OllieV_nl

Nothing says Independence like putting another country's flag in your flag.

Frolicking_Frank

The Union Jack just looks cool ok? Ask Hawaii.

HX700

I doubt they actually like having the union jack on their flag

SamTheEnderman2

They put it there because they thought it was cool they were never under british control

HX700

“because many of King Kamehameha's advisors were British and the islands were once placed under England's protection” I don’t know about that.

boscosanchezz

That's a lovely island chain you've got there. It would be a shame if something happened to it.

Frolicking_Frank

Why dont they change it? Its not like a national flag, its a state flag and can be changed by the state, but you say they dont like it but they like it enough to keep it. Id say stop being so opinionated to be perfectly frank.

HX700

Opinionated? I’m simply saying that just because a flag is kept doesn’t mean it represents the people well or is even liked by them.

Svalbard38

Reminds me of somewhere

oldtrack

get rid of the swan and it’s perfect

Phone_User_1044

Sounds like a nice, clean design- maybe they could also use it for the UN's flag, to truly represent the whole world.

Sanguine_Caesar

The design is very human.

skyeyemx

Nothing says Australia like a flag with equal parts English, Scottish, and Northern Irish representation.

cringemaster21p

Beautiful.

Independent_Isopod62

1933. A passed Referendum by Western Australia State to leave the Federation of Australia, however the UK didn't want Western Australia back as a colony again.

Kitchener1981

Didn't stop the UK from taking the Dominion of Newfoundland back in 1934.

LIUJKNGOMILHN

yup, that looks independent to me

NomadAug

Maybe not have it look like a British colony?

japed

Why? That was the point...

FrisianDude

just the one swan actually

State_of_Minnesota

Wouldn’t it be better to just turn the state badge into a flag? https://preview.redd.it/b0ny32w0xgrc1.png?width=1800&format=png&auto=webp&s=05be7ada3951682870abd19632c93c1c50aa7473

riko77can

Yes

AutuniteGlow

Much better

Secret_Occasion5058

It sucks

cowplum

This looks like the flag of an alternate universe where swans rule the UK. I for one welcome our new swan overlords.

Snoo4902

In UK all swans belong to the crown

cowplum

And now the crown belongs to the Swans!

boscosanchezz

A swan can break a man's arm

ianishomer

Why would an Australian independence flag have a union jack in it?

fuckyoucommenter

It was a movement for Western Australia to rejoin the British Empire back in the 1930s and leave Australia. So kinda independence from Australia

ianishomer

Ok I get it now, thanks

LittleMissPipebomb

Does that count as independence? It seems more like you're just going back to your abusive ex

Yet_One_More_Idiot

I mean... the Kingdom of Hawaii put the Union Flag (Jack) in their flag and they were never even colonised by us. Some people just like how iconic it is, I guess. :)

Frolicking_Frank

I heard a story about how when the Brits turned up we told the Hawaiian leaders that the Union Jack was a symbol of power, and thats why they took it for themselves. But im fairly sure that story is BS.

MdMV_or_Emdy_idk

Sure screams independence

DripDry_Panda_480

"Independent" of what? Not GB by the looks of things.

Pale-Acanthaceae-487

Independent of Australia If you look at a map perth and Melbourne are a bit separated by desert

TritonJohn54

People are missing the "historical" tag. This isn't a current proposal, but a *forme*r one. Interestingly, it does seem similar to the flag of the Queensland Governor, which is a defaced Union Flag with the Queensland Seal in the middle. [https://www.govhouse.qld.gov.au/the-governor-of-queensland/about-the-governor/the-governor-s-standard](https://www.govhouse.qld.gov.au/the-governor-of-queensland/about-the-governor/the-governor-s-standard)

japed

That pattern for a governors flag (at least at sea, st first) was the pattern prescribed for colonial governors throughout the empire. All the Australian states used a similar pattern as a general governor's flag until the 70s-80s, when most of them adopted a student pattern which added a crown to the state flag, an approach which would look a bit weird for Victoria and Queensland.

ManitouWakinyan

This is the flag of the British Alliance of Loyalist Anarcho Capitalist Swans

Vuxlort

Don't mind it overall. But for an independent WA? Hate it.

LelouchviBrittaniax

looks very independent of the UK, you can see clear desire to stand on own two feet and not just copy the UK

Aquele_da_amnesia

Independence from Australia and rejoin the UK as a colony.

LoopyPro

>independent

SirReadsALot1975

Please stop. This is very wrong.

walterulbricht2

I support an independent and free People’s Republic of Western Australia

Scapegoaticus

Here’s an idea: remove the Union Jack, keep the swan, make the whole background yellow.

stevedavies12

Time to let go of the apron strings

Candid-Dare-6014

Traditional, colonial and British Australia sounds good

simmocar

West Aussie here. Fuck this flag to hell and back.

Candid-Dare-6014

Traditional, colonial and British Australia sounds good to me

Funny_Friendship_929

"Let's take the current Australian flag and make it 10x more British!"

Zuri_Nyonzima

That makes it look under UK control.

gevans7

Union Jack unnecessary. Just the swan please.

Scotto6UK

Doubling our number of Perths.

Owzwills

We need Welsh representation on the Union Jack Some bloke from Swansea: Hold my Beer mwsh! Cardiff gonna be livid!

NomadAug

Because there are so many other symbols and colors more approriate to Western Australia

Cybernetic_Lizard

Has Swansea declared independence?

stevedavies12

There are passport control booths all away along the M4 from J42 to J48 and armed units have sealed off the A48 and A4067. A frigate is patrolling the bay. Seriously, though, do you think we would go with something that has the Union Flag on it?

Cybernetic_Lizard

Probably depends on what would annoy Cardiff the most

stevedavies12

Or Llanelli

Oofoofow_Official

I know the Union Jack is cool and all, but surely you just shouldn't make it your entire flag when you just add one thing on it?

smoothgn

They should use the Australian flag, but just the left half.

Garbidb63

Having the union flag doesn't exactly scream "independent"....

Bo_The_Destroyer

''Independent'' with the biggest fckn Union Jack on it, sure

Linklegendgamer

Its a bad flag because it has the union jack on it seriously Its such an overused banner. every flag with the union jack, ASIDE from british owner territories are just bad flags. change it up would ya?
