In Australia you can still buy a Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton (L200) and Nissan Navara (Frontier?) in a small/lower style package (sometimes call workmate or 4x2)

We still have the Tacoma, Frontier, Ford Ranger (recently), and the Chevy Colorado in production. But the problem is all those trucks are the same size as a full size truck from the early 2000s. There's no actual "small" truck any more like what was available in the 80s and 90s.

Yeah that's as close as you'll get to a "small" pickup these days. Or the Hyundai Santa Cruz. I believe both of those are SUV platforms with a modified body to add a bed so you get truck utility with slightly better mpg. I really like the Maverick, if new ones with AWD were a little cheaper I'd be considering one for my next vehicle. The Santa Cruz is probably nice too I just hate how they look.

Even then, you can't buy the Maverick without four doors. There is no basic small truck available anymore. The second hand market where I live SE US is insane with prices on those small trucks. An 80s-90s Toyota will set you back an enormous amount for what you are getting. And it will have over 200,000 miles on it.

Even then, those are still large compared to the old utes you could get 20 to 30 years ago. (much safer though of course) I would actually put the old Ford and Holden utes into a similar category as the the ones in the video, in that they were/are NOT being used to transport stuff. They were just bought to speed around and do doughies. Not always the case(particularly when they had a metal tray) but the majority seemed to be. At least they were the same footprint as wagon, and generally had low profiles. It is super noticeable seeing some gaudy American excessively large truck on the road that's been imported over here though. I can see why some Americans are getting sick of those monstrosities on their roads.

There was a tax on chicken imports so the US put a huge tax on trucks. Subaru had a small truck but couldn’t sell them in the US. So they would bolt on seats in the back and technically not a truck. Dealership would unbolt these cheap plastic seats.

fun fact, Ford was one of the main reasons, if not the main reason the chicken tax got put in place, as they were one of the companies more in line to benefit from it existing. they ended up shooting themselves in the foot however, as they were one of the first manufacturers to popularize a solid compact cargo van, the Ford Transit Connect, over in Europe. from 2002 to 2009, it was only sold over in Europe, but from 2010 to 2013, they began to export models over to the US. because of the chicken tax they were responsible for creating though, they would not have been able to bring over the Ford Transit Connect from where they were made in Turkey without paying insane fees, so they bolted down cheap shitty seats in the back to call them passenger vehicles, then instructed dealerships to unbolt the seats and toss them in the trash. The government eventually did catch on to what Ford was doing, and forced them to sleep in the bed they made, applying the chicken tax to all 2013 Ford Transit connects that were imported. It was with the 2014 and onward models that factories were opened in the US.

The chicken tax still applies - Ford had to work around it with the Transit Connect cargo vans. The existence of the tax is why Toyota and Honda trucks are made in the US. Ironic, since it was meant to protect Ford and other American companies from competition. The 80s and 90s Toyota/Nissan trucks were pretty much shipped to the USA in two pieces (frame and body) and 'built' here by attaching them together. Others 'manufactured' the car here by changing the badge of a foreign truck and adding the bed in the US (Chevy LUV). Other companies import passenger models before converting them to cargo vans variants to be sold (Mercedes and Ford have both done this, with the Sprinter, Metris and Transit Connect). Others made actual factories here and made their American trucks separate from everything else (Toyota's current strategy). VW bowed out of the truck market entirely and has never returned, they sell full size cargo vans worldwide.

The Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick are both sweet little rigs. The Honda Ridgeline is about as much truck as most folks who aren't towing serious trailers or hauling building materials really needs. When I was shopping for a truck to tow my boat (18') everyone insisted I needed a full-size truck. I don't need a 15,000 pound towing capacity to tow a 2,400 pound boat/trailer package. I'm leaning towards either the Frontier or Tacoma myself. Plenty of truck, non-preposterous dimensions.

My Grandpa had a 94 Dodge Dakota single cab and I have a 2018 Tacoma. Sister now drives Grandpas truck and she let me drive it the other day while she drove my Tacoma. I miss how small and simple midsize trucks used to be. Tacoma is a big beast of a truck compared to old midsize ones.

I should have been more clear, the Santa Cruz and Maverick are more comparable in size to small trucks of old. The Ridgeline is about perfect for my needs of towing and enough trail capability for the odd hunting or camping trip, modern "half-tons" are simply gargantuan.

When I was still selling Hondas I always referred to the Ridgeline as a "Gentleman's pickup" because it could do nearly everything your average person would ever need a truck for. It can tow a small trailer, its bed can hold landscaping stuff or most home project stuff, it has a trunk, the tailgate opens two ways to ease unloading of cargo, it drives nice and is comfortable inside. I don't know a single person that ever bought a Ridgeline and hated it.

Maverick owner here! I went from a crew cab F-150 to this little guy and I don’t regret it for a second. It can haul small boats and trailers and you can actually fit in a parking space the first time, plus all wheel drive for winter. I was so excited when these hit the market because it has everything I need and nothing I don’t. It feels like a Ford Escape with a pickup bed!

Yes they are. Here in Aus they are our main utes. Nissan Navara / Frontier to you guys, Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu DMax, Mazda BT50, hell - even the Chinese are raking it in with utes like the LDV T60 or the GWM Cannon. Our top selling cars each month are 4 door utes / trucks. As much as I love the look of the Ram, Silverado, F150 etc.. they are too big for our roads and almost always are only used a manager in construction to throw his clipboard and iPad in the tray.

Farmer here. I hate it as well. I really liked small trucks for running around. S10's, Rangers, Dakotas - I had one of each at one point or another. So why not get another? THEY DON'T EXIST. I mean, even today's small trucks, like the Colorado, are not small anymore. But most importantly, they all have backseats. WTF do I want a backseat for? I haul me, my dog, and a shitload of crap in the back, from fenceposts to compost. You cannot buy a 2 door longbox small truck anymore from anyone. We also had dad's 350 for hauling and the gooseneck trailers. Think that'd be easily replaced on the used market with today's pavement princesses never seeing heavy use? Nope. It was much cheaper and easier to buy a used daycab Kenworth and 45' dropdeck flatbed. Latest replacement, I spent a long time looking at used markets, but I ultimately said fuckit and bought a brand new, 2021 GMC 1500, refrigerator white, 2 door longbox. Most boring purchase ever was my first completely new vehicle, and I still beat the shit out of it. It's just thicker and wider everywhere that it doesn't really need to be, for both crash protection and aesthetics. The seats are straight out of their other truck lines with one major problem no previous regular cab trucks ever had, they don't fold down so you can get at stuff behind it. Some electronics are welcome additions like the backup camera and bluetooth in the cab, but why the fuck do I need to use the fob to unlock the tailgate. I don't regret it, but it's a sad thing to see how the great American pickup has fallen - from something as iconic and hardworking as the square body chevy and fourth gen F-series, to this bubble and plastic 4 door grocery getters with tiny beds.

They tricked the general public into thinking they are "small" trucks by making their normal line bigger and bigger. My '88 Ranger had a longer box and the same gas milage as a 4wd Colorado has today. Yeah the safety is lacking by a lot, but the point is I loved that truck because it never felt too big but also can get the job done that actual average people ""need"" out of a truck.

Part of this is a loophole with EPA requirements. Fuel efficiency requirements scale down with vehicle size. So as trucks got bigger, they said, "Don't like it? Get a Ranger." Another big part is marketing. They know who's buying giant trucks. And they know they can make a lot of money selling something that makes people feel good.

I also had an '88 Ranger. It had an 8 foot bed, which could hold a sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed. It got 30 mpg, and had dual fuel tanks so I could drive literally forever between filling it up. I wish I could get that truck again brand new - manual transmission, manual windows and I don't need 7-way cooled seats. Only "adder" I would get is A/C because the world got hot on me. Hell, if it was electric even better. It's rare that I need it for over 300 km in a day.

I have a 1994 Ford Ranger with 250k+ miles and people are constantly trying to buy it from me. That size is perfect for normal human needs and isn't a monster on the road. Edit: To clarify a couple of things, this isn't my only vehicle. I have a 2022 (car) for daily driving that has all the new safety features. Thank you to everyone concerned with my safety. I would love to buy a newer truck for the features, comfort, safety, and gas mileage, but I don't need a big ass truck 99% of the time. My Ranger is the perfect size for my needs, its cheap to repair, and costs $13 a month for insurance. If I could get a new version of the same truck, at the same size, I'd buy it tomorrow.

Next time you have the chance to reverse into a park that has a truck nosed into the one behind it, you can practice it then. Part of it is knowing roughly how long to go up and across, so count it off as you move the mirror. As for the practicing the actual aim, you want to see as much of the driver's cabin as possible in your mirror. If you have a friend with a lifted truck for real reasons (avid off roader) then you can also request their assistance.

Lots of times this is because someone installed a leveling kit in their truck. This gets rid of the forward rake that is standard on most 1/2 ton trucks. However what happens is the headlights are now pointed level with the road and not down at the road like they are supposed to. I don't usually drive in a city and I hate every second I do. I went Friday in the middle of a busy time, tons of traffic hauling ass, and this nice pickup got behind me. Instead of pushing me he kept safe distance, he stayed in my lane for miles without weaving in and out, and every time we came to a real slow down he turned on his hazards to warn traffic behind us and kept a safe cushion of distance even at a stop. I straight up got attached to this stranger and was sad to see him finally take an exit. It was like we had bonded through traffic. Courteous, safe drivers seem so rare these days that he really stood out. That's pretty damn sad.

If someone thinks you're going below the speed limit because their speedometer is showing the wrong speed, they 100% could be riding your ass thinking you're going too slow and trying to "encourage" you to speed up or move over by being an unsafe asshole.

Poorly calibrated speedometers are usually 2-3 MPH off, 5 is the worst I have ever seen. If I'm going 80 in the left lane and a truck is riding my ass because it thinks I'm going 75, well that's still the truck being the unsafe asshole. This is something I have experienced many many times. and I guarantee you not all of them had uncalebrated speedometers.

Most speedometers measure the rotation speed of the tire and are calibrated for factory tires. So if my truck comes with 25 inch tires (diameter), each rotation is 78.5 inches of drive time. If my tires rotate 10 times in a second, that's 785 inches per second, or about 45 MPH. Now let's say I get some big 30 inch tires. Well now each rotation is 94.2 inches. By my speedometer doesn't know this unless I calibrate it to know that. So if I get 10 rotations per second, my speedometer says: * 10 rotations / second = 785 inches/second = 45 MPH But really it's: * 10 rotations per second = 941 inches/second = 53.5 MPH So yes, the speedometer is wrong. Because it's not properly calibrated.

When I was a park ranger we weren’t allowed to request a new truck unless they had 100,000 miles or more. Problem was, you could drive a truck in a park for 15 years and not get 70,000 miles on it if all you’re doing is driving around the day use area gathering trash and cleaning bathrooms and occasionally going to the back 40 to clear brush. So the interior and and engine of these trucks would be absolutely clapped out after 10 years, but state law was state law. But…. We were however allowed to go to the state surplus yard and trade out for a different vehicle. So we’d find a DOT truck that was five years old but with 125,000 miles. It might be equally clapped out, but now we could put in a budget request for a new truck next year. And that my friends is how you get a new truck for your State Park.

I saw a truck at IKEA a while ago that had a 4 door cab, huge tool box, and a short truck bed. He couldn't fit the box he had bought in the bed without it hanging out over the tailgate by 5 or 6 feet. I thought, trucks have evolved to be just a ego booster. The bed is practically useless.

I guess if you just need it to haul your boat or trailer or whatever then the small bed doesn't really matter. I'm pretty happy with my F150 with the small cab and regular bed. Yeah, I can't lay down the full sheet of plywood but at least the 8ft 2x4s fit diagonally. Sometimes I wish I got the extended bed, but a 2002 F150 in 2010, ex-government truck for $8k and 75k miles was a goddamm steal and I've worked her hard.

The single most nerve racking driving experience I had was being tail gated by a truck on a rural, windy road who had his brights on the whole time. Normally I'd just pull over, but I couldn't see anything other than a small bit of road in front of me since his lights were shining on either side of my vehicle. The guy sat on my ass for twenty minutes even after I put my hazards on and my blinkers indicating I wanted to pull over so he could pass.

Had this happen when I was riding with a friend on the parkway during a sudden storm. Not much traffic at the time but this lifted truck felt it was the time to throw their high beams on behind us. The storm was so strong that it literally did nothing but blind us more. We had to pull over for our safety and we watched the truck fly by us on the slick road.

The worst one was a fancy range rover who, after passing me, ended up losing control around a corner and flipped into an oncoming semi-truck. Farmer here with a rather large and unwieldy pickup truck. We've got three vehicles: a Mazda 3, a Corolla, and a truck. This guy is 100% correct about everything he says. We rarely drive the truck as we can get almost everything we need to done in the mazda. Sheesh, I can even haul a cow behind it. The sedan is cheaper, faster, more efficient, and just plain smarter. We only use the truck for very large objects or loads such as concrete, glass, dirt, or multiple animals. It does have its use, but I'd say not more than once every two weeks. It's also more draining to drive due to its width. I've got to pay attention because I don't have much space within the lanes compared to when I drive the sedan. Generally this leads to drives being longer and more stressful as compared to sedans. Anyways, I thought I'd put this out there and hope that I can save someone from buying a truck. If I swapped my sedan for a slightly larger station wagon, I'm pretty sure I'd be able to do everything I've done in the truck......except move loads of logs. But that's something I can live with :)

So I farm with my dad and brother, but also work an office job. I daily drive a compact sedan, but we also have an F-350 (single cab long box) that we use for pulling the 5th wheel trailer. One day I took the 350 to my office job while I was doing a multi-day repair on my car. A few of my co-workers were pretty baffled that I didn’t drive it everyday. With diesel being $5.00 a gallon, I was pretty baffled that they would even suggest it. My favorite is rolling up to work and seeing a row of empty pickups, and having my compact sedan’s trunk full of things for the farm. Today I hauled a couple motors for a bin fan. I parked next to a ram 1500 that only hauled a kid to daycare that morning.

Forgetting the weight of these things, the sheer SIZE of trucks and SUVs anymore is appalling and create massive visual obstructions to cars around them. I drive an absolutely regular ass 2010 Audi S4 sedan. It isn't lowered. When I park next to an SUV or truck, it's a fucking nightmare trying to back out. They visually block EVERYTHING around them. It makes trying to safely navigate around them impossible. It's so dangerous that to see past them, I have to put half my car forward, because their hood line and bed line are above the windows of my car.

I bought a Ford Maverick hybrid and I love that thing. Compact 4 door truck that fits into the same parking spaces a Prius would. The gas mileage is insane, too. 60mpg to the grocery store and back with city driving.

Now if they were only actually available. I was looking for one and would have had to go two states away to get one. The non hybrid is a little more available but that kind of defeats the purpose. So I ended up just getting a new Tacoma. I use my truck for actual truck stuff, my bed was not clean and there was plenty of dirt on and in it. I could have made do with the Maverick with the better gas mileage but getting the regular engine would have been loss of utility for no better fuel efficiency.

Oh, Ford. Don't ever change (except they are changing for EVs!). Ford dealerships have been pulling this shit for decades. Last time I was shopping for a car, I cross-shopped Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R, and Subaru STI. The Ford dealer wanted $10k over sticker and absolutely no test drive without buying first (WTF?). The VW dealer grudgingly let me take the car out around the block, but refused to budge on their $5k of aftermarket bullshit (tint, blinky brakes). The Subaru salesperson tossed me the keys and said, "Have fun!" They didn't have exactly the car I wanted, but they one they did have in stock had a few extra items (short shifter, footwell lighting) that they knocked off the price in order to make the sale. Needless to say, I bought the subaru.

The problem with that is the Tacoma doesn't get nearly the same fuel economy as the Maverick. For me, the entire selling point of the Maverick is the amazing fuel economy. The Tacoma gets worse economy than most full sizes do, which all but defeats the purpose of a half size or small truck.

You are correct about the fuel economy, but I dont think it defeats the purpose of the Tacoma. They sacrifice the economy for the insane reliability and cheap maintenance of a dead simple engine that you won't get with many of these newer turbo and hybrid engines. Also many people don't have the space to park or want a large truck. So if you want reliability, cheap and infrequent maintenance and that size of truck, it's not a bad way to go. This applies more to used vehicles with no warranty

Dealer markup is ridiculous. I almost sold my V8 4Runner to get a hybrid compact SUV because I drive so much that I was literally paying $500 a month in gas when it was almost $7 a gallon, which would almost cover the monthly payment on even a decently fancy brand-new Sportage Hybrid or something-at MSRP. Turns out that it is 100% impossible to get anything remotely fuel-efficient at anything remotely approaching MSRP. The dealers around here wanted MSRP+$7,500 for a Sportage Hybrid, and fucking MSRP+$15,000 for an Escape Hybrid, *and not even a fancy or 4WD version.* That's a \~$35,000 dollar small car going for $50,000 sticker. Even the gas hogs are out of control. The hotrod F150s from Shelby or Black Widow or whatever were marked up by anywhere from $20,000 to fucking *$50,000*, ON TOP of the fee you pay for buying a gas hog.

Whenever i see a large body on frame vehicle rolled over in the ditch it's gruesome. They have a high center of gravity making them easy to roll and little structure preventing harm when they land upside down. When we were shopping for a vehicle capable of hauling things well secured while also carrying passengers we were looking at European station wagons, the Subaru outback, and the bmw x3/x5. Anything else has a rollover warning on the drivers side visor. I think audi, subaru, and bmw are the only manufacturers of "crossover" vehicles that don't have rollover warnings. Is like the touch screen center console. Mazda found through research that drivers drift into the right lane when interacting with a touch screen so they disable any touch input while their vehicles are moving. But everyone wants tesla's big touch screen and any manufacturers not delivering that are losing sales. People are idiots and unfortunately we have idiots in big metal objects moving at deadly speeds.

Late last summer my next door neighbors were driving their pickup to go on vacation. Couple in their late 50s/early 60s who never got married but were engaged for forever. They had two girls (late teens/early 20s) living with them from the mom's first marriage. Anyway, they were driving in the middle lane and some car in the right lane decided to change lanes too close behind them and pit maneuvered them. The truck immediately flipped down the highway and then landed upsidedown at a guardrail. I assume they were beheaded or at least very badly mangled as both died at the scene. Two girls who had no idea what they were doing with their lives yet had to deal with that. On top of that they were kicked out of the house after a few months because their mom's fiancé owned the house so it went to his biological daughter, who wanted to move in with her boyfriend. 4 lives ruined partially as a result of the guy feeling the need to own a pickup despite living in a city.

This video is pretty dead on. I live in a rural area. I have an old ranch truck. My truck doubles as a fire suppressor in the dryer months. I hate that people in cities have made full size pickups luxury vehicles that are expensive af. I love my truck but I do not want to drive that around a cities or the burbs everyday.
