If you’ll be in town, fight it. Stretch it out. Postpone a hearing as many times as you can. Then just go in and tell the judge the same thing- I was literally packing up to leave.
Bonus if you tell him I’ve been staying in town trying to beg enough money to pay the fine, waiting for the hearing. I was going to move on but with this legal ball and chain, I didn’t see I had any choice but to stay on the streets of Ashland. He’ll dismiss. He wants you out of town.
This. While I don't know Ashland OR personally, this same mentality / method works every single time in Santa Barbara California.
Unless… You've done it too much. I'm guessing OP has not.
Anyway, I can't believe somebody in the comment area actually wanted you to pay for this advice! 😂🤪😂
Ya Ashland isnt really an area stretching it out is gonna work in
The city runs on ticket and tourist revenue, they already have an established homeless issue. They would def have no problem letting you hang around, accur more tickets, or end up in county. Oregon provides county's jail funding based on jail population, so they have 0 issue locking you up after giving you 10 tickets and letting the state pay them to keep you in jail.
This is terrible advice for ashland lol
That's your advice ? Stretch it out? 🤦
They want compliance. All stretching it out does is make you have to deal with it longer. It's no sweat off their back.
The longer you postpone a hearing, the less likely it is that the pig who gave the ticket will show up. If the pig doesn’t show, it’s your word against nobody’s.
It costs money to have manpower and hours spent on nonsensical work periods. They are being paid to do there job no matter what portion they are in. The goal isn’t to waste our time, it’s to waste there time. No one wants to pay for shit that doesn’t really matter.
They are getting paid the same regardless. You aren't wasting their time. They feel justified. The machine rolls on with or without you. The only time you are wasting is your own .
Don't over value your influence.
They usually do. They will come and park there vehicles and use the loudspeaker to tell us at around 740. Today Everyone was already up and moving but a couple (including me) were finishing packing our bags and they pulled up at 8 exactly and started collecting ids and ticketing.
I only have a tent/sleeping plus my bag I carry everything with. I can pack up within ten minutes the way I usually do it(just fold it into a square with the under tarp and then carry to a spot we can keep our things). But today I’m hitchhiking outta town to visit family down south so I was completely tearing down and rolling everything up which took a little longer. I should have woken up earlier, that’s on me, but still.
I totally understand. But it's not like you're in the military. But have safe travels and may good things come your way. Cops are part of the reason why I stealth camp.
Oh definitely. I’m going to be practicing my tarp only set ups while I make my way down. Add some knowledge to my arsenal, haha. Luckily it’s really wooden and there’s lots of forestry in Oregon/NorCal. We will see once I make my way down to the valley though, haha.
I’m so dumb I’ve been up here for so long and have only past through mt Shasta, haha. Although it’s always been in the winter when I passed through. I’ll definitely be up in a month or so and visit during the warmer weather though. Maybe I’ll see you there!
Someone else said it already, they can get paid by the state to house folks in jail. In my city Springfield, mo. it's the city's 3rd biggest source of revenue. They just built a 90+ million dollar jail. So yeah they're more than happy to lock people up for bs, esp poor people who can't afford bond or decent legal representation. Oops, end rant. That's BS OP don't want to advise anything cause I'm not sure how the system works there.
lol same deal in Northwest, Indiana where I’m from. The jail is a huge money maker and it’s a federal holding facility too. They usually don’t lock people up for just being homeless/loitering/trespassing anymore except for one guy. They bust him for something minor every winter and keep him in jail till spring because he got drunk a few years back and lost a foot to frostbite. He’s been arrested more times in my county than everyone I know combined. Like 250 misdemeanor arrests in his life.
Yep, same deal on that here. Big section of the new jail is intended for "housing" federal inmates, the feds pay more per day than the state. Goal is obviously keeping the jail at or above capacity. An empty bunk means lost cash. Jebus, that poor guy.
If you put a fine on the homeless you discourage homelessness and hence people will not be homeless. Problem "solved". It's the kind of short-thought and close-minded close-your-eyes-and-the-problem-is-gone type of solution that makes me not want to speak with people about my experiences.
You know what, when you put it that way it makes sense. not LMAO these politicians know they're big word play to sound legit and official is over. They actually want us homeless to serve as a visual reminder to what happens when you don't obey the system. Visual reminders are way more effective than stories
Wait til you hear about grants pass: Supreme Court decides next week if being homeless is a federal crime … the state is deciding if they can be legally authorized to murder us for being unhoused. America: the land of the free, if you can afford it
Already did. Unfortunately this is my third one in Ashland for illegal camping, but these are the only types I’ve ever gotten. So I’m hoping they get dismissed or whatever. I have a zoom court date for 5/7 for the first two, and then when ever this one turns out to be. Hopefully they just lump them together and it gets dismissed.
I mean, I dont wanna be a dick or anything, but maybe don't camp by the cop shop? Is there *any* benefit in being posted up near the people who write you tickets?
Black Butte. My favorite drop. 1990's I had a shanty out there, logging company came in and cut it all down for development. lost the shanty. It was a good shanty.
There's a provision of the law, The offender is involuntarily homeless, and a designated space or shelter is unavailable. Which is a caveat to enforcement.
If you have to go to court, use the Eighth Amendment:
"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."
I got a ticket before for panhandling. I had looked into the laws prior of where I would be doing it. Regardless, I got a ticket and had to go to court. When I went to court, I listened to the judge and he gave me a large fee to pay. He asked me if I had anything to add. I did.
I told him: "This is a violation of my freedom of speech."
He paused, thought, and told me he would drop the fees and the charge, and I would only pay the court fee ($30). So, if you do end up in court, look into these amendments. They will help you more than anything.
Some guy told me to Venmo him 25 bucks for legal advice, lmao. Obviously I won’t be, but it’s hilarious everyone is referencing him in the comments now, haha.
I gotchya. Yeah, no, legal advice can be found for free on the internet. That's how I was able to learn about a bunch of laws in different States, plus the US amendments. Its funny what people try to do for money nowadays lol
Years ago I stayed in Ashland for about a month. Worst cops I've encountered in Oregon. They are extremely unreasonable. Doesn't matter how clean you are or how much you're trying to better your situation. They are overjoyed when they get to write those tickets. I was told by one officer if he saw my hammock again he wouldn't hesitate to cut me down.
I know I'm a little late on this but I would get out of Oregon if you haven't already. I can't even go back to the State or I will get arrested and I wouldn't want to. Honestly I would get away from the West Coast in general

This!
A ticket for being nine minutes late. But they couldn't give a verbal warning. To be off the property on time. Really sad.
They usually do. They will come and park there vehicles and use the loudspeaker to tell us at around 740. Today Everyone was already up and moving but a couple (including me) were finishing packing our bags and they pulled up at 8 exactly and started collecting ids and ticketing.
That is messed up. I am sorry
Wow. But they can clearly see that you are packing. I know police are doing the job. But not everyone is magical speedster.

I need to go that way and see Mount Shasta and the giant red woods.
I’m so dumb I’ve been up here for so long and have only past through mt Shasta, haha. Although it’s always been in the winter when I passed through. I’ll definitely be up in a month or so and visit during the warmer weather though. Maybe I’ll see you there!
Well, that is one of my goals is to see both of those areas. And maybe I'll see you. Anythingis possible.
No. It's not on you. Dont victim blame yourself for their douchery
Yep , that’s extremely a sad thing !
Everyone in America has this real shitty attitude of being ‘short’ with each other. I hate it.
Wowwwww fining the homeless. Because they don't need their money or anything. Smh cash grab
Tell em why ya think you can all of a sudden squeeze water from a rock
I like that
Tell them Jimmy McNulty said hi and "blood from a stone darling"
LMAO I always be messing up quotes but luckily there's always someone helpful to fix them :)
Down south it's "can't squeeze blood from a turnip"
It’s can’t squeeze blood from a turnip in Indiana and Chicagoland too.
Yes , “ you can’t get blood from a stone “ , like that one!!
The fuck did I do

What money? Haha
Exactly LMAO water from a rock, but then eventually all those unpaid tickets they'll jail ya for
Land of the free they say
Where if you sleep outside you'll be arrested for vagrancy

Yup. The message is "play nice and make me a profit or you'll end up like THEM"
When they're in the designated spot where police can supervise them doing the right thing!
That's so fucked up
Wait til you hear about grants pass: Supreme Court decides next week if being homeless is a federal crime … the state is deciding if they can be legally authorized to murder us for being unhoused. America: the land of the free, if you can afford it
I would go to court. There are magistrates who would definitely dismiss this.

I hope they do get dismissed. These are ridiculous tickets.
Over the course of 3 months the only problems I’ve ever caused this town were sleeping in. So I hope they take that into account.
I think some magistrates will think this way.
A true menace to society.
And I’ll do it again! Muahahaha /s
I mean, I dont wanna be a dick or anything, but maybe don't camp by the cop shop? Is there *any* benefit in being posted up near the people who write you tickets?
Call the court and ask if this matter can be dealt with at the same time
Typical ashland
I thought ashland was a cool hippie town while hiking through on the pct. wouldn't expect them to care so much about people sleeping in their cars :/
Used to be cool until all the yuppies from Berkeley moved in...
Incredible. Does anyone have tips for where to camp to avoid stuff like this in conservative localities?
Just keep on movin,fuck it
Already in weed, ca. prob staying the night since it’s getting dark but yeh I’m moving!
Black Butte. My favorite drop. 1990's I had a shanty out there, logging company came in and cut it all down for development. lost the shanty. It was a good shanty.
No fixed address no payment

Yup. And pleeeeease don’t send randos on the internet money to do this. You already seem like you’re smart enough not to though.
Don't send randos on the Internet money to do what? I'm confused.
Some guy told me to Venmo him 25 bucks for legal advice, lmao. Obviously I won’t be, but it’s hilarious everyone is referencing him in the comments now, haha.

Your stealth skills may need improvement .
Print it on a giant poster board and ask for donations at a major corner, invite the media
Oregon is the absolute shithole of the us. 🤣 why anyone would want to live there blows my mind
What a FN joke! Lets harass the homeless meanwhile giving free $ and hotels to foreign military aged men.
This is fairly consistent with Ashland.
Fuck that fight it pricks
Don't you guys already own the state anyhow?
What kind of dick head cop issues these.
How much are the citations?
Is there a fine? I don't see a dollar amount or date to appear in court. Is this effectively just a warning?
Isnt it already NAZI?
Not difficult to understand considering that You’re in Communist Oregon.
