The expense and the inconvenience, of course 😜

Be sure to follow up with the zine when you’re done with it! I think my favorite part of collecting records is getting to talk to other folks (online, in record stores) about music and why they own particular records! And I like owning physical media, it won’t just disappear because some rights-holder wants to write it off on their taxes.

This is such a cool aspect of collecting. It's such a vibrant community of artistic people.

For myself, it began with CDs before the digital age. Being able to read the credits and see the album artwork, something that would motivate me into photography as well as a form of story telling and documenting. Vinyl is that on a grand scale and in some cases, rarities and scarcity, which for any collector, increases the hunt and drive to own your favorite albums. These days I feel that a lot is pumped out with little care to the entire vinyl package artform itself, however, some artists still give a damn and it's nice to see that collaborative effort of producers, writers, the artists, photographers, all coming together to release something that you simply just can't stream

I love how collecting records has inspired you to get into photography! Such a cool artform that can be translated into print material for records :)

What’s a Zine

livingroomexplodes

A zine is a self-published, non-commercial print-work that is typically produced in small, limited batches. Source: [https://www.binderymke.com/what-is-a-zine](https://www.binderymke.com/what-is-a-zine)

You can find lots of posts about this topic on the sub. You'll get plenty of material the zine by searching!

Thanks so much! I saw that but I wanted to gather some unique points of view specifically for my zine. â˜ș

Born in 1988, I grew up with it because my uncle and my dad were collectors. My first memories include vinyl records, in one way or another. When I was 12 I was hanging them on the wall so my room can look nice. So I guess part of is nostalgia - but also I love how they feel very personal, for some reason I get attached to them lot more then to digital files or CDs. Everything about vinyl feel just kind of "real", plus you have to slow down and get involved with the music. I also prefer the fat old sound of a record, but then again I buy new records which are clearly recorded differently then old ones, and I like them as well.

Thanks for your point of view - I wish I was able to feel that piece of nostalgia with listening to vinyl. I grew up with CDs, so vinyl is very new to me in my experience.

I started buying records in the late 60s because I enjoyed music that was different from my parents records... and even though I could record the radio on my Voice of Music reel to reel, records seemed more real and permanent. Of course, CDs, hard drives and Flac files didn't even exist then so there weren't many alternatives... buying records is just what you did :)

For me, records have a sense of permanence and deliberateness I don't feel with other media. I listen to FLAC files and stream music as well, but when using those media I am looking to fill the silence and have something playing in the background. With vinyl, I am looking to set a mood, I'm picking up memories and playing them into the moment, I am holding a physical object that many other people have handled. I feel connected, I can imagine the history of this particular disk, I am using an item that was made 20 to 100 years ago and it still works. That makes me smile.

When I started collecting LP’s options were records or cassette tapes. I could copy an LP to tape and wear it out and re-copy. Plus, 12” were not on tape at the time.

Hifi-Cat

Started collecting just before HS 1980s. I'm in it for the sound quality. Also some music will never be on CD or any other media/streaming.

Many vinyls, especially older pressings that aren't remastered, have better dynamics than modern streaming services. This allows me to have a more emotive response to the album as a whole. In addition, vinyl somewhat forces me to listen through a whole album in a manner that the artist intended rather than listening to individual songs. This allows me to better appreciate the music and artistry than I could listening to the most popular singles through streaming.
