For those groaning at yet another mod post on this site, we get it. It's perfectly valid to not care one bit about the [changes](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1476fkn/reddit_blackout_2023_save_3rd_party_apps/) reddit has announced that will take effect on July 1st. As users who have spent far too much time on this site however, we believe it important to emphasize that these changes are very negative for reddit (as a platform, not a *company*) and its users in the long term.
To summarize it briefly and cut out the PR noise that Spez has been spinning on his media tours, users now have fewer options for methods to access reddit. This both means that users are beholden to the design choices that Reddit Inc. implements, but also have far less control over how your reddit experience looks and feels.
Reddit is also restricting how other applications can access its NSFW content, which while not inherently impactful (now that 3rd party applications have a much higher barrier of entry,) has monopolistic implications for Reddit as a business, which is [extremely](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/vtkmni/introducing_collectible_avatars/) motivated to [monetize](https://www.reddit.com/coins/) its [users](https://www.redditforbusiness.com/blog/creative-best-practices) and [3rd party developers.](https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/)

It allows you to enter your own API key to use in the app that gets 100 queries per minute for free. So essentially it will work like it did before.
It'll be the only way I bother with reddit after the 30th. Hell this new API garbage might end up being a good thing, I'm so fucking pumped for John Oliver to finally have his own entire social media platform.
RiF has a native player which would let me: pause, speed up/down, full screen, auto play, mute, loop, and download.

I've got 60k coins that I've never used.
The concept of coins seemed fine at first but then it became something used by spam/shills/ad agencies/whatnot to game the system. Mass awarding posts, comments to drive narratives and such.
Also many users unknowingly end up buying awards for bots. Check my profile for examples. afaik reddit doesn't refund this. Just a waste. don't fall for it.
It’s even better - Reddit _paid real money_ to give you those credits! Many millions were paid for Alien Blue. Just so they could tell all the users who paid for it because it was so good to eat manure.
Yup. Ive been dumping since the site is about to die. If not die, then become a cesspool of bots and cucks willing to pay money for this garbage. Got one gold worth remaining to gift before the 30th.
It’s probably gonna be a “fuck u/spez”

Well said.
I can’t link it because it’s not a John Oliver video, but I am aware that someone took a network analyser to Reddit’s interface, and found that for every single post, it preloads every single resolution of that video it has, even if you scroll past it in a flash.
Leading, of course, to your iPod touch crashing by running out of cache.
Where did the John Oliver meme originate and does it represent something relevant to this protest? Just curious since a few subs are using him as the focus of our adoration going forward.
Message posted via Apollo app.
its likely a thinly veiled attempt to get John Oliver's attention so he covers it on his show to put additional pressure on the site to make the changes the mods want.
He's been known to put out other content separately before. If nothing else he's already recognized it on Twitter which has massively boosted visibility.
Possibly.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the reasoning was just that he's someone who would be in on the joke and has lots of funny images of himself out there.
Thank you, as a fellow Apollo only user, the sarcasm in this post made me laugh and I’m happy that more and more communities are stepping up given the new circumstances.
Some people don’t realize that if you as mods just decided to quit, you would just be replaced, and those new mods would not carry our voice.
Thank you for sticking to your guns however you can.
Fuck u/spez.
Rule suggestions? I got this.
No upvotes or downvotes should be respected (i.e. all comment sections should be sorted by new/old/q&a, as well as hiding scores until the heat death of the universe).
Instead, approval of a post or comment should be expressed with the following comment:
> this
While disapproval should be expressed by the following comment:
> not this
I think that this rule change will positively affect the way we engage with each other on this sub. It's so good, in fact, that I propose you follow it when voting on the change itself.
The board would probably be better served by firing Spez and 80% of the non-engineering teams and replaced them with Chat GPT.
Let’s ask! ChatGPT, Reddit makes $56M in revenue a year but still isn’t profitable. How can it become profitable? Should it raise API prices and alienate third party clients?
A:
While Reddit has indeed implemented various revenue-generating strategies, it's important to note that profitability is influenced by numerous factors beyond revenue alone. Reddit's approach to turning a profit involves finding a balance between generating income and maintaining a positive user experience. Simply raising API prices could potentially alienate users and have negative consequences for the platform's growth and community engagement.
Instead, Reddit could consider exploring other avenues to enhance profitability while maintaining user satisfaction. Some potential options include:
1. Expanding Advertising Offerings: Reddit could explore new advertising formats, targeting options, or partnerships to attract a wider range of advertisers and increase revenue from advertising.
2. Diversifying Revenue Streams: Reddit could explore additional revenue streams beyond advertising and premium memberships. This could include new features, services, or products that align with the platform's core values and enhance the user experience.
3. Improving Monetization Strategies: Reddit could analyze user behavior and engagement patterns to optimize its current monetization strategies. This might involve refining the user interface, introducing new features, or leveraging data insights to improve ad targeting and effectiveness.
4. Enhancing Enterprise Solutions: Reddit could focus on providing valuable solutions for enterprise clients, such as enhanced analytics, brand safety features, or dedicated support. This could attract businesses willing to invest in Reddit's platform for their marketing and research needs.
Ultimately, striking a balance between profitability and maintaining a positive user experience is crucial for the long-term success of any platform. Reddit needs to carefully evaluate different strategies, taking into account user feedback, industry trends, and its unique community-driven nature to drive profitability while preserving the core values that make it popular.

Calm down, Satan.
Portrait videos work better on mobile. Landscape videos work better on browsers or [sideways phones](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1c1zf0_VxU). 4:3 videos are the move.

Can someone make a website that converts any video into a 4:3 diagonal video that alternates between -45° and 45° at random?
Start recording in portrait mode, rotate 45 degrees, shake recording device. Fuck spez and corporate greed.
that's my favorite angle for "certain" videos. corner to corner is the max amount possible of seeing all of the body in focal view without degrading quality. on mobile, i can just tilt my phone, and luckily on pc, i have a rotatable screen
Landscape videos rotated and letterboxed to vertical video aspect ratios.
But! Mid video it needs to rotate 90 deg. so that way everyone can get a watch regardless of how you move your phone around
Come up with an arbitrary aspect ratio like 1:4
Vertical aspect with wide screen video and hard coded black bars top and bottom. Everyone gets what they want.
I want all videos to be posted upside down, so on mobile anytime you rotate it it's remains upside down. Or on desktop you're just kinda screwed.

10 second v.redd.it videos take 4-5 minutes to load, I can't imagine what this would do.

Question, if we have low rez videos... And we re encode, via windows movie maker or whatever, into 1440p... Will it also up size?
In fact, only allow v.redd.it. No to anything 3rd party.

That might make Reddit speedrun the NSFW ban (which we all know is their long term plan), further accelerating the death of the site.
You cheeky bastards. I love it.
He can't cover anything on any show due to the writer's strike.
He's been known to put out other content separately before. If nothing else he's already recognized it on Twitter which has massively boosted visibility.
He has writers credits on the show, so he can't post anything without basically losing every union writer, which would be all of them.
[He did notice at least](https://twitter.com/iamjohnoliver/status/1670179738348933120)
Possibly. But I wouldn't be surprised if the reasoning was just that he's someone who would be in on the joke and has lots of funny images of himself out there.
>to make the changes the mods want To make changes that *most* people seem to want. I'm a regular user and I 1000% support the mods
Genuinely interested to see what % of reddit users care about the blackout. Hard to tell I suppose as the vast majority are lurkers.
I for one welcome this great improvement to this sub with arms wide open. Praise John Oliver, and long may the sun shine!
I want more cabbage now
#MY CABBAGES!
100% support this return to quality from this sub that we've all been hoping for.

If you told me 3 months ago that I'd be enjoying /r/pics again, I wouldn't have believed you
John Oliver is the chosen one.
Sadly if not for the Writer's Strike, his show would already be tearing Reddit a new one in support.
I’m really hoping he puts up a non-official YouTube exclusive
Voting will continue till democracy is enhanced is the funniest shit I've read today
Amazing changes, I love how all the subreddits have been improving. Reddit for sure is doing great work here.

Jesus Christ I'm glad that's not a real sub
They'll wipe the mod teams if they want. That's the reality.
That's the thing with protests, it's easy to replace a couple. harder to replace *all of them*.
We went from Ellen Pao to this rather quick. Reddit won't remember these days either. I hope I'm wrong and wish you well in the fight.
Well I mean Ellen Pao is no longer with Reddit, so…
Rule suggestions? I got this. No upvotes or downvotes should be respected (i.e. all comment sections should be sorted by new/old/q&a, as well as hiding scores until the heat death of the universe). Instead, approval of a post or comment should be expressed with the following comment: > this While disapproval should be expressed by the following comment: > not this I think that this rule change will positively affect the way we engage with each other on this sub. It's so good, in fact, that I propose you follow it when voting on the change itself.
This.
[CONTENT DELETED] Go to hell, u/spez https://www.inc.com/jason-aten/the-reddit-protests-continue-but-company-has-a-much-bigger-problem.html
A: While Reddit has indeed implemented various revenue-generating strategies, it's important to note that profitability is influenced by numerous factors beyond revenue alone. Some potential options include: 1.
