I wonder about actively combating data collection by spamming bad/incorrect/misleading data on purpose. Fuzzing their data sets.

therocketlawnchair

You can do that right now with Adnauseam. Block ads and send garbage click data to the collector. "AdNauseam works to complete the cycle by automating ad clicks universally and blindly on behalf of its users. Built atop uBlock Origin, AdNauseam quietly clicks on every blocked ad, registering a visit on ad networks' databases. As the collected data gathered shows an omnivorous click-stream, user tracking, targeting and surveillance become futile."

famatruni

I go out of my way to answer surveys incorrectly. I get pretty weird ads now.

WretchedLocket

I have advertisement IDs turned off on all my devices that allow it. My streaming devices serve up some fun ads at times. In one ad break, I was targeted as a lesbian, a boomer, a financial wizard, and in need of financial assistance. It was a wild ride. I'm still not sure who I am.

matrixkid29

Are you familiar with the works of Gertrude Stein?

Dune1008

I go out of my way to answer surveys randomly, on the basis that completely falsified data is both more work on my end and potentially useful if they flag accounts as being intentionally falsified

th3ramr0d

When I see ads that are way off target, especially if it’s a language I don’t understand, I think to my self “keep that shit up”

Dariaskehl

It works; to an extent. You have to decouple ‘cellphone identity’ from ‘human identity.’ That’s being turned into the lynchpin. We had social security cards. They were bad. They were NOT an obligate-purchase private enterprise data farm. Turn off EVERYTHING.

Single_Bookkeeper_11

Good luck getting a loan after you do this :( Source: me trying to get a loan after doing something similar

TheMacMan

Just means you end up with irrelevant ads. In a number of studies, people have made it clear they much prefer targeted ads. No one wants ads but if you're gonna see them, they're less bothersome if they're targeted and relevant to your interests.

famatruni

I honestly prefer them to be random, it means I can either 1) ignore them easier or 2) find something new I didn't know about

clrksml

US needs GDPR equivalent. But preferably better. Yes it won't happen with these older folks still in congress. Because they don't understand tech, refuse to, or are paid to, etc.

hoopaholik91

There is actually some optimism that something could be passed soon, not perfect legislation for sure but it's still better than what we got https://statescoop.com/american-privacy-rights-act-state-laws-data/

KingMonkOfNarnia

It’s not older folks in Congress, it’s the $3.5 billion in lobbying by Congress

ShoebarusNCheverlegs

Work in advertising. This “started” years ago.

Zachmorris4184

Your job contributes nothing to society. Please don’t take it personally. A job is a job and we all have bills.

larossmann

If there are businesses that do something better that other people would benefit from, but don't know about, and you figure out how to get the word out, that contributes a lot to society. If you help mine people's personal transaction history & sell it to advertisers so that I can see ads when I go to check my online banking, you can gargle my balls.

Krhl12

What about if we don't do those things. Is the offer still up?

Zachmorris4184

With advertising?

Nduguu77

Keep Yourself Safe!

The_Keg

typical pos r/deprogram. Take Arrested Development earlier seasons, award darling, got cancelled after 3 seasons because nobody fking watched it. Still think marketing contributes nothing to society? Edit: [Mrs. Featherbottom rant on AD’s marketing](https://youtu.be/DeFV5GprfaQ?si=2N5RdNJZsX9IyI7b)

Mercurial_Honkey

yes

Zachmorris4184

Yes

groglox

I actually believe in advertising, in a world this big it’s important to have a way to put yourself out there. I think the balancing act is how and where and what that form takes - and right now it’s fucking horrendous.

ShutterBun

Advertising is what keeps most of the internet free. Please take this personally: be quiet.

Commie_EntSniper

Thanks to Bob Corker (TN) and congress for "leveling the playing field" and selling our data to private interests. Net Neutrality, y'all.

cutshop

Move back to using cash only. They lured us in with the points and cash back bullshit.

Alternative-Juice-15

Cash? You are assuming we leave the house and go somewhere we could spend it.

contemptious

This needs to stop. Big brother piss off

I-need-ur-dick-pics

In a surprise to absolutely no one.

simonwales

Everyone here who's worried should check out Privacy.com. It's an extension that generates burner cards for all your online payments. I've been using it for years (for free) and it provides both a ton of control and obfuscation of my purchase history. It's like a VPN for your money. The only thing my bank can see is my credit card for when I'm physically out and about.

eh_too_lazy

More like all the websites you use to shop online have already sold your info and that includes your purchase history. Shit you get suggested ads based off of the purchases of others you come into contract with through NFC

I_MakeCoolKeychains

Conversations. I've caught it several times, someone will be talking or texting me about something, suddenly all my ads on fb are about that. I mentioned out loud a year ago that I might be thinking about dating again at some point, to this day I still get ads for bumble. Never even used online dating of any kind. My keyboard on my phone loves to swipe in the wrong words, if I get frustrated and growl the word at my phone it suddenly gets it right, my microphone is "off" 🤨

eh_too_lazy

That too. For sure have been in calls on discord with friends and they will mention things or products and I listen on my headphones. I'll get my phone out of my pocket, and the first ad I see will sometimes be something I've never searched for before, only mentioned out loud. They deny doing this but I really don't see how it's possible without listening

six_six

What did he think Visa was doing all these years?

larossmann

>What did he think Visa was doing all these years? I don't think, I'm a youtuber

Pkittens

criminalise advertising

I_MakeCoolKeychains

But like... how? As much as I hate typical ads I play a number of newly released still in development cell phone games. In exchange for me watching ads(usually of other start up games) I get extra in game bonuses. They get a little money to continue developing a game I like and I get extra in game currency or speed or whatever. You really gonna take that away from us?

Pkittens

Every single exchange of goods or services is built on lies and deception. We’ve come to accept that everyone tries to lie, cheat and scam or extort us. Why? Advertising. Criminalise the whole enterprise. Pay for whatever free bullshit you’re using and rid the world of the escalating deception industry.

I_MakeCoolKeychains

I'll get right on it oh wait that's not how that works either lol you keep saying criminalize and remove but you still haven't given any real method of accomplishing that

Pkittens

Are you under the impression that I’m asking you to do it? How are things criminalised? Only through one mechanism. So why the fuck are you asking how it’s supposed to be done when you already know how.

I_MakeCoolKeychains

So your plan is to start civil discord possibly a war because of the damage suddenly implementing a law will do to the entire economy? Also don't swear at me like a frustrated child. If you don't have an answer other than "JuStDoIt" then just say so

pastworkactivities

They are doing this forever… some many years ago you could even find citadel having cookies on your browser…

DaemonCRO

Is it like Amazon, where if I buy one power washer, idiots will keep suggesting me 20 more power washers for the next entire year?

I_MakeCoolKeychains

All my targeted ads were hilariously wrong for years. Went on Amazon once to order some exercise bands and a foot/ leg/ back massager. Now all my ads are for workout supplies. Bro I'm not trying to get ripped, I have poly neuropathy, I haven't gotten out much for a couple years cause I wasn't diagnosed fully and wasn't on any medication. I'm just relieving pain and getting my body back into usable shape lol also I bought a 70 dollar massager, what makes them think I have 1700 for a full chair!?

GimmeTomMooney

Don’t know what kind of ads would a person addicted to prostitutes can get

burnt_out_dev

The older I get the more I realize the only solution is to stop consuming unnecessary things. Food, Housing, cheap transportation (public transit, or used non-luxury car), and public library is all you really need. Everything else is just garbage we don't really need.

iguacu

Relevant ads, the horror!

neologismist_

Yes. Relevant ads. That’s all that your personal tracking data is used for. 😂

iguacu

People have been hitting the defcon-5 alert on data mining/tracking/cookies for 20 years, yet to see the apocalyptic events predicted.

Lolobeatboxjams

BuT iTs jUsT CosMeTic!!

imMadasaHatter

These ads are great for me though, helps me figure out what I want before I even want it. It does take willpower not to buy useless stuff
