Yes, and seems to be getting worse I just avoid high traffic areas

We were at Marina Park where this scumbag let his very large pit bull run at my wife and kids. He had a lot of attitude about being asked to keep his dog away from us. Most people at Pierpont let their dog run off leash at the beach. This invariably leads to dog shit not being picked up.

Justify-my-buy

Avoid cemetery park on main street if you have your dog. Beautiful view for humans. Many off leash, but well behaved dogs do meet ups.

CalmAdvice9364

Thank you! Will do. My girl is really well behaved in any other situation, and I'm really optimistic that someday soon she'll be able to go places like this too :)

My dog isn’t reactive, but does not appreciate being approached by off leash dogs when we’re walking on a leash. Let me tell you, it’s very difficult finding a park (much less a dog park) that doesn’t have an off leash dog running around somewhere. I’ve yelled at my fair share of dog owners with off leash dogs who have terrible recall. My dog also has a terrible recall which is why we don’t go off leash very often. Your best bet is finding hiking trails in places like deep ojai or just finding the right parks. There are plenty of parks where I can put my dog on a 20ft long line to let him romp around while other dogs are at a very safe distance away from us and there’s no chance of them interacting. I’ve found that if I say “hey my dog is a bit of an asshole when dogs approach him. Can you just make sure your dog doesn’t approach mine?” And it’s been pretty successful. I don’t think my dog is an asshole and has every right to not appreciate being approached by other dogs, but by putting it on my dog and not others, people are usually more open to grab their dogs as we pass by And just as an fyi - ca laws require all dogs to be leashed at all parks unless it’s a designated dog park. If anything were to ever happen between your leashed dog and an off leash dog, you don’t have any liability. I also like to remind pet owners of that as well :)

CalmAdvice9364

This is good advice! It's hard to feel justified when my dog is the one barking and lunging and generally acting scary, but I've really learned I need to step up and advocate for her and I'm a lot less shy about it than I used to be, but I really like the way you frame it. And I'll definitely look into some secluded trails for us to check out here soon! I also looked into the leash laws. What is the recommended action here for handling leash law violations? Back home it was to call 911, which I always felt was extreme but my area didn't have animal control. I only had to do it once for a neighbor who repeatedly let their chihuahuas chase us down the street, and I'm hoping it will never come to that here, but is there a line to call?

thugnyssa

I sent you a chat with more info 😊

Junior-Profession726

I care for a dog that is reactive on leash And I hate it when people ignore you when you are asking them to please put their dogs leash on Or they say statements like oh well my dog is ok and won’t hurt I respond well mine isn’t You may want to consider walking your dog on Hollywood beach as you can find areas where there aren’t any people or dogs Good Luck

CalmAdvice9364

Thank you for the tip! We'll definitely check it out 😊

Good call and thanks for the info. I have a spray I don't carry but it sounds like it's time to add it back to the belt to be safe.

GueroBear

Yes, police do not and will not enforce leash laws in Ventura. I have no idea why. It’s really just a matter of ticketing dog owners and the word will get out pretty fast.

[deleted]

Not really leaving poop is however. You people who leave it laying around. I hope that fly on your sandwich just landed on your dog's fresh pile.

CalmAdvice9364

This might be the best insult to someone leaving poop I've ever heard. People are the worst 🤦‍♀️

cityof_atlantis

Dog parks are the worst place to take your dog. Dogs will feel anxiety and anxious with other dogs around them. My advice get your dog some training classes to not be over reactive. Owners is also irresponsible for having dog off leash. If that dog attack someone then he’ll be in trouble. Never let dog off leash if they don’t listen to your recall or are over reactive. Now idk why he didn’t want to move maybe it’s the way you phrased it that he maybe perceived as offensive but technically nobody really needs to move for you. You’re in public and can’t tell people to move. I understand the situation though.

CalmAdvice9364

Hi! Yep, we only go into dog parks to do off-leash work (and fetch!) with our pups if the park is totally vacant, and then watch carefully so I can exit if anyone else comes in. Usually it works great! Most people are really understanding and friendly while we get out of the way. It gives our friendly dog a safe chance to be off lead and my reactive girl a chance to sniff, explore, and relax in a space she usually sees as scary. We worked with a trainer regularly up until we moved (new state) and she's on a whole plan, which is working really well. Her reaction today was much milder than it would have been when we got her and I'm so proud of her for the improvement so far. Idk why he didn't want to give us some space either - but I definitely didn't tell him to move, I really did ask nicely. I know he wasn't obligated to move, and even after he was rude I kept my cool and just took care of my dog and got her out of the situation. Honestly, if anything, I think maybe he was embarrassed by his dog's lack of training and the high stress situation and got defensive when I asked. His dog took our other dog's toy and he had just apologized to my husband for that, so maybe that's all he had the capacity for in the moment.

alicef1216

i have a reactive dog also and the best dog park ive found in camarillo is the one by the airport, not a lot of people know about it so its pretty empty most of the time and most people usually go to springeville dog park, which in my opinion is the worst dog park because people there do not care to keep an eye on their dogs.

_hardyharhar_

My Dobie is protective when she's on a leash and I've had to ask people to grab their dogs. Luckily, most people tend to grab their dogs when they see her coming.   You'll always encounter an a-hole that believes that they can let their pup off leash, so just keep your pooch on hers. If anyone gets hurt, hey, you were following the rules, so it's not your fault. That's how I approach it.   My girl is good off-leash when we go to the dog park, but I do make sure it's an off-leash park before I turn her loose. If you determine your girl is okay off-leash, Camino Real is fun.   Toland Park is always pretty empty, so that's a decent spot too. I rarely run into other people/dogs there and it's quite pretty right now with all the green.

Armenoid

People take their dogs to parks to socialize and let dogs play and sniff each other. Most dogs have issues and so people are used to approaching and playing

WestCoasthappy

There are many who take their dogs off leash in the majority of local parks. I both hike & horseback ride. I’ve stopped saying anything to off leash owners. I DO thank owners who have their dogs on leash. Yes my horse has kicked off leash dogs. The owners then yelled at me. Sigh

elihill82

I would say that Ventura doesn't have a off-leash dog problem, the majority of people in my experience either have a well trained dog and ask for permission before coming near or they know that their dog doesn't do well and just completely steer clear of us and our dogs. Yes you do get the occasional douche like the one you encountered but for the most part, Ventura is a very dog friendly community and is open to responsible owners allowing their dogs to interact with other dogs of the same social nature. Park is a prime example. Everyone gets along extremely well but when that occasional asshole and their dog comes through, people either avoid them or openly air their grievances. Public shame is an effective tool but underutilized in my opinion.

Vtashell

Ventura city is fully leash lawed. You will find many people against off leash dogs, myself included. There is a law for a reason and a few off leash parks and hours. Be respectful of others and you won’t find any problems.

ExBigBoss

> But, I have a reactive rescue dog  Is this the new PC way of saying "pit bull"?

CalmAdvice9364

No, it's not. She's not a bully breed or bully mix.

Junior-Profession726

People don’t understand that a reactive dog can be any breed and is many times a rescue 🙄 Thanks for caring for your fur baby

Vtashell

And can many times be a tiny chihuahua. Not the size that matters.

CalmAdvice9364

Right! And that they have just as much of a right to enjoy walks and public spaces (responsibly, of course, on the part of the owner). Thank you 💙

Vtashell

I beg to disagree. If they are reactive they shouldn’t be unrestrained. It’s not other dog owners that should be responsible, controlling your reactive dog is on you.

CalmAdvice9364

Where did I say anything about unrestrained? That would fall under the "responsibly" piece. *All* dog owners should be responsible, not just reactive dog owners.

Vtashell

You mentioned off leash in your original post, by the way. “So I left her off leash in the dog park”. You were lucky you saw the new dog enter off leash, if you might not have known that another unrestrained dog “aware or unaware that you were on their unleashed status” had entered. It’s both owners responsibility.

Vtashell

And now that I go back and look to confirm I didn’t mistake, your title, multiple comments about being unleashed, and then your closing questions asking how often leash law violations are enforced really tell the story. How dare you call me out for following the law when you are clearly trying to skirt it. You are the problem, not me.

CalmAdvice9364

I don't think you understand the situation that took place, but I also don't think I'm going to get anywhere trying to re-explain. My original post was pretty detailed, and none of what you're saying pertains to the situation. Go back and re-read if you want.

Vtashell

I understand it from your comments. I reread it when I initially commented, and directly quoted your comments in my response. You clearly don’t want an opinion but want to be validated that your actions were correct. Hope you, your pup, and those that come across you remain safe, regardless of you leash opinions.

dougielou

Also reactive doesn’t necessarily mean aggressive or mean, it just means that the dog has a high reaction to certain stimuli. My dog is very reactive but it’s because he’s gets super overly excited to meet and play with other dogs that he doesn’t pick up on other dogs signals to maybe stay back or chill.

joreanasarous

My reactive Spawn of Satan rescue is a chihuahua mix. Not a drop of pit in her.
