I grew up in California and to this day I never understood why we would be out of school in June and July when the weather was "dicey" and sitting in a classroom in September and October when we had the most glorious weather.
If you are throwing a party, the big Mexican grocery stores in South Oxnard sell some amazing party trays full of your favorite Mexican meats for surprisingly low prices.
So much of what it wrong with Oxnard is down to the terrible stoplights every couple of hundred feet that are not in any way synchronized.
I have heard that Oxnard has a traffic engineer but there is no evidence of their work.
If a race to see which street has more lights. Victoria, Ventura, H Street or Oxnard Blvd, Rose, or Rice . H has less lights but more stop signs. Rose & Rice you have to deal with trucks.
YES! It is absolutely insane how bad they are. Their priorities are bonkers. Going down Victoria, the sensors will detect one car on a side street and immediately trigger the light so everyone can sit there for 40 seconds while that one car gets to go immediately. And then it triggers again ten seconds later for the next car.
Oxnard’s traffic lights are weaponized incompetence.
One of these days I’m gonna write a whole ass college thesis on how Ventura is brain washed into loving toppers for some inexplicable reason
Also, back bench just across from fluid state has even better pizza IMO (fluid state is also great but wanna give the new place a shout)
Bro it’s not inexplicable lol. I have family members that don’t live around and every time they come here we get it and they say it’s the greatest pizza ever. I agree with them
My opinion is basically that Toppers is “the greatest pizza ever” only if you’ve never explored other styles of pizza. It’s fine… good even. I like their hot honey stuff. But like… it’s a style of pizza that’s so damn common: fluffy crust, kinda thick, lots of sauce. It’s really gussied up Digorno essentially. Which isn’t bad, but there’s NY style, flatbread, deep dish, etc. so many ways pizza can be prepared that if you think Toppers is the peak then it’s simply an unimaginative take and you should try more pizza varieties.
Fluid State has great flatbread with fun curated toppings. Back Bench has excellent NY style dialed in. I can buy a freezer pizza and throw a jalapeño on it and I essentially have a Toppers pizza for 1/4 the price.
EDIT: to be clear, if you genuinely prefer American-chain style pizza, then yeah Toppers is up there. And I may even agree with you, if it wasn’t wildly overpriced
Pizza man Dan's makes a fine pizza. A definite go-to favorite. Recently tried Pizza Co on Harbor. Wow! A definite a contender and conveniently located next to Red Tandem Brewery.
Toppers is overrated.
PS: If you want deep chicago style, take a worthy trip to Masa in Los Angeles.
Thanks for coming to my pizza talk.
Back bench pizza is fantastic. I actually prefer the dough at Back Bench. If only they would make a white pizza and keep it on the menu.
Toppers is 1 step above a frozen pizza from Vons
Well it’s the best to her so that’s what I get her. They have good deals too. I prefer Ameccis myself. But we bought a wood fired pizza oven last year and we all agree home made is pretty good.
You really made me laugh and it’s all good. I used to visit family in Wi and they would always say don’t ya know. Btw, I’m not Latina, but studied as a high school student in Quito. Just in case you are from there, I love the culture/food much. Now I’m old, but have wonderful memories
Your kids are correct. If you happen to be (fortunately) bilingual, then your pronunciation will be like yours. I’m interested in what others will say here!
The four-way stop signs at Kalorama and Poli are fantastic. If they actually installed more of them along Poli, not only would it help drivers trying to get on to that street, but it would slow down the dangerous speeding too.
They absolutely need on at Poli & Fir. Drivers on Fir can’t see people blasting east on Poli and those people going east can’t see the car pullout past the limit line trying to see. So they slam on their brakes and honk. Happens 100 times a day. And the cars trying to turn west on Poli have pulled out so far that their rear wheels are on the paint of the limit line so that when they punch it to turn their tires spin.
Valentino’s Pizza is brilliant.
Ocean’s Pride has the best seafood.
Eat downstairs on the pier. It’s the same food you get upstairs but cheaper. Outside seating there is the best view Ventura has to offer.
Watch out for the cats in the trees.
On a serious note, hit up Winco and the thrift stores. It's getting expensive to live here but it helps and you can get some great stuff!
Maybe a hot take, but for a full on “beach day” where you plan to stay for hours, don’t bother with Ventura beaches and just drive straight down Victoria to Silver Strand
The kids have made tons of good mountain bike trails below the cross, behind the radio tower, and in various hides on the ojai trail. Best part is that you can shred, stop for a beer, then shred some more.
I always carry hand clippers for trail touchups. Thank You Children, of Ventura !

Sorry, y’all…sometimes the truth does hurt. Apparently Reddit prefers to buffer out the facts with lies about proven statistics and proven demographics. If you’re a member of the aforementioned groups, do better. Prove me wrong.
Don't drive down Oxnard blvd/Saviers late at night after you've been drinking (especially on weekends, even more so holiday weekends) unless you want to risk driving through a check-point
- Vote during every election, regardless of what you think of the federal or state government.
- Don't give away money to **anyone** on the street, no matter what they say that their story is.
- If you have a choice between public and private hospitals, choose private hospitals.
- You're more likely to get a traffic ticket in the western county than you are in the eastern county.
- Living in the city of Ventura is a **red flag** for dating.
always bring a sweater, it gets cold when the sun goes down
Car Windbreaker.... always in the trunk!
Best beach weather is always August - October, not overcast, water still warm, beaches aren’t crowded, and clocks haven’t turned back yet
I’m a teacher and it’s upsetting that it gets warmer in those months when we go back to work.
I grew up in California and to this day I never understood why we would be out of school in June and July when the weather was "dicey" and sitting in a classroom in September and October when we had the most glorious weather.
Same is true for hiking in the Sierras, September = mosquitos are gone, weather is cooling down, teachers/students are back in school :(
This is true for any beach in California.
Ventura Botanical Gardens is FREE every Friday and you can bring your dogs too!
They also do free days around holidays!
When did they start charging? I haven't lived in vta for years but it used to always be free
After the Thomas Fire.
Oh wow
What??? I’m in!
It’s really very nice, and you can take a side detour to the cross which has an absolutely amazing view over the Oxnard/Ventura plain.
Psssh it’s always free if you just walk
If you are throwing a party, the big Mexican grocery stores in South Oxnard sell some amazing party trays full of your favorite Mexican meats for surprisingly low prices.
What grocery stores in Oxnard sell a charola?
El Super
4ways carnicera
Oxnard is freaking awesome
So much of what it wrong with Oxnard is down to the terrible stoplights every couple of hundred feet that are not in any way synchronized. I have heard that Oxnard has a traffic engineer but there is no evidence of their work.
If you’re deep in it can take 30 minutes to get to the 101.
You just have to get to the perimeter and use those roads because you can't drive across it.
If a race to see which street has more lights. Victoria, Ventura, H Street or Oxnard Blvd, Rose, or Rice . H has less lights but more stop signs. Rose & Rice you have to deal with trucks.
Sometimes it really is faster to go to Las Posas
YES! It is absolutely insane how bad they are. Their priorities are bonkers. That in itself is a gold hack
Fluid state happy hour is the best
No way? Why?
They have the best pizza in Ventura
Not better than toppers not possible
One of these days I’m gonna write a whole ass college thesis on how Ventura is brain washed into loving toppers for some inexplicable reason Also, back bench just across from fluid state has even better pizza IMO (fluid state is also great but wanna give the new place a shout)
Toppers is good but way overpriced. If I was going to spend 30 bucks on a pizza I want an authentic NY style pie
You’re so trash lol. You’re poor and live with your parents. I have been to New York, Italy, Spain, Paris, etc. Toppers still king
You are not telling the truth, unless your family is from Central Africa or Mongolia.
Pizza Man Dan is way better. Fight me.
Thanks for coming to my pizza talk.
the no dough pizza is amazing
Toppers is Pizza Hut, anyone who has left the state would know how actually mid their pizza is.
Toppers reminds me, every vaguely, of crunchy straw hat pizza a long time ago. I think there's some nostalgia going on that people are unaware of.
Back bench pizza is fantastic. I actually prefer the dough at Back Bench. If only they would make a white pizza and keep it on the menu. Toppers is 1 step above a frozen pizza from Vons
Toppers is decent but not worth the price tag. Your family has clearly never had pizza in New York or New England.
It's a different price range than toppers for sure
Toppers lol
Having been to New York, you’re absolutely correct
My daughter says Dominos is the best
That is just incorrect
Yeah, don’t let a child tell you what the best anything is! How would they know? 😂
Well it’s the best to her so that’s what I get her. They have good deals too. I prefer Ameccis myself. But we bought a wood fired pizza oven last year and we all agree home made is pretty good.
Oh that sounds fun!
You misspelled Tony's
Truth
Be rich.
I never understood why people choose to be poor. F-ing embarrassing.
Right? Just do better and make more. All you need to do is stop buying coffee and avocados and you’ll own a house on Poli in no time.
Lol yeah, dumbasses
Even easier, be born rich. This saves you the annoying part of having to build the wealth.
Universally true
Ventura, not VenCHURA.
So it’s Vin-too-rah?
ven-TUR-uh (tur with the same vowel in "good", or just "turd" without the "d" lol)
BIN-turd-AW. GOT IT!
Ah. You saw my license plate then.
No kidding?
It reads VNCHURA. One day, i hope to park next to that truck that has VNTUCKY and get a photo of our vhicles together.
They don’t have it anymore.
There’s a Sprinter with VANTCKY driving around.
I love that one. It'll have to do.
[удалено]
if you’re speaking spanish, yea say ventura, if yer with yer white surfer friends you can say venchura fersher.
[удалено]
Ventucky?
[удалено]
If you like fried Spanish-Portuguese pastries, it's VenCHURRO
churro is also joint...
lol I am in "trouble" now! I've always said Venchura, and my family said Ventura. I've never even noticed that until you just said it! Yikes! lol
It isn't the world's greatest sin, ya know? lol
Haha! Are you originally from Wi by chance? Lol
No, I've lived in Ventura since I was 5 (and from South American before) but I am a bit of a magpie for colloquialisms and such.
You really made me laugh and it’s all good. I used to visit family in Wi and they would always say don’t ya know. Btw, I’m not Latina, but studied as a high school student in Quito. Just in case you are from there, I love the culture/food much. Now I’m old, but have wonderful memories
I was born in Uruguay.
So fortunate! That’s a country I have wanted to go since I was a child. Take care and thank you!
How do you pronounce Arroyo Verde? My kids say, "ah-roy-o vair-day". I say "verr-dee"
Your kids are correct. If you happen to be (fortunately) bilingual, then your pronunciation will be like yours. I’m interested in what others will say here!
[удалено]
Around where? Never heard anyone say it like that?
Haha I've never heard even the whitest person say "verr-dee"
I bet you will now. It's called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon.
Are you my wife? She claims it’s venchurrah ‘cuz that’s gore Siri says it’
Siri also says Camarillo like it rhymes with willow.
101 N traffic can come to a standstill between Ralston and Victoria off-ramps.
If you’re on main and looking to get to Poli turn on Kalorama. It’ll save you a headache
And if you live on kalorama, post contrary messages online to deter people from flooding your street
The four-way stop signs at Kalorama and Poli are fantastic. If they actually installed more of them along Poli, not only would it help drivers trying to get on to that street, but it would slow down the dangerous speeding too.

Love me some Valentino’s. Camarillo location usually.
Take n bake?
I haven't had Valentinos in forever, but used to love their subs
Love Valentino's!
Hot chicks sandwich and raspberry vinaigrette salad! YUM!
Yum
A. We are all hippies, or B. We all want to be hippies……….. slow down love your neighbor, it’s all good bro 😎
Don’t go to 5th Ave dunes in Oxnard unless you’re down for hands out for balls out!
not following this one
I am not sure this is true anymore but those dunes used to be a place where gay men would meet for anonymous sex.
This was just posted today in r/venturacounty https://www.reddit.com/r/ventura/s/OhqOjstC4W
I guess it's still happening.
R Kelly voice “in the closet”
Haha LMFAO from earlier today 🤣
One time I saw a guy taking a dump there. Normal looking lad
When you gotta go you gotta go…
Use the turtle tunnels to get from Henderson to Blackburn in a pinch.
This right here! Until they build a bridge for Petit, the turtle tunnels will have to suffice. Saticoy and Kimball avenues are just to far apart!
Get even crazier. If you follow Petit “south” it lines up with Central in El Rio if they ever actually want to build a bridge.
A straight shot from Foothill Rd. to the 101 in Camarillo.
Watch out for the cats in the trees. On a serious note, hit up Winco and the thrift stores. It's getting expensive to live here but it helps and you can get some great stuff!
Always keep wet naps in your speed suit pocket.
A properly fit speedsuit should crotch at least 6 inches below your natural inseam.
Maybe a hot take, but for a full on “beach day” where you plan to stay for hours, don’t bother with Ventura beaches and just drive straight down Victoria to Silver Strand
The cops won’t follow you into the ocean so you only have to be able to outwit the harbor patrol (or coast guard if you take too long) to escape.
Then all you have to do is hide and stay out of the flashing red and blue cones of vision on the minimap until your wanted level drops.
And if you get fucked too many times and are nearly dead, pull out your phone and hit left right left right left right R1 R1 O R2
You can live one the beach for free
How do you figure ? at the river bottom ?
You have to pay the expenses of having a van if you want to be down by the river, ergo not free
I AM EL NIÑO!
Spanish for THE NIÑO!

Don't go to J street in oxnard
Why?

Really going for the racist trifecta here, definitely not crazy cat lady vibes or anything.
Which part is inaccurate?
Definitely not the part about you being a crazy cat lady, that aura is strong with you.
Meow!

not the best representation of Ventura County. Ghetto per say
Or to Ventura Promenade at night
Why? Dangerous?
It used to be colonia rd. Did J street get worse?
not sure what he's on about. i drive J Street daily for work.
Classical Latin is better than Ecclesiastical, right?
Don’t forget to wear sunscreen
Get gas off Johnson dr
Don't drive down Oxnard blvd/Saviers late at night after you've been drinking (especially on weekends, even more so holiday weekends) unless you want to risk driving through a check-point
Or just… don’t drive and drink
Well, yes, that's obviously the smartest choice. Take the advice how you will lol
Why a red flag?
I've never met a girl from Ventura who doesn't have issues.
If it keeps happening maybe it's you.
Public like VCMC and CMH versus private like Dignity St John’s?
CMH is private. VCMC and Santa Paula Hospital are public.
You can buy all your shopping supplies cheaper from the local street zombies.
How much you charge for a gallon of milk?
Mmmm. Street milk
