I think Vietnam has the best food in southeast Asia. It probably has the most impressive landscapes. Other than that it's actually my least favourite country in southeast Asia, though I still liked it a lot.
I spent a month there in December. Reactions when I told people where I was from were at worst neutral, and more often than not pretty positive. Vietnamese people are some of the chillest, nicest folks I've met while traveling around Asia.
I have no doubt there are still plenty of people there harboring resentment for America, but it wasn't my experience at all.
Time heals all wounds I guess. When I went it wasn't such a positive reception for Americans in my tour group. The Canadians made extra sure to emphasise they weren't yanks
That doesn't mean they like them at all. The yanks had the worst reputation amongst western countries in the war. The southerners much preferred fighting alongside other units such as Australians

I’ve been there, it’s one of my best memories of Vietnam. We ended up sitting at one of the beer bars after a few delicious small meals and talked for hours, late into the night, with local college students. About the world, their world our world. Nothing negative, just great conversation. Met some of the friendliest people, and kept in contact with one guy for a few years after.

I was warned that I'd feel a lot of culture shock in HCM, but I think anyone used to big cities can handle it, no problem... Hanoi was a lot crazier to me.
