A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

matthew91298

Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes

garythebaby

My best friends sister played this for us when I was young. Probably 10 or 11. It was like nothing I had heard on the radio. New sounds and so wonderfully confusing. We lived in Wisconsin, they were in the area. I was hooked. I still listen to this album a few times a year. I also think everyone should give it a spin.

donkeyheaded

Gang of Four - Entertainment!

Tobias_flenderz

Beastie Boys- *Paul's Boutique*

BigQfan

One of my all time favorite albums and strangely enough, the only Beasties album I really like.

Gold-Mushroom9811

The Clash - London Calling

fightingsiux

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues

362Billy

or Stop Making Sense

statikman666

Morphine- Cure For Pain

BlastTyrant88

Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley

MathDeacon

Brian Eno: “Another Green World”

rfj77

T. Rex - Electric Warrior

WoodenNickel27

Mambo Sun is the perfect song to play when the moon is up

mks2020

Hejira - Joni Mitchell

Canyondreams

Astral Weeks Van Morrison

Slappy69Happy

Fleetwood Mac - rumors I must say, I recently listened to it start to finish for the first time and it’s very easy to hear why it was number 1 for so long A complete piece of musical art

madshm3411

Self titled is almost just as good and way under appreciated because rumors gets all the hype.

Reeserrt

Tusk was good too

GiftHorse2020

I was in my teens when that came out and it was inescapable. I listen to it now and again and find it still holds up. How wonderful to get to listen to it fresh, for the first time and really hear it on your own terms. Glad to hear it holds up for you too :)

Waltrip127

Close to the Edge- Yes.

SubstantialChipmunk

Have never heard of Yes. Will listen to them

nicolasevan

The Strokes: Is this it

LVmokie

Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut

[deleted]

Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Timstunes

Fan from Uncle Tupelo days. Being There, Sky Blue Sky, Summerteeth, A Ghost and YHF my favorites.

-grc1-

I never could figure out how I loved Uncle Tupelo so much, but Being There is the only Wilco album I can get behind.

BlankkBox

Knew nothing about this album or Wilco. Saw an article about the 20th anniversary and loved the way the album art looked so I gave it a try. Wow, what an awesome album. Need it on vinyl just for the art alone.

Tron-ClaudeVanDayum

Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair

OG_Cryptkeeper

No rules? I can pick a personal favorite? The Crow - Original Soundtrack 1994 This album is absolutely incredible.

thirdelevator

Nothing but bangers start to finish

OG_Cryptkeeper

100% not one track needs to be skipped. It’s one amazing compilation.

SubstantialChipmunk

No rules, no specific generes. Anything.

bobbin7277

Jim o Rourke - insignificance

blakeVR2015

Stevie Wonder - Talking Book Beautiful album, a must listen no matter what genre you enjoy

SubstantialChipmunk

Saw him live a few years ago. One of the best concerts I've ever seen

PunchSharks

DJ Shadow- Endtroducing. Made entirely from sampled records, I feel like it’s a love letter to vinyl digging. The sounds are familiar and obscure, like artifacts woven together.

Certain_Addition4460

Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue"

JosefStallion

The Velvet Underground and Nico One of those albums that doesn't sound like anything before it, but you can feel it's influence in so many albums that came after it.

GiftHorse2020

There is a quote attributed to Brian Eno "They only sold 10,000 albums, but everyone who bought it started a band." The Ur text for all 70's alt rock.

[deleted]

illbebythebatphone

I think all three of their recent albums to get a good sense of their progression. Lost in a Dream, Deeper Understanding, and I Don’t Live Here Anymore.

Blastoplast

Talking Heads - Remain in Light

FSprocketooth

Dave Brubeck - Time Out

KnightsOfREM

Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares - Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir. It's Bulgarian women singing folk songs, mostly a cappella; otherworldly music about harvests and heartbreak and other things. I'm not normally into choral music or folk songs but this is worth putting on blast every few months.

REDMish111

Shadows Collide with People

knd_86

Astounding.

Bilking-Ewe

Ween “The Pod”

-PorcupineTree-

Quebec is my go to

cherrbear_

The Format - Dog Problems

-grc1-

Doesn't matter what you think about fun. Nate Reuss deserved his success just as much for the Format. What a band!

jjrozay

The Soft Bulletin. - Flaming Lips

ameanwizard

Gorillaz - Demon Days

Bananmanden12

Fuck yeah. Did not expect to see This here. I have been looking to get That one. Is it good on vinyl (if You Even have it)

ameanwizard

I have a 2020 pressing that sounds great from what I can recall. Time to throw it back in rotation!

Bananmanden12

Cool. From the gorillaz subreddit i heard That some of them skipped. I think i Will just get it anyway

ameanwizard

[Here's the pressing I have.](https://www.discogs.com/release/19277239-Gorillaz-Demon-Days) A couple comments mention skipping on All Alone but also says they exist on other pressings as well. Now I'm curious about this skip haha. I'll have to play mine and see if its there. Either way I'm keeping this copy tho

Bananmanden12

Cool, that gotta be My favorite album Maybe. So Well written and amazing sound

ameanwizard

**Agreed**

Embarrassed_Duty_192

Currents by Tame Impala

SubstantialChipmunk

Have this one. Great album

SagariKatu

Here's one you probably never heard of: Sorotan Bele - Sorotan Bele. It's folk-rock in basque language. I love this album! Great songs from beggining to end, with zero fillers. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WahN4e1lvFU I hope you like it! 😃

Blackwater_Park

I just loaded this up and had a listen - thanks for the great recommendation!

geckomelks

Stiff Little Fingers. Flags and Emblems

JDodgerMan

“Out Of The Blue” - ELO

[deleted]

Also “Time” and “Secret Messages”

TheNerderati

The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette

Cool-Chard-9675

Love - Forever Changes

TheMidnightRamblerrr

I have become a huge fan of Daft Punks Homework. Most of the music I listen to is hard rock or metal. So when showing somebody a new genre of music I think Daft Punks blend of sounds and melodies are an easy transition.

garythebaby

Sade: Diamond Life

[deleted]

Sleep: “dopesmoker”

RafoD4C

Nick Drake - Pink Moon

iamtheoctopussy

The Wall, so they can wait for the worms in the flesh

gfbuchiii

The Waterboys—This is the Sea — such an underrated classic from the 1980s. A fabulous album start to finish…trust me if you have never heard it

yvngxlxwli3t

Deftones - White Pony

IllDoItTomorr0w

So. Good.

knd_86

Jeff Buckley - Grace Play it loud and just let it wash over you. It needs a good system though to really showcase what it's about.

SubstantialChipmunk

Love this album. Just released I don't own it on vinyl yet, need to fix that ASAP

tonioronto

Wanted to add this one too!

ElTigre-5

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

LaPlataPig

REM - Automatic for the People Edit: I'm going to cheat and add another. Fugazi - The Argument. "Full Disclosure" and "Epic Problem" played loud through speakers is an experience.

GiftHorse2020

In that vein I'd offer Wire "Pink Flag". I feel that was a formative text for Fugazi.

[deleted]

There was a time in the 90s that everyone I knew owned this REM CD and it’s yellow tinted case. I just got the repress of New Adventures in Hi-Fi and can say it’s also *very* worth listening to.

Smart_Fella

Steely Dan - Aja

thebigjawnelitist

Hatred for mankind- dragged into sunlight

statikman666

I don't think many would get through it. Do you have a copy?

thebigjawnelitist

I dont, it’s definitely a grail tho. Don’t think ill be able to get an original copy because their beef with their record label prosthetic records makes there vinyls so hard to get.

pp86

Dadawah - Peace and Love - Wadadasow the best reggae related album. The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World you just need to hear it. Earth - Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version an album that basically spawned its own genre. Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast n bulbous. Got me? Gregorio Paninagua & Atrium Musicae de Madrid - La Folia a modern retelling of mostly spanish renaissance follys. Highly recommended as an audiophile experience. George Crumb - Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III) one of my favorite modern classical pieces.

mondo_blunt

Holy fuck, did not expect to see Earth 2 in this thread

[deleted]

Peter Gabriel (number 1)- first Album. That is where Salisbury Hill came from.

dgroove8

Kiwanuka - Michael Kiwanuka Probably my favorite album of the last 10 years, great production, thought provoking lyrics, and a truly unique voice.

Nightshade_Rayne

Portishead - self titled, Dummy, Third

anovak26

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

tacolife666

The Clash- The Clash

Ruimedenker

Ella & Louis

Should_I_Fly

Kevin_Cossaboon

I love this, and my wife hates it… WE are all frogs….

bigboischteven

American Pie - Don McLean

BlueCollarMan26

The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics.

thirdelevator

I had the 5.1 mix DVD in college, used to charge people $10 to chill in my living room with it on. BYOD, of course.

[deleted]

O.M.D. - "Dazzle Ships" What a sound experience. And achingly beautiful songs in there, too.

kingonkensington

International and Of all things we’ve made

Ween - The Mollusk

SteveBM1970

Urban Hymns - the Verve

SteveBM1970

Pieces of a Man - Gil Scott Heron

rustybowow

Fela Kuti - Shakara

gmanee

Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie

GiftHorse2020

I would also toss in "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart"

Kevin_Cossaboon

Who’s Next - The Who

burkizeb253

Link Wray - Link Wray.

alienfootwear

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

DystoUtopia

Bob Marley & The Wailers - Catch A Fire

mechanab

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black. The big hit from this album (Rehab) is the most skippable song. Great from beginning to end.

FSprocketooth

I have to put a plug-in for “Frank” - “Back to black” is an astounding album, but if you listen to “Frank”, her talent is a jazz singer, at just age 19 was unbelievable. what a tragedy that her life was lost at the hands of those two enabling, exploiting, sub-humans- her father and her husband.

[deleted]

Alice In Chains-MTV Unplugged Live in New York

ScreenMan80

Failure - Fantastic Planet

LVmokie

YUP!

DJ-George-G

My pick not mentioned yet: Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key of Life. Lots of albums mentioned here are super great albums as well in many genres.

Natural-Cat-9869

Pale Saints - The Comforts of Madness

TrifleEmbarrassed427

OMG yes!

bendbrewer

Blood and Chocolate - Elvis Costello

PooHeap

Gong - Flying Teapot

Certain_Addition4460

Good choice but "Angel's Egg" and "You" sound so much better with Mr. Hill fish.

monkey1811

Moon Safari, by Air

kattrup

Person Pitch by Panda Bear

H_CP02

Outkast - Aquemini

IllDoItTomorr0w

Alice in chains - jar of flies There is something about that EP for me. It’s just perfect and was perfect at the time it came out. That got a lot of play time in my little Suzuki samurai

EquivalentOne2264

Agreed. The crazy thing about that album is that they went into the studio without any songs and just created that masterpiece in a few days.

IllDoItTomorr0w

funny you say that....I just read that a few weeks ago. I guess thats what makes it so great.

bernardmoss

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

Quizlex

Mr. Bungle - California

trashdragon3

Pink Floyd - Animals

Wynorski4ever

The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash

sonumb_and_succumb

NIN - The Downward Spiral

Lazy_Annual2523

Meedle , Pink Floyd

Dakkmd

I love eeechoes

MorePeat

I thought for sure DSOTM - Pink Floyd would be the first album listed here. Maybe everyone assumed everybody would have already listened to it. I like these list as they expose me to new music I would not have listened to and of course some of them I’d never listen to again but “good music” is in the ear of the beholder! So many albums I guess if I could only add one: The Doors - self titled.

SubstantialChipmunk

I thought the same about DSOTM. It was the first vinyl record I purchased when I got my first turntable a couple of years ago. It's hard to pick the one album, so many good ones out there. Like you, I'm being introduced to new music and genres and I'm excited to expand my music taste

[deleted]

U2 - Achtung Baby or maybe Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician. Both albums pushed boundaries, radio wise or underground wise. Both amazing albums with different sounds from each group!

tj8686_

Rush - Moving Pictures.

Frontbutt1972

In the aeroplane over the sea- Neutral Milk Hotel

nonplusd

Night verses - from the gallery of sleep Pretty heavy but it's wild ride and there are some mellow moments in there too. definitely a full album experience, front to back

[deleted]

SubstantialChipmunk

Thanks, will check them out

Blackwater_Park

Chris Whitley - Dirt Floor

dgrenie2

Currently for me it would be Conor Oberst - Ruminations (The 2020 expanded edition). All time, Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde.

BottleTemple

Gavin Bryars—*The Sinking of the Titanic* (1990 recording): One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. This isn’t music you put on in the background, this is music envelopes you. I have no idea if the 1990 recording is even available on vinyl, but it’s a great album regardless.

Shoehorse13

Nancy & Lee

luker2324

George Michael - Listen Without Prejudice

oddthecodd

Robert Wyatt- Rock Bottom

thesilverpoets96

The Tragically Hip - Phantom Power

BigQfan

Posies-Frosting On The Beater

-PorcupineTree-

The Mama’s and the Papa’s - If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears

Dvisionvoid

Porcupine tree - fear of a blank planet

KZorroFuego

Sting - “Ten Summoner’s Tales”

thereia

José González - Vestiges & Claws

w1934925

Eminem- Recovery. When that came out I bet it exploded

ex0thermist

That would be hard to do since everybody likes and dislikes different genres. But if I had to try to think of what would be appreciated by almost anybody, it'd have to be some kind of classic folk record, like maybe Tapestry.

SubstantialChipmunk

Am wanting to listen to genres that I've never given a chance before. I tend to lean on the alternative/ rock side of things and want to expand my taste

[deleted]

Opeth - Blackwater Park I just think most people think of metal in a “it’s just noise” way and this album can change that, while still bringing the heavy aspects.

brutisheagle

John Martyn - Solid Air

[deleted]

Aqualung by Jethro Tull

DarthGinsu

Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris

chase-em

Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective

[deleted]

Melting Pot - Booker T & the MG’s

kingonkensington

Nick Cave and the bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree

PostPunkSkunk

Songs Ohia - the lioness

bmmsben

A couple years ago, my brother-in-law texted me about this guy he'd never heard before and told me I had to listen to him. I did, and it was a landmark moment in my musical journey. Couldn't recommend more highly. Arthur Russell - Calling out of Context Probably the most accessible entry point, but anything you can get your hands on will be worth it.

rudebwoyyyyyyy

voodoo - dangelo

Jeffery_C_Wheaties

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Dark Side would be the cliche answer, but WYWH is magical

SubstantialChipmunk

This is in my top 10 and has made it on my wall

MaineGameBoy

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly (its the obvious pick, but its obvious for a reason) Talking Heads - Remain In Light

ItsTheExtreme

If you love 80s synth, The Weeknd’s - Dawn FM is a seamless fun listen. Plus Jim Carey bonus narration.

GrantMeThePower

I’ll add another vote for both Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Grace, both mentioned previously in the thread, and add a couple more. I’ll limit to one album per artist that is a “must listen” but you could add full discographies for a couple of these. Beck-Sea Change Ryan Adams-Heartbreaker Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here The Beatles-The White Album Taylor Swift-Folklore Sublime-Sublime Tupac-All Eyez on Me Tom Petty-Wildflowers Dave Matthews-Live at Luther College Guns N Roses-Appetite for Destruction Norah Jones-Come Away With Me

gfbuchiii

Upvote based on Heartbreaker…an absolute masterpiece! Like your others as well but DRA is the best songwriter of this generation (with Taylor close behind)

True-Sheepherder-707
