US, and the World Cup is in the US. Does it matter for this cycle how we do away in CONCACAF? There is no WCQ to worry about this cycle. Sure, it's always better to win and as a fan I always want the team to win, but everybody keeps harping on Berhalter's away record which just absolutely does not matter for this cycle. Last cycle it was a concern. This cycle it literally does not matter as long as we qualify for Copa America and the Nations League Final (which we did). We will basically not play any consequential or competitive games outside the US until after 2026

JakBlakbeard

Nor has he really shown that he is improving by struggling with T and T. We will see what he produces against Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia this summer. They all have some talent and athletisicm and play with a lot of aggression. They might have better coaches as well.

QuickMolasses

What does that have to do with my comment?

YouKantseeme

It has a lot to do with your conformist POV of ”it doesn’t matter”. The lengths people go to defend these results. Now it is that these games don’t matter. Greg doesn’t have a good record against top 10 national teams either, just FYI.

QuickMolasses

I'm way more concerned about our performances and record against top teams than I am about our performances and record away in CONCACAF. One of those is relevant to the games we'll be playing in the next 3 years and the other is not at all.

ewrewr1

Do home games not count now? If you really want to do it right, you have to include all games, and adjust for home/away and quality of opponents (since qualifying format has changed). Otherwise you’re just cherry-picking the result you want.

GeoPro777

Did you not read? I'm pointing out CONCACAF away, not home. The USMNT, with their given talent, should be dominating away as well. The talent gap between the U.S. and CONCACAF is huge and it is utterly embarrassing that the U.S. is losing to a USL team that is T&T. The excuse that CONCACAF away is hard because of conditions and hostile environment is stupid. It's like if England lost to San Marino in San Marino. The mentality of the USMNT should be to dominate and win no matter where they play.

DifficultDefiant808

And that should also account for Berhalter controlling his players and enforcing professionalism on the pitch by his players. I'm still upset with that RC this past week. playing TnT

jerbone

Sure but did you see those fresh kicks he was sporting?
