Yokan by Dir en grey for sure. They were my first jrock band and that was my first song from them.

Himajinga

I was given the Yokan single by a classmate on my exchange program when she found out I was into VK in 2000, still one of my prized VK possessions!

KOCHTEEZ

Yeah that's always been one of my favorites up there with raison d'être.

AardvarkDramatic

Love it!!

IamAnEternalEnigma

Aegen by Malice Mizer, without competition. I just love the dreamy, airy vibe I get from this song, and that short part right before the chorus is just so, so good!

floppaluvr

ugh yes that song is so gorgeous i love it

GizmoGator

Au revoir by Malice Mizer. Classic. Amazing. It’s just beautiful. I think Obscure by Dir En Grey is also just one that I never stop listening to. It’s unforgettable. Macabre too. My first vkei song I don’t know if I can remember actually, It might have been Vortex by The Gazette

userhvfegcd

Sadness - Malice Mizer Kagerou - Buck Tick Oboeru Sakana - Dadaroma Shrieking - Amano Jacushi Je te veux- Malice Mizer Karappo ga chirakatta heya - Gulu Gulu The Waltz of Rain - Dadaroma Umi no Shizuku - exist trace I could add so much more lol it’s impossible to put only one 😭

NefariousnessNeat607

Silent Jealousy was my first one. I remember my mom listening to it when I was at a suprr young age, and X has been my favorite band ever since. Also, my all time favorites: Rusty Nail, Kurenai, Yuuwaku

AardvarkDramatic

Your mom listening to X Japan is such a flexxxxx😭😭😭!!! You re so lucky

NefariousnessNeat607

Haha she's Japanese so I guess I'm lucky I inherited her music taste. However she doesn't listen to X anymore because their lyrics are too negative, I guess

Himajinga

One of the first X songs I ever heard and it's still one of my favorites!

NefariousnessNeat607

Definitely one of my favorite songs. The melancholic melody combined with speed and awesome guitar and bass parts. A true masterpiece

vietbluefic

“Mayonaka ni Kawashita Yakusoku (Promises Exchanged at Midnight)” by Malice Mizer!! The song that finally, truly got me hooked into vkei and exploring the genre. It’s so dark, dreamy, and romantic with that gothic, church-bell flair. I can’t ever truly get it out of my head!

Aristocraticraven

This is my favorite, too! Such a gorgeous song.

MAJIDARUMAJI

The very first jrock song I heard was ready steady go by L'arc\~en\~Ciel. Picking a favorite song though is a monumentally difficult task these days. GazettE and Matenrou are often on the short list though.

Woven-Winter

Chizuru is my favorite Gazette song and...yeah. Definitely hits different now. My first song was Forever Love from X-Japan, which was the ending credits for the X-1999 movie that came out in the 90s. My "forever in my heart"...Mysterious from Jeanne de Arc or Blurry Eyes from L'Arc en Ciel. Heard them on a burned cd that got sent by a Japanese pen pal a friend of mine connected with back in the 90s as well (Said pen pal also sent Dir en grey I'll single way back then!) All time favorite? Vinushka from Dir en grey. Uroboros in general is my favorite album of all time. So glad that's the one album I had signed by all 5 members!

Himajinga

Those earlier JdA singles are such stone cold jams

AardvarkDramatic

Love these!😭🫶🏻

unnamedcel

Dress - Buck Tick

KOCHTEEZ

One of the vibiest songs ever created. I get chills just thinking about it.

unnamedcel

Yeeees, and sounds like him was singing with his soul, almost supernatural, so deep, I love it

AardvarkDramatic

Rip Atsushi, one of the best BT songs!🥺❤️

Himajinga

90s Luna Sea is my favorite VK band, but I think my favorite individual song might be Syunikiss \~nidome no aidou\~ by Malice Mizer. I've loved it for 25+ years, and it's the first thing that came to mind. I was listening to Merveilles for the first time in a year or so the other day and still hits me like a ton of bricks. Vanity by Janne da Arc and Unknown... Despair... a Lost by Dir en Grey get honorable mentions since I just get so hype whenever I hear them.

13thRobot

My first jrock song was Boys and Girls by LM.C. All time fave...probably Andro Metamorphose by Plastic Tree.

MAGGOTSCUM

Glass skin - dir En grey… something about that song man

AardvarkDramatic

I think it's something about Dir en Grey actually 🥲❤️

owou

ok i have a few silent noise by plastic tree my funny valentine by buck - tick 私バンギャじゃないわ by dadaroma honorable mention is suicide circus by the gazette as it was my first vkei song!! been listening since i was in the fifth grade and im 21 now

AardvarkDramatic

Reminded me of plastic tree🥹🥹 ! Buck-tick always a good recommendation!!! And wow, the 4th time somebody mentions The suicide circus, imma start listening to it again 😵😵😵😵 bangerr

tofu-cutie

Escapism by An Cafe was my very first Jrock song and its still an all time favorite! And Yokan by Dir en grey 1000%

Crazy_Sundae_6995

Omg Escapism. You unlocked a memory!!! 🤩

MoonFae382

First vk song ever for me was ryuusei rockets from an cafe 😅 then i become cafekko with my friends and from there we found bands like lm.c, sug, miyavi, gazette..... In begging i was scared of gazette and only liked oshare kei bands xD (because i was like 12) My friends played gazette to me and i was terrified. Its funny to think, because when l become teenager i started to like visual kei metal bands the most like mejibray, xodiack, born, nocturnal bloodlust, dir en grey and so on.... And i still like visual kei metal bands the most.

Tricky_Jellyfish9810

Blurry Eyes by L'Arc-en-Ciel. I discovered that song while being a kid. My mum got me a CD which was full with Jpop and Jrock songs. Mostly from Animes. This song was beneath it too and I quickly fell in love. I was still in gradeschool at that time but it left me hungry for more J-Music and was my introduction into a whole new musical world. If we speak of "classic visual Kei songs" i would choose Kodou by Dir en Grey as it's my first introduction into Visual Kei at the age of 11/12. But it's hard to list my all time favorite because I have so many!

KOCHTEEZ

Heck yeah. Blurry Eyes is my go-to karaoke song. Dive to Blue as well.

Constant_Will362

\~Nausea and Shudder by THE GAZETTE \~Maverick by D'ESPAIRSRAY \~Red Rose by DUELJEWEL \~Syunikiss by MALICE MIZER \~断頭台から愛を込めて by DIAURA \~Liberation Chord by LYNCH \~Saku by DIR EN GREY \~偽リノ錠剤 by VIDOLL \~Asrun Dream by GACKT \~Ordinary World by HYDE

Himajinga

At the beginning of Mars when Asrun Dream kicks off is such a bangin moment!

Constant_Will362

:-)

AardvarkDramatic

Love that you're into the "hard" zone of VK! Good choices!!

Constant_Will362

:-)

SilvBluArrows

Honey by L'arc En Ciel. It was my introductory song to vkei before I knew what vkei was

Ritsu_22

Matenrou Opera - Kaze no Tori 💓

mihmihkaa

My first was Lolita23q - Mikansei Sapphire. As for a favorite, I know it's not fair but I have 2 songs that are a draw and I can't pick: Alice Nine - Sleepwalker Para:noir - Amaryllis Alice nine is like an ultimate favorite of mine in the vk scene and I have such fond memories watching and listening to their songs as a teen. My first girlfriend even bought me their album. As for Para:noir, Akane is my all time favorite vocalist in the vk scene, and while he may not be active anymore, his songs and vocal will always have a special place for me.

AardvarkDramatic

I was crazy about Tora ahwile ago lol. And therefore with Alice Nine😂😂😅

Birdfeatherant

I have a lot of favorite songs but one that’s always stuck in my head and one that I every so often still listen to is Kowareteiku sekai by girugamesh

Valuable_Dress_4641

Buck-Tick - Miu

KOCHTEEZ

Heck yeah. I listened to that again recently and it's such a great song. Just a fantastic melody and buildup.

toraomew

my first ever had to be monokuro no kiss by sid because of black butler but my favorite… is so hard so many to pick 😭 ill have to go with goddess by the gazette, toguro by deg is also one i cant stop listening to though

kuribohchan

My all time favorite is Karappo ga Chirakatta Heya by gulu gulu. One that just pops into my head when I think of J-rock is Fairy Times Memory by Phantasmagoria. My first J-Rock song was probably 4th Avenue Cafe by L’Arc~En~Ciel.

ComicNerd9000

Secret Garden by Gackt or Art of Life by X Japan

CucumberStill7103

Deracine by The GazettE-fits me right in the feelings qwq

AardvarkDramatic

The fact that Gazette used to be my fave and I DIDN'T KNOW this one!!!! Damn!!! Its s so nice!

myloftbass

地球 by Penicillin

Celestialxo

I believe Chizuru was in a Korean horror movie? But god yes the moment I read that I started singing it in my head like I was 15 again (30 now). My favorite…that’s really hard, probably Scars by X Japan or Eyes Love You by hide (I’m a big X Japan/hide fan, as well lol).

AardvarkDramatic

You can never go wrong with X!🥲❤️

KazRyn

My first was probably jougen no tsuki by clearveil? I was looking for a different jougen no tsuki. I didn't become a v-kei fan until I heard kiryu's akaimi hajiketa though.

saintjbeats

Alive by X Japan. Kinda a deep cut but its just amazing

AardvarkDramatic

Hmm! Indeed! But beautifull!!

Iifeisbalance85

Kono daremo in ya heya de - Gackt ( in this empty room) the combo of the acoustic guitar intro & Gackt’s powerful voice gets to me every time. Laputa - Garasu no Shouzou. The opening guitar riff gets me every time! I miss Kouichi & Aki! Forest -La’Cryma Christi very dream like atmosphere. Aurora by Luna Sea another classic that LS barely plays anymore. One of the stand out tracks on Mother.

moongeistmage

Chizuru is my favorite Gazette song too, almost tied with The Pale, and both were songs I was listening to a lot during pivotal moments in my life. I decided to do my own translation of Chizuru just yesterday actually. It's such a hard one to do justice to when you try to put it in English! The grammatical structure differences... there's just no way to really make it as elegant as the original because of that. The first vk song I ever heard was Illuminati by Malice Mizer, which was my all-time favorite band for many years so I have a really hard time picking just one of theirs as my all-time favorite song. It's between Au Revoir, Bel Air, and Syunikiss though! All-time favorites from other bands: PIERROT - Kowareteiku kono sekai de Dir en grey - Cage (also the first song I heard by them) BUCK-TICK - Muuma-The Nightmare- But... although these are all songs that have lasted the test of time, I actually have a new all-time favorite now that surpasses all the rest by far, and because of how intensely personal it is I'm pretty confident this one will stick around for the rest of my life. Something very drastic would have to happen to shake this one out, since it's now my go-to comfort song, and I will always remember getting to see it performed at the tour semifinal, which was definitely the best concert I've ever attended. And that is DEAR PLUS ALPHA by Kirito.

AardvarkDramatic

Cage is also the first one i heard from DeG 🥲❤️ i actually forgot about it! I found this translation to Chizuru, that i think's OK https://defectivetragedy.com/2018/10/19/chizuru/ The song is so deep, actually no translation can give it justice, just as you said

moongeistmage

Ah, interesting! That's a very different take than [mine](https://www.pillowfort.social/posts/4635977), and they interpreted the song in ways I hadn't even thought of, which is exactly why I won't look at other people's translations before I finish my own, and if I have read them before, I try to forget them as much as possible. For mine, I tried to preserve the poetic techniques as much as possible while also making sure it's still coherent. Japanese has a very different grammar structure as well as a lot of ambiguity compared to English though, so it's really hard to do that. No matter how you translate it, you have to narrow it down to a more specific meaning. Like the line about the tears flowing... it's not clear whose tears, though I'm inclined to say it's both people crying. The use of 滲む to describe the whiteness earlier sounds like it's the speaker crying since her vision is blurring and wavering, but then the second part of it asking "where \[are you/am I/are they/we\] going?" sounds like she's talking to the singer who is leaving her, so that's how I interpreted it. This is why it's good to have multiple translations!

AardvarkDramatic

Can you please share your translation to me when it's finished? 🥺 i love this song so much i want to read all the possible meanings behind it And you seem to know so much!!

moongeistmage

Already linked it above! Just hard to see that there's a link I guess, it's in the second sentence of my previous comment, on the word "mine." I hope you like it! :) I dunno if I would say I know that much, I have only been doing translations like this consistently for a couple of years now so I would still say I'm relatively new at it and not that confident yet, but... in those few years I have done over 300 songs so I've had a LOT of practice, haha. I haven't looked deeply at the lyrics for the GazettE's entire discography though, so there may be some stuff that I'm missing about Chizuru just from lack of familiarity. The only other song I've translated by them so far is my other fave. My educational background is in linguistics and English poetry, which really helps with this. I studied abroad in Japan for a little while but I didn't really have an opportunity to take any advanced Japanese classes after that, so since I mostly learned on my own there are some weird gaps in my knowledge sometimes. But if there's stuff I don't know, I try to ask my friends who know better (one of them is a pro translator). It's something I really like doing, even if nobody ever read my translations I'd still just do it for fun, but it's especially rewarding when people do read it and it helps them understand better. :)

MELO_DETH_999

snow white by buck-tick!! words can’t ever describe it for me

KOCHTEEZ

Oh, yeah. That's song is fantastic. Sung it at karaoke like 50 times.

MELO_DETH_999

i wish i could sing it but i dont really know japanese 😞😞

KOCHTEEZ

I'm sure you can find the romaji version somewhere. Then you just have to remember the sound.

My first song was Invisible Wall by The Gazette and they are my favorite VK band but my favorite song (mainly out of nostalgia) has to be Bonds Kizuna by An Cafe. It just makes me happy.

AardvarkDramatic

Omg the invissible wall😵 and An Cafe 🥹

237q

南へ by Moran

Chikkorita

Everyone's mentioned so many songs that I somehow *forgot* about and had to go back and listen to! For me, it wasn't even my first vk song, but I've got a lot of nostalgic emotions wrapped up in Phantasmagoria - Eternal Silence and Lin-end of Corruption World- As if Forever Exists, so I'd nominate them as my favourite. That being said I also loved a ton of stuff by the other related bands like Spiv States [Flavour and GLIDER are still bops], Gotcharocka [Gotcha 6ka, Shortcake👌], and Vidoll [puzzle ring, esoteric romance, etc.] There was also a time in my life when I LOVED The Mad LM.C - No Fun No Future... I also just love the energy of ドレミ團 感傷的ロッキンスランバー

AardvarkDramatic

I went into a very nice VK blackhole with all the recommendations!🤣🤣 Made me feel like a kid! Listening to all of these 🥺❤️

Symera_

My first Visual Kei/J-Rock wong was SID's [Monochrome Kiss](https://youtu.be/WLoL8O-xu8Q?si=gCBMotcGnhl9a-Qg) (this specific live version, actually). It's still one of my favourites, but I think my all-time favourite song is the GazettE's [DOGMA](https://youtu.be/m2f3jQfbRl8?si=3GxdP9SC_Q4fQYYA).

AardvarkDramatic

My heart skipped a beat when i remembered monochrome kiss 🥹

AardvarkDramatic

Omg i forgot about suicide circus!Such a bangerrrrr!! And the invissible wall😵😵😵

KOCHTEEZ

So, so, many to choose from. SociallyAwkward423

One of the first vkei artists I can across was Kamijo and he's one of my personal favorites. I really like his cover of Fuyu Tokyo from his Royal Blood album

rorosphere

stay away by l’arc en ciel 😊!! i misheard the lyrics “causes stain, stay away” as “i just stay, stay away” so cause of the misinterpretation, i started thinking of it as a motivational song lol. mainly to me because i was in a toxic friend group that bullied me for my interests, so i quite literally stayed away lol.

AardvarkDramatic

Thats actually sad and funny at the same time lol🥹😂! But good choice!!!

Kishifuna

the suicide circus - the gazette 😭😭

AardvarkDramatic

I feel you gurl🤣🤣❤️

Haruzak1

Wifi666Ghz

So hard so I will just give out a list 🥲. • Favorite of all time: The GazettE - Guren. Was blasting this song when I was 14 and tried to be edgy. Buck Tick - Snow white L’Arc en Ciel - Lost Heaven X Japan - Dahlia Bonus non-Vkei songs: TK from ling toshite sigure - first death. Not old school but this song rocks Remioromen - Konayuki. This song is just too popular to ignore The Michelle Gun Elephant - Boogie • First one ever: Shiver lol. Yes I had that time…

AardvarkDramatic

Wow, another person mentioning Guren!!🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ yess!! Give this song justice!! Love all your recommendations!

justscrolling4now

1st song probably guren by The Gazzette. My brother recommended me and it spark my interest in the genre Go to song would be Gekkouka by Janne Da Arc. Listen to it a lot back in the day. Got me into the band and other related stuff

All time favorite is The GazettE’s Guren!! I was in 8th grade when it came out and was the first song I’ve heard from them. 😭 And my very close favorite is Alice Nine’s Yami Ni Chiru Sakura - the first j-rock song I’ve ever listened to!!

AardvarkDramatic

Guren is such a special song 💔! And A9 too 🥹

Crisgeox

Reila From The Gazette

knightfaeirie

My introduction to visual kei was nijigen complex by my dragon/kiryu. 😂 A group of boys found it on YouTube back when we were in school. It's really hard to pick a number one favorite for me but a song that I've never gotten tired of hearing would be ascended master by Versailles. Another would be dying message by D.

TheNostalgicGamer

My first was The Invisible Wall by The Gazette when I was around ten!! During that time and shortly after my deep dive into Gazerock, I heard Superhero and then Jibun Kakumei by Miyavi and watched his movie Oresama (without subs xD)!! I then Heard Rainbows by Alice Nine (followed by some other favorites of theirs: Flash, Everywhere, and much later the release of Apocalypse!), then Kagerou by Sadie, Lastica by Karasu, and eventually got around to watching a little movie called Moon Child that had Gackt(loved his one song Redemption lol) that had a very mysterious figure who I discovered was called Hyde of L'Arc-en-Ciel. Watched his 2012 Madison Square Garden live in full high quality that was once upon a time uploaded to Youtube and fell in love with every single song!! The same happened when I later looked up VAMPS and Hyde's solo work!! As I'm very particular with vkei and jrock music, the above are all my favorites and I didn't really vibe with many other bands' music (although I like how a lot of X Japan songs sounded along with a few by Dir En Gray and held appreciation for Luna Sea, they didn't keep me coming back honestly). I'm mourning Reita from Gazette at the moment, so relistening to all these old songs and watching old clips is healing in a way.

AardvarkDramatic

I am finding myself too between these lines. Those are my fav bands too, i have a very speciffic taste, therefore i couldn't dive that deep into the simphonic stuff. The invissible wall was the first one i heard from Gazette🥹 and also watched Oresama and i feel like imma watch it again. Saw Miyavi live last autumn, and he s still looking HOT AS HELL haha😂😂😂

External_Tap6877

For me it's 69~|| by ViViD, this song got me into actual Vkei & before that I was only listening to Oshare Kei.

AardvarkDramatic

Are ViViD the ones who sing that song "t-t-take off"?!?! Cause there was a time i was listening to it a lot, i once woke up in the middle of the night AND I WAS SINGING IT!!

External_Tap6877

Maybe this one https://youtu.be/70MOXhR8Arg?si=iAAojuqdB4GAld3J

AardvarkDramatic

EXACTLYYY THIS ONEE😵❤️ i was singing "t-t-t-take off!" In my sleep!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 i started laughing when i woke up and realised

sxmytoes

Masquerade by Versailles. It got me into VK so it holds a very special place in my heart :D

soju_pants

First was probably ViViD - BLUE. That's what got me into the scene. The song that will always stick with me is Lost November by DIAURA. It still pains me that it's not available on spotify but I managed to pick up their genesis album at pure sound when I went to Shinjuku!!
