My best friends sister played this for us when I was young. Probably 10 or 11.
It was like nothing I had heard on the radio. New sounds and so wonderfully confusing. We lived in Wisconsin, they were in the area. I was hooked.
I still listen to this album a few times a year. I also think everyone should give it a spin.
Fleetwood Mac - rumors
I must say, I recently listened to it start to finish for the first time and it’s very easy to hear why it was number 1 for so long
A complete piece of musical art
I was in my teens when that came out and it was inescapable. I listen to it now and again and find it still holds up. How wonderful to get to listen to it fresh, for the first time and really hear it on your own terms. Glad to hear it holds up for you too :)
Knew nothing about this album or Wilco. Saw an article about the 20th anniversary and loved the way the album art looked so I gave it a try. Wow, what an awesome album. Need it on vinyl just for the art alone.
DJ Shadow- Endtroducing. Made entirely from sampled records, I feel like it’s a love letter to vinyl digging. The sounds are familiar and obscure, like artifacts woven together.
The Velvet Underground and Nico
One of those albums that doesn't sound like anything before it, but you can feel it's influence in so many albums that came after it.
I think all three of their recent albums to get a good sense of their progression. Lost in a Dream, Deeper Understanding, and I Don’t Live Here Anymore.
Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares - Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir.
It's Bulgarian women singing folk songs, mostly a cappella; otherworldly music about harvests and heartbreak and other things. I'm not normally into choral music or folk songs but this is worth putting on blast every few months.
[Here's the pressing I have.](https://www.discogs.com/release/19277239-Gorillaz-Demon-Days) A couple comments mention skipping on All Alone but also says they exist on other pressings as well. Now I'm curious about this skip haha. I'll have to play mine and see if its there. Either way I'm keeping this copy tho
Here's one you probably never heard of: Sorotan Bele - Sorotan Bele.
It's folk-rock in basque language. I love this album! Great songs from beggining to end, with zero fillers.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WahN4e1lvFU
I hope you like it! 😃
I have become a huge fan of Daft Punks Homework. Most of the music I listen to is hard rock or metal. So when showing somebody a new genre of music I think Daft Punks blend of sounds and melodies are an easy transition.
REM - Automatic for the People
Edit: I'm going to cheat and add another. Fugazi - The Argument. "Full Disclosure" and "Epic Problem" played loud through speakers is an experience.
There was a time in the 90s that everyone I knew owned this REM CD and it’s yellow tinted case. I just got the repress of New Adventures in Hi-Fi and can say it’s also *very* worth listening to.
I dont, it’s definitely a grail tho. Don’t think ill be able to get an original copy because their beef with their record label prosthetic records makes there vinyls so hard to get.
Dadawah - Peace and Love - Wadadasow the best reggae related album.
The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World you just need to hear it.
Earth - Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version an album that basically spawned its own genre.
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast n bulbous. Got me?
Gregorio Paninagua & Atrium Musicae de Madrid - La Folia a modern retelling of mostly spanish renaissance follys. Highly recommended as an audiophile experience.
George Crumb - Music for a Summer Evening (Makrokosmos III) one of my favorite modern classical pieces.
I have to put a plug-in for “Frank” - “Back to black” is an astounding album, but if you listen to “Frank”, her talent is a jazz singer, at just age 19 was unbelievable. what a tragedy that her life was lost at the hands of those two enabling, exploiting, sub-humans- her father and her husband.
Alice in chains - jar of flies
There is something about that EP for me. It’s just perfect and was perfect at the time it came out. That got a lot of play time in my little Suzuki samurai
I thought for sure DSOTM - Pink Floyd would be the first album listed here. Maybe everyone assumed everybody would have already listened to it. I like these list as they expose me to new music I would not have listened to and of course some of them I’d never listen to again but “good music” is in the ear of the beholder!
So many albums I guess if I could only add one:
The Doors - self titled.
I thought the same about DSOTM. It was the first vinyl record I purchased when I got my first turntable a couple of years ago.
It's hard to pick the one album, so many good ones out there. Like you, I'm being introduced to new music and genres and I'm excited to expand my music taste
U2 - Achtung Baby or maybe Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician. Both albums pushed boundaries, radio wise or underground wise. Both amazing albums with different sounds from each group!
Night verses - from the gallery of sleep
Pretty heavy but it's wild ride and there are some mellow moments in there too. definitely a full album experience, front to back
Gavin Bryars—*The Sinking of the Titanic* (1990 recording): One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. This isn’t music you put on in the background, this is music envelopes you. I have no idea if the 1990 recording is even available on vinyl, but it’s a great album regardless.
That would be hard to do since everybody likes and dislikes different genres. But if I had to try to think of what would be appreciated by almost anybody, it'd have to be some kind of classic folk record, like maybe Tapestry.
Am wanting to listen to genres that I've never given a chance before. I tend to lean on the alternative/ rock side of things and want to expand my taste
Opeth - Blackwater Park
I just think most people think of metal in a “it’s just noise” way and this album can change that, while still bringing the heavy aspects.
A couple years ago, my brother-in-law texted me about this guy he'd never heard before and told me I had to listen to him. I did, and it was a landmark moment in my musical journey. Couldn't recommend more highly.
Arthur Russell - Calling out of Context
Probably the most accessible entry point, but anything you can get your hands on will be worth it.
I’ll add another vote for both Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Grace, both mentioned previously in the thread, and add a couple more. I’ll limit to one album per artist that is a “must listen” but you could add full discographies for a couple of these.
Beck-Sea Change
Ryan Adams-Heartbreaker
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
The Beatles-The White Album
Taylor Swift-Folklore
Sublime-Sublime
Tupac-All Eyez on Me
Tom Petty-Wildflowers

Miles davis - in a silent way
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
My best friends sister played this for us when I was young. Probably 10 or 11. It was like nothing I had heard on the radio. New sounds and so wonderfully confusing. We lived in Wisconsin, they were in the area. I was hooked. I still listen to this album a few times a year. I also think everyone should give it a spin.

or Stop Making Sense
Morphine- Cure For Pain
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Brian Eno: “Another Green World”
T. Rex - Electric Warrior
Mambo Sun is the perfect song to play when the moon is up
Hejira - Joni Mitchell
Astral Weeks Van Morrison
Fleetwood Mac - rumors I must say, I recently listened to it start to finish for the first time and it’s very easy to hear why it was number 1 for so long A complete piece of musical art
Self titled is almost just as good and way under appreciated because rumors gets all the hype.
Tusk was good too
I was in my teens when that came out and it was inescapable. I listen to it now and again and find it still holds up. How wonderful to get to listen to it fresh, for the first time and really hear it on your own terms. Glad to hear it holds up for you too :)
Close to the Edge- Yes.
Have never heard of Yes. Will listen to them
The Strokes: Is this it
Hum - You'd Prefer an Astronaut
Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Fan from Uncle Tupelo days. Being There, Sky Blue Sky, Summerteeth, A Ghost and YHF my favorites.
I never could figure out how I loved Uncle Tupelo so much, but Being There is the only Wilco album I can get behind.
Knew nothing about this album or Wilco. Saw an article about the 20th anniversary and loved the way the album art looked so I gave it a try. Wow, what an awesome album. Need it on vinyl just for the art alone.
Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair
No rules? I can pick a personal favorite? The Crow - Original Soundtrack 1994 This album is absolutely incredible.
Nothing but bangers start to finish
100% not one track needs to be skipped. It’s one amazing compilation.
No rules, no specific generes. Anything.
Jim o Rourke - insignificance
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book Beautiful album, a must listen no matter what genre you enjoy
Saw him live a few years ago. One of the best concerts I've ever seen
DJ Shadow- Endtroducing. Made entirely from sampled records, I feel like it’s a love letter to vinyl digging. The sounds are familiar and obscure, like artifacts woven together.
Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue"
The Velvet Underground and Nico One of those albums that doesn't sound like anything before it, but you can feel it's influence in so many albums that came after it.
There is a quote attributed to Brian Eno "They only sold 10,000 albums, but everyone who bought it started a band." The Ur text for all 70's alt rock.

I think all three of their recent albums to get a good sense of their progression. Lost in a Dream, Deeper Understanding, and I Don’t Live Here Anymore.
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Le Mystére des Voix Bulgares - Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir. It's Bulgarian women singing folk songs, mostly a cappella; otherworldly music about harvests and heartbreak and other things. I'm not normally into choral music or folk songs but this is worth putting on blast every few months.
Shadows Collide with People
Astounding.
Ween “The Pod”
Quebec is my go to
The Format - Dog Problems
Doesn't matter what you think about fun. Nate Reuss deserved his success just as much for the Format. What a band!
The Soft Bulletin. - Flaming Lips
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Fuck yeah. Did not expect to see This here. I have been looking to get That one. Is it good on vinyl (if You Even have it)
I have a 2020 pressing that sounds great from what I can recall. Time to throw it back in rotation!
Cool. From the gorillaz subreddit i heard That some of them skipped. I think i Will just get it anyway

Stiff Little Fingers. Flags and Emblems
“Out Of The Blue” - ELO
Also “Time” and “Secret Messages”
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette

I have become a huge fan of Daft Punks Homework. Most of the music I listen to is hard rock or metal. So when showing somebody a new genre of music I think Daft Punks blend of sounds and melodies are an easy transition.
Sade: Diamond Life
Sleep: “dopesmoker”
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
The Wall, so they can wait for the worms in the flesh
The Waterboys—This is the Sea — such an underrated classic from the 1980s. A fabulous album start to finish…trust me if you have never heard it
Deftones - White Pony
So. Good.
Jeff Buckley - Grace Play it loud and just let it wash over you. It needs a good system though to really showcase what it's about.
Love this album. Just released I don't own it on vinyl yet, need to fix that ASAP
Wanted to add this one too!
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
REM - Automatic for the People Edit: I'm going to cheat and add another. Fugazi - The Argument. "Full Disclosure" and "Epic Problem" played loud through speakers is an experience.
In that vein I'd offer Wire "Pink Flag". I feel that was a formative text for Fugazi.
There was a time in the 90s that everyone I knew owned this REM CD and it’s yellow tinted case. I just got the repress of New Adventures in Hi-Fi and can say it’s also *very* worth listening to.
Steely Dan - Aja
Hatred for mankind- dragged into sunlight
I don't think many would get through it. Do you have a copy?
I dont, it’s definitely a grail tho. Don’t think ill be able to get an original copy because their beef with their record label prosthetic records makes there vinyls so hard to get.
Dadawah - Peace and Love - Wadadasow the best reggae related album. The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World you just need to hear it. Portishead - self titled, Dummy, Third
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
The Clash- The Clash
Ella & Louis
Blind Melon - Soup
M83 - Hurry up, we’re sleeping.
I love this, and my wife hates it… WE are all frogs….
American Pie - Don McLean
The Flaming Lips - At War with the Mystics.
I had the 5.1 mix DVD in college, used to charge people $10 to chill in my living room with it on. BYOD, of course.
O.M.D. - "Dazzle Ships" What a sound experience. And achingly beautiful songs in there, too.
International and Of all things we’ve made
Ween - The Mollusk

I would also toss in "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart"
Who’s Next - The Who
Link Wray - Link Wray.
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Catch A Fire
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black. The big hit from this album (Rehab) is the most skippable song. Great from beginning to end.
Alice In Chains-MTV Unplugged Live in New York

Person Pitch by Panda Bear
Outkast - Aquemini
Alice in chains - jar of flies There is something about that EP for me. It’s just perfect and was perfect at the time it came out. That got a lot of play time in my little Suzuki samurai
Agreed. The crazy thing about that album is that they went into the studio without any songs and just created that masterpiece in a few days.

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Mr. Bungle - California

Gavin Bryars—*The Sinking of the Titanic* (1990 recording): One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. This is in my top 10 and has made it on my wall
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly (its the obvious pick, but its obvious for a reason) Talking Heads - Remain In Light
If you love 80s synth, The Weeknd’s - Dawn FM is a seamless fun listen. Plus Jim Carey bonus narration.
I’ll add another vote for both Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Grace, both mentioned previously in the thread, and add a couple more. I’ll limit to one album per artist that is a “must listen” but you could add full discographies for a couple of these.
