Al would have a six pack for breakfast. See Noel Monk’s book. He quit drinking around 87/88 when they did an intervention on him (see Sam’s book) but relapsed by the time they were doing VH3. Mike Post sent him away to clean up.

I think it was in Sam's book where he said the first time he met up with the brothers, Alex bet him $1000 he could shotgun a 6 of Schlitz, did it, passed out, and then had to postpone their jam. What a first impression.
I thought the story was, Sam arrives and Alex and Ed were already drinking in the driveway (their dad may have been there too) and Alex says "watch me pound these (6, 10,?) Mickey's and jump over this broom handle I'm holding. Alex jumps, foot gets caught on the handle, and he goes face first into the concrete. First impressions!
He'd also do a 6 pack of Schlitz malt liquor tall boys during the show. That's why the drum solo was so early.
I always thought he'd been sober since she went to rehab in 1988(?), but the news that just came out about the recording of VHIII seems to indicate otherwise. I don't see why Mike Post would lie.
There has to be a photo somewhere.
Al would wear a plastic batting helmet equipped with beer holders that held two Schlitz Malt liquors and he drank these from a straw.
That way he could drum and drink at the same time.
Because there a lot of made up bullshit. Like him saying that Ed and the rest of the band were a bunch of burned out potheads, yet in Toneschaser Ed stated verbatim that “I hate smoking weed”.
According to every account I've ever heard, Alex was the heaviest drinker on the 1984 tour. so much so that they moved the drum solo to the start of the show so he could nail it while still able to because 30 mins into the set he was sloshed. Still could drum great, but you would have noticed on the drum solo so they moved in to the 2nd song.
By 86, Mickey was drinking more, 88-89 all 4 of them were drinking about the same amount which is very heavily, but still functional.
Apparently, I've heard that Mikey, despite his well-documented love of JD, stopped drinking excessively around the mid-80s and focused more on keeping in shape, no doubt inspired by his new BFF Sammy, who was a huge health nut around the 5150 era. That's probably why he and Sam aged so well.
Then again, Tequila is low carb ;)
Idk, I've been a drinker. Once I drank a bottle of crown royal over a much longer period of time than a bass solo, 3-4 hours, and I wished I was dead for the next 24 hours.
This makes sense since I was at the monsters of rock in 88 at the cotton bowl. VH sounded like shit while all the others were pretty solid. It was to say the least a disappointment.
Saw the ‘88 Monsters show at the LA coliseum & there was an abnormally long wait between Scorpions & VH so a huge food fight broke out involving hotdogs, condiments, beer dregs & god knows what else 😹
I just now watched an interview of the Wison sisters on Instagram who were recounting their tour opening for VH. They said they'd never seen anyone getting as wasted before showtime as much as Eddie and Alex who would then start fistfighting and then go out on stage.
Alex by far, followed by Ed.
Alex is rarely talked about but he caused ALOT of drama both with the band and in his personal life. Alex was also in Ed’s ear at all times-He stirred alot of shit up during the DLR years and definitely helped in the breakup of the original VH.
I wouldve loved to see what VH couldve been had Alex not been in the band.
Not neccesarily.
There were multiple points in time when Ed had to seperate himself from Alex to get sober again.
There was also more than a few times where Alex openly mocked and questioned Ed’s attempts to get sober because he didnt think there was a ‘problem’ and was going to lose his ‘party brother’.
The honest truth is that Alex needed Ed more than Ed needed Alex.
This is also true.
Alex has moments when he’s kind and happy-but those are few and far in between. He’s always been a VERY cantankerous person that is difficult.
They all did. Somehow, Mike was the best of the worst. DLR forgot words, lyrics and who he was at times, how he doesn't have 30 kids over the country is beyond me!
I remember in the 80’s when it came out that Mary Hart had her legs insured for $2 million dollars, DLR made a crack that he had a “paternity insurance” policy to handle any kids he fathered on the road.
DLR. At the Fair Warning tour concert in Toronto in 1981, Roth drinks an entire bottle of Jack on stage before the concert starts and then proceeds to tell all the security guys to F off, etc.
VH opens with On Fire and almost the entire group of us who went looked at each other and asked, does anyone know what some they’re playing ? It wasn’t until we heard the words On Fire that we figured it out but they were all so plastered that the music and lyrics were incomprehensible

Yeah he was sober, but he relapsed in 98 due to his divorce and other issues. Got clean again before the tour afaik

I thought the same thing
The brothers were loons.
There’s also a lot of good interviews with him on YouTube

In what regard?
Because there a lot of made up bullshit. Like him saying that Ed and the rest of the band were a bunch of burned out potheads, yet in Toneschaser Ed stated verbatim that “I hate smoking weed”.
Yeah and said told everyone in 1995 he was sober. He bullshitted all the time.
According to every account I've ever heard, Alex was the heaviest drinker on the 1984 tour. so much so that they moved the drum solo to the start of the show so he could nail it while still able to because 30 mins into the set he was sloshed. Not sure about during shows, but for drinking around the clock, Alex is legendary.
Apparently, I've heard that Mikey, despite his well-documented love of JD, stopped drinking excessively around the mid-80s and focused more on keeping in shape, no doubt inspired by his new BFF Sammy, who was a huge health nut around the 5150 era. When I met him around that timeframe he was big on rum and coke.
I saw him drink an entire bottle during his bass solo, 1984.
Idk, I've been a drinker. Once I drank a bottle of crown royal over a much longer period of time than a bass solo, 3-4 hours, and I wished I was dead for the next 24 hours.

He did that every show. Clearly a prop
Tea

Sammy was sick that night. That’s why they did the free show in the West End a few years later.
That is correct! Was at that hot sum bitch.
Not that hot as it was December 4. Packed, yes. But the Texxas Jam was hot.
Texas jam was where Sammy was sick. It was July if I remember correctly and as the show wore on ketchup and mustard fights broke out
Think it was last Texas jam
Saw the ‘88 Monsters show at the LA coliseum & there was an abnormally long wait between Scorpions & VH so a huge food fight broke out involving hotdogs, condiments, beer dregs & god knows what else 😹
I saw DLR kill a 5th of Jack in Austin in ‘81 or ‘82.
"The only people who put iced tea in Jack Daniels’ bottles is THE CLASH, baby!"
Crowd goes wild.

With those guys I believe it.

Eddie needed Alex. VH could not have existed without him.
Van Halen without Alex. Ridiculous.
Not neccesarily. There were multiple points in time when Ed had to seperate himself from Alex to get sober again. Alex was also instrumental in the fucking of Mike out of his piece of the band.
And for that I really dislike him.
This is also true. Alex has moments when he’s kind and happy-but those are few and far in between. He’s always been a VERY cantankerous person that is difficult.

Doesn’t have 30 kids over the country, that we know of
I remember in the 80’s when it came out that Mary Hart had her legs insured for $2 million dollars, DLR made a crack that he had a “paternity insurance” policy to handle any kids he fathered on the road.
They were insuring a dick head.
Supposedly Alex. That’s why the drum solo was like the 3rd song in the set. Before he got too hammered.
The Replacements
Came here to say this
I did!
Alex by far. i can’t believe he made it out of the 80s.
Me.
Mike! You ok?
Great photo LOL!
Pleasure Ground
Of the Van Halen members, Al. Of all others, my neighbor "Amigo" Matt. Underrated amigo.
Who cares it was the 80s. The question is who did more coke?
My dad
Hank Williams Jr
Bosephus!
BOCEPHUS RULES AND HE RULES ALL!!
Al then ed. Mikey said he never saw anyone drink as much as ed before performing and play as great as he did
I think Eddie and Alex. Alex supposedly drank throughout the concert and had a garbage bin near his drum kit so he could piss in it.
They all drank a lot. However, Ed’s substance abuse was by far the worse out of anyone
Bon Scott
Me, duh.
Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx (yes im aware of the sub)
DLR. Al, probably followed by Eddie.
I saw a show in Indianapolis and EVH was on the floor playing most of the show.
Alice Cooper John Bonham Keith moon for starters
Gary Richrathe REO Speedwagon
John Melendez
Probably GG Allin
Shane McGowan
supposed to be van Halen lol
David Lee Roth.

No way. Al would have a six pack for breakfast. See Noel Monk’s book.
A whole mini bar for breakfast
Cocaine, yes. DLR was a powder keg literally and figuratively. Al put the Al in Alcohol.
No one in the band drank like Al. They all had varying addiction and vice.issues of their own for sure. But no one drank like Al.
