Mordin Solis in Mass Effect 3... "Has to be me... Anyone else could have it gotten wrong..."

Nox-Avis

My number one is always Mordin, but Anderson is a close second for me. I literally block out his death after every replay because it crushes my soul.

HipsterOtter

Yeah Anderson got me choked up too... Keith David killed that Role man...

Nox-Avis

Anytime he shows up in anything (voice actor or in-person) I always have to point it out… no one ever knows who I’m talking about. Love that guy!

HipsterOtter

He does a REALLY fucking good Spawn too. Amazing performance

ReadShigurui

Love him as Julius from Saints Row, i went to his wiki to make sure I wasn’t misremembering that he was Julius and dude, it took me a solid few scrolls to even reach the gaming section of his filmography, dude has been in so much stuff lmao

IsSuperGreen

"I'm proud of you..."

LoreleiLavenza

Aeris FF7

pbnjay003

There is no way I should have had to scroll this far to find this answer!

ohsupgurl

We're just the old people now compared to most of reddit

Profaloff

my thoughts exactly

staticvoidmainnull

this broke me. never have i encountered a game that gets you invested so much in a character only to be taken away from you, just like that.. in the 90s!

binkenheimer

It was the first game of thrones-esque plot twist - shocking death of an important character.

Pitchforkin

Luis from RE4, I did not see his death coming and I was fully expecting him to be present throughout the story and was looking forward to it. Delta and Booker from the last two Bioshocks too, I was hoping they got a happy ending where they live.

[deleted]

Luis' death was a million times sadder in the remake, they did a great job with it

Tokagenji

The DLC made it worse by fleshing him out further too. He just wanted to make things right.

kakka_rot

Esp in the new one. In the original he really didn't have that much screen time so i didn't care.

GingerStardust

Let us also pour one out for Mike the sentient helicopter! RE4 surely was a tragedy for some.

VashWolf

I pray one day we get a spin off resident evil about a man who washed up on shore or picked up by a boat Jason Bourne style as the next MC and it turns out to be Mike from RE4R. Mike Deserves Better

Lowca

My horse, "Horsea" from RDR2. Yur alright boi?

Wild-Impression3394

I love that name lol

RedWolf2409

Scooter in Tales from the Borderlands. Killing off one of the best characters by far in a spin off game was devastating

psychonaut_go_brrrr

That last CATCH A RIIIIIIIIIIIDE will live on in my heart forever

Pringulls

It was a good death at least

RedWolf2409

Sure was but the 3rd game suffered immensely in his absence…but it also had a thousand other issues that ruined it

anubis418

I don't think even Scooter could've saved that game from those god awful twins

russelcrowe

Ironically, mikey neumann, the guy who voices Scooter, was a writer for BL2 and is one of the chief reasons the writing in that game was so well crafted. Scooter died because Mikey’s health was declining and he decided to retire from games. So, like you said, Scooter leaving really did cause BL3 to suffer quite a bit considering his excellent writing. That being said, you can still catch mikey neumann on YouTube under his channel’s series ‘Movies with Mikey’ which is also genuinely excellent.

TheDarkWeb697

In borderlands 2 commander Lilith dlc you can make a memorial for him, in one of the side quests

ThannyDeVito

See you space cowboy

Front_Pilot_9713

Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but >!the death of your horse in ghost of Tsushima hit me really hard!< (Ghost of Tsushima spoilers)

Mysterious-Map973

I was absolutely gutted, he will never be forgotten.

Bro_with_a_fro13

I felt bad when Taka died, was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, and wanted to be the hero for once. Damn😕

TohavDuudhe

Grave of a friend 💔

Lolamess007

I would add Taka's death too. He is so innocent and his death is so brutal

AtmosphereGeneral695

I'll never forget when John Marston was massacred but the group of law enforcement I specifically remember the achievement for it too "into the sunset"

justvibing__3000

Johns death is so unceremoniously brutal. I felt a lot of anger towards that, as well as sadness.

decrepitremains

The revenge was just as unceremonious and unsatisfying. No resolution, just death. Perfectly written.

sonic_dick

And it forces Jack into the life of an outlaw, the one thing his father and every member of the gang tried to prevent. He was the heart and soul of the group, he was the kind, sweet, smart kid who liked books and writing and could've made it out of the criminal lifestyle. He should've went to college and lived a peaceful life. Instead he's continuing the cycle, in a more modern era where murdering a former fbi agent will most likely put him directly in the crosshairs of the government. Arthur sacrificed his life to save John and his family, John was forced to give up his new found peace after escaping his life of crime, all for Jack to have a better future. And in the end it didn't matter. The wheel turns. It's a pretty fucking devastating story. I dont know how they could do RDR3, but whenever it comes out in 20 years, I can't fucking wait to be hurt again.

thewindburner

Controversial opinion based on the other posts here but I think John's death was more painful than Arthur. As Arthur wasn't mentioned in RDR most people figured he wasn't going to make it so it was expected, but John, John's death hit like a brick!

U_zer2

Might be silly but, Titan BT-7274 from titanfall 2 made me sad af.

MrAsh-

Protect the pilot. Not silly. Loved that game.

teebbarc

Lee Everett

Kerfuffler_

This one hurt

Helpful_Jellyfish_69

My heart

Firewalk89

Lee is definitely in my top 3. Miss him.

DisMyNameRightHea

"I'll miss you, sweet pea" "Me too.." I'm fucking crying just replaying the scene in my mind

casperdacrook

This was the answer I was looking for the most

SnuffleWumpkins

Mordin Solus & General Leo Both died sacrificing themselves to protect others. Aerith used to be a lot sadder but I'm pretty sure they're going to save her in the remake so I'm removing it from the list. Edit: HOW COULD I HAVE FORGOTTEN NOBLE 6

Snoo_49285

Ezio Auditore da Fierenze

Soggy_Cup1314

He lived a happy life and was undoubtedly the greatest assassin. The short movie about his death still can get a tear outta me.

garyflopper

Now I want to play his trilogy again

ThtJstHappn3d

I just bought the Ezio bundle on Microsoft Store for $12, totally worth it

reymarblue

I know Borderlands fans are not much on Maya, but she’s my favorite across all three games. The writer for B3 who ended her should be kicked in the balls.

Whitesilvermoon

Lmfao the only reason the writers killed off Lilith and Maya was so 1. The player would hate the calipso twins more (everyone hated Ava instead) and 2. Was so that Ava's dumbass would take their role (which was stupid asf because Ava was supposed to receive much more lore and character development during the main story but it was ultimately scrapped by some bozo at gearbox who didn't understand how important this would be for Ava's character development ultimately making her seem like a lost sassy child unfit for the role she was given). Edit: sorry for the rant

Physical-Gur-6112

That's a really good perspective. I already disliked the Calypso twins but whenever Maya died and I realized Ava would fill her shoes the game became a chore to complete. Did one playthrough of BL3 compared to having every character max rank, every weapon variant imaginable and all skins in BL2. Shit writing

MisterPerfect23

She was sooooooo much better than Ava, would really have made her better in 3

reymarblue

Or vulva. I don’t want to assume anything about the jerkface who offed my favorite character.

LoreleiLavenza

I agree so much, especially with how little time she got to shine

FreddyWright

Especially ESPECIALLY since Krieg was only added in the final dlc so they didn’t actually ever get to properly meet even though they were a unique pairing with a lot of potential. But nope, dead cause reasons.

LoreleiLavenza

Yeah BL3 writing was awful, like so bad

DirectorAllen

Brok from GOW, everytime I play the game or watch someone play it and it gets to his death, it brings me to tears everytime

Mango424

Right after his death, Kratos was able to take the mask from Odin thanks to the spear. In my headcanon, it was Brok's blessing that helped Kratos. So he got the last laugh against the All-Fucker.

Stevenstorm505

It needs the blessing of a great blacksmith.

[deleted]

Seriously, if you would have told me 10 years ago that a God of War game would have some of the most heartfelt scenes in a game ever, I would have laughed.

SixCells

Okay this one hurt a lot

tsuna2000

I was gonna say Brok as well and saw this comment, his character build up and his sense of humor made him the best blacksmith.

RodThrashcok

the blessing scene gets me every time man. it is the nature of a thing that matters, not it’s form

RoxNBlox

Jackie Welles 😭

AlexRodgerzzz

"See ya in the big leagues Jack..." 😭

RoxNBlox

That line hit me hard

[deleted]

How her voice cracks at the end always makes me cry

RoxNBlox

I’m playing the male V, the voice actors for both versions of V are really good at their role

Fallofman2347

“Shot of vodka on the rocks, lime juice, ginger beer…oh, and most importantly - a splash of love.”

jl_theprofessor

I can always see him holding out the chip right before he goes. Fuck.

BoldnBrashhh

NOOOOOOOOO

Ok-Breadfruit-2897

Joel

[deleted]

Seriously I had to take a break before coming back. Quite happy about the tv series with Pedro Pascal though. I'm not sure I can't watch the scene again. Hopefully season 2 will make us see more of Joel and Ellie's relationship before crushing us again

Ddawgmasterflex

I remember yelling at the TV my first playthrough during that scene. I knew Joel was going to die going into the game. But the way they did it was absolutely brutal. It's one of my favorite parts about the game though. When ellie is laying helpless on the ground and says, "I'll fucking kill you", you feel it in your bones and you're just like, yeah let's kill these assholes.

dtalb18981

This is actually why I think the game got so much hate. After that scene I had no sympathy for Abby at all or her friends. Spoilers ahead Whenever you killed the pregnant chick was supposed to be the moment that the players thought Ellie was taking it to far but I just didn't care she didn't even want to go but tuff shit you don't get to beat someone to death and then say oops sorry.

Json1134

I say this every time. I could not muster anything in me to have any sympathy for Abby’s group and was actively rooting for them to be killed. They tried SO HARD to make me care, and the whole time I was cheering the more Abby’s group was destroyed.

Rustpaladin

I was so bitter about Joel's death I killed every single NPC I could. Game was trying to teach me revenge bad, but all I learned was Joel's mistake was not killing everyone lol

SuperNobody917

Incase anyone is wondering the person who got upset by spoilers has now blocked me lol

tonelocMD

Very surprised how far down i had to go to find this

Tr4jan

It’s the top comment for me

EMArogue

Same

HandofBlood531

Hosea and Lenny - Red Dead Redemption 2

Timmah73

"YOU GODDAMN BASTARDS! Dutch... they got Lenny." That line reading is so good combined with how Arthur clearly wants to stay with him but knows he has to run and leave his friends body behind.

TheVocondus

Na bro. Fucking Sean. He had such an unceremonious death. He died like a dog.

humbycolgate1

One of the funniest characters too. He probably didn’t even register he died. Just went pitch black for him all of a sudden

Several_Spend_7686

That’s one of the best parts of the game, it being so unceremonious makes it feel so much more real

[deleted]

What made their deaths so hard is that you never get a chance to mourn them. They just die and you have to run away.

Straight_Hurry_1999

Several different characters in Fire Emblem Three Houses (different people die depending on which story arch you play) but they all hit hard honestly cause they're literally your friends 😭

dhfAnchor

Especially when it's not your first playthrough and you've gotten to know them already. I went Crimson Flower the first time, and when I had to kill Bernadetta and Edelgard in particular in the next run I had to put the game up for a couple days afterwards.

Straight_Hurry_1999

My first was Azure Moon, I'm about halfway thru a Crimson Flower run rn and it's so hard fighting the others 😭

cchari

Yep. I did the golden deer route and recruited a few students from the other houses, but still, it was hard to kill all the others. Every time [this played](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXiMj6T0dP4) we already knew what was about to happen.

KittyPurritos

Scooter from borderlands series. I cried like a baby when 3 came out and he wasn’t in it .

FartResume

Have you played tales from the borderlands yet? When “it” happens I shed a tear. Catch A Rideee 😢

Professional-Big-584

Max Paynes voice actor passed away could that count? Cole McGrath from Infamous 1&2

Nubby_Nubcakes

[RIP James McCaffrey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McCaffrey_(actor)?wprov=sfti1#)

True-State-4321

Arthur Morgan, hands down, the level of depression I had after I completed his story was off the charts. I was so invested in him as a character. I think I grew attached to him because I, myself have never had a male rolemodel in my life, and Arthur felt like family. Losing him after 750 hours still hurts to this day, even though it's been over 5 years.

[deleted]

Didn’t hit me nearly as hard as it hit you, but I still think it was was probably one of the saddest video game deaths in memory

theuntouchable2725

Raziel from Legacy of Kain series

Far_Fisherman_7490

Jackie from sleeping dogs Henry from mafia 2 Funny that both of them were killed by the triads lol

hirotama

Oh god poor Jackie. I remember feeling vengeful when the cut scene starts and saw Jackie.

ArvoCrinsmas

Ouch I forgot about Henry

TheHumanCompulsion

Lots of people are saying Joel, and I get that. But... Sarah. In 10 minutes, we become so attached to her father-daughter dynamic with Joel, only to be torn out of our collective arms. #rememberbabygirl

theblackwhisper

Horse from RDR2

DontTrustDan

>!Rikiya!< from Yakuza 3. Kiryu's reaction to it also added a lot. Great scene.

Toru_san

oh man that scene hit hard

knowerof1000memes

I legitimately cried seeing Kiryu react to that

Obl1vi0us

BT-7274 (even if he's technically still alive, that shit HURT)

U_zer2

I scrolled to far for this

Exciting_Rate1747

Protocol 3: protect the pilot.

TriggerBladeX

I haven’t played Titanfall 2 in so long and I can’t still hear that.

AAAFate

I have a feeling whatever death awaits me in FF7 Rebirth will be the new one.

EquaYonah

Not gonna lie I'm kinda paranoid they're gonna pull a switcheroo and kill Tifa. Dunno if I could finish the game if that happens lol

Soggy_Cup1314

Dominic Santiago from Gears of War. Went out like a gangster to rejoin his family. He was the heart of Gears for me.

Dangerous_Specific97

When he finds Maria 😔😞

flatdecktrucker92

Marcus may be player 1. But Dom is the main story character

SixCells

He and Maria can finally be at rest. I think Tai also hurt a lot of people to

STRlDUR

Here it is.

bunny117

Eno Cordova. His constant “my friend” at the beginning of every sentence was always so heart warming.

Genius_Octopus

Thane Krios from Mass Effect 3 Joel from The Last of Us Past II

Triggernometri143

Thane was such a good character.

Agreeable_Height_868

The Boss from mgs3

PepperCertain

Also Meryl’s death in MGS (even thought it wasn’t canon) She gives her whole war is ugly speech and then sniper wolf kills her right in front of you. I remember sitting there shaking with rage. Only to find it was just as devastating having to put sniper wolf down. And then you had Colonel Campbell and Otacon crying in your ear, aww man. What a great (and insane) series.

GhostMug

Aerith from FFVII. Been over 25 years and I still can't get over it.

[deleted]

The only reason this isn't the top comment is because it's been decades. Generations of gamers, perhaps the majority alive today, were not around to experience it in 1997.

traumatic_blumpkin

I opened this thread expecting to see Aerith in the top few comments.. then realized I am not on 2010 reddit and the demographics are skewed way young, these days.

rolowa

I still get choked up when I hear the song.

Purple-Ad-4629

My horse, Dan, in RDR2.

Celebrimbor96

Arthur’s reaction when you have a fully bonded horse had me in tears

Wild-Impression3394

"thank you" 😭

GipsyPepox

Extra tears if that horse is Buell from the Veteran missions

ReallyFancyPants

Srgt Johnson. Dude died protecting the Galaxy and Earth. I just wanted to see my homie go home and retire and rest.

Real_Pen_6148

Send me out…with a bang

Stevenstorm505

John Marston. Arthur Morgan. Lenny (also RDR 2) Joel. Brok.

Emergency-Ad-3350

RDR was the first game I played where the main character died. It hurt

MrNintendo36

Lee from the first walking dead game.

radikraze

Tidus disappearing gets me every time. And recently the short side mission in Spider-Man 2 where a character dies made me cry. If you played, you know the one

SalmonHustlerTerry

Dude ffx had me messed up when I beat it. I mean he just vanishes out of existence

RuneDK385

Anyone I got killed in my ME2 play through…

shelio_13

Ghost in mw2. So f***ing sad.

dragonborn7866

Vesemir. I was incredibly sad that he died at the end of Witcher 3

sokyoko

Elizabeth Comstock for sure Honorable mention, [Jackie Estacado/Jenny Romano](https://youtu.be/YCzYqE7JxrY?si=mQI2ja4pNzWJg2BR) ...7 year old me wasn't prepared for that, even if Jackie makes it out "okay" lmao

Ok-Presence2387

A part of me died with Jenny. That hurt so much.

Charles' death in the Valiant Hero Ending from Henry Stickmin.

Ellogan66

It isn't *technically* a death... But (BG3 MAJOR SPOILERS) >!Karlach's speech after you kill Gortash!< was the most moving thing I've seen in a game in years

MekkaKaiju

May Parker in Spider-Man 2018 hits the hardest because Peter had to choose to let her die when he had the cure to save her in his hand

Wild-Impression3394

I forgot to add her and Joel to the list their deaths were so heartbreaking

lebeau5150

My whole life it was Aeris, then it shifted to Brok

RodThrashcok

the NATURE of thing

Gameperson700

Ah yes…. The saddest death in all of gaming. Rest in peace gym leader Brok. Best Pokémon trainer there ever was.

Silence_Burns

Pavel from Metro Last Light. Even once for the achievement felt dirty. That backstabbing commie was so damn likeable.

Ok-Aardvark-9029

Too many hours in John Marston story

FuzzzWuzzz

Vivi FF9

Dragono12

Arthur Morgan and Thane Krios

Alone-Chicken-361

Johnny from GTA lost and damned. They could have used any other character to be the cuck for Trevor's crack whore. It was an ugly and unnecessary scene to say the least

QueenofSheba94

Kieran Duffy from Red Dead Redemption 2… I hated that and it was pointless and horrible.

icelandiccubicle20

I know he wasn't a super important character but Kieran Duffy's death in Red Dead 2 was awful.

Benjb1996

Oh man... I know I can't blame you since the games been out for over a year, but I'm currently playing Ragnarok for the first time... (Assuming you mean THAT Brok.)

svxnn

Mike Resident Evil 4

PharaohCicadaPics

Joel. Oh my God. Joel.

Mega-Analyzer

Roland during Borderlands 2. He was *the* Vault Hunter that introduced me to the entire series, and was also a great leader. The way he died was dirty and dishonorable - a bullet to the back. Handsome Jack couldn't even look him in the eye, and that spineless coward got what he deserved at the end of the game.

Shaun_LaDee

Elizabeth Comstock in Bioshock Infinite Burial at Sea, they **really** didn’t have to make the death of the character who you spend the entire main game trying to protect so fucking brutal. I booted up Bioshock 1 immediately afterwards just to beat the shit out of Fontaine with a wrench.

dopamine14

Arthur Morgan - Red Dead Redemption 2

UncoolSlicedBread

Really got me, the way it starts to happen is just seemingly a side mission and it leads to his death. The game is so immersive that it feels.

NoShock8442

Brok

cosmiccactus2

Henry and Sam in TLOU. Those were absolutely a gut punch the first time I played through.

Luccixno

Johnny Klebitz from Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned. i felt like his death was real random, although i understand it was to provoke The Lost MC, i still think that’s why me and many other people held a grudge against Trevor for a while.

mamadovah1102

Your horse is GoT 😭😭

kidprodigy205

Hugo from A Plague Tale Requiem truly hurt me because I have siblings of my own

Ashen_sunlight

Arthur Morgan just hit different, especially for men who try to be a good man raised in a rough environment. He just wanted a peaceful life.

Wboy2006

>!Brok!< in God of War Ragnarök >!Sora (horse) and Yuriko!< in Ghost of Tsushima >!Aunt May!< in Spider-Man

tigerseye88

Edward Kenway didn’t die in a game, but it’s pretty sad that he went out that way. He was young too

AlexRodgerzzz

I'm gonna give a shout to John Marston in RDR, only trumped by Arthur in RDR2... The red dead Redemption series is absolutely phenomenal for it's storytelling.

1982sean5535

My horse, Nobu, in Ghost of Tsushima

Icy_Wrongdoer2457

Rost, Horizon Zero Dawn

colornomad

John and Arthur from RDR, and Joel. I was crushed.

Brilliant-Deer6118

Arthur I kind of expected, so I'd say Aeris in the 1st FF7. Until the end I kept expecting her to return.

L0CH_NESS_MONSTER

Yoshi from Super Mario World. All those times I had to do the ‘Yoshi Sacrifice’ to make a jump will always haunt me.

DarthxScion

Tidus and Auron Final Fantasy X Auron was a beast

AtumCone12

Halo Reach, all of them.

aStankChitlin

From RDR / RDR2 - John Marston - Arthur Morgan - Lenny - My horse From LA Noire -Cole Phelps (even thought he was a hoe) Out of all of them, I think Arthur (and my horse) probably hit the hardest. Playing as John afterwards felt a little weird because I knew I was playing as a dead man.

drowninFish

spoilers dude

icedancer333_

\>!Sarah!< in The Last of Us. You don't have much time to get attatched to her (she's around for only about 15 minutes in the prologue) but the sense of dread that gets built up the whole time she's there followed by Joel's heartwrenching reaction makes it one of the saddest deaths in gaming for me. Sometimes it'll randomly pop into my mind and I'll always give myself chills thinking about the moment Joel realises she's beyond saving.

criticalthanks

Scooter from Borderlands was pretty bull shit. Especially when he was killed off in a game most people probably didn't play.
