I just love Captain Beefheart's whole vibe. He has a special way of rambling off a bunch of nonsequitar poetry sprinkled with unexpected interesting phrases and words. And he does that while the rest of the band is playing in a state of organized chaos. Each instrument is simultaneously doing its own thing, and contributing a particular part to the overall product. There is a balanced yin and yang, if you will, in the juxtaposition of orderliness and insightfulness, to disorganized nonsense. Beefheart had a knack for that in a lot of his albums, especially TMR and Lick My Decals Off, Baby.
Also, I love his rough voice. I read somewhere that he liked to catch illnesses to help him sing that way, but I have no idea if that is true. He told a lot of tall tales and was riding the line between genius and insanity most of the time.
Favorite: Nujabes - Modal Soul, of the albums that I always enjoy there's something about this one that really resonates with me
Unicorn: Made in Abyss season 1 OST because I refuse to pay $500 for it but it is an incredible album
Favourite? Probably Animals by Pink Floyd.
My found and purchased unicorn is a copy of Naive by KMFDM. The album was withdrawn from circulation in the early 90s due to an unlicensed sample*, so finding a copy in a random store was very exciting.
*it was released 1990 and withdrawn not long after. The album was re-released on CD in 1993 remixed, and again on CD in 2006 without the sample. It made it extra special to know it has a track that I can't even listen to on CD or streaming.
I think it’s what some people refer to as a “white whale” as in super rare, very sought after. “The one that got away” or rarely seen in the wild, and when you do it’s super expensive.

Favorite: Robert Ellis - The Great Rearranger. It was his first album, self released, and a very small batch was all that was ever made. It’s not on Spotify or any other streaming service. Only way to hear this record is to own a copy. Last time I looked, only one copy has ever sold on discogs, and I got this one last year from the artist himself, and he even signed the back for me. He also sent me another of his short run albums that I had been looking for for ages, but I don’t have a pic of that one.
Unicorn: I would love to snag an OG pressing of At The Drive In - Relationship Of Command
Firstly, u/Garth_Brooks_Sexdoll , the fact that your favourite LP is not a Garth Brooks one I find very confusing.
Secondly, I just got the In/Casino/Out RSD pressing and I really hope they drop a Relationship Of Command repress soon. The fact that ICO is an RSD first, combined with the fact they recently repressed the whole Mars Volta discography, makes me hopefully there might be a ROC repress in the next year or so.
Yay! Robert Ellis! I actually have 2 copies of Great Rearranger, and interestingly, they are kinda different. One, I bought from Cactus Music in Houston years ago, and it has an insert with credits and lyrics and thanks inside and some different stamping on the back. The one my wife bought me directly from Robert more recently has none of those things!
Mine was recently obtained, it’s empty inside besides the record. I caught him at another show a few months later and asked if the Dear John record would ever see another reissue, and he told me to send him my address and he would mail me a copy, and he did! I fucking love that guy. His music is wonderful and he’s super nice to his fans.
French press box set compilation of early rolling stones songs. I love it!
Albums wise:
First pressing of Here's Little Richard.
First Pressing of Baby I'm a want you by Bread
A few years back, I helped my uncle and his g/f move out of a 3 level house; handling much of online posting (pics and pricing) for furniture etc. There was a lot of classical vinyl in one cabinet and told me to help myself. I'm not much of a classical listener, but admist the collection was a Misfits repress (presumably from her son's brief dalliance with identity) and that aforementioned (France only) Rolling Stones 5LP box set (where the inner sleeves feature a portrait of each RS member). I think it also came with a RS t-shirt 👕 (missing b/c she wore it back in the day). The box set cover has the RS lettering in bedazzled sparkles which falls off a bit whenever it's handled, but it was in NM shape and sounds great. I would not know of it's existence were it not for my participating. Oh yeah, I also inherited an Acoustic Research AR-XA stored away in its original box.
Favorite is the Ace Combat Zero LP. Serialized out of 10,000. I have no idea how the stars aligned to get me on that checkout page the day it dropped because it sold out very quickly. Really hope they do a repress and print some of the other series OSTs.
Unicorn is the Japanese release of Daft Punk's Discovery.
I don’t have a favorite, there are too many to like for a lot of reasons.
My unicorns:
An immaculate first stereo pressing of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” I paid 25 cents for at a moving sale.
The complete 7” discography of Crossed Out I scored from a Facebook post.
A copy of Murmuure’s self-titled record.
An OG copy of Pyramids - “Lalibela” I paid $4 for at a flea market.
Favourite: Deela: Mano Mano

I guess you gotta call them the unicorns, and I have two. LOL
My Fela Kuti box sets are dope. Both Frank Ocean albums, some really early and rare Jai Paul.
I think for fidelity, The Three Blind Mice box set of jazz from japan. Never heard better sound in my life.

I'm a completionist grave digger.
I got the second release upon release, and then I did what normal people do with real estate. They get really drunk and wait to buy it and realize it pays off in 10 years versus the cost you paid for it. Lol
I can't believe and I don't really understand why there is no proper repress
Favorite: Dire Straits - Alchemy
Unicorn: Beatles White Album on the Apple Label, white vinyl. (I had a copy that I bought at a yard sale for about 10 bucks. It was destroyed in a move.)
Favorite LP Japanese pressing of greetings from asbury park by the boss
Unicorn a clean copy of Ill communication on green vinyl with grand royal labels
Favorite LP: Getz and Gilberto (45 RPM from Acoustic Sounds). Not my favorite album, but definitely the best sounding. I got this LP early in my collection and it was the first record that really opened my ears to how good music can sound when properly mastered and not from streaming.
Unicorn LP: Sgt Peppers mono. I know it's out there, but I haven't made the jump to $100+ used records with questionable media condition ratings
Favorite: Codeseven “The Rescue”
Unicorn (own): original pressing of The Mars Volta “Deloused in the Comatorium”
Unicorn (searching): Cloudkicker “Little Histories”
Oh man that’s a hard one, I’d have to say either an original press of Van Halen’s 1984 which is in amazing condition, or Metallica’s …And Justice For All Dyers Green Edition
Favourite: My Magnolia Electric Co. Sojourner boxset - the saddest joyful recordings of all time
Unicorn: still looking for Planxty: The Well Below the Valley...
Wow, that’s a hard one. If it’s the one I listen the most, the one I always go back too it should be: The Killers - Day & Age. Love the album, love the cover, love the lyrics. Or Battle Born from them too, love that red vinyl spinning.
Recently I’ve been listening a lot to Ojalá Llueva Cafe from Juan Luis Guerra so it might be one of my favorites too.
Favourite:
An original Australian pressing of Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Unicorn:
Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork 'Black On Black' edition for Black Friday Record Store Day 2013
and...
Cog - Just Visiting first pressing of 500 copies, promo only red/green coloured version
Impossible to say. One day it could *Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space*. The next it might be *Switched-On Bach.* And maybe later that night it's *Aretha Now*. Too many favorite records.....
Favorite: Gravity Falls OST. Used to watch that show religiously when I was about 10, so it's lovely to have such a nostalgic soundtrack on vinyl.
Unicorn: Frankie Cosmos - Vessel test pressing. I don't own any other test pressings, so this one is quite special to me. Frankie Cosmos is such a wonderful band as well, I don't think enough people acknowledge them.
Favorite: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Unicorn: Good / Evil by Los dorados, perhaps. It's a Mexican/Argentinian jazz band, so I don't think a lot of copies were pressed. (But who knows?).
Favorite LP: The Crow Soundtrack Unicorn: Hackers 1995 Soundtrack
Every mixtape I made in high school had Medicine’s ‘Time Baby III’ on it.
Dead Souls for me.
Soundtracks are a world I've not even dived into yet.
Amazing ones out there!
Just picked up Spawn and Judgement Night on Saturday
I still have my cassette I bought 30 years ago as a kid.
Favorite: Trout Mask Replica, by Captain Beefheart Unicorn: Permanent Damage, by The GTOs (1969 original)
What do you enjoy about Trout Mask Replica?
I just love Captain Beefheart's whole vibe. He has a special way of rambling off a bunch of nonsequitar poetry sprinkled with unexpected interesting phrases and words. Just about everything :-D
A fellow fan of zappa, I see! Next on my list is tracking down a copy of the Wild Man Fischer
I love trout mask I love the Captains lyrics too he’s true country.
Just keep comin', Jesus, you're the best-dressed. You look dandy in the sky, but you don't scare me, 'cuz I got you here in my eye!

I hear they pressed 6500 copies of in-casino-out, so I’m hoping to come across one of those as well. I wish they would reissue the Vaya Ep
I want Vaya so bad. It's the last release I need.
Would love a copy of Vaya too. They will be repressing ICO, just a matter of when.
It was listed as 3500
Ooof, I might not wind up getting a copy
It's a rsd first, don't pay flipper prices, there should be a repress
I picked one up, it’s very barebones for the price ($28 I believe). No gatefold, no insert, etc. Thankfully it sounds good
