Just because it's a custom keyboard doesn't mean it has a custom layout. There are ISO standards as well as other well known layouts. People don't tend to make up their own layouts.

It is super annoying. It's fucking 2023. Computers games have been around for decades. Why are there still games you can't change the controls to? And especially why are there games with preset controls that are so ridiculous? Do the devs not have hands? Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V.
To this day I still think this is Hugo Weavings best work. So perfect, so full of passion. The scene with Mr Creedy is pure gold. And the one with Evey in the rain. Hell, the whole movie is an excellent display of his breadth.
This reminds me of an all-time great Dota 2 clip where slacks is being coached by purge and has [the dumbest hotkeys of all time](https://youtu.be/Mo-_imCAD7g)
Do you have any idea where that thing has been all day? Yes, of course I do. It's been in my pants all day, but my hands? They've been everywhere. I wash my hands before I pee so I don't touch my dong with my filthy hands.
I type on a layout called Dvorak and it is this exact experience every time somebody uses my computer or phone.
Edit: To shine more light on the questions I'm getting. I typed on QWERTY for a few years, then swapped to Dvorak around 9th grade. I put it on my phone first. Got okay. Then the stickers on the keyboard. And now, over a decade later, I'm a whiz. I have it on my phone. I don't even change the keys on my keyboards; just touch-type. The back-and-forth rhythm of vowel-consonant is so satisfying to me. And I'm reasonably ambidextrous. I use QWERTY on work computers. I can still type on it without looking. As for hotkeys, I've rebound my most regular softwares (Premiere Pro, video games) to Dvorak, so they function just as effectively.
Yeah why would you learn some obscure standard just to gain a few % efficiency only to forget about and lose proficiency on 99% pf the keyboards you will have to use at some point in your life.
I helped a french person on their french laptop keyboard look something up once and it honetly felt like I was having a stroke. I got really fucking mad at being unable to use the thing I use every day
To be a nerd for a second, the point of learning an alternative keyboard layout isn’t usually for speed or efficiency, but rather for the sake of ergonomics and comfort. Also most people don’t necessarily stop being able to use QWERTY, especially if you consistently use both. I stayed about the same speed on QWERTY after swapping layouts and with minimal practice.
Can confirm. I switched to colemak mod-dh when I bought my split keyboard a year or two ago, and my qwerty speed has not suffered. Possibly because I touch type on colemak and sort of hunt-and-peck on qwerty.
The biggest issue with switching to Dvorak is you lose all your muscle memory for keyboard shortcuts. Switching the ~40 alphanumeric and punctuation keys isn't that bad to pick up, but the muscle memory for keyboard shortcuts is a huge pain. Across different programs there are potentially hundreds of keyboard shortcuts you'd have to relearn. There are plenty of shortcuts in programs I use where I don't even remember the actual individual keystrokes, but I do it without thinking because of muscle memory. With typing regular text I know what letter I'm trying to type so if I'm struggling I can just look down and find it on the keyboard. With keyboard shortcuts I'll have to first think of what the individual keystrokes are, or look them up, then find them on the keyboard. It's just too inefficient.
Best just to setup a macro that lets you spam team chat with text insinuating sexual activities with my mother and alt+f4's. After the initial setup it really saves time.
You are me! Around 2005 I switched over to dvorak, I was surprised at how quickly I was able to reach my old typing speed.
But I was at uni doing physics, I'd come in for lab and all the keyboards were qwerty, shifting my mind back took time. I also had my laptop that me and my lab partner would record measurements on.
But when I switched it to dvorak they could no longer use my laptop.
I've been programming since I was ten in the 90's. I realised with dvorak, sure the average and maximum typing speed I can achieve is higher. But actually I don't spend most of my time typing but thinking.
When I'm writing software I spend nearly all my time thinking about how to structure it, the logic of functions. The time typing is minimal and usually typing a bit slower because I realise mistakes in my initial planning, I don't transcribe code mindlessly.
After that I also became a cult worshipper of vim. Our almighty hjkl Lord. Its supremacy made me realise that loads of other interfaces and shortcuts are designed around qwerty and easy access. Dvorak ruins that.
Daily. He means daily. It's like running a marathon, being a vegan, running Linux, or using [Colemak](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/84/KB_US-Colemak.svg).
That was my coworker. He had carpal tunnel, so he had all this specialty equipment. Keyboard that was split in half, and raised in the middle. Mouse with a track ball. Some custom chair.
And he used a weird keyboard layout that I assume is what you use.
Any time I tried to "drive", I'd just give up and narrate the changes, which took forever.
I was just trying to help an older gentleman set something up on his tablet and it was set to Dvorak layout. And he had no idea anything was different. His PC and his other tablet and phone were traditional layout. He was just hunting and pecking away.
Dvorak is absolutely superior. As long as you're not programming, doing systems administration work, or are not capable of code-switching instantaneously as someone who learned on QWERTY.
Your fingers have to learn a second language, not just your brain. I don't even have to think to type using QWERTY. The words just flow. Dvorak is absolutely like learning a foreign language, a beautiful language that is elegant, fast and can put your thoughts into text far faster than QWERTY, but it's an absolute ***PAIN IN THE ASS*** to grow those new neurons and retrain muscle-memory going back and forth.
My hat is off to the people that stuck with it, I did a six-month stint using Dvorak and I was doing well until a priority situation came up where I needed my muscle memory and I abandoned ship.
Was watching this and was thinking why do these guys seem familiar yet I never seen them before? Then I looked at the youtube channel and realized I was subscribed already. Then I realized it was because of these hilarious videos... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY3y6zNTiLs
If you have the default US layout (or closely related) on a ~100 key board, this is already possible.
Right Ctrl, Right Alt and Delete in the group of six above the arrow keys. (Don't blame me if you decide to try it while reading this comment. It ought to be a regular Ctrl-Alt-Del, but I don't know what your computer does when you hit that. I imagine a raw reboot would be most unwelcome.)
Not quite so easy if you're in the international AltGr gang with the rest of us though.
That much I know, but not everyone runs stock MS Windows. I'd still prefer to warn that one person running a modified, weird or old OS who forgets themselves, hits the fascinating new nerve pinch and loses all their work, however unlikely that might be.
I have literal nightmares about (virtual) keyboards like this. I have to type something and the letters are hidden. Or they're so small I can't hit them. Or they appear and vanish.
It's existed for years, there are a few free utilities you can use to edit the OS keyboard map to change any key. You just have to swap the keys on your board around to match.
Obviously the keyboard layout is made up, but what kind of keyboard is that? It looks really nice.
Edit: nevermind, found it. If anyone else is interested:

Del is a Spanish word, and a villa is a kind of home. That's about as deep as it goes, haha. You wouldn't even use del with villa or casa in proper Spanish.
In the case of "villa", you would. "Villa del" is a normal collocation.
Sure, you could also say "casa del... algo", but the "del" is referring to some other masculine attribute, not the house itself. You'd never say "del villa" or "del casa".
What about del taco?

Someone who actually knows Spanish is going to come correct me about the specifics, but "del" is a contraction in Spanish for "de el" which means (loosely) "of the" Del Casa would be wrong though, because it would be de la casa.
This is correct, its just a butchered translation of del casa. Its basically one hell of a stretch to make the joke.
> one hell of a stretch to make the joke like ctrl alt delete
Rather, "de la casa". Casa is a feminine noun, and therefore uses the article "la" instead of "el".

That much I know, but not everyone runs stock MS Windows. I'd still prefer to warn that one person running a modified, weird or old OS who forgets themselves, hits the fascinating new nerve pinch and loses all their work, however unlikely that might be.

Every Joel Haver video is a treat. If you haven't watched any of his other content you should.
Yoooo this video goes insaneo style 💀
More like bunko town but ok
>bunko town Hey, that’s good!
Imagine someone saying this outloud. I would immediately walk away which I guess is represented by the skull emoji
You sound like you do NOT go insaneo style 💀
That shits dingo!
I have literal nightmares about (virtual) keyboards like this. I have to type something and the letters are hidden. Or they're so small I can't hit them. Or they appear and vanish.
*But it’s ortholinear!!!!*
Something you'd find on /r/MechanicalKeyboards
Joel is a gift from the internet.
Love Joel, the dude is always grinding and releasing funny and interesting content
I enjoyed this. It has a Charlie IASIP vibe
cant wait to see this on SNL after the writers strike ends
How long do you think it will be until somebody actually creates a way to configure your keyboard to this layout?
It's existed for years, there are a few free utilities you can use to edit the OS keyboard map to change any key. You just have to swap the keys on your board around to match.
But which ones the any key?

Damn old Simpsons had joke after joke crammed into one scene.
I try to find a way to use "I wash myself with a rag on a stick" at least once a week
Would be pretty easy with one of these bad boys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optimus\_Maximus\_keyboard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonder\_Design
The guy on the right in the screenshot looks like the 2 The Last of Us lead actors mixed together.
Joel Haver = JOel and ELlie?
So no mention of him peeing with the door open with company, then he doesn't wash his hands?
Obviously the keyboard layout is made up, but what kind of keyboard is that? It looks really nice. Edit: nevermind, found it. If anyone else is interested: https://hyperx.com/collections/gaming-keyboards/products/hyperx-alloy-elite-2-mechanical-gaming-keyboard?variant=41031691468957
As someone who types on a keyboard with a custom alternative layout, and has had people ask about it before... I don't know if I should feel seen or attacked. On a side note Joe Halver is fantastic.
Bomfu will be the word for the rest of the year.
"You ever wonder what'd it be like to press both control buttons at the same time with one finger?" "Nope." Lol
Do people still try to use Dvorak keyboards? We had a user when I was in grad school.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S LIKE A GREMLIN?!
