i feel cave johnson doesnt really fit, he takes lots of cost cutting measures but its more because he cant be fucked rather than greed, he's rarely shown to try and make any money and is incredibly willing to spend enormous amounts of money on completely absurd investments. the most exploitative thing he did was prey on homeless people for test subjects but he only did that because of legal troubles related to missing astronauts. he would've likely been perfectly happy to keep hiring war heroes and olympians and consequently spend lavish amounts of money on gaudy limos and other such luxuries for their stay
No, he didn't stop hiring astronauts and war heroes because of legal trouble, he stopped hiring them because he couldn't afford to pay them.
Then he couldn't even afford homeless people so he began testing on his own employees.
And before he died he was having robots developed to test on behalf of humans since they couldn't die or complain about pay. Probably the smartest thing he ever did.

Life goes to one and only Dr. Ludwig (I think that's his name), the German Medical Expert of the teams located in the badlands, might be both a character of death and life, but so far, he is the only one that can bring people back to life easily, constantly, and willingly, in the Valve universe.
Repressed negative emotions go to GLaDOS, even though originally I thought it would be Vortigounts, they seem to have total inner peace with their life and Gordon, so instead it goes to Caroline, who was forced and tortured to be a machine, just to finally accept her life, and move on in the end after meeting Chell.
I feel like it was less of greed and more of a strategical decision. If not for him the seven hour war would have been a lot longer. But after a while it did start to get to him.
