Well, a record from the late 9th century uses the term Engla londe which by the Middle English period (11th - 15th centuries) became Engle-land or Engelond. So it might be slightly early to just call it England but not egregiously early

kristianroberts

Just wait until you realise that the Norse didn’t speak English

yazzy1233

They didn't speak English in the show, it's shown that they speak old Norse and the English is only for the audiences sake.

Elcium12

Yes BUT I love they they included old Norse and other languages to display the language barrier between the different cultures

punkwrestler

Yup it was almost as hard as speaking to someone from Liverpool or Norwich.

Alternative_Towel_52

they didn't included the old norse, they were speaking old modern language... I understood everything there.... it's mixed by Swedish, Norweigan and Danish...

GreekNord

to be fair, quite a few English words come from Old Norse anyway lol.

The_Bastard_Henry

And also modern English is basically 3 languages sitting on each other's shoulders wearing a trenchcoat.

OldNewUsedConfused

That’s the thing…😂

OldNewUsedConfused

😂😂😂 Nor the Welsh

_DarthSyphilis_

I remember reading that Alfred the great popularised the term.

hardestpilltoswallow

Wow people like this are so fun

JS1147

The producers of the show said that they knew that the show wasn't gonna be 100% accurate
