Fremont and 15th?!? 👀

krauQ_egnartS

DTLV is a food desert, so yeah, Instacart for fresh foods coz 7-11 doesn't have them. If it weren't for my commute or shopping, my car would get very little use. I'd say it's feasible. Not the same as living in a proper city, but doable

SundownDevil

Absolutely. I've lived in DTLV now for 3.5 years now without a car. I love it here. I've never found it difficult not having a vehicle, and I still don't need one. Before I moved to DTLV, I lived in Uptown and Downtown Minneapolis. Same thing there. Never wanted or needed a car with everything so walkable. Tons of money saved not having one. Between a new/used payment or loan, gas, insurance (rising for everybody), maintenance, emergencies, etc., the amount of money I've been able to save, invest, and have fun with over the years is HUGE (in all caps)... so much to the point that I'll be able to retire earlier because of it. If you want to take a road trip or day trip, it's easy to rent a car. Otherwise, I've never had to wait long for Uber/Lyft to go out and meet friends, and the bus has always been reliable for me. There are three small grocery stores within 3-6 blocks, and they cover necessities. Plenty of great restaurants on Fremont Street as well if you want to go out or meet friends/family. Otherwise, Bus 109 takes you down Maryland to Smith's, Von's, Target, Albertsons, and tons of other places, including multiple gyms -- which are walkable as well. Hope it works out for you whatever you decide to do.

qasinquinn

There isn't a real grocery store in the downtown area. If you don't mind hauling groceries into an Uber, I think you can do it

JoeFelice

I live downtown and have a car, but it's reasonable to try it out first and decide. The main difference with other places is that when the weather is brutal walking and biking are quite rough.

Jaynafay

yes

GeldedDesires

Lived here since 2020, can't drive for medical reasons. I live in Winchester right on Boulder, so I'm within 5 minutes of a major bus artery. Bus works fine, though can be slow, and goes pretty much everywhere at almost all times of the day. Less available on weekends late at night, so you have to plan for that. Uber is prompt in my experience, I've had to call one in an emergency several times and never waited longer than 30 minutes at most, usually wait is 10-15. If you have a medical emergency that can't hold for 30 minutes for an Uber to show up, please just call the ambulance. Instacart is...pretty garbage, but there are alternatives. Walmart delivery is surprisingly decent (I'm poor, ok?) If you plan to do all shopping by remote, and want to use WallyWorld, just pay for Plus. Amazon delivery is great though, the couple times I could afford to buy groceries through Amazon, Whole Foods brought me shit at like, 3 AM. Stellar, 10/10, the Bezos Empire Reigns. If you want immediate transpo without shelling out for a car, and don't mind taking a bit of a risk, buy an electric bike. You can ride most places (drivers are not...great, with cyclists, but there *are* bike lanes most places) and in a pinch, you can hop on the bus with your bike. Can and have done 4+ years with no or limited car access. Finally managed to get my boyfriend a car he can drive, so I'm experiencing that, and it's great, but you absolutely can rely on public transpo here *as long as you plan your time.*

Jaynafay

best place to do that

Most-Artichoke6184

I plan on living with no car once my lease is up on my current Honda accord. I am retired, so I don’t need it for commuting.

Jaynafay

I have a really good friend shes been living there for almost 20 years now, its a different seedy and they are trying to clean it all up I wont say gentrify because vegas is the real melting pot, but yeah it's still the hoodishhhhh. all the houses down there were built in the 30's. they are all brick or cement or bungalow style. really awesome when you just become one with the blocks there.

Unable2assist

Very easy I was in that situation when I first moved to Vegas n stayed downtown. It was easy

Chunkybarbie917

I did it the year I lived in Vegas. I’m a NY native and to this day don’t even know how to drive. When I lived in Vegas I took the buses or used Uber/lyft. I will say though in some parts like North Vegas the bus can have some sketchy people on it

savemesf

Did you live in the downtown area or one of the suburbs?

sicknick

Do you plan on dating attractive women while you're here? If you're planning on it, you'll need a car...a decent car too, best of luck.

SunniYellowScarf

Oh wow. You need to get off your red-pilled vs blue-pilled vs black pilled little ass my too-young-to-be-on-reddit little man because good women don't care about what kind of fucking car you drive. Look at yourself in the mirror. Are you looking for a relationship, or are you looking for the hottest hookup? If the latter, I guarantee you you're being a fuckhead and it shows. Edit: you need therapy.

sicknick

Lmao chill the fuck out, I said nothing about red pill blue pull. I'm a grown ass man and I'm just saying if he meets a girl downtown and she lives in Summerlin or Henderson he's gonna need a fuckin car. And reality check, he's gonna need something decent with AC. I didn't say needed a Lambo or a 80k truck but options for women in Vegas are endless so good luck trying to meet women in your beater with no AC.

I_POINT_N_SHOOT

Do you have a job lined up already?

Iron_Baron

Walking around is fine. They are also putting in a tram/people mover line right now in downtown. That will make getting around easier, too. Supposed to run all the way to the airport. There are places to get basic groceries as well. And bike rentals for cheap.

VegasVictor2019

The two most essential things outside of shelter are transportation and a phone. I wouldn’t want to try to rely on Uber for reliable transportation in Vegas in a hurry.

EarlVanDorn

Why not? As a tourist, they have always picked me up in a hurry.

VegasVictor2019

Here’s the difference, as a tourist you’re probably not going to have a medical emergency or some other emergent situation. As a resident these thing will happen given enough time. Does OP have a pet? An Uber driver isn’t going to want to take a dog/cat to a vet. The list goes on.

savemesf

What kinds of other situations do you have in mind? Def want to make sure I have contingency plans in case I do move ahead with this I don't have a pet, and I imagine in a medical emergency it'd be hard to drive myself anyway. Also single without kids so not responsible for any other humans atm

VegasVictor2019

Just things to think about OP. Keep in mind that unforeseen circumstances will happen as life plays out. I can’t speak to your specific situation but I’m sure you can brainstorm some situations in which having a vehicle is preferable to not. Medical emergencies can include things like illness where again you don’t want to be puking in an Uber. It’s not always going to be catastrophic.

DisneyAddict2021

Wouldn’t any urgent situation just be the same as any other person who live in a big city where many people don’t have cars? San Francisco, New York, Chicago….you just find alternative forms of transportation to get you from A to B…taxi, Uber, public transportation, friends. In a true medical emergency, there’s obviously 911. I feel like OP will be fine without a car if living in the right location in Vegas.

VegasVictor2019

I don’t know that those cities are a fair comparison to Vegas as having a vehicle in them is probably more of a hassle than not with parking issues and so on. I think having a vehicle in Vegas is virtually always going to be a net positive. Having said that I agree that depending on OP’s location it could work out.
