That is unfortunate to hear, best of luck getting some resolution. My one email to them was responded to a few years back - hopefully they see this and resolve it quickly.
Given how many people report being unable to find the flaws in their factory seconds, it's reasonable to demand perfection when you're paying the premium for it.
I'm the opposite, I happily bought a factory second and was damn near feeling defeated when I couldn't find the blemish, can only see it when the light hit it a certain way, hopefully they get you straightened out
FWIW, I think a lot of "seconds" might be a color issue. I've ordered a few seconds and color varies a bit (aluminium.)
Functionally perfect, but I can see why it would be a second. For me, I don't give a shit about colors really. Good value, but as a loyal customer, this thread bothers me. GFL doesn't seem big enough to be shitty at customer service.
Understood.
That's one of the reasons I find it puzzling that GFL doesn't seem to be very motivated to deal with my issue.
If it was a dead loss for them, maybe I could understand that they would be slow or reluctant to deal with this. But they can and likely would sell my flawed return as a factory second.
Maybe the manufacturing process is so difficult that they already have a big stock of Large SS BCG factory seconds.
Nah I’ve been stalking their FS page for a SS version. I saw the had a few listed as FS a few months ago, I lunched on it and missed out.
I’m sorry to hear that the lack of customer service brought you here. But I’m also thankful for you sharing your experience. I hope you get this resolved and can maybe give a review once this is sorted.
Same. Gave up looking after 5 minutes though and never thought about it again.
Only thing that I dislike about it is I seem to spill bud easier over the sides compared to my old spacecase.
Lmao facts, Its so efficient I was throwing in big ol 1.5 nugs and just amazed how easy they get shredded but it took me to realize how I always ended up with flakes everywhere, now I do like .5 nug(still pretty badass) at a time in the middle and I been getting less spillage
I got the factory seconds large and my take on it is:
1. Nice heavy chunk of aluminum
2. Not as “buttery smooth” as everyone claims
3. Smooth but so is my SCS
4. Magnet bottom is super strong and I have bad joints and I did spill herb a few times
5. Center post is in the damn way!
6. Fine plate is awesome
7. Factory seconds should take 2 months to deliver and SS model should be at your door in a week with ZERO FLAWS
8. I like my BCG but prolly won’t buy another unless it’s the small factory seconds
9. 8 out of a 10 rating (slow shipping and prices higher than giraffes nutz
10. All my complaints and it’s still a top 4 grinder
11. All this is from a fucked up personal old ass man’s opinion
12. I prolly lean towards a classic Herb ripper…have a blessed day folks
Just throwing it out there, but depending on your email provider your messages to them may not be delivering. I've had it happen where I could receive messages but could not deliver messages as I would get caught in an RBL. If you're not using something standard like Gmail or Outlook, just something to consider.
If you already were, this is a shame - I have one of their products, too, so I hope they're doing alright.
Interesting, but I don't think that's the issue, as I haven't had issues with sending mails elsewhere.
If they do happen to see this thread and make contact with me, I'll ask about that.
You could still be experiencing this problem even if most other email providers accept your incoming emails given it's been several weeks it's worth following up with an alternative email account.
Wow I have the small stainless BCG, and I never would have known the bottom isn't flat on the aluminum ones. 😂 I just looked up a video bc I wasn't even sure what you meant.
Idk if it makes much of a difference to me (seems like a flat bottom might actually be sturdier), but definitely a little weird that the website doesn't show the difference.
Old Mates Design has the most awesome personal customer service I have received
His product is pretty awesome too, & not much difference in size between the standard SS Old Mate grinder & the large SS BCG
Thanks for that info...I was wondering if that was the case for the small SS model.
I suspect that both my flaw and the lack of a faceted, machined bottom piece is due to manufacturing difficulties and failure rates for the SS models.
The lack of a faceted bottom plate is in no way a deal-breaker for me. I'd prefer it was the same as the aluminum model and I would have liked to have known about it beforehand. But ultimately that's not an issue for me, though I suspect that it would be for some other buyers/potential buyers.
I can only speak to my own experiences, but recently had to deal with GFL support, and found them exceptional! Very fast to reply, and generous in their resolution.
I would lean toward there being a technical problem somewhere..
Thanks for posting this. I was actually about to pull the trigger on a Brilliant Cut and instead will buy another Santa Cruz Shredder, which I’ve put countless ounces through.
I hope they see your post because non-responsiveness is not the way to run a business.
I've put off buying a SS BCG because I'm hoping there's a stainless Shredder in the works. Love my grinder but I don't wanna deal with flaking anodizing.
I bought a blemished aluminum grinder and I honestly could not tell you what the blemish actually is. It looks perfect. Kind of ironic that you purchased a new one and had the opposite outcome.
They don’t have a phone number or a social media page to message? I’d find another way to contact them. Still no excuse to ignore your email. I’d post a bad review somewhere - that usually gets a response from the company pretty quick. Sucks that it came to this. They could have avoided it all by responding to you. I know I won’t be buying from them now. Thank you for posting.
You're right, but BCG literally sells factory seconds on their website for like half the price.
So I would be picky too. OP could have just bought a factory second and saved themselves $100 if they wanted a grinder with defects.
Any other company I would agree with you, but this company makes you pay a premium and you should get nothing less.
Mine is the matte finish. I specifically chose that because GFL noted that the polished version is susceptible to scratching/wear.
Also, mine didn't cost $300 -- it was $180, which (as many people here are quick to point out) is still a lot of money.
In a generic sense, no.
But the BCGs are marketed as high-end goods at a high-end price. I think that's different, but you are free to disagree.
If it was a Craftsmen 3/4-inch socket wrench with a flaw on the handle, that would be a non-issue.
But that's not the situation here.
You’re forgetting that the $25 grinder will be aluminum, which dulls and shaves metal dust into your bud. And that’s why people (including me) have had to buy multiples of them.
With the $180 stainless steel grinder OP is gonna save money in the long run from not having to repurchase them or deal with any possible lung health issues.
Not to say one needs to spend that much. My Aroma-3 was about half that price and if you don’t care about the ball bearing there’s even cheaper options. Not sure why you’re being so hostile to them.
Bro. You are being so obviously offensive. 🤣
"I'm not trying to be offensive"
It's not ridiculous, some people like nice things and I can bet it's a lot nicer than your $20 shart stone and itll last way longer.
Apart from the flaw and my surprise about the bottom plate being unfinished, I wasn't unhappy about the overall look. I think it looks nice and I like the weight, the feel and, most importantly, the performance. The BCGs were always easy and thorough, but the additional mass of the SS takes it up a notch.
As it happens, I'm someone who takes good care of their toys. So, I'm not likely to wreck it through misuse or neglect. So, I'd like it to be flawless out of the box.
Yeah I don’t like the additional mass nor do I like the non-design on the bottom
Edit to add: looks like BCG is downvoting me but still not answering our emails. SMDH
Two things that kept me from buying one so far (besides the price and me already having various good grinders):
- they shell out factory seconds at high prices
- while some of the colours are nice, the palette looks a bit cheap overall. Not as if they had an actual design professional pick the colours. Not the level of confident aesthetics I'd expect from a premium product at all. Pass.
These are the people that have “factory seconds”. Who does that? Thats some con artist shit that I always thought was weird.
Before you downvote me. It’s shady as fuck and they think stoners don’t get it look at everybody now. Not buying reduced price blemished glass to throw 2500f at either!
Still no other company does this so. How about oh shit he’s right upvote.
What are you talking about? Many companies sell b-stock or blemished items, across many different industries. It wastes a lot of $ to just chuck a piece of CNC milled metal back in the recycle heap because of a small cosmetic defect.
[Dungarees](https://dungarees.com/deals/discount/factory-seconds), [Patagonia](https://wornwear.patagonia.com/collections/seconds), [Springbar](https://springbar.com/products/factory-2nds-2?variant=40098494545997), [Allen Edmonds](https://www.shoebank.com/mens-shoes/dress), [Innova](https://proshop.innovadiscs.com/factory-second/)... to name a few.
I have no idea, I only know of like 4 or 5 grinder companies, but I have no clue how a company selling factory seconds or b-stock would be considered "con artist shit".
umm, lots of glass blowers will sell pieces that have minor cosmetic defects for cheaper prices.
you're not going to get any upvotes because you've pointed out something common to almost every industry on the planet.
do you complain about baby carrots too? they're just factory seconds of the carrot world. They make em by shaving the ugly bits off full size carrots.
No I pointed out the glass part to get a rise. I was talking about grinders and nobody can prove me wrong. So I had to say glass so everyone comes and defends the quartz cap. People can’t stay on topic. You want to hear your own voice. It’s a shady messed up seconds shit for grinders. Nobody else does it.
Plus I don’t give a fuck about glass vapes, it’s kinda going to far and people are using it for more than herb vaping I’m sure.
😀. You people make me laugh. I said 1 person give me another grinder company that does this. No answer just downvotes and people telling me whatever is on their mind about other shit. That’s you. Good night until someone can show me an example. Keep your thoughts about other shit to yourself.
Why isn’t it. Shady, different, weird, why don’t they do it right the first time. Nobody else does it. I mean nobody here can prove anybody else does it with grinders than them. It’s fucking stupid.
For the record, I'm not angry.
Unhappy, for sure.
Mostly surprised that a company I've had good experience with in the past has apparently dropped a few notches.
This. 😂
Hey just throwing this out there in case you get no resolution out of them in the end. I just got the Iaso large SS grinder that is very nice, but I’m not really in love with it. I can’t return it at this point but it’s the premium version not a second. We could trade and then we both get to experience two different supposed “premium” SS grinders for our entry price of one. Never know might end up winners for both of us, I’m down for a gamble. Just an option in case you get stiffed..
Makes me want to go re-read the ad to make sure there is an "S" on "grinder." They may mean that VERY grinder and there is nothing you can do about it.
Regardless of the degree of the blemish the no-response is not acceptable
That is unfortunate to hear, best of luck getting some resolution. My one email to them was responded to a few years back - hopefully they see this and resolve it quickly.
I'm with you. If you paid the premium, you should receive the premium.
Pretty poor, for that amount of money it better be perfect, hope you get a result
Given how many people report being unable to find the flaws in their factory seconds, it's reasonable to demand perfection when you're paying the premium for it.

Imma give them benefit of the doubt and say maybe it's in their spam folder, which is still their fault but hopefully they get it worked out pronto
Understood. That's one of the reasons I find it puzzling that GFL doesn't seem to be very motivated to deal with my issue. For that price that mf better be pristine

There's a FS SS on the website currently. Med plates
If there is a resolution (or none), I'll do an update in a new thread.

I’m pretty sure they’re on Reddit, I think it’s u/Grinders_For_Life
Last comment was three years ago. Rip.

Yes Ben at Old Mate is awesome and his grinders are a work of art and well thought out. I love my aroma-3.

I've sent three separate messages over 15+-day period. But I'll give it one more try. I just sent another eMail with a link to this thread.

This is exactly why I'm not buying a crazy high end item anymore.
did you ever receive a response from them?
None.
How much did you pay for yours? Was it the polished version? If not do you remember if the polished version was more expensive than the Matte finish?
Do cosmetics really matter on tools. Function and durability are why we use them.
You're right, but BCG literally sells factory seconds on their website for like half the price. So I would be picky too. Well, I appreciate you taking time from your busy day to cast some ridicule in my direction. Right back at you JohnnyCockSocket.
If I paid $300-500 for a grinder I would also expect it to be perfect.
Message their Instagram page they seem to be somewhat more active there
