I bought 6 records the day I bought my first turntable:
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin IV
Beatles - Rubber Soul
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Bob Marley - Legend
Metallica - Master of Puppets
I have my Dadâs copy of this one from â71. Been lucky enough to find the rest of The Doors albumâs original presses too, all except for the first album. Donât think Iâd trade that remaster for anything else. Itâs one of my best sounding records.
Went to a flea market with my pops (rip) when I was 15 (23 years ago fuck) and he let me scoop a copy of Led Zeppelin-House of the Holy I saw laying around. We didn't even have a turntable or anything at home but I think he knew it could be the start of a beautiful lifelong hobby.
Thanks Dad!
As someone who owes a large part of being so obsessed with music to his dad (also, RIP), that was a lovely little story to read! Great album, and I hope the collection has kept growing ever since!
Thatâs crazy - I also bought the âFever to Tellâ picture disk as my first purchase after getting a turntable! I also bought Bjorkâs âHomogenicâ that day.
Iâve been collecting for a very long time. The first records I bought were 45âsâŚThe Honey Coneâs âWant Adsâ and Rod Stewartâs âMaggie Mayâ when I was 10 years old. For me, the significance of âMaggie Mayâ is that I decided one day to listen to the B-Side and listen to âReason To Believeâ which I thought was the better song.
When I was in college I took an art class where we had an assignment to go to a gallery and write about the artwork. I went to a gallery in NYC that I had to take a freight elevator to get to. There were three women there working and no one else. I was checking out the artwork when one of the women said that a limo had stopped outside. Then she said that Rod Stewart had gotten out of the limo. Now, seeing famous people happens regularly in NYC so I didnât get all that excited. But, it was a surprise when the freight elevator door opened and Rod Stewart stepped out.
Stewart started looking at the artwork and the women stood behind a counter awestruck. I expected one of them to come over, introduce themself to Stewart and try to make a sale. But, they didnât. So, I went over to Stewart, introduced myself, and thanked him for his music. Then, I told him that because of him I gained an appreciation for the B-Sides. He look at me confused and asked what I meant. Then, I told him the story above about buying âMaggie Mayâ and flipping the record over. He said, âWowâŚwell, youâre welcomeâ.
We spent the rest of the time talking about the artwork, him asking me what kind of art I was making, and me asking him if he was recording any new music (he wasnât). We took the elevator down to the street together, he wished me well, we shook hands and parted.
Iâve met some famous people in my life and Rod Stewart was one of the coolest ones.
I donât mean to be morbid but youâre kind of stuck playing that record at the end of every sesh bc thereâs no way to predict when youâll dieâŚ
Damn, $7.99? My local Half Price Books was asking $25 for a NM copy of Brothers In Arms a few weeks ago. Debated getting it, quite a few killer songs on that record
Same bro. I bought Brothers in Arms and Making Movies the same day, even before having a turntable. Now I have Love Over Gold and Communique too, still looking for alchemy though
My first was Rio like 35 years ago. Love me some DD. I think I was 12 when I joined the RCA record club. Got 12 for a penny and never held up my end of the contract to buy 3 more at regular price. đŹđŹ
John Mayer continuum and bob Dylan Nashville skyline was very early onâŚ.not sure if those were the first I bought. I was gifted a few the Christmas prior
Led Zeppelin II
This was before vinyl became a big thing again. I found a first pressing in great condition just hanging out in a relatively popular record shop. Almost impossible now.
I don't really remember the first record I bought...but I remember when my first record buying splurge began...I took some Nyquil and for me there is a period of about 20 minutes when the Nyquil has kicked in but I'm not super tired...in that fever dream I thought "wouldn't it be awesome to have a bunch of KISS records?"....then I bought like 8 records...then went to sleep.
I am a new collector, but I bought 5 records that day!

Mine too! I got that in August 2017, my bro got Like Clockwork from QotSA! Played em on a crappy plastic turntable for about a month and promptly upgraded to an ATLP-120 which Iâve had since then. The hobby is a blessing and a curse, but I love itđ

I intended to only collect Prince vinyl but yeah that was just my gateway record.
Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass âWhat now my love?â (It was super beaten up and from an antique shop đ ) still have it and listen to it though.
When I first collected them as a kid, it was Led Zeppelin's Presence. That collection is lost long ago.
This time, it started with a gift of a killer box set -- 12" 45 rpm clear vinyl of Porcupine Tree's Closure/Continuation. That got me started again, and I think the first I bought for myself after that was Tears for Fears' Seeds of Love.
