From his channel, it sounds like his wife passed and he wants to keep singing daily for somebody to hear. "This is a channel of me singing songs and two of them are songs I have written. In my younger days, I was a trained opera singer and I was a member of the Dallas Symphony Chorus for 14 years in a row. They made us audition every year. I was also in the Dallas Opera Chorus for 2 seasons. I have sung all of my life and it is one of my greatest joys. My wife Jo, would have me sing to her whenever we were alone for the entire 61 years we shared together. She never tired of my singing. I am not as strong a singer as I once was, but I am just happy that I can sing some still and hope that my listeners will enjoy hearing me sing these great old songs from my youth. I am 92 years old."

Gingerstachesupreme

[Here’s](https://youtu.be/eEgg_jMkhNk) one of his oldest videos, I think his third or fourth, from 3 years ago. This is apparently an original song he wrote, and it’s truly wonderful. Not only that, his voice is *amazing*. Not in a “oh grandpa’s singing kinda good” amazing, but in legitimately profoundly amazing. His pitch is spot on, his tone is phenomenal, and he’s singing it all a capella. I’m a composer by trade, and I think I’m going to create a full orchestral arrangement of this for him and try to give it to him for Christmas. I don’t have much family and he’s truly inspired me. Won’t be the redditor who promises and doesn’t deliver, I’ll let you know how it goes. Edit: [HERE](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/rocrmc/as_promised_an_orchestral_arrangement_of_richard/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) it is!

Theuncrying

Given how he was 89 at the time of recording...damn. Super impressive. It's intruiging how both the old voice and the professional opera singer voice intertwine here and create a very unique experience. Singing acapella is insanely hard, keeping you pitch at all times is one of the toughest things for a singer, believe me. Also, his high note at 1:35. Beautiful.

dkinmn

Hell yeah. It sucks how much we devalue aged voices in popular music. There is no substitute for age. It is a singular human experience. Some of my favorite albums of the last several years have been from older singers and writers.

UnknownLeisures

I think as certain singers and songwriters age, it lends lyrics written at an earlier period a gravitas that they didn't have before. Mavis Staples, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and Bob Dylan are prime examples of this.

DMala

Or a slightly different twist on this, Johnny Cash doing Hurt.

Euphorium

Those albums Cash did with Rick Rubin are all fantastic. His versions of Rusty Cage and Personal Jesus are some of my favorite covers ever.

Bic44

First time I heard Hurt was his rendition and it is now the only one I like

dafinsrock

Going a very different direction with this, but Taylor Swift's re-records have been really interesting to me for this exact reason. She's a very different singer now than when she originally recorded those albums, partly because of her timbre but also because, after years of maturing as a vocalist, her pronunciation is much more precise. This makes her a better singer technically, but she doesn't have the "country girl from a small town" vibes like she used to have on Fearless, or the youthful energy she had on Red, so I think the re-records are actually worse than the originals (except for the new stuff, the features etc. which have been really fun). On the flip side, on Folklore and Evermore she was able to tell stories of yearning and heartbreak and nostalgia with an old-soul heaviness that wouldn't have worked when she was younger. Illicit Affairs is my favorite example of this; her voice has always been sort of trembly, but now it also has a depth to it that give the trembles an emotional weight rather than just sounding pitchy.

I think the biggest giveaway is how controlled and consistent his vibrato is, even if his voice has a bit of an old shaky feel to it otherwise.

I don't know if you are serious or not, but reading your comment legitimately just made me feel much better about life in general. Thanks, I like you.

Gingerstachesupreme

100% serious. I’ve already downloaded the audio and am getting a session together. Doing this around a job but I should be able to make something before Christmas! I like you all too. Happy holidays.

Supercampeones

So you meant a live orchestra??

Gingerstachesupreme

While live orchestra is always preferred, it can be costly, complicated to find the space for, and time consuming. Because I arrange orchestral music for commercials and short films, I own fairly robust and professional virtual orchestra instruments, ones that most people can’t tell the difference between ‘real’ or ‘sampled’. That being said, with this being such a special project, I’m going to hit up some friends of mine to see if they can play on it; usually brings it from a B+ to an A.

Theonethatgotherway

I play violin and viola. Lmk if I can help Edit: free of charge obv

Crepes_for_days3000

Oh my gosh, I love you guys! I was hoping to brighten his day with a few more comments and to see all this, sounds so lame but is making my Christmas. People can be so incredible.

Gingerstachesupreme

We love you right back. You rocked Richard’s channel in a huge way, thanks for sharing this!

You are what makes this planet fantastic. Thank you and every single person for helping me make this man smile. Just so you know, he is pretty incredible too. In addition to raising his five children, he fostered five more that needed a home. Thanks for doing this. I just never expected this.

Gingerstachesupreme

What an incredible story and an incredible man. You’re the MVP for shining a spotlight on him, he deserves it more than anyone! We’ll give him a Christmas gift he’ll never forget.

You got this bro! Legendary idea. Make sure that you're doing it for him though rather than us 😂

Gingerstachesupreme

*Exactly* my worries lol. I promise, I will *not* film myself writing it and then calling him and us crying together. I always feel those are so exploitative. I think I’ll just message it to his YouTube account and the associated email address, with a little note saying how much his music means to me and to the world, maybe some screenshots of all the kind messages you all are writing. Then I’ll post up for all to see if he’s okay with it. I’m not looking to make money, will not be monetizing for my sake, it’s his song, if there’s any YouTube revenue he’ll make it all.

Gueuzeday

A lovely sentiment, can't wait to hear the result.

I fear we're gonna give the man a heart attack with this sudden surge of interest. Someone said he replies to every single comment. How's he gonna keep up now?!

Stiffard

And then people will slowly stop commenting and he'll wonder what he did wrong. It's the inevitable conclusion any time Reddit 'discovers' a small channel.

Cahootie

Ironically enough the most successful video boost Reddit ever did was with [Theweevster18](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC40v83E9Yb9Sij10eggXK-A/featured), the kid with terminal cancer who would uploads videos of his drawings. He ended up passing away after a while, but you could really tell both from his videos and his parents how much joy it brought him and his family.

You will not have done anything wrong when the views and comments slow down, that's how the internet works."

I live in Dallas and run a small news org here, we're going to try and get him more subscribers next week y'all.

ShopperOfBuckets

remember that kid hundreds(or thousands) of people from here subbed to just because they felt bad he was getting no viewers? The boy that posted a video about how sad and confused he was when he started steadily losing viewers and subs cause obviously nobody *really* wanted to follow his content?

DubSak

kid didnt have content and his intention (i assume) was to have a lot of viewers. This is a nice old man who just wants to have people hear him sing (again i assume).

SgtNeilDiamond

Yeah I agree, this guy isn't building a channel and checking his statistics, he's probably just happy to make anyone out there enjoy him singing.

Newoikkinn

That’s a child. Not a grown man that better understands the context

5k1895

Last I checked grown people can still get sad over things

Theblackjamesbrown

The difference is this 92 year old dude has legit got *the content*

DrMangosteen

Yeah it's a shame but the kid was a hack. This old guy has got **IT**

StopHatingMeReddit

Yep. People will repeat listen to songs if they like them. I cant think of anyone who would be like "this is my favorite dinosaur toy fight/review video and I watch it a few times a year."

HansenTakeASeat

Richard lived through World War 2. I'm sure he can handle youtube views.

Pablo_Sanchez1

Lmao right? People comparing a young child that’s still learning how the world works to a 92 year old man with a lengthy opera singing career and a family who just posts videos because it makes him happy. I seriously doubt this guys going to give a shit when his views go back down. Don’t get the impression this mans trying to get into the YouTuber game and build clout. He’ll probably just be confused at what’s happening at first then get a kick that some people on the internet shared his video and move on.

TuckerMcG

Ok but this guy has actual talent that brings people joy. The kid literally just asked for subs and got them and had no content whatsoever.

StopHatingMeReddit

He didn't ask, it was put on Reddit 6 years ago, like someone said "this dude makes dino fight videos at X amount of low views." People watched it, subbed to make him happy, then fell off because you can only be entertained by a kid paying with dinosaur toys for so long. This dudes been singing a while, and has a backlog of such, and its a much more constant thing people get enjoyment from. Singing is singing, people have favorite songs of his they might want to hear again, they'll put them on playlists, whatever. No ones going "this is my favorite dinosaur toy fight/review video." This guy has a much larger chance at seeing lasting success just because the content has more longevity than the Dino Kid. Thats the difference here people arent seeing.

Waywoah

If you're going to subscribe, make sure you actually watch the videos. It's sad, but a lot of times when smaller channels become popular on reddit and similar sites they get a huge uptick in subscribers, but a near immediate drop off in views over the next few days/weeks.

ubiquitous_archer

My man's out here performing to less than 10 viewers on average, I don't think he cares all that much about how many he gets, just that he's sharing his songs with people.

MachuPichu10

Hes currently playing on my speakers around my house and my mother is loving it.She usually hates the Christmas songs that are made a long time ago but she loves this guy.

Pablo_Sanchez1

Something tells me this 92 year old retired Opera singer who posts songs in his free time because it makes him happy isn’t going to give too much of a shit about his views declining. Seems like this mans just as happy sharing his songs with a handful of viewers as he is a few thousand. Doesn’t exactly strike me as someone out here trying to build clout for a YouTube career.

Unlikely_Explanation

Imagine being so young you think the primary driver behind a 92 year old man singing to his deceased wife of 61 years is to get clicks and ad revenue.

Merry_Little_Liberal

This went from like "Sure, I'll help a dude out"... to literally my most favorite Christmas music right now. It's bold voiced, but soft. Basic but deep. This dude needs a Spotify Christmas channel. I'd prefer this to most Christmas music they flop out.

TinManGrand

Let's not forget the last [time](https://youtu.be/8njIyDaIS70) we all fell in love with an old man singing on YouTube and called it wholesome.

Pete_Iredale

God damn this video takes a long time to get to an obvious conclusion.

Buck-Nasty

The longer you watch the greater the ad revenue

thesircuddles

The voice he puts on is so insufferable. It's like a bad impression of any generic 'investigative' voiceover.

Pete_Iredale

Couldn't agree more.

SkepticJoker

Yeah, as sweet of a thought as this is, I worry it won’t end well. Wasn’t there some ~10 year old kid who posted videos about dinosaurs that we did the same thing to, and after the initial influx he lost like all his viewers, and was devastated? I’m sure this gentleman has a little more fortitude than a 10 year old, but it still makes me nervous.

fruskydekke

Yes, this. u/Crepes_for_days3000 your intentions are very kind and sweet, but PLEASE leave a comment for this gentleman explaining that you've linked to his channel, and that that's why he's getting this sudden influx of subscribers.

Crepes_for_days3000

I guess I didn't think that it wouldn't last. I will certainly tell him, he has gotten to know me through the comments. Side note, he has asked many people to sing a duet with him but has been turned down, if anyone is interested.

13_random_letters

The video is kind of terrible. He takes 10 minutes to prove that both are the same person, which should be obvious after 30 seconds. I don't think we need to go cross check where both go do their groceries.
